I noticed the very similar front end design of the Leica Q lens and the Leica DG Summilux 15mm f1.7 Micro Four Thirds lens. Using a Lumix GX880 and GX80/GX85 I was able to get similar looking images to the Leica Q. I shot all cameras in RAW mode and applied mey Adobe Lightroom Leica presets to each sets of files, specifically Leica Q presets to the Q and Lumix G preset to the Lumix cameras (designed to give a Leica look). I had a Fuji X100T for a few years and took a lot of photos with it all over Europe. Fun camera, and with the Fuji film simulations I was very happy with the photos (still am). However, I sold it and bought a Leica Q. Probably one of the best cameras I’ve ever owned. I think the Q magic is in the incredible lens. Unfortunately I wasn’t happy shooting at 28mm all the time, so I gave up on the Q.
I compared my Q raw photos with my X100T ones in Capture One. The Q was clearly superior IMO. But that didn’t stop me taking some great shots with the Fuji - light, subject matter and composition being more important than lens quality at the end of the day.
Thanks Chris W!
Totally agree. My intro to Leica was via several "Pani-Leicas" which I still own. I also have several Fuji x series cams / lenses as well as the Leica Q. I've shot a few Fuji lenses that come very close to the Q lens, surprisingly close in fact ! However, the Leica build quality and it's "3D" effect wide open is unmatched. The excellent Fuji film simulations make it stand out from Leica, imo which is the main reason I choose it over the Q when I want the look of one of those simulations.
Thanks and thanks for sharing!
You've did it Matt! What A Guy!!!👍👍👍👍👍
Ha thanks Philip!
The GX880 was my first camera! And I still love it!
I love the size!
Yes, I managed to sneak it into a concert and got some brilliant portraits which the artist (a pretty big one too) then shared on his social media! It was worth buying for that alone @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
If you want to test more m4/3 gear then the Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1,4 Asph (version 1 or 2 not much difference) would be something to look into. And off course the Panasonic Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 ASPH.
Thanks! I dare not. I’ll lose even more subscribers haha but thanks. I know of the lenses.
I bought the DJI branded version of the Leica / Panasonic 15mm f1.7 lens back in 2023 for the bargain price of £120 due to it being relisted twice on Ebay because it wouldn't sell. I love the lens, and I msnaged to pick up a boxed, pristine and complete Lumix 880 body for £128 at a local / independent camrra shop ... A lovrly little kit to go with my other M43 lenes .. An absolute bargain.
Ah yes the DJI ones always list cheaper. Great prices you got
Good shot in the cost stream. Really valuable to the folks who cannot afford M, SL or Q.
Thanks Zoltan, yes that was my idea.
Yes, I have a Lumix GM1 and DJI 15mm 1.7. It's a fantastic combination. Great color in photos! The first time I saw this kit from Samuel StreetLife, it was called something like Leica Q2 mini. It's really an amazing combination. Thanks for the video!
Thanks! I looked at the GM1 too but later went for the GX880 as needed flip screen for video for RUclips.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I also put a manual classic Helios 44m-4 lens on a small old Lumix GF5 camera. This is also a very interesting combination)
@@nomimidzu8984 cool! I’ve tried various M, LTM and Nikon lenses
Great video. I have a slightly earlier version of the GX80, the GM1, with the Leica 15mm, and love it also. Great quality images, super compact and has a nice, albeit not luxe, build quality and feel of use. I can't compare it to either the Q nor the X100 as I've never used either, much less owned them, but in it itself, the GM1 is a very nice and super compact camera that produces very nice images.
Great! The GM1 became popular again a few years back. It’s the smallest option but you now pay a slight premium. I looked at it too!
The Panasonic-Leica DG Summilux 15mm f1.7 is a fantastic lens. Got one with my Panasonic GM5 and also used it on a GX7 and GX9
Thanks William, agreed!
Been a fan of Panasonic’s m43 gear since 2009 when I bought a GF1 and 20mm lens. My fav of the cameras is the GX8 from 2015, outfitted with everything from a crazy sharp Rokinon fisheye lens to a Leica (approved) 100-400mm zoom.
I’ve used Leica film rangefinders since I was a kid having a go with my dad’s M2 (when he was at work), but I didn’t get into sensor-based Leicas ‘til 2014 when I bought a used M8.2. Since then I’ve used Leica and Panasonic stuff in tandem.
Great David! I used to use the Lumix G1 with 20mm pancake :)
If you like a 50mm frame the Panny-Leica 25mm f/1.4 for MFT is small and amazing as well, and v2 is weather sealed
Thanks Jeff! I know of the lens, thanks. I tend to use 15mm & 45mm Oly for most things.
