I will stick with my 2015 MacBook Pro for awhile. They were right about the disc drive, but this not so much. I love my SD card slot, my hdmi port, and usb ports. Also the magnetic charger.
I can guarantee you that in the next iteration of the macbook pro they will bring back magsafe and SD card readers and every applefan will go nuts like they reinvented the wheel...
If they really want USBC to take off faster. Then they should have made iPhone 7 with that port. The iphones yearly sales is still a force to be reckoned with. Also bring back the damn headphone jack... the phone is thin enough.
The MacBook is pretty shitty too. I mean, it's not a terrible laptop but it is about 2x the cost of what it should be considering the hardware and the fact that you need to spend up to 200 dollars on dongles to use it for real 'professional' work. Personally at this point I think you're paying an absurd premium for Mac OS - the days of MacBooks being the only well built laptops with the highest battery life are over, windows laptops and even chromebooks are and affordable and great alternative.
Lol the headphone jack will NEVER come back to the iPhone. Apple stand to make too much money from this. They own Beats which is the most popular wireless headphone company in the world (also one of the most overpriced), on top of that they can now charge hundreds of headphone manufacturers for an MFi (Made For iPhone) certification. Like always, Apple's ridiculous decisions are based on one thing and no it's not "courage", it's greed, pure and simple greed.
jalene150 I think their proprietary connector makes I difficult for malicious software and ports to crash, burn (USB killer) or damage the iPhone. The Mac, because of its larger size, can have those capabilities with the USB C port
chapsticky00 Because Apple,Back then their consumer products and pro products are actually aimed for consumer and pro.Nowadays apple products are just really useless.
Honest question, with the addition of USB-C (USB 3.1) could the data transfer speeds be faster by directly connecting the camera to the computer instead of an SD Card? Could a reason why an SD card was omitted was that USB-C speeds rendered the slot inferior?
inmynothingyoumeanteverythingtome that was the dumbest thing I've ever read. a camera is MOBILE. HOW THE HELL ARE YOU GOING TO MOVE WITH YOUR CAMERA ATTACHED TO A COMPUTER.
inmynothingyoumeanteverythingtome also if your SD card is only a certain mbps write speed it won't matter how fast usb type c is. it will be bottle necked by the ad card itself.
The iphone se is a bit faster than the iphone 5s. That is legit the only difference. And the iphone 7 is a bit faster and has a bit better camera than the iphone 6s. Yeah, a lot better specs my ass.
+3165dwayne Well the iPhone released 2007 and before that the "smartphones" were quite different than the ones we use today. Especially when it comes to charging ports.
Nothing charges the new iPhone out of the box, and nothing but a MacBook charges any other iPhone out of the box. It's always been a shame, just a bigger shame this time.
Adapters shouldn't be necessary, it doesn't take much to put an SD card reader into a PROFESSIONAL laptop. I don't care if it's "technological progression", it's ridiculous to expect someone to buy so much more for something that's expected elsewhere.
Andrew Nikolic The problem is isn't the SD card slot itself, it's that for professionals, you need to be able to take the memory from your camera and dump it on your computer asap while on the road during a shoot. Having to worry about just one (possibly multiple) extra little cable on that shoot shouldn't have to be an issue.
Andrew Nikolic Something like USB A we will move past from, and that is currently evolving into USB C. The SD Cards however are not evolving at all. They have been here for years, and will stay here for years. There is no benefit in the shirt or long term to remove SD Card slots when they are here to stay for professionals.
Micheung120 of course that is true, but apple wants to push the market, and there are already USB c exclusive laptops, so they want to be the first to use it in a pro machine. If I were Apple, would have put the 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports(or maybe one?) and a USB A, Thunderbolt 2/ SD card slot(whichever is used more, keeping in mind the thunderbolt 2 is previous gen).
Yeah that's bs, if the iPhone had USBC, and shipped with a USB c to usb c cable, along with a USB c female to usba Male for legacy computers, the industry will move faster to USB C
Now try replacing the words iPhones and iPads with Macbooks and Macbook Pro 2016. You literally admitted that Apple chose a bad port as the only port on the new Macbooks. You know that isn't the case. Also, market maturity was also applicable for all the existing ports on older Macbooks. Apple had the best opportunity to ditch the lightning connector and switch to the better USB-C standard. They messed up pretty big there for the love of money.
you have been really drinking the Apple Kool aid. It is pretty common knowledge how bad lightning cables are in durability. The mechanical durability of USB-C far outlasts the durability of lightning cables, if not the mechanical. Also there is no billion lightning devices lol and USB-C is way more future proof and will be adopted by pretty much everyone like USB-A.
And if Apple is somehow unable to make quality USB-C cables while other manufacturers are having no problems in doing so, then how do you explain the fact that Apple does make good quality cables for Macbook with literally the same connector which you are calling as "weak"? Sure your iPhones are heavier than Macbooks?
Courage? More like audacious. They dared themselves to give consumers these inconveniences. There is NO innovation or progress here. The transition should've been more seamless. Apple knows people are foolish enough to purchase the latest apple products every single year. They could remove the screen and they'd still buy it.
