My mom just took her citizenship test last week and thank God she passed. She took her oath ceremony the next day and my family and I were in tears because it took about 18 years to finally reach this point. She had been studying for over a year just for the test.
exactly! as someone who has had to go through the process of getting visas many times, it definitely isn't an easy process, even if it's just a visitor's visa. there's so much paperwork and other things that some people don't even think of that are involved in the process.
Ciubiin Cisu Do u want to tell me y my own country would kill millions of it’s own ppl? Do u think we’re sadists? When I was visiting Israel tho, I recall everyone there believing that 9/11 was something us Americans came up with to pin on them. Their 1 or 2 radio channels they got, both spewed that message to the ppl. But here’s the thing, what if it’s them and I’m going to take a guess here, u, who r the ones receiving the deceptive news? We and the rest of the world believe 9/11 was carried out by terrorists. No, we didn’t pay them. No, we weren’t in contact. Why would the entire rest of the world believe that except Israel?
At the end of the day, i bet 89% of the people trying to get into the country are working hard in school, home life, social life, and work life, then you. Hands down.
Ashley ASHLEYM did you even watch the video? They said she likely wouldn't of been able to visit. And Ned's a good person who doesn't want to abandon his abuelita.
This needs to be taught in American schools. American kids need to grow up knowing how lucky they are to be here as legal citizens. And they need to have compassion on people who are trying the best they can to make a better life for them and their families.
Ugh... No. We all need to understand civics and basic knowledge of how our government works, which IS taught in schools. People just don't pay attention. We don't need ridiculous propaganda designed to brainwash students into believing that we need to make immigration easier. Our immigration system is one of the most generous in the world, not even Canada is as generous. So yeah, no.
@@Bookworm51485 Nobody said we should give out everything. And actually alot of americans do take for granted the freedoms and oppurtunities they have. Women have the right to speak their mind own houses and drive cars. You can speak your mind and even vote on your leaders. You have access to clean water and a free education up to college. So to say alot of americans dont take what they have for granted isnt true.
@@Alex-ko4vh You clearly don't pay attention if you'd say that 'nobody' says that. That's far from the truth. And, no, most Americans DON'T take what they have for granted. That's the basis of patriotism. We fully recognize what we have in living where we live. That's where the love for country comes from. Just because it doesn't take the form that you think it should doesn't mean that any of what we have is taken for granted.
As someone who immigrated to the US and is a US citizen now, I plan on becoming an immgration attorney so I can help out other immigrants. 2 semesters and I'll be done with my bachelor's degree and I'll begin preparing for the LSAT. I can't wait :)
My parents both immigrated to America 31 and 19 years ago and they are still trying to get citizenship Edit: I made this comment 1-2 years ago, and I can say they are officially citizens. They became citizens last year, thank you to everyone who hoped for them ^^
BeaveHolio keep in mind that some people don’t even HAVE a country where they are the majority. My parents are kurdish, who don’t have a country of their own, and they were discriminated in an Arab majority country. Not only do some people not have a country, they might be in a time of war or poverty and migrating is their only choice to freedom. Open your eyes to the world and understand the suffering of other people, not just yourself.
My dad has always said "I'll be there next year" for 11 years. My siblings and I cry when we talk on the phone with him. He tells us about his difficulties and even though he laughs it off, I know he's desperate....It's sad how so many families are broken because of this sht
This made me cry. I'm so sorry that your family has to go through that. It's not fair that a country that began with immigrants is so against immigrants. I'll keep you guys in my thoughts.
Lexi lopez the us does not appose immigration it apposes people living in the country who aren't paying while the system can be beuracratic at times the answer is not open the border besides this I hope that OP's grandfather does make it into the United States.
Dragoncat Sage illegal immigrants pay, they pay with getting the least payed jobs, payed with the stereotype of being terrible people, having to endure racism especially those of Mexico and Muslim backgrounds, they pay in leaving their family far away but cant go back bc the journey to america was hard enough, they pay in the food they eat bc they can only afford the cheapest things, they pay in their culture bc they have to try to learn some english, they have to pay in healthcare due to illegal mexicans working fields that can cause them cancer and tumors that they cant afford to go to the hospital bc then theyd be sent back, they pay in housing by having to live in the worst living conditions, they pay in clothing since they cant afford to get good clothes, they pay in having constant pain, yes they may not all pay taxes, but when they do they do, they try to learn english, have a nice house, have food, but its hard bc theyre not allowed even a job in a gas station or a mcdonalds bc they have no papers
Sebastian Ortiz-trejo I'm not saying that these struggles are not sad I am saying that there's a point where instead of blaming the us for Spanish speaking immigrants problems that instead maybe some of the blame goes to the ineffective leadership and systems of the countries these people are fleeing from.
God , i'm not even an immigrant or a us citizen ( i'm from Canada) and just listening to these stories and seeing just how hard it is to actually immigrate and get citizenship , actually makes me want to cry .. These poor families that are just asking for a safe place to live and raise their children .. :(
Right, and I suppose you can tell who is innocent and pure just by looking at them and believing what they tell you huh? The fucked up people in said countries, is why its so hard for the innocent to get here in the first place.
Canada has a long wait list and difficult immigration system too. I'm Canadian and a child of an immigrant who was only allowed to come due to a deficit of workers in that field during the 80's causing recruitment in the UK. Now this parent would no longer qualify for this job with education requirements. Canada has to protect the infrastructure, economy, which includes jobs, social security, our healthcare system etc. or there would be nothing. Sadly we already have huge healthcare and education debts, safety and security concerns, high unemployment for young in their fields of study due to delayed retirement.