GX80 is a really underrated camera. Best mft sensor ever made imo! Only missing weather sealing for me.
Thanks! Yes I remember that you liked it too :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom That's right :-) Love the microcontrast and sharpness of that sensor. Very Leica-like!
Great video as always.
Thanks Chris K!
What comes to very close to Q is Fuji 18/1.4 in terms of angle of view, 3d pop etc. And is much lighter if you combine with a small xe4 with a handgrip
Thanks Mahesh, great tip!
Beautiful results with both setups Matt. I have a M43 setup with 4 Pana leica prime lenses including the 15mm and love them all. Perhaps the most magical of all for me is the 12mm f1.4 and I would love to see your reaction after using that. I still want a Leica Q one day though.
Thanks Richard, i'm glad you found this video. Yes the Q is nice for sure and if I get a chance to try the 12mm I will, thanks.
Interesting comparison. I'm an owner of both the fuji x100v and Leica Q. Would like information on using flash with the Leica Q. I have Godox/fFashpoint flashes including the non-camera specific Ad200, several fuji Godox flashes and triggers for off-camera flash. Also found four of the Pocket Wizard triggers. Expect only manual flash would work with the Q.
Thanks Donald, I’ll do a flash + Q video soon. Need to get more samples first. (Nikon fit Godox will work)
Fuji X100V is fabulous but expensive, but if it's a budget friendly compact comparison from Fuji, X-E4 or X-E3 with the 18mm F2 or 28mm F2.8
Great tip, thanks Steve!
Matt, Late to the party but thank you for this video. It inspired me to pick up a new Lumix GX85 since I already have the Leica 15mm f/1.7 lens. Now it's wait for the camera body to arrive. Price was right at US$365 new in the box, or should I say right for me.😎
Great! Yes the prices on these are crazy cheap vs Leica!
An excellent, pragmatic comparison. I recall that with the DJI version of the DG Leica 15mm there are a couple of differences: (1) the coating on the front of the DJI lens is different and can deteriorate, and (2) the DJI version is not updated for Lumix cameras.
Thanks Luke, yes correct about different coating (I tried to keep video short so left it out), and thanks about other factors. Didn’t know that.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom cheers Matt. Lens firmware updates are infrequent but there was one for the Leica version in March 2022 coinciding with the GH6’s release.
@@Democratiser great info, thanks Luke
Matt now that you are a 28mm fan (well, openly at least :) ), maybe you can compare to Ricoh GR some time? I had one for a while and it gave very sharp and contrasty pictures, nice b&w jpegs as well! Only camera I'm sad I sold... but on the flip side that makes space for a little Lumix, maybe one of these days, at least you make good points haha!
Thanks Thomas and yes re. GR if I ever get to test one.
Hi Matt, very cool, as usual if I may say. I might get a little bit further and try to experience the 15mm with a lumix GX7. Rather cheap, IBIS, viewfinder, excellent image quality. And I'll check out your presets.
Thanks! Yes these bodies all offer amazing value I think!
How can you afford all this gear?! Thanks for the wonderful information.
Thanks.. I buy older Leicas once price has dropped and used all my house deposit haha. Priorities and all that!
Another very enjoyable video! / Ulf
Thanks Ulf!
Brilliant. I've used Lukix ages ago w/ a Canon S120. Bloomberg Brilliant back t hen so I wouldn't mind trying a new model.
What is that red lanyard strap you used ? I love red & t will compliment my olive green Bellingham bag kit and other bits in that Leica red that pops
Thanks K, Erm i'm not sure about the strap as it came with my used Q. Check online as i've seen others with the nice red strap.
nice pair of ........ cameras❤
Haha thanks!
Hey Matt, awesome video again. I own many Lumix cameras and also own the 15mm f.1,7 which is a great lens. However, I also own the Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1.8 and I prefer the images from it over the 15mm. Curious what you'd think that lens. It's not a Leica branded lens and it has terrible autofocus (slow but accurate and no AFC) and manual focus is also poor, but optically it's an absolute gem.
Hey Gijs, I recognise your name from my preset sales! (Thanks!) I have the 20mm 1.8 too.. had it a long time since I had my GH5 for RUclips. Yes I should do a test at some point but it might be a step too far for this channel! (Most people want Leica here)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom very pleased with those presets and I totally understand how the 20mm Lumix might not fit well with your audience but happy to hear you've been using the lens. I've tested it against the Leica TL 23mm f/2.0. I should put those sample images online actually.
@@Mrgijs thanks and I’m glad you like the presets. I sent an email out but you might not have been on it as you bought recently. I’ll forward an email to you about a free preset :)
Haha that's exactly why I got the lens. To get the Leica q experience without the huge expense.
