I think there are two kinds of luck. One is where some random dude hands you a million dollars. That's just pure blind luck. The second is learning how to compose music, write lyrics, and play a guitar; all to excellence, and then playing every day out on a street corner or park. Then some random music producer walks by and listens for a while and then offers to cut a demo for you. That's where you "make your own luck". So yeah I think Vans was lucky, but in the second way.

I just love how compared to other sneaker brands like adidas, nike or puma, they only have a few different types of shoes, being the slip ons, low tops, mid tops and high tops (probably forgot some) with all of them having such iconic silhouettes. They're timeless shoes that, in my opinion, are THE sneaker in terms of looks, and they go with so many different styles and outfits. Hell, you could probably wear them to a dress suit and still look good, and they come in so many different colourations and motives, theres probably no colour you cant find a pair of vans in.

I disagree that it was luck that propelled them to the mainstream. They created iconic high quality shoes that were popular among the California skating and surfing culture. If it wasn't Fast Times that made them explode, they still would've gone nation-wide, it just might have taken them a little longer. And there's a decent chance that some other movie would've eventually featured them, because they made such a bold fashion statement at time.

Tldr: The zeitgeist of the music scene is no longer rock music, it's hip hop. And festivles are expensive and declining sales won't cover it in the near future
Newer, younger generations (around 11 - 18) are not as interested in going to a rock festivle as our generation was. I remember when I was a kid and going to warped was a huge deal. Now I don't even hear anyone talk about it. Rap is in. Rock is out. Simple as that.

This video really only applies outside of California (southern california specifically), Vans here has never really noticeably fell or rose since i can remember. most types of classic vans (vans authentics, oldskools, sk8 his, etc) are pretty much default in everyones wardrobe for the past decades. Vans here arent a trend its more equivalent to a white t shirt, in southern california, vans are more in the wardrobe category that a pair of jeans and white t shirt reside in, most people have it, its not trendy, its timeless and you can just throw it on. people here dont vview it as a trend but more a just another classic piece of wardrobe that doesnt go out of style. But i can see how it would be wearing vans if youre from missouri or someshit then people would probably see u wearing vans as doing something thats foreign to the environment/ culture your in.

Vans and converse go through stages of ones more popular than the other. After working in a store selling both for around 6 years now, it’s been a solid year or so of constantly selling out of the old skool vans but both brands don’t completely fall off (except for their more out there shoes)

Last year, my school shoes were custom Vans hightops. They were galaxy with black interior, laces, eyelets, bottoms, sides, everything. The only thing that wasn't black was the stripes on the side and the back shield thingy. Those were black glitter. I loved and STILL love these shoes, they're so amazing.

In one section of shopping mall near me, most of the stores are shoe stores. Vans even has a store there. What is amazing is that every one of the other five shoe stores in that area of the mall also sells Vans shoes and most of those have prominent displays of Vans shoes at the entrance to the store.

  • @Nexfero

Even a few years ago, when I was still in grade school, Vans were a thing, but they weren't huge, but for some reason, starting late 2018 and booming in 19, Vans are literally everywhere. I even got a pair for myself this summer, since I started working at a Journeys. I still go to my school occasionally for various reasons and I would say at the very least half of all the kids wear Vans, and when they figured out I work at Journeys, they literally all swarmed around me asking for discounts and the latest styles and all that. Honestly, Vans are really good shoes. I bought my pair partially because I was skeptical of the hype, and they lived up to it.

I think something could be said for the effect Kanye & backpack/ hip hop culture had in the mid 2000's. Vans, has at every culture wave, had some organic representative of it's brand. The metal community held it in the 80's, the 90's had the skaters & in the 2000's Kanye surged forward with the idea that hip-hop could hold hands with skater culture & the urbanization of vans, came into full symbiosis. Vans has always had luck (Fast Times) but it's luck rooted in organic immersion in pop culture.