Canadas immigration system is not only harder, but uses a merit based point system. Its one of the absolute hardest countries to immigrate to. I tried to enter Canada first and I realized really quickly I was never getting in so I redirected my resources to immigrating to America. If you actually research different immigration systems you quickly find out America has a very very lax immigration system and is the best option for legal immigration. Especially if you have little education and money. Canada wouldn't have taken in any of these people except the girl from Iran, and even then it would depend what time of year they applied for refuge because Canada takes only a certain amount of humanitarian immigrants each year.
lol and it's so much harder for people to immigrate to Canada than it is the US.......you feel sorry for them? lol the hypocrisy or maybe it's the ignorance.
I’m a born and raised American, and honestly I didn’t know a lot of this stuff went on. I apologize to all the hardships many of you have gone through to be able to be free here. Hopefully one day this country I’m so lucky to call my home will change its ways and be free for everyone.
You're delusional if you think America would survive "being free for everyone". The welfare system would immediately be overwhelmed and all government services would collapse, the demographic change would be fast and collapse the country leading to immediate civil war.
Unfortunately these people are what I term "pathologically altruistic". They are guided by their feelings, and their feeling is fear, and it is being manipulated by fake news. They really think they are doing a good thing, not realizing that if there was no boarder then the demographics of America would be irreparably changed and so many people would be on welfare that the whole system would collapse and society would be driven into a civil war. The irony is the civil war would be VERY diverse at that point. @@Natalie37854
Watching this video brings tears to my eyes. Because my parents sacrificed so much to bring us to the U.S. legally and it took me a lot of time, effort, and paper work to become a citizen. 15 years or longer from the moment my parents apply to when I got my citizenship at 21. I also hear the comments why don't people just come legally? but it is not easy. I am touched and proud that this video was created to shed some light on this issue.
CMDR Beamee I would like so say I don't work 9-11 hrs a day. But i work 12 hrs in a hospital. Not an easy life but we must try our best to make those who sacrife for us proud.
CMDR Baemee You seem to be a bit obsessed with this breaking into homes to steal stuff. I'd suggest you bring your theft-related issues to a place where support can be found instead of using youtube comment sections to vent your anger. And do know you are not alone, there are more people like you right here: www.kleptomaniacsanonymous.com/testimonials.htm
Random Guy ideally that would be the best. Please try to talk to someone people that have come here illegally and listen to their reasons. Maybe you would understand more, maybe not agree but understand why they do what they do.
April Buining it is not necessarily that they don't have a life or a future but that it is hard to accomplish anything if you don't have the resources to. Not impossible but very hard.
Being racist is discriminating against a race. I'm pretty sure American isn't a race. Also, stereotyping isn't even considered racism. Take a joke or leave.
This makes me understand why people cross illegally like Keith’s character who dont have a high school diploma and just want a better life for their family
literally their chances are very slim and struggling in their home country for who knows how long. was it the right way to immigrate? no it's not, but for these folks they don't have much choice. not only that but they leave a lot behind, like their old life, family and friends that they most likely won't see again unless they get deported. the system is difficult and indiffrent to these people's personal struggles, no one is 100% guranteed in it's all on luck and favor. the way it sets up leaves many to choose what keith hypotheticlly chose.
@@ghostlyhousehorrors yeah duh we care about our own people's safety. our government should be centered around the us citizens, not around illegal immigrants
@@linda-pw2qv yeah, but the way it's set up, for the people that do enter, won't "if they take your job", they will take it. Most migrant workers don't come to take all them lavish jobs, they come scrapping the bottom of the barrel. You're not out there doing back breaking work for near zero pay. But are at a comfy job, that someone, whom by US standard, is good enough to take it. Which in reality has turned into, better than the average citizen, since there is a huge gap in prepared workers here in the US. Then instead of being prepared to fight for it, we go blame those scrapping the bottom for the lack of work... Which no one truly is knocking down the doors to get into anyway.... But yeah, let's focus on keeping people out for our overall lack of focus, instead of making sure our citizens are indeed being better prepared since we have everything at our disposal.
LivingKV yet well over a million people legally immigrate to America every year, far more than any other country on Earth. The ones that come here illegally are making it harder for everyone else. America is the leading immigrant destination on Earth but that’s not good enough, people want millions more to come over illegally and outside the system, including criminals, terrorists, sex traffickers, slaves, and drug cartels. And somehow working to prevent illegal aliens from entering while the front door remains open is seen as fascist? Even as other countries aggressively police their own immigration, including Mexico. Hypocritical bullshit. I’d like to see any other country handle the immigration problems we have and not descend into civil war.
you're misinformed. illegal immigrants make it very hard for others to come in, and still, we have more immigrants come in than any other country. blind sheep..
"the most un-American thing is trying to block people out who are doing the most American thing, working hard to have a better life" the sad truth that so many people never even think about
scooch - mod being an American citizen is not privilege. The United States government has no obligation to take in immigrants. Come the legal way or be deported.
If we have the right to buy a health insurance, car insurance, life insurance, why we can not 'buy' constitution 'insurance;? Let the states fight for us/our taxes. Just like the companies fight for the customers. Wouldn't be wonderful that paying 'taxes' is like paying premiums. We pay to receive a service, if the service does not satisfy our needs or if our needs change, we can shop for a diff.constitution that will protect us. (taken from dr. Johan Galtung)
We as a nation were built on immigrants, I think we've become very Un-American and not very much for "freedom" at all.