Ha great to hear you found it too! Nice :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom haha yup it's slim pickings for us 28mm zealots so any water that shows in the Sahara will be drank haha.
Thank you Matt, a really interesting video, but was watching from my Leica CL point of view. Can these type of Panasonic lenses be used on my Leica CL? Thank you!
Hi John, thanks! You can use Panasonic S Lenses (see next video) but not these M43 lenses as they are designed for a smaller sensor.
Great video. Ever consider doing something similar with the M11. I know it's not a fixed lens but is there something out there an order of magnitude cheaper that can compete with the M11?
Thanks, Yes I need to test the M11 at some point for the channel. Being 60MP I don't think much comes close as a cheap fixed alternative. The Q3 will be the closest but that wont be cheap either.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Whatever you decide to compare it to, I'm looking forward to the video. Really wish there was a "poor man's" M11!
Hi Matt, really nice video with a very nice practical approach. I like the little Lumix and Leica branded lens. Never bought it though. On your advice not to buy Olympus bodies: True, you don't get the nice clicky aperture ring, but if you combine the Olympus body with the Olympus 17mm f1.8 lens you get a very nice metal lens with a lovely manual focus clutch AND very good ibis. Since they use the same sensor as Panasonic you probably can give it the Leica look as well. (The aperture ring doesn't influence the look, right?)
Thanks! Yes I like the clutch design of the Olympus lenses but I think the 15mm wins optically. Just bigger too. I used 15mm on Olympus body in Spain. Yes it will not change final photos.
cool video ...When I bought the GM5 I look at the X100V but the main concern was the fix lens ....
and The Lumix had a Leica Lens :-)
Thanks Jerome! Yes you have the popular GM5!
GM5 and Fuji are with me in Rio right now. And tbh, I think the gm5 and 14 2.5 is the way to go here.
@@paullefko nice! Yes the 15mm isn’t the smallest lens is it.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Aahaha yes smallest is the 14mm 2.5 more versatille is the 12-32 3.5-5.6 but not really usable 🙂
@@jeromearnould9940 I have 2x 12-32. It’s great in bright light for travel.
Enjoy your insights, but where might I buy a Q for 2000? I live in Canada so with the exchange it would be $2400-2600
Sorry £2K so yes more in USD.. I got mine on eBay
By the way - have you ever worked with the Contax G series? Wonderful lenses.
Thanks, no i've not. I know AF shooters love them and they have great optics.
I love the 15mm f1.7 from Panasonic but I never found a compact Panasonic camera with a good view finder to use it. I use it with my g9 but it’s not a compact camera ( it s only a compact camera vs the Leica SL :)). I tried the gx80 but the viewfinder is ugly and for me not really usable.
Thanks, yes the GX80 VF is no match to the SL finder!
I picked A, the skin tone seemed nicer, marginal, just my taste though.
Leica JPEGs normally kick butt vs. most cameras but yes for RAW it’s less clear cut.
I didn't know the aperture ring was ignored on Olympus cameras. That's super annoying.
Yes it’s better on Pany cameras
Do you have a Leica preset for Sony a6400?
Hi sorry I’ve never used Sony cameras. You could apply any of my presets as a base edit to your files but you might need to fine tune colours as needed for the Sony sensor.
What Godox trigger do you use with your Leica Q? I went to B&H in NYC, and they recommended I use a Nikon-based trigger for my godox lights. It works ok, but it seems to make the EVF flicker and go haywire. Have you experienced this? Thanks for your videos! Cheers.
Interesting. Yes I use Nikon fit on all my various Leicas (see previous video) and no issues. Ask me again in a month as only just got the Q but so far so good. (XT16 trigger)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Apologies, I have a Q2 so maybe the settings are different. I've tried many different settings to try and get rid of the flashing of the EVF, but I can't figure it out. If you have any suggestions, I'd appreciate it. Best Wishes!
@@sck-nyc7511 try turning evf on only (no lcd). I’ll try a Q2 later this year so will look.

I've to admit the Leica Q is simply better here...
Yes, you’d hope do for the price difference
I love the 15mm f1.7 from Panasonic but I never found a compact Panasonic camera with a good view finder to use it. I use it with my g9 but it’s not a compact camera. I tried the gx80 but the viewfinder is ugly and for me not really usable.
G100?
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom i didn t know this camera (seems more vlog oriented than phography) but the viewfinder seems interesting. I will have a look.
GX80 viewfinder is a compromise designed to be as compact as possible in a small camera body. I have a GX80 and Leica Q2 and a Sony A7III and all I can say is that the Sony has the worst viewfinder for me, because its resolution is poor. However I can live with all of them, but the Leica’s is the best of this bunch.