I agree with what youre saying but youre missing the point. The new chip on their headphones sync across all your apple devices so its seamless. The lightning headphones are for people who dont have wireless headphones & dont want to use an adaptor. I understand what youre saying and I am not denying the inconvenience, the world just isnt ready for such a quick transition
Not at all, it was the right decision. Apple ditched legacy ports in favour of modern Thunderbolt 3 ports. Steve Jobs would be smiling at Apple from the heavens for making this move. The iMac G3 from 1998 ditched the floppy drive and all legacy ports in favour of USB.
ahaha no. Also, who says it has to be only all usb c or not? There PLENTY of laptop and pcs out there that just have both. So, no. Furthermore, I will assume youre the guy who in 2 years will claim Apple invented USB-C and was the first to use in a laptop. I will be there waiting. On my HoloLens.
Saad S i like to think that we're not far off from a USB c iPhone, but Apple isn't inspiring any more confidence in me with their love of proprietary ports
should have done this with the 2015 MacBook pros instead of the 2011.. they're only ever so slightly slower than the 2016's but with all the USB ports etc
Ive been using the mbp with touch bar for a year now,and it's one of those things you use in like your first 2-3 months of usage(sort of like the multitask feature and touch ID) and I never use it now. almost as if it's not there anymore I got the Microsoft surface pro this year and it's awesome!I'm actually planning to sell my macbook now+ the 2 dongles that I bought with it
Mr. N but you gotta buy an extra cable to charge the phone. I think that's what he's saying. I'm not hating on apple, I just got the 2016 13 in w/out touchbar and all I needed to buy was USB c to USB 3.0 for like $5 on amazon. However I am not a "pro" user so it did not really bother me, but I could understand for people that might be video editors or photographers cause they would need an sd card and stuff
lol keep laughing USB-C to older usb adapters are like $2 on ebay plus shipping and work perfectly. Apple will try charge you $19 for them hahah. USB-C is superior period
You have summed up my recent frustration with Apple in this video. The whole idea of laptops and mobile phones is portability and Apple is failing at it big time. Apple chooses design over experience which is a shame because iPhones and MacBooks are not fashion accessories...
Steve Jobs would have done the same thing, he was always looking forwards not backwards. Make no mistake, USB-C is forwards. I think he would have actually pushed to remove the old USB ports even earlier than 2016.
I'm now laughing with my 2015 Macbook Pro.....all the ports....magsafe power....considering ditching my iPhone 5 for an Android phone cause it crashes way too often (something that has been going on since ios 7).
i love my 2015 MBP too haha If ppl, for example, have enough money to buy that new macbook with the fancy touchbar, i think they are so much better off with what we have lol
I find this interesting, because the dongle thing is a way bigger problem for video reviewers than for the average user. If your job involves lots of video editing then you probably have lots of SD cards, external batteries and a need to connect your phone to a computer via a cable for fast transfer of large video and photo files. So I get why this annoys them a lot. But as an average user, I don't really care to be honest. I mean the only thing I use ports for on a semi-regular basis are USB sticks and even that's pretty rare, usually Dropbox is more convenient. For the average user I reckon this full switch is pretty good because it forces the market to change faster and USB C is a really fast universal non-proprietary solution. But for video reviewers it's a bit of a nightmare. And because it affects these guys more negatively than most, I think we're getting a bit of an over reaction in the media. (Though Apple should have made iPhones use USB C too because then it would be more universal and your laptop charger could also charge your phone too which would be one less cable ;) )

The only thing I don't get is why don't you just replace your cables instead of buying dongles for your old cables? Like buy a USB-C to Lightning cable instead of a USB-A to USB-C Dongle.
nobody is arguing that usb-c is better than usb-a in theory.... but that doesn't mean they can't include more standard ports until more devices use type c, and even then, we shouldn't have to use adapters for displays, SD cards, or being able to charge the device of all things....
Because 1) money, and after you've spent it this way, 2) now all your fancy new cables won't work with anyone else's stuff, unless you buy... *drumroll*... reverse dongles.
8 лет назад+3
Joshua Fan Honestly, I'd rather have it that way than have a bag full of dongles. Besides, we are heading towards a USB-C future so they will become more useful with time. Might be a worthy investment.
I already have to use 2 adapters on my 2013 MacBook Pro at work. Hell no am i gonna upgrade to the 2016 model. Apple, you have sucessfully pushed me to a Surface Pro.
The floppy disc, ethernet port, DVD drive, etc were all well beyond having been replaced by the time they were removed. They didn't get rid of them before the alternatives were even available in most cases. Tons of stuff cannot even be purchased in USB-C/TB3 yet, even if you wanted to replace everything.
senecadream Exactly. They removed IO that was about to go obsolete anyway. Meanwhile there is not indication that photographers are going to stop using SD cards anytime soon and the 3.5mm jack has been standard for decades for a reason. USB-C on the other hand will not be standard for at least two or three years.
I have the 2015 MacBook and only use the basic USB-C --> USB adapter because I use a laptop for portability, web browsing, word processing, watching videos, occasional gaming, and light editing. I don't need a dozen ports just like I don't need a dozen dongles. For a certain type of professional, one who uses a lot of peripheral devices, or needs an SD slot, the new Pro is sure to be an inconvenience. As for the lack of a headphone jack, I welcome a wireless future. The fewer cables I have, the better.