Sebastian Ortiz-trejo Key word, "made". Last i checked our country is fully developed and mass immigration isn't needed as it was hundreds of years ago.
The end gave me chills. Much appreciated. (This is coming from me, someone who has no interest in going to the United States.) it’s really heartwarming to see such a humane, enlightening video about an actually important topics that is affecting the lives of millions of people. Thank you, buzzfeed and the employees who work there.
As someone who's parents are immigrants I'd like to say that I appreciate this video! It's heart warming to see you guys make a video concerning this situation and helping open the eyes of others! Thank you!
Its amazing how keith just straight up decides to come in illegally thinking about his family like many immigrants who just want the best for their families
This video made me cry hysterically because people in other countries just want a life and most of them will never get that opportunity. We are all humans and we need to work together to make better lives for everyone.
I think it means history doesn't repeat exactly like how it was back in the days, but something similar is happening. Like you get the same two candies but with different wrappers.
Agreed. And it goes back even further than the US and Catholicism. If you look throughout history, it's a rotating wheel of which Judeo-Christian religion is on top while the rest are being persecuted. We've been dancing this dance for literally centuries. It's a shame we haven't learned anything yet. Religion isn't the issue. It's assholes in charge who use religion to be dicks.
@Hitler var en god mand Because it indicates that the immigrant is less then and so if they get a job they're wasting space and "taking a job away from a perfectly good American" and yet we're all immigrants unless we're Native American.
@Hitler var en god mand Because once they come to America, they live their. It's their home, they bring their culture, so how is it the people who work hard for what they have aren't considered American enough to just have a job. They can't just have a job they have to be "taking an America's job". Well, aren't they American?
@@purpleeyeshadow9560 It wouldn’t be racism, Xenophobic definitely because it’s fucked up but an American could be black or white so it’s not a problem with race (I know the countries they stop coming in are most not white) it’s more about the nationality of that person or where they are coming from. Am I making sense? Your not wrong in your outrage just want to help strength your argument.
I help tutor adults who have got their greencard and are learning us history and civics to become a citizen and its fascinating learing about all of their cultures from cuba to butan. its absolutely heartwarming watching them come back to night class and telling us they have an interview date or they passed the n-400
Malisa R After the election, I wanted to do something for the good of our country so I researched citizenship classes in my city. It's more of an organization than an agency. They welcome new helpers coming in and I would encourage you to do it!
Born in TN, this is one of the reasons I was homeschooled. 🤣 I took 13 years of world history, US history, state history, political science, and world geography before I got to college, then much of the same in college. I’m very thankful for that, because it’s shocking how little they actually teach in public schools.
RoLo LoLo yes, I live in the UK. But it's still very difficult to get into Europe if you don't have an EU passport. I don't think I'll ever understand the world.
Spring Rose Actually UK has relatively strict immigration laws(at least compared to the other rich EU countries), I mean Italy, Greece and Sweden. As for America, it was bad luck, since extremists did 911, bombing and some Latinos where drug dealers, everything got ruined for them.
Generally these types of “educational videos” give very general, obvious information and I don’t learn much OR they’re about something irrelevant/unimportant. I actually learned a lot from this, and it’s current. 👏👏👏
"History doesn't repeat itself but it often rhymes." Thank you for making such an interesting and informative video. Though I'm an immigrant and have grown up knowing a bit of this, watching this video in light of all that's been changing during this administration is eye-opening.
MyAnacondaDoes yeah right, my father died waiting for citizenship, but why should that be a problem for anyone else? There are people dying just to live a proper life but it doesn't matter as long as they're not white. "Immigration is hard, as it should be." It should be hard, not impossible.
I fail to see how posting a controversial video is creating awareness. If anything else, this video merely affirms people's exaggerated beliefs. There are two sides to every story. The ONLY side they've shown here is a sob story. That's just fantastic, inviting a teenager on stage to act out their script.
We had to do this in school about a year ago because my classmates mom became a citizen. We all failed except for the classmate bc he helped her study for years
They mention the filing fees for a green card they didn't mention the doctors fees for the medical check (for everything from STDS to TB) that's assuming you can find an approved doctor anywhere near where you live oh plus the fee for biometrics (getting photos taken, finger prints etc) which may involve a days trip to the nearest capital city if you don't live in one. .
Also the process of people just immigrating and those immigrating for refugee status are totally different. The refugee one is very hard to pass because if they find that anyone in your family even distantly is related to someone in ISIS or any organization that the US finds threatening they'll deny you. The background checks for that process take about 3 years. That's why I laugh when people think we're just letting refugees in like opening the front door to the mail man it's not quite that simple.
They probably didn't mention those fees because it is entirely sensible to not let someone in who has certain diseases. This was a propaganda piece, not an actual discussion of the immigration problem.
Well yes, it is sensible but even if you are completely clean you still have to find an approved doctor (very hard) and still pay for the check-up that will confirm everything you already know which is bound to be very expensive and assuming that you do have a disease you have to pay to fix it (once again very hard) before trying to go to the US. Over all a lot of time and money blown on someone that you are not even sure you can find all to go to a country where you can get stuff like TB and STD and cancer and such a6 any time for free practically do you understand now?
You forgot to say how the medical is not in any way covered by insurance so you pay the whole fee out of pocket... I was lucky to find the most understanding doctor who told me to go to cvs for a few of my vaccines, since it was cheaper/covered there. I did have to argue with their mandatory flu shot outside of the USCIS listed flu season but ended up getting it...
The fact the last scenario had no legal way to apply made me so sad :^( so many people are here risking being deported back just to send money back to their homes and in the process end up being poor themselves
The US military will pay for a GED so he can get into the military. He then can serve for a year, then apply for citizenship, which will be granted. He would have to serve at least three years active duty or 6 in the national guard. He then has access to all benifits any other servicemember has. GI bill, federal tuition assistance, ect. The biggest hurdle is that he must get permanent resident status.
OspreyKnight, under the Trump administration, anything is possible. They've been deporting veterans who aren't citizens, so joining the military is not a guarantee. www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-deported-vets-20170604-story.html
+OspreyKnight Who in their right mind would join the military just to get a chance at living life in US? You might get yourself killed or worse, have a traumatic brain injury and be brainless for the rest of your life. As it stands right now, it's better to just go as an illegal or otherwise just forget about this at all.
Rewatching this because I got a phone calls from a distressed friend yesterday. She’s here on a student visa as a grad student and her mentor/boss/person-who-lets-her-stay essentially kicked her out. So now she’s got less than a week to find a new graduate professor that would take her or she’ll lose her visa. I didn’t realize it was so cut throat; you’ve a job or your out. There’s no waiting period for looking for a new job. How the heck are you supposed to account for another persons decisions with no heads up?
Melissa thank you for asking! She did, in a different field. So she’ll be able to continue to get her Ph.D, but now in biology instead of engineering. She has said that her new mentor is the friendliest and she feels much more comfortable there then she did with her old one.
I got lucky with my green card I was young enough that i was under my mother's umbrella but my older sister aged out so now I am watching my sister go through all these hoops even though we've been in the states for almost all our lives it's really hard.
As a young teenage immigrant people seem to dismiss the fact that I went through some messed up things to be able to live in a free country. And the fact that so many people that are going through messed up things are being denied a life and a future and their right to just... be free. Is insane and disgusting if I’m truly being honest.
Abi Van I see where your coming from but we can’t just let everyone in, think of it as your house when you first got your house you invited everyone in then you went into another room and when you come out your house is trashed and you come to the realization that not everyone likes your house my point that I’m getting at here is that we can’t just let everyone in because if you look at Europe for example that let’s immigrants in by the masses they have had more terrorist attacks then any other country in the world
@@Roaring20twentys I'm pretty sure everyone doesn't want in, just the people who are hoping to and willing to work to make things better for themselves and their families. "I'm gonna come here without papers and just send money back to my family until they find me." That's the story for a lot of "illegal" immigrants. It's the only way their families will be okay.

