Annual March for King Charles I, 30/01/1649
The Annual March which commemorates Charles I martyred on 30 January 1649, unfolds with historical significance. On that fateful day, Charles I faced execution on a scaffold outside the Banqueting House on Whitehall.
For over five decades, every last Sunday in January, dedicated volunteers from the King’s Army, a Royalist faction within the English Civil War Society, have paid tribute to this event. These volunteers, integral members of the King’s Army, engaged in re-enactments, reliving the conflicts between King Charles I and Parliament from 1642-1649. Despite Charles' tragic defeat, trial, and subsequent execution, the soldiers continue to honor his memory.
The commemorative activities commence on the Mall, following a funeral order, the procession moves down the Mall and onto Horse Guards, tracing Charles' final journey. On Horse Guards, a solemn drumhead service takes place, a color is trooped and blessed, and the Oath of Loyalty is administered. Awards and commissions are presented, and a wreath, symbolizing remembrance of His Majestie’s tragic murder, circulates among the soldiers. The honor guard then escorts the wreath through Horse Guards Arch to the Banqueting House, where it is laid at the site of the horrid deed.
During these proceedings, the Army transitions from funeral attire to martial order before retracing their route back to St James’s Palace. Drums beat and colors fly as they return, with great shouts and acclamations to their King, boldly challenging rebels to face them in the year ahead.