Stephen M. Tomic Sure, you welcome a wireless future, but as of now, not having the headphone jack is incredibly annoying. Even top end professionals use it. Have you noticed that the new MacBooks come with a headphone jack but not with a lighting port for listening? That means you can't use the lighting earbuds that come with the iPhone 7 on any other device
Admittedly, Sung-Hyun, I use a Moto G phone and still begrudgingly use the headphone jack, but I intend on buying wireless Jaybird X3 earbuds in my near feature, or some other equivalent. Apple would have been wiser to make the iPhone 7 USB-C as well, but I suppose they want to milk their proprietary port for as long as possible.
that's what I thought, but taking it a step further, most people really just need to switch their regular USB cables to USB-C cables (e.g. USB-C to lightning) rather than buying dongles, and they are on sale in the apple store as of right now. This video is stupid....
Jz Yg 1 port is not enough. Imagine you have an audio setup and you also need to plug in your laptop obviously. I need an external SSD cause 256GB is zero, a Midi-Keyboard via USB, a pro audio interface via usb, the NI Machine via USB, ideally even a mouse to be faster than with trackpad. Now im counting 1 (charge), + 5 ports, 4 of them need to be well powered because of the items so forget to hook all up with one dongle. Pro use is not possible with the entry model. Period.
I only carry one dongle with me, I haven't used it in a week. So I had a hard time remembering where I placed it for my new MacBook Pro. Right now I'm happy that I'm sticking with my iPhone 6s Plus, I use the aux cord everyday (since my Bluetooth audio is messed up atm). The MacBook Pro is really great from my 2012 non retina MacBook Pro. Solid upgrade. I'm ok with the dongles for now, but it does suck to pay for those adapters. Since the new MacBook pros are already expensive as it is...
So your solution for the removal of a universal port that has been around for ages and actually has no major issues is to pay another 200$ for a specific set of headphones from the same company that got rid of the port in the first place? Hmmmmm I wonder why they did it
" nobody ever upgrades!" no. nobody designed cameras and phones that only read SDXC, or computers that only has USB 3.0, hell, even micro-USB took it's time. And HDMI may never be the only port behind your TV. People don't upgrade only because the current standard is already good enough, the same reason NFC never took on(beside payment), plenty of USB 2.0 appliances still available. and 3.5mm headphone since time immemorial.
I left something similar to another comment, but I agree just because a new standard comes out doesn't mean things will change. Some people actually like an older standard for one reason or another. Quotes from other post below with more examples "A lot of USB devices on the cheap still use USB 1.0 standards. We're on USB 3.0/3.1 which type c is based on USB 2.0 is common and the mainstream port, but it's still backwards compatible with 1.0 The vga display adapter is old and has been replaced with many different display options, but many monitors, projectors, and other devices will have vga ports. PS/2 is an old i/o connector that still comes in high end motherboards and gaming peripherals
spot on! If everyone boycott the new phone and macbooks surely apple will follow suit and reintroduce the headphone jack and the microsd slot, magsafe, and at the same time keep those display, keyboard, force touches, all those stuff pro users must-haves
Adapters should be to use future accessories with old devices like the laptop or phone, not the other way around. It's just stupid for a pro laptop to prioritize thinness over the io
People adapted from CD's rather quick. Hell, you can look back at pages from 2012 and see people saying the exact same thing you are saying now. "How can I watch my movies" "How do I install programs" "Now I won't be able to burn songs anymore". Now CD's are extinct, and only the people who can't get with the times or don't have enough money are stuck using them.
Watching this made me appreciate my windows 10 Asus so much more. i7 with 8G ram, 256 SSD, Usb C, usb 3 with fast charge, usb, hdmi, card reader and a battery that can last all day. For less than half the price of a macbook pro.
All computers are nothing but boxes of bits, have always been. Do you think The cpu, ram, gpu is different for macs now as it was 7 or 8 years ago? Even the motherboard or should I say logic boards are the same just shaped differently to suit a different form factor. What stands out its the OS witch ironically is just a closed form of Linux. You can even run most straight up linux commands in the terminal. And guess what! almost all Linux are free. As for virus for macs in 2016? Better think again, with the growth of mac users over the last years there are now. Not as much as Windows but there are virus for macs and mac users tend to be more careless because they think there are no virus for macs. I used to think like you but then I started to understand what computers really are and how they work. Macs are very nice computers but to me they are not worth what people pay for them. Sorry just not.
Some of this is a bit stupid because there is a USB-C to Lightning cable for your iPhone so no adapter needed, and do you really need to put head phones in to answer a call? No you could have just answered it. This is really just a speed bump as in a short period of time everything will be USB-C. If Apple didn't go all USB-C the trasisson would take longer because no one would be just pulling the band-aid off and going all USB-C. I would bet that in 2 years the majority of laptops will be USB-C only and desktops will not be far behind.
This year's macbook pro isn't for pros anymore. People who buy a macbook pro are video editors, photographers and graphic designers, basically people who create content. Removing the traditional ports is just a dumb move from Apple. Most professionals don't own a device that uses USB C yet. So you need to buy dongles for all of your accessories. As Roberto Blake said, Apple is currently just in it for the money. They don't think about the real professionals that use their products anymore. I can see that Apple wants us to live in the wireless future, but I think we're currently not entirely there yet.
Typing this on one. I don't even notice the bezels, and they help me when I'm using the FULL touch screen. Not an apple hater, but I picked up the stealth as a compliment to my 2013 15 Retina, and man is this thing amazing.