Eleanor Harrison lmaoo. What race am I racist against by labeling illegal aliens as criminals, which they are? Lol please privileged huwite Karen. Go on and explain A BANGLADESHI IMMIGRANT HERE, which race did I target?
Eleanor Harrison actually it does Asian Karen. Illegal aliens is the LEGAL TERM ON PAPER. Don’t try to use euphemism by changing historic terms which has been legally used for over a century. I don’t care what anybody’s situation is. That doesn’t give them the right to break our immigration laws without being properly vetted. When I came here, my mom and I had to be extensively vetted for two years and living separately from my dad. We waited patiently respecting the laws. They made sure we weren’t criminals, terrorists, drug dealers, or coming here to leech off tax payers. They made sure we would respect the law of the land. What part of that don’t you understand? Other members waited 10-30 years to do everything the right way. Fk outta here with your holier than thou attitude. Why cant these countries help themselves instead of feeling entitled to come to America to leech off the system? Why don't you ask Harvard and all the elite colleges to also give everybody else a chance at an elite education in their institution? Wouldn't that be more compassionate? Why should there ever be a requirement to enter their colleges just like you want to do away with requirements to come to the USA?
I had an Albanian friend in Germany, whose family lived in the US. She had a medical degree from Albania and was 1) On the way to get her diploma recognized in Germany, 2) Attending Master of Science program with me and 3) Studying German extensively. When applying for a tourist visa in order to attend her sister's wedding in the US though she got a rejection and was told: "You have more reasons to remain in the USA and work illegally rather than going back to Germany, completing your degree and being a doctor there"?!?!?! Sometimes the USA is way too arrogant..
CT Studios Even then, there are some pretty screwed up things about the immigration system. Like the fact that for people immigrating from India, the projection date for getting a Green Card is about 100 years from now. So chances are that those people won’t become citizens.
CT Studios well if American citizens can’t even pass the test, that is a pretty key part of getting into the country, does that mean they are wrong people?
im a daughter of immigrant parents and i knew they scarified a lot to come over the US but i never understood how much. watching this video made me realize how lucky i am to be born in the US, and i feel ashamed that i havent been working even harder to repay my parents for their sacrifice. thank you for making this video, this really opened my eyes
9:23 "What about abuelita?" As an Asian (Canadian) the feels... my grandma and other relatives probably aren't getting over here and my ama is already quite old...
Sorry to hear this :( people see videos like this and think america is the only nation where immigration is an almost impossible process that breaks up families. It’s not and we should work to resolve immigration issues in all these countries. The USA, uk, canada, etc.
Same here, but remember ama has lived in her own country her own life. She will probably never adjust to a strange country with a language she does not speak.
We say Ama or Ami too! I completely agree. My cousin only got to spend two days with her husband after their marriage. He's a Canadian citizen and she was supposed to get her marital visa but now they have to wait 2 years to get it so that they can meet again.
+Michaela Jimenez - I'm not following. Cheating the system? You mean entering the illegally? I immigrated legally and those who migrate illegally weren't in line with me. That said, as the world is currently set up, America doesn't have to accept everyone. It's just a bit hypocritical to have a population with this narrative from the Statue of Liberty that they don't uphold. America used to turn back 'paupers and invalids' in the 19th and 20th Century with the ships they came on because Americans didn't want to be stuck with charity cases. Ships then had to cover the cost of bringing them back to the place they came from, so most ships started being selective about who they brought and not just concerned whether they had money for the crossing. The equivalent to lacking a high school diploma was being an unskilled pauper, so it's not like America ever did take just anyone. They still don't take people with disabilities.
That's why I often look up to my mom because if it wasn't for her, I wouldn't be an American and I wouldn't have all these opportunities waiting for me in the future
Blue Bandit did you even watch the video.....? 16 minutes of explaining that some people don’t even have the option to BEGIN the path to citizenship and you’re down here in the comments spouting judgement. What’s the point? Why are you bothering? Do you really feel so threatened at the idea that somebody might have sympathy for those less fortunate than yourself?
I cried at the end because it has happen to me my mom worked so hard so we can live in America legally she paid a lot of money to continue the process but the immigration said that we had to go back. There is not a day that I don’t think about America and I cry every night whenever I think of it the 1 and a half year that I lived there was the best year I had ever lived in my life. I love America and whenever I’m there I just feel happy. I miss America. I’m so proud of it because it brings me joy, security and more😭 HAPPY NEW YEAR
