I have a English class and we were reading this story, this story is in the level of an 10 grader but I am only in 7th (the beginning). I have trouble reading it since the grammer is in a different form. So I decided to follow a read aloud, you helped me get through it so much easier. Thank you so much! Excellent reading by the way! :)
Hawthorne's story "The Ambitious Guest" is based upon a real-life tragedy that occurred to the Wiley family. The Wiley's lived in a valley in Crawford Notch, New Hampshire. On August 28, 1826, heavy rainfall and storms swept through the Crawford Notch area. Saturated by the heavy rain, the hills around the Wiley's home gave way. A landslide occurred, burying the valley and the Wiley's in their home. I remember reading this in high school-never realized it was based on a true incident...I thought it was a story of bitter irony...Well done reading!

I've never known that this story is based on a true one.
What caused the dissappearance of the family? How did they disappear?