Transitions are painful but with the right cables and accessories, that's how you move forward. This video was lacking all the easy answers to all exibits making it too partisan for the people advert to change
For this transition period of the ports, the least that apple can do is atleast bundle some "Adapters" with the laptop itself. But no, gotta make money. This is like harassing people, passively. You can't plug your latest iphone 7 into the new MacBook without buying a freaking "adapter". First lightning cable is the future, now its the USB C, get it together! Just use the USB C on the iPhone as well to make everything a bit easier, nope, gotta stand out of the crowd. Sigh..
This is the free market. We don't need to update to the latest technology and make compromises. Companies make technologies to suit as and adapt to our standards.
As an it professional I believe that technology should provide solutions to problems I have not creat new ones. I'm keeping my mid 2012 mbp I upgraded the memory to 16gig added an SSD and bought a did-drive cady to give me the option to add a second SSD. Almost unbelievable that I'm talking about a Mac isn't it;-) also i have hard wired network without the need for dongles. Dongle company formerly known as Apple
Swarky no it's not even made by Apple it's made by companies like Belkin I think Sony has one or you can just go to Amazon or even fourth party websites like wish and get it for like $10 ...it's one adapter hub that plugs into the computer and has two USB ports an HDMI port USB c port an sd and a microSD slot a lighting slot and something else ...and it's not a bunch of long cords that dangle off the side of the computer it's one piece that plugs in and lays flush with the side
3,700 Apple employees on the MacPro team don't like this video. Just like everything that happened in 2016-2020, we are now finally returning to the good old days. If they'd only add USB-C for older items I'd be smitten. I've thoroughly enjoyed watching from afar as all my colleagues dingle their dongles all over the place for the last 4 years :)
If you work on a laptop you have a hub or dock at your desk. It is honestly much more convenient to unplug one cable than having to unplug your 2 usb ports, hdmi/display port for external monitor, and charger every time you want to leave your desk with your computer.
IN 2020, the macbook pro will not only have NO ports AT ALL (it will charge by capturing the kinetic movement of each keys pressed). Then in 2025, the keyboard will also have disappeared (SIRI will be so clever that you won't need any keyboards, and if you have a french accent trying to speak english, too bad for you)
This is leaps and bounds beyond the Wired vs wireless video you made. I don't know what you changed but this was entertaining and informative without the cringe-factor of THAT video. Awesome.
Bluetooth headphones, USB-C accessories? Only thing I disagree with is no SD card slot and the iPhone not being USB-C. But they couldn't get rid of lightning and the headphone jack in one year. I hate when people say it doesn't have USB. It has usb, just the type-c port. Apple is just pushing for bluetooth headphones and usb-c to become the standard
you know the solution for having USB C ports AND not needing dongles? having both USB C and B. Thats how all computers should be until the transition to USB C is finished
Is not thaaaaat bad. 2016 MacBook sucks, but you dont need ALL that dongles, maybe two, or three. If you have with you your lightning earpods, you just need an "2 USB-3, SD slot and micro SD slot" dongle and thats all. I think that I will buy something like this in two or three years, when every product on the market will use USB-C for everything
+Ayush Abhinav the future is wireless... WHAT ABOUT NOW!?!?!?!?!?! Right now it isn't the future. People buy the laptop to use it NOW not in the future! This is completely anti-consumer on Apple's part and isn't actually improving anyone's life. If they actually put old io + new usb C that would be great but no, Apple decided once again to go thinness over LOGIC. The worst thing about this rant is I actually like Apple :(
SkeleCrafter now in a few month to a year everything willl be usb c abd other companies will start making usb c and all the windows nerds will praise the pc companies for pushing tech forward but me on the other hand i was at best buy and played around with the floor model of the new proband fell inlove the keyboard was perfect the display was perfect the touch bar was very smooth handling and extremely high quality the only thing was the trackpad but iv never used apple track pads before so i guess that's something you gotta get used all in all im excited to have that as a first macbook
Max Turner you need one dongle to do everything and more then the old 2015 macbook pro, and you will have 3 other thunderbolt 3 ports. You can connect egpus, and 8k monitors with thunderbolt3
I've got the 12-inch MacBook and a multi-adaptor with 2 USB's, an SD card reader and a USB C for charging. Here's the thing, I NEVER use it. As a student, I save all my work to the iCloud drive which I can access from any computer. As for photos from a camera, just do a Wi-fi transfer to your phone, then they all go up to the iCloud Photo Library instantly. No thinking required. And as for the iPhone 7, bluetooth technology has caught up. A great set of Bluetooth headphones is an awesome investment. And if you don't have the cash, TONS of $20-$30 options are available on Amazon. :D
I have a 2011 MacBook Pro with Ethernet port, FireWire, etc I still have to use a dongle to HDMI to plug it in to my screen and another dongle to VGA to connect it with my school projector.
I’m still rocking the late 2011 MacBook Pro with a 2.4 ghz core i5 and 8gb ram with El Capitan and I’ve never had a problem with it! It’s a beautiful and great little machine!
Apple is trying to attack a market of having one cable that can do many things. The problem with the beginning of the industry or technology all these different cables were created because that was the way that company was making money. Now that our technology has evolved we can make one cable like (type c) to do what hdmi USB and all these other cables can do. A step into the forward! Something all companies will do in the near future!
jmiquelmb its Apple they want to push forward these ports like remember the floppy disk drive they took that out and now no one uses that and the dvd drive they took that out they took that away and no one uses that so give it a few years plus its not like you have to buy it
Sitting watching this on my 2011 Macbook Pro, still going strong. Great video. I really wanted to upgrade but really need my ports, and SD card slot. Unfortunately, I may have to get a 2015 laptop, even though its gone up in price since last year and is just expensive as the new one when you add all the extras. Crazy.
you dont even have to go back to 2011. just look back at 2015 when it was all better.
