RIP Steve Bronski (1960 - 2021) and Larry Steinbachek (1960 - 2016). Those of us who grew up with your music treasure it always.
Requiescat in pacem, 🥲😢😿🙏😇, desde el cielo alegrando el ambiente y el ♥️.
They deserve a. great Best of. or. concerts. we can't forget them
The spikes did their job
Ce titre est sorti il y a 40 ans et je l'écoute toujours.
OH I DID4NT KNOW FOR STEVE ! Oh so sad. RIP
RIP Steve Bronski..this album was a groundbreaker ...amazing
Could of said the actual title: The Age of Consent!
The age of consent, very mach !!!!!🎉
Brilliant song very Unterated
Old jazz number
"It Ain't Necessarily So" is a popular song with music by George Gershwin and lyrics by Ira Gershwin. The song comes from the Gershwins' opera Porgy and Bess (1935) where it is sung by the character Sportin' Life, a drug dealer, who expresses his doubt about several statements in the Bible. The song's melody also functions as a theme for Sportin' Life's character. This song came under direct critique from composer Hall Johnson for depicting African Americans as unfaithful.
To Jeremy Haines, this song was, in fact, very highly rated in mid 20th century. Written by George Gershwin for jazz opera Porky & Bess. Sammy Davis, Jr sang it in movie version. I highly recommend it. You can be reassured the song and Sammy Davis are well loved
It'a cover as others have commented. Jimmy Somerville covered several classic songs from years past during the 80s and even more recent songs of the time like the Donna Summer song I Feel Love. He did a great job with them.
It's not underrated, it's a fab song.
Hot damn, their debut record was flawless. Yep, RIP Steve and Larry. Thank you for... being.
What a great tune and voice!...Thank you Jimmy Sommerville and your music buddies over the years...
The tune is not original, although it is an excellent interpretation.
@@Mel_ilm I know...the original (excluding the Gershwin standard which sounds TOTALLY different) is from the 60's, I believe...but it's nowhere near this great version, I'm afraid...
Sweet comment
angel 🫀
One of them is the Rev Richard Coles, who also played the clarinet.
"Things that your're liable to read in The Bible ain't necessarily so." Top tune!
Rest in peace Steve Bronski thank you for bringing so many beautiful tracks to the world
Peace, facepalm!
@@gaywizard2000 thank You
Not heard this in a lifetime....last time I heard back in the 80s...Completely forgotten about this gem....
That entire album
Is brushed with
Divinity
And charm
And class.
I tap dance to itt.
On good days,
Cry WITH it
On others.

