    Got myself a secondhand Q in 2023. And woof! I was absolutely blown away by how amazing it is

  • @LeicaM82
    @LeicaM82 2 года назад +13

    I was fortunate to be an early Q owner. The camera is extremely capable, but I wound up back using M’s for two reasons: first, I prefer the OVF vs. even the excellent Q EVF, and when the 28/1.4 M lens was released, I saw even better image quality. I caution you not to do a side by side comparison with that lens for the sake of your pocketbook. As for selling the CL, keeping every camera you enjoy is a perilous path. Trust me, I know.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom

      Thanks! I know the 28/1.4 is better, one of my Patreons has it and mentioned it on one of our Zoom calls. OVF are very rewarding, I still enjoy Ms for that.

    The Q was my gateway camera into the Leica brand. I love it and I still use it quite often. I now use it in conjunction with two M cameras (that I use with a selection of fast M lenses) and it fits in nicely to cover the 28mm focal length. As you have said, it’s like having a really good 28mm lens with a very nice camera attached to it, although its macro capability and other features make the Q a lot more than that.
    The Q and the M system cameras are great for landscape and travel photography, which is what I use them for. The Q seems to be a really versatile camera, given that so many street and reportage photographers regard it as their ‘go-to’ camera that is perfect for their needs. Wedding photographers also love it for its low light capability and its ability to facilitate candid shots judging by your comments.
    I think my next camera will be the Q2M because I love monochrome and I am blown away by the image quality. That is some way off though

    Hi Matt I began with the Leica Q and seeing your videos I then bought the CL for longer lenses and a zoom for travel. I recommend you to keep the CL. Personally I love it with the 56mm from sigma. It s a pity Leica decided to stop it . I think it s really an underestimated camera and thx again to you for making me discover it.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  2 года назад

      Thanks Phil, no problem. Yes the CL is excellent. The Q will be used less but will be great for my wedding shoots where I want that shallow DOF low light look/ ability. CL wins for travel for sure.

  • @hmli2353
    @hmli2353 2 года назад +3

    Love the Q but still keeping my CL. The only “con” of the CL is the smaller sensor, but I can change lens. The 2 complement each other perfectly.
    And instead of buying a Q2 and crop in, when I want longer focal length, I just use the CL with Leica R mount 50mm, 90mm.
    That said, if I had the money, would I buy the Q2: heck yeah!
    Love your channel, keep up the great work!

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  2 года назад +1

      Thanks! I love that the CL and Q share the same batteries. My thoughts exactly.. use the CL for more reach/ travel and SL for shallow DOF shots less wide to match Q - wedding 2nd body etc.

    Sold my Q about 6 months ago. It IS an amazing camera. I kinda miss it. The image it produces are special, better than the CL imo. All down to the amazing lens. Although…I realised I hardly ever wanted to shoot 28mm, so sold the camera.
    Macro with a 28mm lens? I’m not sure…I never used it.
    Q with a 35 or 50 would be my all time dream camera.

    • @ChrisWhittenMusic

      The Q will go down as a classic. The lens is outstanding. If it was 35 or 50 I would keep mine. I didn’t find my Q auto focus much different to the CL. I just focus and recompose. Getting my SL today and hoping for Q type image quality. A 35 or 50 Q would be an instant buy for me. Maybe I’ll rebuy the Q one day. I took it to Finland, Mozambique and South Africa. Got amazing images from it, but even then struggled with the 28mm only factor.

It is fast compact light and I love shooting wide + the macro option is a bounce, BUT as you mentioned in the video such a great camera needs a newer faster computer with a better display which I don’t have and that slowdowns my work flow so much. I start copying the pictures go have food then come back to the computer to edit. I can’t downgrade to Q since I bought my Q2 new but I need to invest in a better computer. Now what surprises me the most is .... WHY DIDN'T YOU BUY A Q2 MONOCHROME , cause then you would experience real B/W photography .
    The Q2 MONO has more micro contrast cause there is no color filter array and due to that fact, is where that Summilux really shines cause that lens by itself is razor sharp !

      Lots of folk tape up the microphone holes on the top and back of the original Q to prevent dust getting in. Apparently the earlier Q models were quite prone to dust on the sensor. I really like using my Q for little video clips (despite everyone saying it's rubbish for this!) and stopped taping the ports up so I didn't miss the sound on the videos. My Q developed a weird delamination of the EVF recently so something to watch out for. Leica Mayfair repaired it very quickly and I thought very reasonably priced. Good luck with it, I love mine and couldn't be persuaded with a CL even through your excellent and informative videos 😁👍🏻

    Yes, yes, yes to autofocus. I had the A7M III out today with the SONY 24 - 240 zoom. Get the zoom right, press the button, done. Correctly exposed and focused, I can rip off a stream of photos if I wish and the color and image are good. Plus IBIS. Powerful arguments to stray from RFF cameras. I suppose I could play golf with a croquet mallet and make live standing up in a hammock, but I don't. I understand the move to a Q.

