  • WE MADE PROGRESS! DK3 is fixed! Big thanks to those who helped. I'm not going to lie, access to other boards helps! I was able to swap ROMs and try out a high score saves/free play kit which eliminates ROMS. By doing that we were able to determine that it was a bad ROM before I had an EPROM programmer. Thanks go out to Jay at FreeplayRI, NEMike and Rob.
Here's the TL;DR version: a program ROM was bad and 6H for sound was bad. NEMike sent me a burned ROM for 6H to fix the sound issue. Jay from Freeplay RI when I was down helping out allowed me to test my board in his DK3 and use his HSS kit to 'verify ROMs'. That essentially eliminated my ROMs and narrowed it down to that area. One/Two of the four ROMs in that area were bad. I purchased a HSS Kit for DK3 from www.highscoresaves.com and that fixed the issue without having to burn new ROMs or replace sockets.

Hey Tim, great job. During the fix, did you add batteries to the board before you put the board back in? I noticed there was an empty battery holder soldered there.

I didn't as they aren't needed with the kit. And with my luck, I'd forget all about them and then they would leak!

So, was that Ziilog CPU the problem after fixing Rom? Does game work with original CPU and no highscore save kit?
    Congrats!

You know, I should pop it in and check, but after I determined it was a ROM issue I went back to the original CPU. The game didn't work without the HSS kit with either CPU

Orignal Z80 CPU is a Z80A new one are a standard Z80. I believe the difference is they run at a different Meg Hertz. The Z80A runs at 4MHz where the Z80 standard runs at 2.5MHz.

I'd be replacing those ugly sockets first

They could be a part of the issue for sure!
