  • Michigan’s most haunted cemetery is at the lost town of Pere Cheney. This small town up North lost almost all of its people to a plague in the late 1800s. Join me at the town's cemetery and a walk about the old streets in search of signs of life from the past pioneers that have gone before us.

Hi there! I live 5 miles from Pere Cheney! Over the years I've blogged extensively about our local spooky place. I can absolutely attest to some of these happenings in the cemetery! Last summer my ex and I were out and about trailing until the very early hours of the morning in my truck. We decided to drive over to Pere Cheney to "see is anything is good over in the boneyard". We were parked in the turnaround and had the windows open as it was about 75. At 3 or so, we heard a train whistle. I work at one of the large sawmills about 4 miles away from there and I know for a fact no one was getting deliveries at 3am on a Sunday morning. We heard the train whistle again, this time a bit closer. I walked over to the tracks and saw absolutely nothing. No lights, no nothing. Then we heard is AGAIN, only this time it literally right next to me. Both my ex and I screamed like children and peeled out of there as fast as we could without bottoming my truck out in those big dips in the two-track. I've seen some weird stuff out there in my 30 years of living here, but that train whistle took the cake. Why didn't I record it? We tried, but both of our phones went dead immediately.

Scary, for sure. But I think it's terrific when someone experiences a time warp and tells about it. I hope it hasn't warped your spirit. I'm sure if it happened to me, it would have changed my thinking from then on.

There is a train that runs by all those factories on 4 mile like 1-2 miles away. This summer I went out there with my niece and on the way back the train was stopped on the tracks outside braklite at like 1:30am doing some kind of maintenance checks that took like 20 minutes. Wish it a ghost train would have been faster, 20 minutes waiting on a train just you and the train feels like forever after you've been crawling around a cemetery at night.

Also, I came across your video with intent on other people’s stories and just some info to gather to send to the Ghost Adventures producers. I hope you don’t mind if I send this to them as well. It’s a long time coming. Pere Cheney is such an old well known place for anyone around here, so it would be cool if they came and got us some sort of proof. If nothing else I know they’ll be intrigued. It has the backstory of how all of these people died tragically from disease and fires. Countless witnesses and their stories for years. The creepy look and old age of it all. All of the things they seem to look for on the show, and they’d have the equipment to do it all.

I've been to Pere Cheney . My brother and I were just looking around and reading the stones.
After about an hour, we decided to go back to my cottage near Higgins lake. He asked me the time, so I pulled my cellphone out of my pocket put it in frount of my face, then poof it shut off .
    Never happened before or since.

    I go here every year.
Had the car not start one time,it was a brand new rental. 3 hours later it starts right up. But it had kids hand prints , in the dust all over the car.
I heard screaming one time from the woods.
& one time a Buddy and me where there. And we went exploring back in the woods. But got ran off by some creapy looking guy.
I have had experiences every time I go.
It's much more active in the evenings then it is during the day.
The day time is more peaceful.
But after that car not starting experience, now I got with friends. & we take multiple cars & cables to jump a battery.

About 10 years ago I went out there with my sister my brother-in-law and a buddy of mine. We got there kind of late afternoon we were alone and it Was raining out a little so we made sure to roll up the windows and lock the truck. It was pretty calm and peaceful. We spent a few hours exploring and reading the tombstones no big deal. But when we got back to the truck all the windows were down mind you the windows were electric and we were sure we rolled them up because of the rain. The crazy thing though was there were some small handprints in the mud on the doors and small fingerprints at the top of the windows almost like someone had pulled the window down from the top. nothing was missing but the seats were a bit damp from the rain. We skedaddled.

They were probably doing a dig on the property where the outhouses were. A lot of the homes garbage was thrown down the outhouse hole and some very interesting things have been found in those digs including gorgeous bottles . We live just about 45 minutes south of the town and have been wanting to visit.

Grew up just north of here and visited Pere Cheney about half a dozen times between 2004-2007, during highschool and shortly after I graduated.
At the time, no ones cell phones had good service out there. We would usually turn them off to save battery and turn them back on once we got back to 4 mile rd exit. One trip my friends cell phone had a voicemail from his own number while his phone was off. We didnt receive it til we got back on the highway. The voicemail was about a 3 min recording of all of us in the truck discussing about the town and the myths about it.
Another time, we took a bunch of photos with a digital camera while exploring and there was clear orbs and lights in the woods in the photos. Heard voices in the woods while trying to find the town. After leaving and stopping at the truck stop near 4 mile rd exit, we discovered kids hand prints in the mud/dust of the sides and back of the car. This was at like 1 am and there was no one else around that couldve made those prints.
Always felt cold spots, especially crossing over the fence row from the parking area.
I will never forget these experiences.