I think they wanted it just for the CD at the end.
2015 retina is my favorite
wlgur8086k last generation mac uses 2011 components... Yes, the one which was being sold a couple of months ago as a new high end laptop
or even 2014
i know, but it was probably for the cd function! question, i want to buy a macbook, is the macbook (retina from 2015) a good one?
They mocked Apple's products by comparing them to Apple's products
*They mocked Apple's new products by comparing them to Apple's old products
Tom Rigden Apple old product still apple products
This video is here to demonstrate how a company as much of a good manufacturer and designer as apple can rip off people as good as it's doing :)
Mind. Blown. *psshhheeewwww*
They mocked Tim Cook's work, through the works of Steve Jobs. Jks. Retina line up was good until new 2016 MBP. RIPGlowingAppleLogo
I will stick with my 2015 MacBook Pro for awhile. They were right about the disc drive, but this not so much. I love my SD card slot, my hdmi port, and usb ports. Also the magnetic charger.
the pro and air versions do, the regular macbook doesn't.
Sorry I fixed it. I meant my Pro.
haha who cares that much about a glowing logo?
I can guarantee you that in the next iteration of the macbook pro they will bring back magsafe and SD card readers and every applefan will go nuts like they reinvented the wheel...
A 2015 version is going to last you at least half a decade. People shouldn't be buying new computers every year.
If they really want USBC to take off faster. Then they should have made iPhone 7 with that port. The iphones yearly sales is still a force to be reckoned with. Also bring back the damn headphone jack... the phone is thin enough.
Agreed. Most of the problems in this video are due to the shitty iPhone 7, not the Macbook. When I burn my toast, I don't blame the bread.
Sand Umhh … no

Colby Kordas and lesser ports to suck money from u by making u buy dongles
Preach this.
Yet the iPhone still outperforms every phone i've seen... wonder why that is?
You can't charge new iPhone with new MacBook out of the box, *that's the biggest shame*
Aakash Kalaria Yeah that's like 2005 , before smart phones.
+3165dwayne Well the iPhone released 2007 and before that the "smartphones" were quite different than the ones we use today. Especially when it comes to charging ports.
3165dwayne Actually, the inconvenience you'll face with 2016 macbook pro will make you feel that you are in a 2005 world.
But you can charge a pixel with new Macbook out of the box!
Nothing charges the new iPhone out of the box, and nothing but a MacBook charges any other iPhone out of the box. It's always been a shame, just a bigger shame this time.
It blows my mind they removed the MagSafe.
They removed all the good stuff ;) hell they even removed Steve Jobs
Norman damnnnnnn loool
removed everything
but at least now you can charge you MacBook with a power bank
dont forget the innovation. they also removed the INNOVATION
Adapters shouldn't be necessary, it doesn't take much to put an SD card reader into a PROFESSIONAL laptop. I don't care if it's "technological progression", it's ridiculous to expect someone to buy so much more for something that's expected elsewhere.

Actually when floppy disks were being phased out of computers, USB sticks were the new norm. Ergo a viable alternative was already on the market.
worse example is the iPhone 7 lightning headphones don't plug into the new MacBook
worst *
Yeah that's bs, if the iPhone had USBC, and shipped with a USB c to usb c cable, along with a USB c female to usba Male for legacy computers, the industry will move faster to USB C
Steve Jobs is rolling in his iGrave.

Sounds about right, my friend. :)

Waiting for Apple to sell water and fools to go "omg Apple reinvented water"
TheKzwai They already did that, its called the Apple Book.
I'm getting Thneedville flashbacks.
***** I think they will only sell the bottle for $50. The water will be sold separately at the Apple store for another $50.
TheKzwai you better copyright that invention and then you get royalties.
The bottle of water will be sealed completely. To open, purchase the dongle named iStraw
Meanwhile the iPhone still doesn't have USB-C
Sure your iPhones are heavier than Macbooks?
areeb1296 they're out to make a profit. What did you expect?
still doesnt have the Dash charging/Fast Charging. LOL
You can't even listen to music on the Macbook with Apple's own lightning headphones released a month earlier. That's simply ridiculous.
PROGRESS!
Juan Sebastián Camargo Visbal hey man. Courage.
Juan Sebastián Camargo Visbal If you travel alot its more convenient😁
I choose dongle-free.. i prefer to keep my 2015 macbook pro.. dumb decision made by Apple this year
nik kamil lol same
Not at all, it was the right decision. Apple ditched legacy ports in favour of modern Thunderbolt 3 ports. Steve Jobs would be smiling at Apple from the heavens for making this move. The iMac G3 from 1998 ditched the floppy drive and all legacy ports in favour of USB.
Apple is pushing technology to the cliff not forward.
managereda Truth!
managereda ture
I bet when in 2 years everything becomes USB-C you're also the person to praise Apple.
So how does everything being USB-C in 2 years help you now?
They should've put USB c on the iPhone 7
Saad S i like to think that we're not far off from a USB c iPhone, but Apple isn't inspiring any more confidence in me with their love of proprietary ports
Saad S they really need lightning to make them "different" and make a lot of money.
If they did, I might buy in to their ecosystem. For now, though, my S7Edge and Surface Pro 4 are still killing the game.