Honey Boo boo Hi. I just lived in the US for 3 years (im a teen) and have now moved back to my home country, Denmark. Not a day goes by where I don’t think about America or about my best friends that I miss more than anything. I am dreaming of moving to the US when i grow up, and can only hope of a change so that it is easier for people to move to the US and to become citizens legally.
I started crying during this video 😭 I recently became a citizen last year and it was all thanks to my mom. They never told me any of the things that they were going through. My aunt was the one that petitioned my parents, grandparents and her siblings. I’ve never been so thankful for her
But why? No one has the right to be a citizen of any country. It's not their right to be a US citizen, it's already far too easy to become a citizen, if you don't get through, you don't get through, it's not my country, it's not their country. If they don't want certain people becoming a citizen that's their prerogative. The US isn't for the world, it's for the people who are citizens. I know I wouldn't want anyone to view my country as that. SO I give Americans the same respect by not complaining about how easy it is to become a citizen because it's not easy enough.
All these type comments make me want to cry. It's like, I really want/ need that house so badly... But I can't afford it, I can't get a job to buy it because I can't afford child care... It will take us 10-20 years at this rate to be able to afford it... But every year our kids get more and more expensive... So basically we'll never afford it. You know what, screw that, I'm going to steal it! Breaking the law is breaking the law. Good intentions don't make the act right. Instead of breaking the law, why don't the millions of people band together in their own country and make it a better place? They certainly have enough courage to do so. Be the voice of change and in doing so, make the world a better place.
NO WAIT NED THE GRANDMA COULDVE MARRIED EDUARDO AND THEN BROUGHT YOU TO LA CAUSE YOURE HER CHILD AND YOU BRING YOUR CHILDREN AND THEN SHE DIVORCES EDUARDO BUT YOU HOP ON IT AND MARRY EDUARDO RIGHT AFTER
I will admit that even though this video had its funny moments, it is awfully sad knowing that people that want to live better lives, and live in general, want to go to a country that is so hard to get into. And even if it isn’t hard, there are personal sacrifices that can be made or it will take a long time. I started to tear up when it said that “No viable path to citizenship” was the most common story. My grandparents immigrated to America, but they lived in a small country and my grandma is Danish, so she was seen as privileged. They had a hard time immigrating to America, but it was nothing compared to these stories. I just wish that at some point in the near future that immigrating to America will be much easier and less heartbreaking. I just want people to be happy and live happy lives, and knowing that it is either hard or impossible makes me disappointed that our country says things like “everyone can be free” or “we accept all people” when we still haven’t figured this out!
I completely feel this. I'm from Venezuela (one of the countries on travel ban) and I moved to the US 4 years ago on a student visa. But no matter how hard all of my family worked, there was just no way to get even a working permit; my mom even had to go through college again (having graduated from an university years ago) to be able to get a diploma and hopefully work. But it didn't work. And with no way to gain money and survive in US we were forced to move to Europe where maybe we'll have a better chance at life. And its sad because you see professional workers from venezuela (lawyers, medics, architects) having to work as waiters, gardeners, auto-repairs, etc just to be able to survive...
i feel very sad for you and your family. it really saddens me that other people are taking advantage of the system (the illegal immigrants) and taking the places of people who actually need to come in to escape persecution. a lot of people are milking the system, believe it or not, and it isn’t fair to people like you and my aunt who came in legally
@@katiemiller6594 Thanks for the sentiments... But sadly, there's not much to be done about it. Hopefully, in the future, the system will improve and allow those who need it to be able to become citizens more easily
One important thing they forgot to mention. It is not rare to have people not go to college or even finish highschool. A lot of people don't even have the chance to go to school.
Talha Khalil yeah, like how most of them aren't paying taxes? It even say in this video that out of approximately 8 million undocumented immigrants that are working, less than half of them are paying taxes. LESS THAN HALF!! I have no problem with people coming to the US to better their lives, but if you come you need to contribute.
The undocumented need a pathway to obtain a Social Security Card and a status, which gives them freedom to walk out of the shadows and pay taxes. The immigration system in this country is broken and these people who came have just come for a new chance of life.
Well I'm surprised even 3mill are paying taxes. How would they pay it without documentation? They're not even getting any benefit out of paying. Like here in Canada I wouldn't expect illegals to pay income tax since they can't actually access the services that our taxes go into (ex.healthcare, social security).
This proves how ridiculous most of the questions that are the us citizenship test. Most Americans don't even know most of the questions either so how would people from another country know?
