Peter Gabriel’s favourite instrument
more like his mission in life: :) : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sledgehammer
hi
I thought he used a drumstick hitting a phone book...
A Hammer? dun dun dun dun
Noo its the last one is the best
It must be really difficult to land that hit exactly on the beat, because you have to begin your swing so far before it.
They don't play on the beat. The conductor will follow them
@@andrewc4017 that makes sense. Something so heavy would be so hard to control
@@_Simon yeah, it definitely is what I though would happen
@@andrewc4017 They still have to be pretty close to the beat for that drumroll to line up
no its not difficult acutally, nearly same difficult as small swing, if u can sense it u can sense it
“I’m a professional musician”
Mahler wrote in his scores that all of the hammer players must be employed by the local carpenters Union so as not to tarnish the reputations of professional musicians
@@brospore7897 thats very thoughtful, insulting, and amusing
The average orchestral performance rarely approaches the dignity of manual labour. He was protecting the carpenters.
@@brospore7897 I never heard that but it is a very funny joke. The same could be said for a triangle player if he only played the triangle, (Ed Grimley) which they don't just like the hammer blow player. He probably plays at least the bass drum and whatever other percussion instrument he can play when not busy that nobody else is playing
Imagine that guy having to wait 36 bars of silence just to get to that one hit 😂
And then miscalculating and hitting it at the wrong time! #JustPercussionistThings
lol, no anxiety here.
Have you listened to the percussion part of Bruckner Symphony No.7?
@@yu-hengwang8338 All twenty or so notes, why sure!😅
I guess you’re not a percussionist. I don’t have to imagine 🥱
Nobody talking about the last one? That poor guy getting hit in the back
That's why I'm in the comment section. Loll.
Poor guy got domed
💀💀💀
Man almost got killed 💀☠️
Almost no one watches videos to the very end. Look at any video's analytics.
Just seeing these people dressed in fancy high-class orchestra clothes while holding a cartoonishy large hammer over their heads is funny to me.

The third hammer has the best sound.
I think the 4th one is a bit better - it's also cool how they put some flour or dust on it for effect
They’ve all been recorded with different microphones at different distances. There’s no way to say for sure which is the best and also no way to capture how powerful this sounds in person.
@@samh9795 probably talc. That was very cool. Looked like a video game or movie character was gonna walk out from it.
Agreed
Conducted an arrangement for wind ensemble and used a similar setup. Layers of particle board and plywood on top of a sturdy, but hollow, wooden box. Big "thump" sound.
Impressive, but it doesn't beat the best instrument of all....... The Cannon
Ayyyy, I almost forgot that was a thing-

How dare you. The greatest instrument is obviously the chicken.
Agreed
Tchaikovsky no
0:41 NOOO NO JARED PLEEEAASE HE'S JUST PLAYING THE TIMPANI HE HAS A WIFE A LITTLE BOY AND A LITTLE GIRL AND A NEWBORN AT HOME, YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THIS IT'S NOT WORTH IT LEAVE HIM ALONE, PLEEEEAAASE!!??!?
This comment cracked me up LOL
I already lol'd before I saw your comment but this made me crack up all the way
I remember reading that, at the time, people thought the hammer sucked. Guess Mahler got the last laugh.
@Guodlca it’s a banger
@@theexcaliburone5933 just like your pun
Mahler had a unique sound world. Hammers, cow bells, gongs, organs, choirs, sleigh bells, you name it. But, all used with care and for a reason.
It did at 1st; Mahler commissioned an oversized bass drum and it didn't work. They had to come up with something else that did work, and this is the result.
That’s how I felt in symphonic band when I slammed two literal 2x4s together to create the whip crack in “Sleigh Ride”
That sounds so uncomfortable compared to an actual whip crack
@@Paul2hip8 surprisingly wasn’t, you just hold them in a giant v-shape and *WHACK*
Our wind symphony does Sleigh Ride every year, and we always have someone cracking an actual whip. One year the whip person accidentally hit something metal and sparks flew lmao
Our percussion does the same thing every year for concert band they also have a rattle box that’s full of metal nuts and bolts and other random things that they just drop in another piece
AHAHAHAH I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE
The third one rules, holding the hammer against the target for the correct duration.