@@hedydd2 I agree for the A7iii the view finder is not fantastic at all and not in line with the capabilities of the camera. As usual,Sony wants to protect his high level line keeping for it some of the best feature. With the view finder of the A7Riii the A7iii wwoukd have bring some shadow to his big brother. I don t like this policy. For instance the z7 got the same viewfinder and the z6 which is very good and far more superior to Sony. Olympus also is known not to « limit » too much the capabilities of his mid level line. It seems that the advise from Matt to check the g100 viewfinder is not bad. This camera qpwas for,me more a vlog camera that a camera for photography but after reading some tests they rather miss their target and it’s a medium vlog camera but a good camera for picture. As this camera didn t get a lot of success there are some, promotions ongoing around it… so,perhaps I will try :)
@Matt Osborne Hi again Matt, I look at some tests and it seems you were right. In fact even if this camera was more thought to vlog this part is not so good but the picture part seems interesting with the viewfinder of the g9 (which Îlove (my first m43 camera) , it s compact and quite nice and got all the capabilities except an ibis but I don t need it for 15mm m43. As this camera didn’t encounter a good success (again more by a bad marketing placement on vlog side) I could find one rather cheap. One last question : if you knew it, why didn’t you propose it in you mini Q configuration. It seems better build than the 880 and it gets a viewfinder which is important for a photographer. If I got one I could invite you in the south of France for some days if you want to make a test :) ? Does it sounds well to you ?
No, you can't compare two, because using the m4/3 sensor with the 15mm f1.7 you get 30mm f3.4 DOF equivalent. If you had shot Leica on f1.7 aperture, the difference would be very obvious. In fact, the photos you took as an example could have also been taken with any APS-C camera and an 18mm f2.8 lens.
I love m4/3 cameras and I use one daily, but they just don't compare to FF.
Thanks, I shared the photos from FF and M43 and the difference was less obvious than you may expect but yes agreed on paper it should be easy to see. I don't have my 18/2.8 any more but agree with you.
I'm so old school, I manual focus my autofocus lenses. They are crap. Lens assembly has loads of movement. Sort of a pc lens.
Swc with a pc conversion from Marty in nyc is another toy
Thanks Carlos! I do that too with my Nikon F lenses on older bodies :)
A
thanks Tom
the resolution of the camera and the lens is not worth 100 dollar!
Haha the lens is pretty sharp!
Matt, are you wrong?
MFT to FF must be 4x
15 mm MFT = 30 mm APS-C = 60 mm FF
Am I right ?
Apsc crop factor is roughly 1.4 depending on the brand
And mft is crop factor is 2
Thanks Vic! Yes Leica CL is 1.5x
No Jaco, in this case I think you might be wrong. As Vic says, it’s easy to calculate. FF=x1, APSC=x1.5(ish), MFT=x2. (For FL)
15mm f2 for example = 30mm f4
Haha, I chose the A, I thought it's Leica
Thanks Arthur! I guess I did ok then with Lumix!
Indeed, I am pretty impressed with the results
Why would you simulate a camera with another camera on the first place, just buy the one you like.
Second, how in the world can you compare two cameras where the SOOC shots are ruined by presets.
Do a proper test shooting a test chart and then make a comparison.
Go to e.g. Dustin Abbott and look how it's done.
Your normal lens tests are okay, besides your presets, but this is worthless, at least as a proper test IMO.
Thanks RS, I like testing cameras to see what I can get out of them. I test them for how I shoot which is RAW + preset. I think most pros shoot RAW but agree for some they use JPEGS.
If you shoot raw, then that file is meant to be post processed, so applying a film simulation filter preset is just a convenient way of doing so to get a consistent look for the end result.
Shooting jpeg means most of the processing is done by the camera, but it can still be optionally tweaked or even substantially processed in post.
@@hedydd2 Putting film simulation or any other filter on a RAW image is like putting Ketchup on a classy meal and then compare it to something other meal you put ketchup on
If you want to compare two cameras and/ or lenses you do that with no alteration of the RAW SOOC file. Just expose properly so you don't have to adjust exposure etc. and put the two next to each other . Everything you change will effect a clear compare.
If you are interested in good camera/lens test, go to e.g. Dustin Abbott
@@RS-Amsterdam
I agree with very little of the above. There’s no difference between using your own individual adjustments, which might be stored as a preset for further future use and which many be individually customised for a particular image, than using any commercially available preset.
The only reason for shooting raw is so that the maximum latitude can be achieved in post processing. Otherwise one might as well shoot jpeg and try and get it more ‘to taste’ in-camera.
@@hedydd2 thanks!
