  • Its been a wild and woolly January up here in the north of Sweden!
From record snow falls, frozen water wells and overflowing sewage systems!
To put it mildly one had little time for model building up here.
But I did manage in the last few weeks to paint up the parts for the chassis and assemble it together which is what I show here on this video...hope you enjoy...cheers!

Hi just found you finding your way of doing things good you’re helping out so thank you. Just something you might want to try next time you’re painting seat inside of the seat and other holes is paint them as wet as you can and then just spray the outside area. I use to paint cars for a living and that’s how I dealt with areas like that.

Hi Mark. It looks like the RE20 is progressing well. I had a similar problem with getting the top part of the chassis to sit down flush with the lower half and eliminate the gap. I ended up covering the gap with a very thin strip of styrene sheet painted yellow to match the chassis colour. I also took a sanding stick to the rivet heads on the upper chassis behind the driver just to expose a bit of white primer. From the photos I have seen these rivet heads were clearly a lighter colour, probably aluminium, and not black like the chassis sides.
    Cheers,
    Dave.

Hi David...thanks for the comments. The big issue with the chassis fit for me was around the front area that connects with the front suspension box...took quite a bit of sanding to get that to marry. Like you pointed out, yellow should be painted on that top edge of the chassis...but I have reference pics of that still bare aluminium on the car so decided to leave. As for the rivets...yeah, I had big ideas for that. Early on I did try to make my own but couldn't get what I wanted. Tried hand painting them....forget it!! Looked into buying some after market rivets but the cost was way to much for me, there were just to many...in hindsight maybe just a small metel rod cut and inserted into drilled holes would of worked. But I must say your idea is a classic KISS solution!!
But would of been nice if Tamiya made a bunch of rivits on there photo-etch sheet that you could glue on...cheers Mark

Nice job! are you scraping the paint off the glue points of the already painted parts?
    Thank you

Hello JYUG23...yes for plastic glue you do need to scrape paint off for a good bond...if I use super glue then its generally not necessary. Hope that helps...cheers Mark

For alu: Use Tamiya TS-17 alu spray.

Hi allnie...I do have a jar of LP-70 Gloss Aluminum but have yet to use at this stage. Don't know how similar it is to TS 17 but I tend to avoid de-canting if possible (to messy for me). But I do love the look of Xtreme Metal paints...very similar to Alclad but much easier to get here in Europe. The only thing I will do different next time is to apply AKs Gauzy after painting AKs metal paints.
After all this painting of the RE 20, I will say I am getting a better handle on using the Xtreme paints. I was spraying a little thin on application to be honest...but now a bit more brave in my application and now apply a good coat. (unlike Alclad)
      cheers mark