Were there any computers with USB C ports before the first iphone with a lightening port came out?
Ryan yeah, but not a significant amount only the Chromebook pixel I think
Yeah, I don't care for thickness, I care for productivity... Miss you USB ports.... Miss you MagSafe
Just go and buy mid-2015 top modell and you are still the boss, your problems solved
Just get a Dell or a Toshiba or any other model that is much better made and much cheaper.
Personally, I believe many Apple users don't care so much about the hardware as they care about the OS and integration?
Isiah Friedlander The MacBook pro isn't pro anymore!
Shouldn't you be counseling Michael right now?
should have done this with the 2015 MacBook pros instead of the 2011.. they're only ever so slightly slower than the 2016's but with all the USB ports etc
Yeah, Early 2015 Retina 13''. Very close to 2016 ones.
Just checked out the touch bar in Apple Store. Feel it is quite useless at this stage.
benwu7 I have the new mbp touch, and i use it to video edit. i gotta say its pretty convenient. its also developing so i look forward to future uses!
Honestly I hated it. I hated the matte finish on the "glass" that they cover the touch bar with.
nicktune1219 it feels better though, after a while, the touch bar isnt that noticable
MyUTF4 that is actually not true. Watch marques brownlee video. You can just slide with one touch.
Ive been using the mbp with touch bar for a year now,and it's one of those things you use in like your first 2-3 months of usage(sort of like the multitask feature and touch ID) and I never use it now. almost as if it's not there anymore I got the Microsoft surface pro this year and it's awesome!I'm actually planning to sell my macbook now+ the 2 dongles that I bought with it
its sad that you cant plug your iphone directly into your mac but i can plug my nexus 6p into it with one cable, no dongles
Benjamin H. They have a cord to do that with iPhone. It’s like five us dollars
Apple are the new Sony. Remember how Sony were this elite brand in the 80s and 90s now look at them.
Exactly
They still got the ps4 tbh
Falcon yeah but nothing else. Back in the day they dominated almost every sector imaginable
sony cameras are nice. so are their headphones, wireless speakers, and action cameras. yes they aren't as dominant but certainly still relevant.
In this days sony is just PS4 and cameras
You don't need to go all the way back to 2011, just take a look at the 2015 MacBook pro that's still a capable laptop with all the ports you need.
This is what we call "Apples to Apples comparison". lololol
Coming from 2021 to tell you should do more of this kinds of videos... I loved Versus!
Still can't believe they got rid of MagSafe
Feels more like a buzzfeed video than the high quality verge lol.
this is like this NOW, but in a couple of years, everything will be usb-c anyway and you'll wish your laptop sad those.
Dino Prašo In two years? AHAHAH
Dino Prašo you said it your self homie, IN A COUPLE OF YEARS. No where near now. but hey its what you guys call "courage"
Dino Prašo but that's not now. That is the problem
lol keep laughing USB-C to older usb adapters are like $2 on ebay plus shipping and work perfectly. Apple will try charge you $19 for them hahah. USB-C is superior period
I assume you'll still be able to buy the latest apple devices on 2018 if you want. Still, what about sd cards?
You have summed up my recent frustration with Apple in this video. The whole idea of laptops and mobile phones is portability and Apple is failing at it big time. Apple chooses design over experience which is a shame because iPhones and MacBooks are not fashion accessories...
2012 MacBook Pro with SSD ✌🏼️
AppleiOSapps same, even faster if you take out the cd drive and put a second ssd
erick macias it's not faster if it has an extra ssd...
Raid?
With 16gig of ram!!! Ayy

Intel i5 2,5 GHz Dual Core
256 WD SSD
2TB 7200RPM HDD on a raid
10GB of 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM (16GB soon)
macOS 10.14 Mojave/Windows 10 Pro
no need to upgrade
apple fail
steve jobs is rolling in his grave right now
peruface so is your grandmother with that profile pic
Steve Jobs would have done the same thing, he was always looking forwards not backwards. Make no mistake, USB-C is forwards. I think he would have actually pushed to remove the old USB ports even earlier than 2016.
Nah he's spining in it
He’s spinning like a rotor
Doesn't a hub cover the need to carry all of these dongles?
Apple needs to watch this.
I'm now laughing with my 2015 Macbook Pro.....all the ports....magsafe power....considering ditching my iPhone 5 for an Android phone cause it crashes way too often (something that has been going on since ios 7).
i love my 2015 MBP too haha
If ppl, for example, have enough money to buy that new macbook with the fancy touchbar, i think they are so much better off with what we have lol
lol...Im still on my 2011 MBP. I updated the memory and it runs like a beast! Ppl are brainwashed.
BxPolymath I originally had the 2011 MBP but motherf-ers robbed my house lol
RIP little guy, I hope they didn't do u any harm
BrntVanilla That sucks dude. at least you didn't end up with the 2016 piece of crap
BxPolymath 😂😂 ik thank god haha
The perfect middle ground is the 2015 macbook pro and the iphone 6s at this time but now you need dongles for most apple products that id reccommend
I still have the 2015 I got my ports! And it work pretty well
I find this interesting, because the dongle thing is a way bigger problem for video reviewers than for the average user.
What, and you don't need the cable if its USB-A? Everything about USB-C is better...this video is ridiculous
Dennis Löfgren cables cost also 20-30$ each. Like a almost a dongle.
nobody is arguing that usb-c is better than usb-a in theory.... but that doesn't mean they can't include more standard ports until more devices use type c, and even then, we shouldn't have to use adapters for displays, SD cards, or being able to charge the device of all things....
