    *RIP Hilton Valentine* -- just heard that he passed away today (30, 01/2021). He was guitarist for The Animals and had some of rock's most truly memorable guitar riffs under his fingers in his time!

      The amp helps, though mine is a modelling amp rather than the real thing. I think you can get that sound with other amps. McGuinn uses Fenders live, and went DI into the desk in the studio. Good compression is probably a bigger factor.

    Hello Everyone, it's been a long time coming, but I finally got part 2 up - ironically the pandemic meant my job got even more hectic, that's why there's only 10 songs, but I'm putting together a list for part 3, no doubt due sometime in 2022!
    The usual caveat applies, I know a lot of these songs *are* well known classics, it's just I don't think they tend to get enough respect as "legendary" twelve string based songs and riffs, (for example, "Pretty Woman", say compared to flipping *Supertramp*!).
    Thanks to the wonderful commenters on my previous vids, it's been great in the past year to read so many positive friendly and encouraging comments in what has been for so many people a really tough year, a number of whom gave great suggestions, a couple of which I've included here.

    The introductory riff and then the line, "It's my life, and I'll do what I want, it's my mind and I'll think what I want" always reverberated with my self perceived rebellious side. Addendum: I have retired twice, and at my age and based on reflection, I am further convinced that one should live one's life for one self, without bending over backwards to please others while sacrificing one's dreams. It is my hope I won't be misunderstood. I am not referring to being obnoxious or socially maladaptive; it's just that often times the idea of being blindly compliant is counterproductive, especially to someone who is self reliant and has a clear sense of direction.

    I might have already put in a comment, though I am sure it's different. Anyway, I am retired (have been for some years) and I have been playing guitars for a large part of my life. My point is that guitars have been one of the stabilizing factors in my life, and they have gotten me through thick and thin. Seeing these riff videos, especially those played on 12 string electric guitars, not only take me back, but also provide me with the incentive to learn them well enough to play an sing. The one for "It's My Life" is high on the list.

      Question: Did you ever play the Fender Villager 12-string? If so, what did you think of it? I had one in 1972, and it was my favorite of all time - wonderful neck, radiused fretboard, fabulous tone and projection, and that crazy internal truss tube. I have one now I got on E-bay - but the body is beat... I'm planning to use the neck on a project guitar.

      @@edfederoff2679Saw one in a shop once, didn't play it but it had a bolt on neck! First time I'd ever seen that on an acoustic.

      @@DylanPank71 Thank you, Dylan. That guitar was a gift from the gods, who dropped it in my lap via a Navy buddy who couldn't play it, but wanted a hundred cash to go drinking with - we settled on 70. I had it a year, and lost it on a military standby flight - the guitar got on the plane, but not me. It "disappeared" from baggage claim in Philly. United paid me 270 - but I'd much rather had the guitar - that one was special, compared to all the others of that model I've played since. I have an Eastwood Classic Twelve - semi-hollow, thin body and neck, dual Humbuckers - a joy to play. I use a little VOX DA5 modeler, both PU's, and it'll chime as though it has single coils on the high gain and drive Styles, and even better with a little reverb and tremolo/reverb dialed in. It gets that wonderful McGuinn/Petty Rick sound - but I still want a vintage Rick!! LOL

      I've found most guitarists are a bit intimidated by 12's. They have an idea they never can be tuned, and they don't know what to play on them. There is a learning curve to go through, then the devotion begins. I'm absolutely sure you know exactly what I mean just by your playing. As I see it, we have a different instrument, but we have all chords already from a regular guitar.
      In the last couple of years I have been a travel size guitar with Nashville tuning and has a wonderful resonance and interest. You're probably aware of this, but it's all good stuff. Keep it up,that's good playing there.

    A major oversight are songs by The Seekers. Judith was the heart and soul of the group but the twelve string played by Keith was a part of their sound.
    Would enjoy hearing your thoughts about tuning. Is it the nightmare as so often described?

    • @DylanPank71
      @DylanPank71  6 месяцев назад

      You're right about The Seekers, I should have had them in there - maybe part 3!
      Tuning-wise It depends on the guitar and the strings. I find the RIck is pretty stable, the Dano less so (you might notice on my previous Dano only 12 string video).
      I gather the trick is to make the high octave strings relatively heavier than their bass counterparts, but not all sets are gauged that way.
