Dude! I think I have told you before. Those were one of my favorites as a kid in the 70(s). The old formula one kits and just the race car kits in general. Just now some of those are real expensive. But I think I still have a 1/12 Porsche race car kit in the basement from my youth I can build at some point. But, build what you enjoy. This hobby needs to be fun and a stress release 😀

FullMoonStudio I agree. I wish Tamiya would start re-releasing their F1 kits in 1/12 scale. I suspect many of our same/similar generation now have the money to actually buy these kits. I used to dream of buying one when I was a kid but I will not pay a collector price for one.

Those type of instructions with the hints and the highlighted areas where glue needs to be and a little information about the actual part on the real thing are by far the best and I don’t know if anyone does anything like that anymore, building model cars as a kid is where I learned to identity engine parts and that’s very helpful really

Great tips on here have seen me enlarge my tiny AirFix collection to one that will take years to complete and after drinking a few beers and watching the " St Louis " posts on the weekend I thought it was time I gave myself a challenge, even though I barely know how to use a airbrush. It is a very diverse and rich hobby but these particular models do offer great detailing and upgrading opportunities if that is where you want to go. Nice one Harry! Got one of these I built over a decade ago when I returned to modelling after a long break - was never happy with the decals (i didn't even know about decal setting liquids!) and the front uprights are as fragile as. I recently ordered new decals and front suspension parts for a revisit. I love Tamiya F1 cars (but I am unashamedly a Tamiya fan boy) and have a 1/12 Martini Brabham BT44B in the stash and a 1/12 Williams FW14B (also built over a decade ago) about to be restored having sourced replacement decals. "Apples" vs "Tangerines"... love it! My wish-list is currently 36 kits long, of which 4 just are "Apples" and just 6 are "Tangerines"; and my stash currently contains 3 "Apples" and 1 "Tangerine".. To me my choice of any model is all a matter of the *subject* (what subject interests me *today* ), and who does the "best" (more on that in a second) version of that particular subject. My *personal* criteria for what makes a good kit is: 1) how well it fits together (puttying and sanding are my far my most hated modelling tasks), and 2) the level of accuracy and detail available; in that order of priority. But that's just me. ;-)

Have done a few of the cheap (old) Tamiya armour kits which were OK. Fancied doing a motorbike and Tamiya is the obvious choice. Goes together well and the end result will be very good but I have to say it isn't as enjoyable as the 1/72nd Airfix Spit that I am also doing. The bike kit you can paint most of it on the sprue and then assemble it.

    • @HarryHoudiniModels

I built several Tamiya Formula 1 kits (1/20 scale) years ago (and still have a couple on the shelf) and they were challenging kits. Getting everything to fit just right was part of the satisfaction of the kits -- and they looked great too, I don't recall painting as much of a challenge compared to assembly. I might just have to pull a couple of them out and give them a go. Sub assemblies was definitely the name of the game when putting them together. They were a nice change of pace from 1/700 ships and 1/48 or 1/72 aircraft. Far more challenging than 1/35 armor (regardless of who made them)

These kits also aren’t like the tanks and will need some work as they didn’t fall together. F1 cars certainly start the race in immaculate condition - remember that amongst other things they are an advertising platform, companies pay vast amounts to have their brands on the cars - maybe not such an issue in the 50s and 60s. Then there is performance, the engineers want to eek every ounce of speed and dirt slows a car down so they will start the race immaculately clean and polished to make the car as slippery as possible in the airstream. Was watching some of the Dutch Grand Prix qualifying races yesterday and I noticed some footage in the pit areas between attempts where the crew were cleaning and polishing the cars with the drivers still sat in them. I guess as the race progresses they will accumulate dirt. So you have two choices, an immaculately clean ‘pre race’ car or a mildly weathered ‘post race’ car.

    Hi Harry,
If you haven't built it yet, I think that, among cars, you would enjoy the 1930 4.5L Bentley 1/12 from Airfix, a beautiful engine with brass and copper piping (I added a lot of real metal parts).
I don't know any paint that really looks like mirror polished brass, like a yellow chrome, if somebody knows one, I would like to know (I tried Alclad Gold, and it looks like gold paint unlike their chrome that is realistic).
I have this Honda kit in the (long, delayed) process of salvation from the previous modeler. The thing about the 12th scale is that Tamiya picked models that are not really exciting to me: Porsche 910, Ford Lola, ... What about a Porsche 917, Ferrari 250 GTO, or 250 Testa Rossa, instead? The F1 are cool though.
Always nice to watch your videos. Thank you, Yves.

I have the Airfix Bentley.. picked it up as a big box of jumbled parts, with no guarantee it was a complete kit. Took me an afternoon to go through the parts and instructions until I found I did have a full kit in the box, plus about 80% spare parts! I use “Dark Star” Brass for my ships. It’s the best looking acrylic brass I have found. Works nicely over a gloss black primer.

Back in '76 I bought a newly-released 1/12 Tamiya Porsche 934. It was recently released as a 45th anniversary model, and still holds up VERY well, with the addition of a small amount of PE.

good morning or afternoon depends on where you live ? LOL first I enjoy watching what you do and even though I have been building models since I was really really young and 67 years old and still enjoying building models , but I watched your build on the Tamiya 1/12 scale F1 Honda and I just had to go out and buy one for myself to build , but I have built other Formula One cars from Tamiya and I think their kits are absolutely awesome , you just need a little bit of patience and take your time and it's well worth it in the end but I like the challenge and the detail that Tamiya kits offer even with their aircraft models such as the F4-U Corsair and even the Mitsubishi zero are really nice builds , but I am curious to know how your car came out ? Because I cannot find the video on how you painted yours ? I know you made a suggestion instead of using the decals that you are actually going to paint the stripe on the model itself ? I know personally I try to do that on my models when I build instead of using decals I find it's a lot easier , but either way thank you so much and let me know if you have done that video on painting your F1 Honda and how came out ? Take care have a wonderful day from Charlie

I am curious to see how you are going to do yours ? But once again thank you so much for getting back to me

There is only one manufacturer of plastic kits that annoy me (I understand that every company will have an issue with fit or accuracy, blah, blah, blah), and that is Revell. Those BOXES. Open from the side, try and check the model in the shop or even and home, and then you have to go and do a physics degree and then a masters, and then a degree in engineering, to try and get the sprues back in the damn box, which has surreptitiously shrunk and changed shape. Hate them, hate them, hate them. (I now put Revell kits in the boxes of old kits, cutting the box and sticking it to the donor box.)

A tip on the tyres - rotate them GENTLY on some fine sandpaper - gives the surface a dull matt 'slightly used' look.