If americans doesnt know them I cant.imagine people from other countries know them Seems to bloody hard Try ask politicians or people whp designed these questions I bet lots of americans wouldnt answer
Katarzynamaria Muszynska The questions that they were failing to answer in the video are easy questions and I knew the answers to all of them. If anyone knows the BASIC history of the U.S. then they would be able to answer these questions. Americans don’t know these questions because the school system either doesn’t teach us enough U.S. history or teaches it wrong. Like Keith said in the video: he said that the Tennessee school system just teaches the history of Tennessee and that’s pretty much useless. I’m not from Tennessee but my schools did pretty much the same thing. You learn about the history of your state and little pieces of the rest of U.S. history.
I watched this video and my Vovó called me right afterward by some weird twist of fate. I was crying incoherently about how lucky we are that we were born here and how deeply sad it is that I have relatives on Saõ Miguel that I'll never get to meet, and she just sat there and told me stories about my bisavô's process immigrating with his family, and that they changed his name so it would sound more American (It's been lost, we don't even know what it was before Curt) and we just sat and cried together. I do hope immigration gets easier in America, because its absolutely horrible that families are split up like this.
@@lululipes4382 No Sao Miguel is part of the country (the largest island out of 9) called "the Acores", it is a Portuguese island on the East of the Atlantic Ocean, not too far from Portugal which the Acores belongs to as a territory.
@@MsBhappy I have no idea why, but I know for my family they can't see us simply because they're just too poor to fly, like it's really that simple. But we go see them when we can, as it is expensive so it's not a yearly thing. I don't know why OP doesn't just go see them, sounds like laziness on her/his part imo.
I am from Venezuela and I feel so ashamed to be on that list of blocked countries...Only God knows how hard it is to survive here. And yes I mean survive. We are not only fighting corruption, we are fighting the one thing that can truly kill a human being: hunger and despair. Hopefully once we hit the bottom we will react and learn from our past. "History doesn´t repeat itself but it often rhymes" #calmaycordura #unionpazytrabajo #sinprisaperosinpausa
you could like a european country tho, like.....the usa isnt everything.....like the president there right now is pretty controversial to say the least.....
(sorry for my english, but i hope you'll understand) Tottally agree. I live in Ukraine, and though it's european country you have no other choice but fight for your live. Because of the corruption and war with Russia about 90% of people are poor and broke. Because of the prices and taxes (even if you have a decent job) you give all your money to those fat bureaucrats and you're left with about 20-50$ for a whole months. Even if you have a good education it does not guarantee you having a job by your specialty. For example, my mom has 3 diplomas (medical, economical and in management) and she is making up wires for cars. I hope that in the future rules for comming to America wouldn't be so strict.
Yet you have access to the internet and are able to post comments on videos. You're suffering from hunger and despair? You're finding it difficult to survive? Why are you on youtube watching controversial videos? Corruption? What a nice place to put all your blame on.
I would like to go on a tangent and say that this is why it pisses me off when people don't take education seriously. Not the people who struggle with it due to the nature of their home situation, but the ones who are like "it's boring, we're never gonna use it, I hate it and I'm going to blow it off even though I have the ability to fully utilize it." Yes, the American education system is highly flawed. No, that does not mean it is completely worthless. The privilege of free education is something that is too often underrated.
This video made me very grateful for everything I have now, super glad so many people are becoming more and more aware of the current situations in our country.
I'm so thankful that my mom, my dad, my brother, and me were able to get into the United States safe and sound. In all my 15 years years of having been alive, 9 of which I spent in the US, I have never felt such a pang in my heart thinking about how much people like me have suffered because of these harsh immigration rules. Thank you, Buzzfeed and Try Guys for unveiling and or reminding this very pressing issue to me and to many others.
This video made me sick and cry. I know people who are trying to get their green card. I even had someone offer me $15,000 to marry them so he could get a green card because it was cheaper than continuing to pay an attorney. The hoops people have to jump through is disgusting and makes me disgusted with my country
As an Australian this is very enlightening. No matter where you're from, when you're in a crisis situation immigration should NEVER be this difficult. In our country we are mostly focusing on freeing Manus island and the refugees trapped there, but I feel deeply for each and every person drawn into and then left in these twisted laws. We can do better, and we SHOULD do better. A tick of a box shouldn't decide whether or not you survive the next year in a country that has more than enough resources to support you. I'm so sorry for everyone that has to struggle against such a broken and clearly manipulated system. You deserve so much more and we won't stop fighting for it until you receive the access and respect you all deserve.

