British Smarties are the OG M&Ms. Americans came over in WW2 had never seen any candy like them and they were really popular with the soilders. When they went back one of them became the founder of M&Ms to fill that gap in the market

The DAIM chocolate and toffee bar was originally named the DIME bar in the United Kingdom. It was renamed in 2005 from DIME bar to DAIM bar. The name was changed in the UK to come in line with the rest of Europe where it was always DAIM, only in the UK and Ireland was it named DIME bar. There is also another DAIM bar made by Cadbury's that is called Milka Daim Bar. Cold drinks taste better because (counter-intuitively) you're tasting less of the flavour. Your taste buds are temperature-sensitive and chilling a drink reduces their sensitivity and results in a muting of strong sweet, acerbic, or bitter flavours. Also, as a result of chilling, the molecules in the drink are moving around less and so fewer of the molecules responsible for the flavour make contact with the taste buds. The same applies for scent, btw, which is why bread fresh out of the oven smells more strongly than it does the next day and why fresh, wet manure smells less strongly than old, dry manure; fewer of the molecules responsible for scent have the energy necessary to aerosolise and make it to the receptors in the nasal cavity.
As for the glass vs. plastic thing, that's pretty easy to explain too. Glass is chemically inert - the drink and the glass don't chemically react with one another at all, no matter how long its in the bottle. The same cannot be said of plastic, which does chemically react with the drink inside (especially if its acidic, which almost always is the case - especially for soft drinks) altering the taste as polymers from the plastic leech into the drink.

Smarties came before M&Ms. Hell, M&M's even lost a patent for a tube shaped pack because it was pointed out Smarties did that long before them. Admittedly as a kid in Canada (where the majority of them are made) they often were treated as the cheaper alternative to M&Ms. But I find they are an interesting alternative since the coating plays a more important role with Smarties as it is thicker, more prominent and creates more variety of flavour than a pack of M&Ms. I had my favourite order of colours for Smarties, but never noticed any difference for M&Ms. Once upon a time (before I was born) the different coloured shells even had different flavours of chocolate within, but that's long gone.