My friend and daughter and I went there later part of August 2023 my experience was cool. When ever I go to a cemetery I talk to the people asking for them to show themselves some how.
The daughter said she saw out of the corner of her eye like smoke coming from a grave stone frank dompier believe is the name 75 years old died 1919.
We walked over to the grave I said Frank you showed your self to the younger girl now can you show to the other person.
The other person was walking towards the back I walked towards her she came away from there feeling a heaviness like she was being buried.
I walked back there and it was peaceful.
Would like to know how Frank died curious if it was by a fire

Handprints on the cars. Yes. That’s absolutely a thing. That was our experience as well. This was 15 years ago guys before this handprint thing is like “a thing” so we didn’t read about it and say it happened or anything. Besides that… as an empathic sensitive person I had zero haunting experience there. I’m sure there’s activity but if so it’s benevolent and just… a place of rest. I hope people respect that. Don’t vandalize someone’s gravesite that’s not funny it’s cruel and unnecessary. Haunted? Yes. Scary? No. I agree with how you’re feeling sir. That’s how I remember feeling also. A somber, but sort of like calm. I didn’t get to see the town though. That still intrigues me. The story of how they died is unusual and makes you wonder.
There’s a house toward Tawas in the woods abandoned that we have visited in the past a few times and every single time there was definitely poltergeist activity and the energy was entirely different. The PSB7 goes mad. You see things visually and hear things with your own ears. The car electronics wig out and like stop you from leaving in ways the car has never done before nor since…. Just… freaky as hell. Coming up on that house you sense it. The rumors are there was a person that hung themselves outside on the old tree. I don’t know if that’s fact or not. I haven’t been there in like 6 years, so I don’t know the place is still standing, but most likely. I had no intention on visiting again after the little girl i saw in the home, and the vocal like growls. The ghost box saying the girls name who was in the car and didn’t get out to come in with us. Her name was Che like “shay” and this thing was calling her out over and over and over again. Then as we went to leave the car was running with che inside to keep warm alone but the moment I try to leave the car does some kind of strange electrical thing I’ve never seen it do before and the screen kept saying all these messages I’ve never seen before and the car would not turn over electrically. We were stranded there like that for maybe an hour and somehow it finally stopped, and like nothing happened… we drove out. THAT is a haunted northern Michigan place.

@@DraysWorld it’s off M-55 on the way to Tawas on a dirt road a ways. Road isn’t as treacherous as the Pere Cheney trail though. I’d have to ask around to remember the name of the road to turn on. But once you pull up you just can’t miss it you’ll know the place right when you see it… Do it at night with a buddy someday lol.

I always thought the “pink stone” marker was the “witch”. I remember it not being fully there. I remember the big broken tomb stone too.
I was last there over 20 years ago. My friend and i took pictures. We have some from the first time we went but never developed the second roll. I remember hitting a mosquito on the top of my head and seeing a lot of blood. Fun fun. I don’t like that people mess it up.

My old job night shifts alone at a retirement home… man lol. I could tell you story after story. Impossible things. I have a PSB7 and a pretty tuned in psychic mind and empathic abilities. From voices, footsteps like with a walker coming down hallways, fire alarms going off, hissing and scratching and shaking of a closed door of an empty room with no windows in it, being in the laundry room alone and the lights are turned off on you in pitch black and nobody’s there and they turn back on, certain rooms with energy that will make someone like me literally sick and ill as though whoever was living in the room or died there is still there or the residual energy of how they felt you feel it, things moving, residents yelling at things that aren’t there…. It was a trip. Everyone on staff had stories, but probably myself most being the night shift lone wolf when everyone’s asleep and it’s quiet and it’s only you there. You gotta think these are people who have dementia and all kinds of things, and many who died and likely didn’t know they died. The PSB7 was always active if I turned it on it would say my first name. It would say angels and spirits. Names of those who lived and died there. Number of people in the room. Intelligent responses. Unfortunately it’s where people live and they’re elderly and everything so as badly as I’d love to see a real investigation of it…. It can’t happen until one day the place is unoccupied lol. If there are any places like that now, then that’s where I’d go for ghost hunting.

I here since so many people died in such a short time. Some got buried together in mass graves.. because they didn't have the help to take care of them all individually..
Some say this is what makes the place more active.
I been to a couple places in MI. That because of so many people passing in such a short time. The town had to bury them all together, in one mass grave.
A lot of families in one plot, instead of digging holes for them all individually.

I will shear my experience My friend Mark father had property that backed up to the road where the railroad tracks and cemetery are. We were sitting around a camp fire late fall when Mark said he sees some lights through the woods he was facing the direction of the cemetery we all turned to look we could see the same thing, That area is a lot of pine trees with not a lot of under growth or was i have not been there in a long time. Anyway it looked like people walking with flash lights three of them so Marks dad thinking it was kids messing around in the cemetery we all walked back there. It was a full moon that night we walked the fence line straight back the hole while seeing lights moving when we got to the road across from the cemetery there was nothing there no cars no people and no lights you could see the hole place .We stayed there for maybe 10 minutes then walked back to the campfire sat there maybe 5 minutes this time we were all facing the area and again it looked like people walking around with flash lights this time we ran back there and the same thing nothing. It ended up we went back there four time and found nothing never forget it.