This is so true. I think many americans take for granted the oppurtunities they have.
No one takes anything for granted, it doesn't mean we think it should be handed out willynilly to any and everybody.

Dude, do some research on your own immigration system.
lol and it's so much harder for people to immigrate to Canada than it is the US.......you feel sorry for them? lol the hypocrisy or maybe it's the ignorance.

I also hear the comments why don't people just come legally? but it is not easy. I am touched and proud that this video was created to shed some light on this issue.

Linda Yun But immigration has played such a big role on this country.......
That's right, Lighting McQueen.
I hope this shows people who say "why dont they just become citizens" like if its an easy thing to do.

It is easy. You join the U.S armed forces then you get U.S citizenship.

Gea Arce I don't get it, could someone please explain that phrase to me?
I think it means history doesn't repeat exactly like how it was back in the days, but something similar is happening. Like you get the same two candies but with different wrappers.
For example: Back then it was Catholics who were the problem, now it's Muslims.
That's not a "repetition" but a very similar scenario, so it "rhymes"
good one," two candies but with different wrappers."

"Not taking a job away from a American worker-"
Eugene:😑😡 Upset over racism
Zach: Disappointed pikachu face.
@Hitler var en god mand
Because it indicates that the immigrant is less then and so if they get a job they're wasting space and "taking a job away from a perfectly good American" and yet we're all immigrants unless we're Native American.
@Hitler var en god mand
Because once they come to America, they live their. It's their home, they bring their culture, so how is it the people who work hard for what they have aren't considered American enough to just have a job. They can't just have a job they have to be "taking an America's job". Well, aren't they American?
@Godess Of Beauty
I never said don't asjust, it's only natural to adjust to a new environment, but "taking a job away from a American" is racist.

Lexi Rogers lmao same with Texas
Yeah I live in Texas, and don’t remember a thing they taught us
y'all got it easy with the history of your state, I was taught Virginia history and ooohhh man there's a lot of history to learn
Born in TN, this is one of the reasons I was homeschooled. 🤣 I took 13 years of world history, US history, state history, political science, and world geography before I got to college, then much of the same in college. I’m very thankful for that, because it’s shocking how little they actually teach in public schools.
I live in Arizona, and we get taught American history. Thanks non southern teachers!
I don't understand why a country built by immigrants has made it so difficult to be one...
Spring Rose This is my favorite comment ever!!
Have you seen EU countries with practically no immigration control?
RoLo LoLo yes, I live in the UK. But it's still very difficult to get into Europe if you don't have an EU passport. I don't think I'll ever understand the world.
Spring Rose Actually UK has relatively strict immigration laws(at least compared to the other rich EU countries), I mean Italy, Greece and Sweden. As for America, it was bad luck, since extremists did 911, bombing and some Latinos where drug dealers, everything got ruined for them.
Neither do most Americans
Generally these types of “educational videos” give very general, obvious information and I don’t learn much OR they’re about something irrelevant/unimportant. I actually learned a lot from this, and it’s current. 👏👏👏
You learned about abuelita that’s what matters
"History doesn't repeat itself but it often rhymes." Thank you for making such an interesting and informative video. Though I'm an immigrant and have grown up knowing a bit of this, watching this video in light of all that's been changing during this administration is eye-opening.
14:55 Keith got so serious it really shook me to the core I swear to God I teared up
I'm glad that BuzzFeed put this out. They're creating awareness. Thank you for this.

Justice
Awareness for what? That immigration is hard, as it should be.
We all failed except for the classmate bc he helped her study for years
They mention the filing fees for a green card they didn't mention the doctors fees for the medical check (for everything from STDS to TB) that's assuming you can find an approved doctor anywhere near where you live oh plus the fee for biometrics (getting photos taken, finger prints etc) which may involve a days trip to the nearest capital city if you don't live in one. .
I had to travel to London every time. $450 $500 every time just so I could be here with my wife.
WRONG! Joining the military wont get you citizenship. Heck, they will kick you out IMMEDIATE after you left the military.
OspreyKnight, under the Trump administration, anything is possible. They've been deporting veterans who aren't citizens, so joining the military is not a guarantee. www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-deported-vets-20170604-story.html
OspreyKnight that’s not even true. Joining the military WON’T grant you citizenship/benefits
+OspreyKnight Who in their right mind would join the military just to get a chance at living life in US? You might get yourself killed or worse, have a traumatic brain injury and be brainless for the rest of your life. As it stands right now, it's better to just go as an illegal or otherwise just forget about this at all.
They need to show this in schools
As a middle school teacher, I would love to show this in my class but I can't because of the swearing.
Did she find another job?
Melissa thank you for asking! She did, in a different field. So she’ll be able to continue to get her Ph.D, but now in biology instead of engineering. She has said that her new mentor is the friendliest and she feels much more comfortable there then she did with her old one.