1:26 that i call "immersive music"
You can really feel the hit of the hammer!
That's when the full emotional palette of the music hits you like a sledgehammer!
A LOT OF DAMAGE
12 to be exact. Can increase up to 34 with modifiers. And remember the 4× damage on Taluses.
@@casperdewith we got the D&D wiki here
@@Pietro.Valente D&D? Nah, if you know, you know.
percussionists in classical music: *Hits one note in the middle of the song*
"My work here is done"
You know you're a good hammer player when everyone around you covers their ears and brace for impact
Never seen this live, but can imagine when it’s done right, striking a big altar on stage like that sends a physical impulse through the entire stage that the audience can feel more than they can hear, that’s something you could ONLY experience live.
Non-musician: "What instrument do you play?"
Musician: "I play the hammer."
NM: "The hammer isn't an instrument, ya dingus!"
Mahler and Wagner:
No, that's the Musician's mic drop: "Mahler and Wagner!" Mic drop, and possible feedback noise after.
0:42, the angle it’s filmed from makes it look like the guy with the hammer intends harm…
Mahler would have loved modern production, where you can sample literally any sound and craft it in post to get the perfect emotional effect
i think about that all the time, imagine if they had access too daws the stuff they could have made would have been insane
That hammer at 1:00 though. That is looney tunes large!
Has the best sound IMO.
All I'm thinking of is where do they get these hammers? If I had to do this as a once in a while thing, I would probably just tie a handle to a log or something. But apparently every concert hall has that one closet labelled "Mahler hammer" and you need to ask the old janitor for the key or something
They're often custom made - and the boxes that the hammers are used on are almost always custom made to achieve the sound Mahler asked for
0:24 When the clip has the sound quality of an early 1980s black metal demotape, you know it's a good one
That timpanist was really "please don't miss it"
Bernstein just had to be extra with that mega hammer didn't he?
Plus the beard!
"you're telling me you became ripped by playing an instrument?"
Mahler wanted to dedicate this piece to Thor
Thor: breaks his Mjolnir.
Also Thor, to Mahler: Gustav, I will break you!!!
I remember using a Mahler box in an ensemble. We custom built it, and it was like 5 feet tall. We had to use a chair to even get up to hit it, it was insane
I thought he was going to hit the guys head 🤣
Oh nevermind, he did 🤣
@@Jakku_Azzo a realization at the end huh
Damn Warner Bros.😅
The third one has great sound plus the dude using the hammer held it down I think it looks badass
I was not ready for that lol
Bang, bang Mahler's Stroking Hammer came down upon their heads...
"What instrument you do play?"
"Hammer."
Second hammer went *bonk*
1:00 is the recording I use as a bass trombone player when I practice that excerpt
I love the great dignity of the guy with the pony tail in a tuxedo.
Absolutely that 3rd one was spectacular! I jumped out of my chair when I felt that! Also the Bernstein version is very very good!
0:45 looks like he’s about to murder that guy
I went to see the new york phil perform this and it was funny to see people who had fallen asleep jump up during this part 😂
I didn’t know the hammer was such a recognizable sound. That’s cool that this is how they get that sound
Especially 1:26
Imagine missing the 3rd hammer stroke in Mahler 6
That would take the name of the symphony to a whole other level lmao
0:24 bro got a full penguin on just to play one note, but I must say he knocked it tf out
no one:
horror movies when the killer is right behind you: 0:40
0:26
Thats the mahler smack ive been looking for!
Imagine missing this once in a life time beat after waiting for it the whole piece. 😂
I want to hear a recording where they split a log of wood instead
Tchaikovsky: Hold my Cannon
You haven't lived unless you had a strike like this, and missed your beat.
Imagine missing the beat after waiting for 30bars
You know, the first few times I watched this, I thought the timpani in the fourth clip was bracing for the noise. Now it seems pretty clear to me that he's more so watching to try to line up exactly with the hammer. Noice.
Is no one really gonna talk about the last hammer flying off and hitting the guy's head 😂
Okay let's talk about that. How about that huh?
