- In this video I present my first review of handmade watercolor paints. Unlike colored pencils or other mediums I use it is possible for anyone to make their own paints with commercial binder and pigments can make their own watercolor paints. However making good high quality paints is hard work and not easy. Unlike commercial paints, handmade paints can vary between batches and that is part of the charm. What is the brand of masking tape ( blue) you use it looks very good quality.

I use 3m scotch painters tape. It’s not the cheapest but like you see it is good quality.

For those of us who have never tried handmade watercolors, would you tell us the advantages of using them?
Hello, there are actually a lot of reasons. 1- sometimes some pigments are not found commercially. This is true for rare colors as well as extremely expensive ones. There is no true commercial lapis lazuli made in the old style because it’s so expensive. Half pans that are handmade sell for at least $50 each which is fair for how expensive the raw material is. 2- every maker of handmade paints is different and often makers has specific things they excel at, like vegan paints or all natural pigments or old world palettes 3- because each is unique, like any quality hand made product sometimes the appeal is just the character. These paints are wonderfully granulating for example.