This needs to be re-discovered.. I would expect it to reach a billion
how lucky we were to grow up in the 80s and have amazing music like this as the soundtrack of our childhood and youth. What a great reward, happy birthday Jimmy Somerville
I was 22 and living abroad and on my own for the first time back then . My residence was for students from all over the world. We had the wildest kitchen parties on Saturdays, and Bronski Beat was always on. Nothing quite captures thespirit of the 80s like Jimmy Sommerville's beguiling voice does.
You do realise that this music was only made because the 80s were so horrific? It is protest music against the terrible social attitudes at the time. We were lucky to have the music, but very, very unlucky to live in such nasty times as the 80s.
It would have been magnifiscent if Jimmy and Annie Lennox did a duet!!!
Could have been a really interestin' musical combination. Music is Emotion. Emotion is Melody. Melody is Love. Love is Life. Life is Music. ✌️🏻
Ain't necessarily so!
what great music ♡♡♡ Remember listening to the whole album on tape. 80s were the best !
Sin dudas ❣️, lo mejor, los 80'
Back in the 80’s, this song gave me the curiosity to find the world of George & Ira Gershwin.
There used to be a time when some cinemas used to show random pop videos before the main feature- and this is where I saw this video first in Cardiff in 1984 before the movie "Something Wicked This Way Comes". I've been listening to it ever since. Such feeling of the optimism of youth when I see this video again for the first time in 35 odd years.
Yes I remember it coming out that album 'Age of Consent' I was 13 and already thinking and trying to work out what was different about me to what the 'grown ups' were not saying... I went to a Roman Catholic School. Kinda says it all really. But when my brother bought the album I used to nick it all the time! He was never amused. 😅
I remember reading on the cover all of the countries age of consent... I was not sure what that meant but it said on it for England and Wales 21, Scotland 21, Northern Ireland, illegal and all other countries that were aged or illegal. All about gay rights and something clicked in my head. I used to listen to small town boy again thinking about what was different? I had no frame of reference to gay people except characters like John Innman (Mr Humphries - I'm free) and Larry Grayson (shut that door) Kenneth Williams, (Julien and Sandy) All very camp with a bit of a strange language here and there but even so there was some kind of recognition to myself.
I've liked boys all my life I tried with a girl but it was like kissing a fish!
I was really into Communards too as time went on and I left school at 16 after being mercilessly bullied for f**king years.
I met my first proper boyfriend in 1987 both 16 both illegal. But in the darkness of the cinema (when they used to be properly dark) getting up to all sorts... to think if we'd been caught!
So yes BB and Communards played a lot of help through music... Tell Me Why is probably my favourite BB song. For a Friend my favourite Communards song. All this and with the scary AIDS tombstone with John Hurts booming voice.. it was hard to understand what was going on.
I had gone to nursing college away from home. Thankfully I had finally had had some sex education by then.. not through school that was sure.. I was off to hell anyway!
It's funny how looking back I was very at risk but thankfully due to bands like this, Culture Club, and even Queen also charities like Terrance Higgins Trust which started around the same time I was one of the lucky ones.
So love this song. Both musically and politically
Didn't know they used to play music vids before screenings, what a great & uplifting experience. Now all we get soul destroying adverts and corporate sponsors. The 80s and 90s.. people were happier & music was better. I think people who experienced the 20th century were probably the luckiest, I hate the digital age.
I saw it too in Cardiff before Ghost busters late 1984 :-)

...and the grass was greener😁
No borders for music. No age, time, geographic, political, faith or any other.
ain't necessarily so... 🥁 ✌️🏻
One of my favourite songs (ex-catholic) and a brilliant film clip xxxx
The video is so funny 😄 I was brought up a Catholic
i'm going crazy, this is the follow-up story to smalltown boy, unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! now the thing gets a sense and a meaning, this is true art!!!! the two songs inspire me since 1984
It is a take on Cool Hand Luke.
The song is from Porgy & Bess. An instrumental version is the theme song for the FFRF videos.
@@Anne--Marie
Absolutely. Good for you.
I'm from Moscow. Served in the Army those times.
It all coincides... almost))
They took the piece from Brecht. And put the idea into another time.
Everyone wins. Not the Russians ((
Gershwin...
Maybe Russian maybe not.
@@rogerroger568 That's interesting information; thank you!

From Moscow-77😁
This was the first track I heard on the album - well the studio tape, pre-production. That raw sound was something else! The tracks were re-ordered for the released album. It has a big impact on those who heard it, and did wonders for the LGBT community too.
Was sad when Larry passed away. Sad again. RIP Steve.
With the Rev Richard Coles on clarinet! Before Jimmy Somerville left Bronski Beat and teamed up with Richard Coles in the Communards.
I wish he'd stayed with Bronski Beat for one more record. I never got into the Communards.
Wasn't Arno Hecht on clarinet?
my mum's ringtone for all these years
I love your mom!
@@Chalwa I love his mom too!
Me too, your mum is AWESOME
Fantastic tune taken by the genius of George Gershwin !
most of the ppl speaking about the music aspect which is stunning and a gernius melody but the clip itself is awesome too!! love it! a touch of class by Steve , Larry and Jimi !
who listening now 2024🐺🦊🦝
I`m listening now; I know the song, but what movie or show is this clip from?
i didit think they did a movie
Still listening, never stopped.
Genius song. Genius arrangement
Storytellers and sensational musicians. They painted a beautiful picture of the LGBT to the world, being incredible supporters of the movement in the UK. I'm a "90s kid" but this music resonates to me, deep to my soul.
Por you, if this music resonates deep to you’re soul.
I LOVE IT. My dad used to listen to this song when I was 12... I loved and I still love it ✨🤍 a masterpiece
It's truly wonderful, i was singing it out loud when I was about 11yrs old and my brother and his mates took the piss big time. 🤗
Your dad has great taste.
This is timeless.
Yes ,seems a mix) sounds so s/s some one may b forgotten x
That is because the things in the Buybull have never neccesarily been so, ever! Thanks and shout out to Gerschwin for writing the music!
BB has the best and the most beautiful version ever amid their excellent re-arrangements and singing and its one of my most favourite song since its release in 1983.
Most music fades, some vanishes as soon as you turn from it, yet the few echo through a space where time does not exist
Yes just so happy to have been in the 70"s and 80's to remember this. Just great!
Grazie Bronski Beat. Grazie! Che meraviglia! Beati noi che c'eravamo.
Interesting version of George Gershwin's work.
SNES Fan89 Indeed.

