Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

I've tried that before. I hit 20,000 miles per hour and a you just turn into a mass of piston. It's just a dome that is a piston not singular. It literally looks like something out of a marvel movie and you just start with violently flying around and every once in a while you see the island for like a millisecond but if you blink you miss it. It is kind of terrifying. I've gone under the water and came back out in a non underwater seat and then I have gone through the earth. Orbiting around came back from inside the earth through a cliffside. So yeah that's how that goes. It's terrifying. Do not do not try it. Just just know it is it is no no no no no no
Put a pin at the end of the pistons and connected it to the ground

@@moonstone0999 hitting the sound barrier from a stop in 1/5 of a second would generate about 170g. Which would flatten any human like a pancake. Think a 150 pound person basically weighing as much as a school bus, in about the time it takes to blink.
Scrapman, you actually pointed out WHY your top speed was constantly limited to ~600😂... the pistons can't take the tensile strain of accelerating that much mass that quickly, they keep breaking before the full contraction/extension can be completed. You should try doubling up the pistons by running a second row side by side to increase their strength and ability to withstand the strain and I genuinely think you'll see your increase in top speed🙂 good video though, really interesting and original 🧡

You only need to double it at the front. Maybe tripple it, like pyramid structure, where you need a wider base to handle all the weight from above.
It will not help. Doubling the pistons will double mass, and therefore total force on the pistons. There should be more pistons at the base. It should be built like a whip - thic at the base, thin at the end.
Further analysis is needed for the concept.

24:11 I went to a g-force calculation website, and it says that if you went from 0 KPH to 500 KPH in .2 seconds, you would hit 70.81 Gs, and that looks pretty accurate honestly.

From “experience” I have found that if you build a tower of pistons going up to the top of the build bubble, then place an armored seat, and configure the pistons to be at maximum speed and 0.00 start position, when you exit the builder it goes crazy and if any of the pistons touches a separate object (example: someone else’s vehicle) it will either rip it apart violently or do little damage.

You only have pistons in series, but not in parallel. Have a sandwich made from two rows of blocks with pistons in-between, and add more pairs of pistons-blocks layers on top, so they can share the load.

How do you feel you are the bottom comment
What you need to do is have a gradient of speeds so it doesn’t tear itself apart. You want the seat to be like a wave propagating. The seat needs to be in a state of constant acceleration at the crest of that wave. Think of a slinky. When you hold it by one in and let go, the top accelerates toward the bottom but the bottom remains stationary, because the bottom doesn’t “know that the tension has been released until the information wave reaches it. You can also think of it as a long train trying to stop itself with brakes on every car versus the lead car slamming on the brakes and every subsequent car slamming in to the one ahead of it in a quickly accelerating wave of crashing propagating toward the rear of the train.

2 ideas for horizontal contraction: 1. Try less pistons. A lot break immediately and may just be excess weight. 2. See if adding a pair of wheels to the seat helps or hurts. Possibly 1 or 2 pairs along the chain to counteract friction.

I think your contraption is breaking because the pistons closer to the base have a progressively heavier payload to accelerate than the ones closer the the seat, which in turn increases the stress on said pistons. It's PROBABLY doable, but you'd have to spend quite some time troubleshooting the breakpoint closest to the seat, and individually adjust and retest piston speed on each breakpoint to account for the increased part stress. Either that, or introducing a slight delay to each piston next-in-line from the seat.
Also, the pistons closer to the middle are experiencing a pulling force from either side(Base and payload) at the time of contraction, which could also explain the structural failure.
If you were to redo it(Which I highly doubt you will, and understandably so), I'd imagine you could(If the complexity points allow for it), reduce stress on each piston by doing it in smaller phases of 5~10 pistons, with a sensor which only triggers a phase upon near-completion of the previous one. That way you could in theory reduce the stress on parts by using the payload's own inertia from each phase of acceleration. Yet, that would pose another problem. Since the payload's speed tends to increase, the timing on each phase would be incrementally smaller, or else you'd be limited by the speed of each phase individually, for the seat would accelerate quicker than the contraction speed and therefore just smash into the next phase rather than be pulled by it. Which would, then, bring me to the last proposition I'm willing to think of right now: Build such phases not with a fixed amount of pistons each, but rather increasing the amount of pistons on each phase down the line to account for that.
Also yes, I do realize I have too much free time on my hands.

Because sound is the propagation of waves through a material based on it's density/elasticity etc, this piston chain has a speed of sound which is different from the speed of sound of air. Likely lke you said 600kph is about the speed of piston sound. These "contracting"waves in a material, or vibrations in a crystal which resemble sound in air are called "phonons"
There must be an option that the devs add that prevents the parts from breaking and disconnecting from each other

I think the reason you achieved supersonic speeds when you didn't scrap the tower was caused by a rubber band effect. The pistons retracted, putting tension on the tower, and when that tension reached a point where it caused the tower to break, the sudden lack of resistance allowed the seat to accelerate, unreliablely, beyond the speed the of sound.
