    "Your bass cab is basically a high pass filter" - I had never thought of that. What a fantastic analogy! Great video, as always!

      The funny thing is that if you add a HPF before hitting your cab, most speakers will perform even better

      Thanks for watching! Which interface do you want to get?

    • @JarodGrieco
      @JarodGrieco 4 года назад +1

      @@IvanBassist yo! I'm considering going the affordable route with the interface - maybe the Scarlet gen 3 or the SSL 2+
      At first I thought I'd be able to do some small EQing in garage band and that'd be it, but the more I think about it I think it would be best to purchase logic. Seems like the stock plugins are worth it.
      I'm curious about the video portion of this process now. Maybe I could suggest that as a future video for you! I.e. once I've got the audio sounding nice, how can I line it up with my video? If it's just one camera angle, no effects or editing, is iMovie sufficient?

    • @IvanBassist
      @IvanBassist  4 года назад +1

      Yes, you can just use iMovie. It’s easier if you either pop or slap a note before the backing track starts to generate a clear transient that is picked by the camera and your recording. Then you have a clear visual guide to sync both files

    Just wanted to say I really like your videos Ivan! They've taught me a lot, especially about production, and they're top notch in quality. But one thing I'd like to ask is about pre-amps and cab sims. In previous videos you've talked about how they shape the sound of a track. Is it fair to say they effectively are like EQ presets? Since you said something like a cab sim will cut out certain frequencies above and below a certain point as compared to a sterile DI signal. And if that's true, can you recreate the sound of a pre-amp and cab sim just by using an EQ-plug in?

    • @samuelvenditti4161
      @samuelvenditti4161 4 года назад +1

      I forgot to mention using a compressor with the EQ as well!

    • @IvanBassist
      @IvanBassist  4 года назад

      Thank you, Samuel! I’m glad the videos are helping 🙌🏽
      Yes, you could definitely say that using a different cabinet or cab sim is like using an “eq-preset”. They definitely change the tone right away.
      In theory, you could recreate the tone of a cab using a fully parametric EQ plugin, but it will probably take A LOT of work, because cabinet have different bumps or dips in different frequencies and that is not counting the microphone that you would put in front of the cab, which also changes the tone

    Ivan, you can find the separate audio tracks (among many-many others) of this song on the following website. You can actually re-mix the entire song with those files:
    remixpacks.ru/?s=symphony+of+destruction
    I've done many remixes, of songs that I like and I have removed the bass entirely so I can play my own bass :). Actually I learnt a lot by re-mixing all those songs and I was shocked to see that there are tons of songs where the bass sounds "normal" oreven "pleasant" when you hear the song in its entirety but the isolated bass sound is a horrible distorted sound. Goes to show the lengths at which sound engineers need to go to in order to make the bass guitar really audible.
    You're going to have to register on Yandex disc service but for the purposes of exploring and downloading stem audio files you can definitely remain at the free level.
    As I understand it, those files have been salvaged from "Guitar Hero" type games. Plenty of Nirvana, a few Smashing Pumpkins, some Alice In Chains (the best ones actually), some Iron Maiden and TONS of Metallica stuff, among many-many others. Enjoy :)

      @IvanBassist  4 года назад

      Great! Thanks for the info 🙌🏽 I’ve listened to a couple of those isolated tracks on RUclips and it is indeed funny to hear how the actual bass tone sounds like on it own 😂

    Again, this was great. Question about the limiter: I thought I understood a limiter to be one of the two functions of a compressor. I thought a compressor squashes the signal (reduction) and then applies make up gain to get that signal back to where it was volume-wise...so this would make the quiet notes louder and the loud notes more quiet, right? My understanding of a limiter was that it's only making the loud notes quieter where a hard limiter would just say "anything over x threshold gets reduced to where the threshold is set."
    I guess my question is, is the limiter used in this video more like a compressor? What's the difference between a limiter and compressor? Thanks dude!

    • @IvanBassist
      @IvanBassist  4 года назад

      Yes, a limiter squashes anything above its threshold. In this case, the threshold is 0dB and we are using the gain to make things louder. If anything happens to cross 0db, it gets compressed and released extremely fast to avoid clipping