My childhood….. so many memories ❤️
Love. That clarinet or whatever it is is just gorgeous in all versions. That piano bridge and Jimmy Somerville's angel voice too.
It's a clarinet 😊
if you love this clarinet.. I suggest you search for "love and money" from the same album.
(oh.. the instrument on that may not be a clarinet) 🙂
Will check that out! :)@@oscargraveland
RIP Steve Bronski and also Larry steinbachek 😢🙏

Oscar Peterson's rendition the best.
this is my fave bronski song was a total departure from the first two hits bonus it was a gershwin song checked it out years later was 17 when it came out no idea back then a much under rated 80s hit jimmy just sings beautifully here takes me back to a better time.

Arte puro!!! Saludos de un Argentino. Steve Bronsky descansa en paz. Gracias por tu música. Quedaste para la eternidad. Los genios nunca mueren.
Çoincido 100% con tu opinión. Bronsky beat, de lo mejor de los 80'
Just seen him do this live. As good as ever!
Fabuleuse reprise de bronski beat dans leur album qui fit un carton mondial au début des années 80. Cet album très politique a son époque mérite le respect et la reconnaissance de l'humanité toute entière.
One of the greatest video ever made.
Sleep tight steve and thanku xxxxx
Although the Bronski version should have been a much bigger hit here in Australia.. I think it’s still considered one of their most popular tracks ..!
Bronski beat class band brilliant song one of my favourites
Bossa nova x jazz fantastic!
True!!!
Anybody who gives this a thumbs down needs to book the afternoon off of work and go and get your hearing tested,,,what a track.

Steve Bronski was so cute... RIP Steve 😔😔
Hardly recognised him. The uniform suits him perfectly 😀
That intro gives such a twin peaks vibe 🏔
I came across "The Age of Consent" album in 1980 purely by accident in a little local record store. Like finding a diamond on a beach.
meant to type 1980's....my bad....was probably 1985 I think.
@@krobk1953 If you found it in 1980, it truly was a rare diamond... Time traveling diamond.
@@spacecat6022 Ha Ha It was indeed 1984, I stand corrected. I just remember it was a great "find" that I didn't expect, and yes it was a long time ago. Thank for pointing out my memory failure.

That's the Reverend Richard Coles on clarinet.

I’d forgotten about the video for this tune. Finding fun in a mince pie eating contest is wonderful! George and Ira Gershwin are my fave composers, so when they join with Bronski Beat, it’s a real joy!
0:04 SLY COOOOOOPER FLASHBACKS? HOLY SH*T🤯😍😍😍
And I thought I was the only one
@@supesrebirth152 i think that's the song of those from sly cooper
For those of us who have no idea what the "plot" is here, apparently it's a mince-pie eating contest in a prison. Or reform school.
Borstal.
Timeless, timeless. Definately
Jazzy groove
It was written by brothers George and Ira Gershwin in 1935 for the musical "Porgy And Bess" there's been loads of versions of it, lots of them done as jazz songs
One of my fav ! Love the intro 🤩 2021 liitle lockdown again ,so Lets injoy this moment togetter
Clever guys bringing Gershwin to the masses long before anyone else did.
Yes because there was nothing pre 80s. Don't confuse your ignorance for that of the rest of us.
Brilliant love Jimmy videos always make me laugh, happy days.