Because 1) money, and after you've spent it this way, 2) now all your fancy new cables won't work with anyone else's stuff, unless you buy... *drumroll*... reverse dongles.
Joshua Fan Honestly, I'd rather have it that way than have a bag full of dongles. Besides, we are heading towards a USB-C future so they will become more useful with time. Might be a worthy investment.
time to move... the genius is dead so the brand..
Wozniak died????
More like the marketing genius.
Steve? No, he was not a genius at all lol...
He was God himself.
Man, Steve Jobs left a big hole that none can fill it.
i mean the marketing genius :>
KenaDeeeh eh and I went all drama-queen XD
I already have to use 2 adapters on my 2013 MacBook Pro at work. Hell no am i gonna upgrade to the 2016 model. Apple, you have sucessfully pushed me to a Surface Pro.
Everyone complained when Apple removed the floppy disk.
2015 was the end of the "good" macbooks.
Macbook air 2017?
Aye, that's the sensible thing to do. Really, the only time I'm inconvenienced is when I want to put a video file on a USB key to then use with my TV.
Apple is not satisfied yet... they just want to invent a paper thin laptop ... but we need legacy ports , we'll all ways need them ...
Hyperdrive and AirPods, solves all the problems in this video.........
So your solution for the removal of a universal port that has been around for ages and actually has no major issues is to pay another 200$ for a specific set of headphones from the same company that got rid of the port in the first place? Hmmmmm I wonder why they did it
Hiiiiiii I used to watch our video
Solid Brix Studios WIRELESS!!!
u know how much those cost?
Solid Brix Studios just but an ipad
" nobody ever upgrades!"
no. nobody designed cameras and phones that only read SDXC, or computers that only has USB 3.0, hell, even micro-USB took it's time.
Quotes from other post below with more examples
"A lot of USB devices on the cheap still use USB 1.0 standards. We're on USB 3.0/3.1 which type c is based on USB 2.0 is common and the mainstream port, but it's still backwards compatible with 1.0
The vga display adapter is old and has been replaced with many different display options, but many monitors, projectors, and other devices will have vga ports.
PS/2 is an old i/o connector that still comes in high end motherboards and gaming peripherals
The DongleBook Pro 2016 is still selling lololololol
spot on! If everyone boycott the new phone and macbooks surely apple will follow suit and reintroduce the headphone jack and the microsd slot, magsafe, and at the same time keep those display, keyboard, force touches, all those stuff pro users must-haves
Consumers have the power when we together
Dan Bellamy except no one will boycotts apple or any major brand
+Dan Bellamy
If apple says its product is Innovative, then it's innovative.-
Apple's logic
eventhough if it's not!
There are too many blind people for others to make a difference, unfortunately
Dan Bellamy I want the Glowing Apple logo back!
I have watched this video numerous times, highly entertaining and true at the same time. Great work.
Fun fact: a wireless charger costs less than the dongle ,so does the Usb-C to lightning
Adapters should be to use future accessories with old devices like the laptop or phone, not the other way around. It's just stupid for a pro laptop to prioritize thinness over the io
Upgrading from just a one year old MacBook Pro to the latest is really a downgrade. Not much "pro" about it.
lmao with the cd drive at the end. that basically sums up the entire video. usb-c is the future
it may be the future, but this is now.
People adapted from CD's rather quick. Hell, you can look back at pages from 2012 and see people saying the exact same thing you are saying now. "How can I watch my movies" "How do I install programs" "Now I won't be able to burn songs anymore". Now CD's are extinct, and only the people who can't get with the times or don't have enough money are stuck using them.
and the now already supports usbc
Woofer Cooker Doesnt matter, what matters is that apple shouldve made a more subtle transition into a USB C world
LinusMLGTips disagree I own the new computer and the only real issue is no sd all other things that you need have supported usbc devices
Watching this made me appreciate my windows 10 Asus so much more.
i7 with 8G ram, 256 SSD, Usb C, usb 3 with fast charge, usb, hdmi, card reader and a battery that can last all day. For less than half the price of a macbook pro.
but its an Asus windows laptop, so there is that....
whatever nevermind Its a proper pc not a 2000 dollar facebook machine.
Of course it is, definitely not a box of bits sourced at the cheapest price covered with a a virus magnet.
Sorry just not.
you are entitled to your opinion
Gotta say, space grey Macbook looks nice.
I can see that Apple wants us to live in the wireless future, but I think we're currently not entirely there yet.
just get a razer blade stealth
yes, but those Fat bezels...
Robin Obermaier aesthetics vs functionality and value for money
I'd trade those stupid dongles for fat bezels any day
Typing this on one. I don't even notice the bezels, and they help me when I'm using the FULL touch screen. Not an apple hater, but I picked up the stealth as a compliment to my 2013 15 Retina, and man is this thing amazing.
Taylor Thomas how is performance without the razer core??
Also can you swap the SSD with a NVMe drive?
The problem with no Steve jobs is that Jony ive is given free reign to put out impractical designs.
+ibex33 100% sure.!
no headphone jack
no upgradable ssd (MBP touchbar models)
no magsafe
Company is going down!
all by itself😂🙌
There's one single dongle that removes the nered for all of these
Swarky Comment of the year.
This had me crying and rolling on the ground! BEST SIMPLE COMMENT TO SUM THIS UP!!