@@aarona.aaronson9621 finally
It sounds like when a hero is about to die but his sidekick saves him
0:30 is the best sounding box whack.
Mahler: "My composition uses a giant hammer". Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: "Hold my vodka"
"so what instrument do you play?"
"Mjolnir"
FOR THE CRUSADERS!
0:25 mightily pounds the hammer and gazes at his sheet like he has done something puzzling
bro those octaves in the low trombones.... daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamnnnn they might even be better than the hammer itself
" Hello, 911 ... what is your emergency? "
Caller - " Yes! We have a musician suffering T.B.I. at a local concert. "
911 - " Ok. Were they in a Mosh Pit or Stage Diving? "
Caller - " No. I am the conductor of an orchestra and one of my horn players was hit in the back of the head by an extremely large hammer. "
911 - " Who hit him? "
Caller - " My Hammer Guy. "
911 _ " Ok, y'all need to stop playin' around on my line! "
** disconnect **
We have got a broken Mahler hammer at Carnegie hall. Repeat: broken Mahler hammer at the Carnegie. All ER units, scramble, scramble! A broken Mahler hammer!
1:10 I love how the player tries to pull the sound out like they would a timpani
0:25 best one
LoL... the guy at 0:47 watching that no Bugs Bunny type of shit beef or funny business with the hammer is going on between him and the guy striking it. LoL
1 cup flour
1 Sledgehammer
Looks like he was trying to match the final beat with the hammer..
1: orgasmic
2: so dull it takes away all the mightiness
3: MMMMM yes
4: eh
5: odd
6: good
7:
The third one was how I imagined what Mahler was looking for.
Props to that dude that kept the hammer down
The Roblox “oof” sound got me AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I like the song where it goes like “…………………………………………..BOOM!!!………………………………………………..”
The last one has me in stitches, just like the hapless victim!!!!!! 😂😂😂
0:44 excellent use of baby powder!
the last one has the best sound
The hammer at 0:30 was the best I think bc, as Mahler mentioned, it was meant to sound like an axe which cuts through wood, as that hammer did when it broke the first piece of wood. Very nice 👏🏽
This inspired Queen's song "Hammer to fall" 😆
This is why percussion is the most fun :D
YES
what instrument do you play?
"percussions"
June Lee we need it
This is just a classier version of Hurra Torpedo.
The last one 💀💀💀
yea the third one was pretty good, but the last one had more of an impact
😩
that's my "i really like this pun" emoji
Canons, Mayo, and now hammers are musical instruments 😭
- Que instrumento você toca na orquestra?
- Martelo.
- O que? Martelo?!
- Sim. Martelo.
When classical turns into court
The name of the last hammerist is Maxwell?
"Bang! Bang! Maxwell's silver hammer
Came down upon his head
Clang! Clang! Maxwell's silver hammer
Made sure that he was dead
Wo-wo-wo-woh"
I like the third just because it doesn’t bounce back
If you haven't heard live in performances in a good hall, you haven't heard it. There's nothing like it.
Mahler's 10th symphony, unfinished
If anyone could tell me, has John Williams ever used this in star wars? Cause the thump sounds familiar.
Don't know about the hammer on wood but he did use a mallet and a steel pipe in one score
Staring a new jam band and looking for a lead hammer dude, hit me up!
Conductor: bruh what do u mead u just break the bass drum? well seems like we'll just have to improvise then
when a ffffffff bass drum hit isnt enough so you need a hammer instead:
He need a floppy hammer for more kinetic energy!
End's EPIC lmao
It's-a me, Mahler!
The hammer was put on the score for the show, not for the audio effect. It's fun to see the hit live, but in audio recordings it doesn't make much of an impact. You got to see it done to understand what Mahler was trying to do with a hammer in a symphony.
0:32 . . . Did. He break the wooden peice?
5 was very special
The Mjolnir of Music.
The hammer is the best instrument you can have in an orchestra
"Laughs in Tchaikovsky"
Who had that genius idea to put powder on the anvil for cinematic effect, Jackie Chan style... 😂
imagine missing the hit by a beat 😭
More hammer vs more cowbell.