As a young teenage immigrant people seem to dismiss the fact that I went through some messed up things to be able to live in a free country. And the fact that so many people that are going through messed up things are being denied a life and a future and their right to just... be free. Is insane and disgusting if I’m truly being honest.
Abi Van I see where your coming from but we can’t just let everyone in, think of it as your house when you first got your house you invited everyone in then you went into another room and when you come out your house is trashed and you come to the realization that not everyone likes your house my point that I’m getting at here is that we can’t just let everyone in because if you look at Europe for example that let’s immigrants in by the masses they have had more terrorist attacks then any other country in the world
Mistor J Europe isn’t a country...
@@Roaring20twentys "they have had more terrorist attacks then any other country in the world". More than Iran, Iraq, or Syria?

*More efficient, cost-effective application processes
*Flexibility on immigrants per anum

"I'm gonna come here without papers and just send money back to my family until they find me." That's the story for a lot of "illegal" immigrants. It's the only way their families will be okay.

Eleanor Harrison Iol your point is ignoring USA immigration laws, citizens safety, and American sovereignty. Fk your point.
You’re not virtuous because you’re sticking up for criminals that disregard our sovereignty. You’re just a virtue signaler that’s ignorant of the issue.

Why cant these countries help themselves instead of feeling entitled to come to America to leech off the system?
Why don't you ask Harvard and all the elite colleges to also give everybody else a chance at an elite education in their institution? Wouldn't that be more compassionate? CT Studios but it’s also a bit of a lottery and that’s not good also sometimes it can be biased
Same
CT Studios Even then, there are some pretty screwed up things about the immigration system. Like the fact that for people immigrating from India, the projection date for getting a Green Card is about 100 years from now. So chances are that those people won’t become citizens.
CT Studios well if American citizens can’t even pass the test, that is a pretty key part of getting into the country, does that mean they are wrong people?

well just to be a legal immigrant is ridiculously anxiety promoting, and hard.

Honey Boo boo Hi. I just lived in the US for 3 years (im a teen) and have now moved back to my home country, Denmark. Not a day goes by where I don’t think about America or about my best friends that I miss more than anything. I started crying during this video 😭 I recently became a citizen last year and it was all thanks to my mom. They never told me any of the things that they were going through. My aunt was the one that petitioned my parents, grandparents and her siblings. I’ve never been so thankful for her
11:01 unfortunately that's the last resort of some families 😔
Ashley ASHLEYM it is not easy
Ashley ASHLEYM but it isnt easy 🤔🤔 were you even watching the video??? Its YEARS or decades, life is only so many years long
All these type comments make me want to cry.

Aww those girls are so beautiful and seemingly sweet, I’m so proud of them.

Like here in Canada I wouldn't expect illegals to pay income tax since they can't actually access the services that our taxes go into (ex.healthcare, social security).
iampetz Finally, someone that knows what they're talking about.
Why would they pay taxes when they're not even legally there? They get no benefit from it.
This proves how ridiculous most of the questions that are the us citizenship test. Most Americans don't even know most of the questions either so how would people from another country know?
Your special M3melord The questions on the citizenship test should be common knowledge, most Americans don’t know them because our school system sucks
If americans doesnt know them
I cant.imagine people from other countries know them
Seems to bloody hard
Try ask politicians or people whp designed these questions
I bet lots of americans wouldnt answer
Katarzynamaria Muszynska The questions that they were failing to answer in the video are easy questions and I knew the answers to all of them. If anyone knows the BASIC history of the U.S. then they would be able to answer these questions. Americans don’t know these questions because the school system either doesn’t teach us enough U.S. history or teaches it wrong. Like Keith said in the video: he said that the Tennessee school system just teaches the history of Tennessee and that’s pretty much useless. I’m not from Tennessee but my schools did pretty much the same thing. You learn about the history of your state and little pieces of the rest of U.S. history.
JustAnother EdgyTeen exactly.
The funny thing is that most foreigners know more about our country than we do. Ignorance comes with the privilege.
I watched this video and my Vovó called me right afterward by some weird twist of fate. I do hope immigration gets easier in America, because its absolutely horrible that families are split up like this.
Why will you never be able to meet your relatives? Portugal isn't in a travel ban

But we go see them when we can, as it is expensive so it's not a yearly thing. I don't know why OP doesn't just go see them, sounds like laziness on her/his part imo.

delipoo oops my bad. That's about right.
I am from Venezuela and I feel so ashamed to be on that list of blocked countries...Only God knows how hard it is to survive here. And yes I mean survive. We are not only fighting corruption, we are fighting the one thing that can truly kill a human being: hunger and despair.
Hopefully once we hit the bottom we will react and learn from our past.

you could like a european country tho, like.....the usa isnt everything.....like the president there right now is pretty controversial to say the least.....
Canada will always be a good choice.
camila carrizales canada and germany i believe really encourage people from outside so try applying there
(sorry for my english, but i hope you'll understand)
Tottally agree.
*I was always proud of my mom for going through this process, but now more than ever!*
The reality is even tougher than this video tried to show us...
“ i like freedom, rap music and cowboy boots. am i america now ? “

This video made me very grateful for everything I have now, super glad so many people are becoming more and more aware of the current situations in our country.
Why is this causing me so much stress and guilt?