Absolutely brilliant... thanks for making this. It's hilarious!
What are these people connecting to the computers? I though we already switched to USB C back in 2015 when one plus 2 and Pixel came out.
Alexandre Andrianov iphones...
The exaggeration is real. 90% of what was shown could have been solved by just replacing your cables, no dongles needed.
Looks like The Verge recently found out how to do two of the same person in a video...
It is honestly much more convenient to unplug one cable than having to unplug your 2 usb ports, hdmi/display port for external monitor, and charger every time you want to leave your desk with your computer.
once usb type c is mainstream then the MacBook will be a little better
And that's not even close.
Ahmed Mohamedeen true
At that time, there will be Macbook pro 2020.
It's all about timing.
Kenny Chhoeun by then we'll hear about USB 5
IN 2020, the macbook pro will not only have NO ports AT ALL (it will charge by capturing the kinetic movement of each keys pressed). Then in 2025, the keyboard will also have disappeared (SIRI will be so clever that you won't need any keyboards, and if you have a french accent trying to speak english, too bad for you)
The 2015 MacBook has all the ports and almost has the same power as mbp 2016
Now we have dongles, but in the future everything is going to be usb c 3.1
love that last one, when she pulled the DVD and slam it into that laptop XD jajajajajajaja
Lightning to USB-c cable, Bluetooth headset, and store all the photos on iCloud.
Problem solved.
Her problem is she didn't buy the right dongle. Theres dongles i know that you will only 1 or 2 to cover all the dongles she has.
Acting 6/10 IGN
had a 2011 mbp..decided to switch to the 2016 edition...adapter mess made me buy the razer blade
Alfredo nm Did you read what I wrote? I said that MacBook sucks, but this video is exaggerating the dongle situation
Alfredo nm Personally I don't need to upgrade to a 2016 MacBook now, so I don't see any problem to buy this in two or three years.
Now let's try plugging those lightning earphones into your mac to watch netflix.. Oh wait.
+aidan I will make one. I'll be rich
Dongle free all the way!!! The future is wireless as i see.
SkeleCrafter i agree. They should have added the Type C ports WITH the necessary ones. Not replacing them.
SkeleCrafter yeah man, I think the future thing they talked or people talked about is just an excuse to get away with stressful questions.
I love this format of your channel. Keep it up!
I miss her and her creative videos :((( I've not seen her in any new videos of The Verge
This is the reason why I'll never get a 2016 MBP
So you’ll get 2017
Max Turner you need one dongle to do everything and more then the old 2015 macbook pro, and you will have 3 other thunderbolt 3 ports. You can connect egpus, and 8k monitors with thunderbolt3
When she asked for the photos just hand her the camera
:D
Jack Spencer right???
What would U do when U have no internet?
Haha then they'd wait and wait...and wait until they're connected again.
actually I live in the US I pretty much get internet all the time and also I can always in emergency hotspot my phone. So no I don't need to wait.
so your Bluetooth headphones never run out of battery?
I have a 2011 MacBook Pro with Ethernet port, FireWire, etc I still have to use a dongle to HDMI to plug it in to my screen and another dongle to VGA to connect it with my school projector.
U make such nice videos ...best on RUclips ! Keep the good work going !
Anker sells an all in one dongle. Just saying ya know. But don't worry, I'm not an apple fanboy.
Is it possible to bring Steve Jobs back from the dead, Apple has totally lost its way! Lol
I really wanted the new MacBook Pro to be good, but it's just infuriatingly flawed in so much aspects.....
I’m still rocking the late 2011 MacBook Pro with a 2.4 ghz core i5 and 8gb ram with El Capitan and I’ve never had a problem with it! It’s a beautiful and great little machine!
I've been waiting for a long time for this video
I still use my 2013 MacBook Air and have no reason to buy anything new.
Alex Garcia are you still using your 2013 MacBook Air?
Apple is trying to attack a market of having one cable that can do many things. The problem with the beginning of the industry or technology all these different cables were created because that was the way that company was making money. Now that our technology has evolved we can make one cable like (type c) to do what hdmi USB and all these other cables can do. A step into the forward! Something all companies will do in the near future!
A step forward *
their step forward should then have been, alongside the currently used hdmi/usb ports, have a Type C port as well.
Wee Ching Chok im not quite sure, but some day they will make their cable will be able to do all things all these different cables can do
JARED yes! but one day we won't have those ports anymore because they will be all the same
Nardotini Yupp! Now's that awkward transition period, that's why having those range of ports would better the user experience.
This is just the awkward stage between having USB c just think in the next 4 or 5 years we will have no ports
.
Shawn3090 Hp did the same with spectre only 3usb c ports
In 4-5 years those machines will already be at the later stages of their life...
quinn So, then the most logic option would be to still keep the old ports while adding usb type c for now, like any other manufacturer is doing
jmiquelmb its Apple they want to push forward these ports like remember the floppy disk drive they took that out and now no one uses that and the dvd drive they took that out they took that away and no one uses that so give it a few years plus its not like you have to buy it
I love these comparison video..once again doing a great show out there.Lauren love you ✌👌
Sitting watching this on my 2011 Macbook Pro, still going strong. Great video. I really wanted to upgrade but really need my ports, and SD card slot. Unfortunately, I may have to get a 2015 laptop, even though its gone up in price since last year and is just expensive as the new one when you add all the extras. Crazy.
