  • “Breathing. We do it automatically, but that doesn’t mean it’s automatically efficient.”
On the latest episode of the Oxygen Advantage® podcast, Patrick is joined by General Practitioner and Breathing Therapist, Dr. Louise Oliver.
Having worked with women going through the menopause and contraception for over 20 years, Dr. Oliver is the perfect guest to talk about women’s breathing, the perimenopause and the menopause.
For over 20 years Dr. Oliver has been working with women on contraception and HRT. It was during this time that Dr. Oliver experimented with using breathing for pain relief. During this time, she had a profound moment. When working with one patent, she used breathing exercises to put her into an incredibly relaxed state but when she tried that with other patients, doing the same thing made them feel much worse.
This was when she realized how breathing can affect people differently and decided to train as a breathing practitioner. In doing so she found that the missing link was carbon dioxide sensitivity. It was then that she realized there was a whole spectrum of breathing that needed to be considered.
She has since set up her own breathing practice alongside her GP practice and has used this experience to train other doctors to look at people’s breathing as an indicator of other symptoms.
Anyone interested in the effects of menopause, the way symptoms can be mitigated with breathing therapy, and the medical professionals are should listen to this podcast.

I’ve been doing the breathing exercises for about 4 weeks and my blood pressure has reduced significantly and my palpitations which I’ve been having daily for 2 years have disappeared altogether, it’s amazing 😊 one thing I’ve noticed this last week is a slight cough with a bit of mucus I’m wondering if it’s congestion coming off my lungs due to the breathing or maybe just a normal virus but I’ve not had a runny nose, this technique is amazing and so glad I found this channel 🙏

It can really be a great help @brendaharris3528,
You'll get an even bigger benefit if you combine it with practicing functional breathing exercises during the day.

      Hi @@happy_kathy4911,
We advise our own MyoTape (www.myotape.com) as it was specifically designed by Patrick McKeown for nose breathing.
It is designed to use elastic tension to keep the lips sealed safely at night while still allowing for talking or coughing if required.

      Hi @meddreamer4573
Learning function breathing techniques will be a benefit to you.
We usually advise anyone with breathing issues to start with the breathe light exercise as it is a great way to start training your breathing to experience air hunger safely. ruclips.net/video/CdPpV32cM0I/видео.html
If you have major issues we would advise consulting with a breathing instructor near you to make sure you are guided in the right way.

There are also a full suite of exercises can be learned for free on the OA breathing app. Though for best results, work in consultation with a breathing instructor.

Fascinating. This really aligns with how my breathing changed as I’ve gotten older. However, my question is if one develops sleep apnea in perimenopause would they still need to use the CPAP machine even if using your techniques?