    I think Leica did something very smart with the Q/Q2 choosing to ship it with a fast 28mm lens. They probably did not sell that many fast 28mm M lenses anyway - mainly because 28mm is a horrible experience on modern day Leica M bodies with their default 0.72 viewfinder magnification. For people with glasses there is no way you can see the 28mm frame lines on an M (it's hard with 35mm already!). And let's be honest. It's older men who typically have the disposable income to purchase expensive Leica cameras to indulge in a luxury hobby. And older men tend to wear glasses. Me included.
    I got a used 28mm Elmarit for my M. I hardly use it. Because it's so difficult to frame. I would have to put on contact lenses for that setup.
    If I wanted a 28mm, I would go with a Q/Q2. It's a no-brainer.
    Matt, I've read a lot about the horrible green tint on the out of camera JPGs from the original Q. Did they fix that with firmware? Or is that still an issue?

The high resolution sensor allows me have multiple cropping options in case I need to crop in instead of having the 28mm field of view. To be honest, the 50mm field of view is more of my fav. Nice one Matt, good to see you’re keeping an open mind and are even prepared to ditch manual focus if it helps you do a better job.
    I’ve been thinking of switching to AF for events/weddings, but on Sony there are a couple of M-mount autofocus adapters e.g. Fotodiox Pro Pronto, which turn M lenses into AF lenses. One reviewer (Matt Grainger) said he was getting a 90% hit rate if memory serves. Using dumb adapters to M-mount one can also use the AF-adapter old film lenses from other brands and use them with autofocus as well.
    This will open up the world of vintage lenses using AF which will give a completely different look to the average wedding/events photographer.
    I’ve also been thinking of incorporating a smaller setup, but using the Sony A7c (also full-frame) and using it as a backup or even as a walkabout camera when travelling. It too can use the AF M-mount adapter.

    Your video is so timely for me. I'm deciding between a 28mm Summicron for my M10R or instead getting a Q and a 28mm Elmarit 2.8 as the prices are similar. The Leica Q would allow me to have a macro and low light capability while the small 28/2.8 would be a perfect compliment to the M10R for fast daylight outdoor street photography. You are making lean towards the latter option. I would not sell the CL at all. I originally sold a Q to trade for a CL and I didn't regret the decision. Now that I'm looking for a 28mm lens, having the 28mm summilux 1.7 with the digital body attached to it isn't a bad idea.

    My first Leica was a Q, bought in 2018. In 2017 I had bought a Fuji X100 F, but became progressively annoyed eith it because of the softness of the lens and the terrible ISO performance. It was a great decision, not only in those respects but in the simplicity and the fidelity of the color, and the body stabilization. I still keep it and use it as my personal camera, and some images end up systematically in my work projects.

    Its absolutely a "valid" camera in this day and age, and for me will be for many many years to come if not forever as long as it is still around. I think it will be one of those classic models that will have a following( and already has to some degree) like the lion Df and D700 and leica M9 and the Fuji X100 etc. I had two of them, and the first was a Titanium i sold to buy into some fuji gear several years ago. I always kind of regretted it and fast forward a few years i wanted one again and decided to sell all my fuji gear.
    I was shooting weddings and work with my Nikon system, but my Fuji setup was for my own traveling and day to day shooting. The same thing i had my Q for, just documenting things in my everyday life.
    So when i looked around for another Q i saw that they had the Q-P out, and that ticked all my boxes even more. They had changed the shutter button/switch that som had a problem with and you got another original battery, as well as being the best looking leica i had seen to date. It was just perfect for me at least.
    But the Q2 was also out, so i had to go back and forth over what my priority was an also weigh in the cost of course.
    I never had any issues with dust or moisture ruining my other Q and it seemed very sturdy, no problems at all. Sure i never shot in pouring rain, but i seldom do with any camera, and it could handle a light drizzle for sure if you kept it a bit safe.
    Other than that the other pros of the Q2 was more like cons for me. I was not keen on more pixels, it always felt 16-24 was the sweet spot for what's needed and what my computer could handle.
    It was slightly bigger which already the Q was as big as i wanted a everyday camera to be, so that was a con for me with the Q2. Also i heard many stating that it was not as good in low light as the Q was, and also that the images looked a bit more digital on the Q2 a bit too perfect. And that was also a con for me. I rather have character and "analog" look to my files than a perfectly sharp and digital look( not saying the Q2 has that completely...just comparing the two and from what i have heard other users say).
    So, i decided on the Q-P and could not be happier with it. I made some of my favorite pictures ever with that and my other Q, and for me its just the perfect documentary camera. Its not perfect for portraiture or sport or other genres, but it can do SO much and is so versatile and fun to shoot with. You can take great landscapes and nature shots( with the little macro) and the colors are amazing. Also the character of the Lux lens gives it that incredible look.
    I used it on a wedding once in a barn, and i also had the D4 and DF ( Nikon) with me, the lighting was horrific only candlelights and dim flashbulbs here and there. But the Q was the most usable files over all from that scenario. And the Df/D4 are known for those kind of capabilities.
    So in wedding scenarios its amazing for all the candids etc.
    So...the weird part i i sold it for getting an M240 and an M4 in the end lol. And i stil have the M240 with a couple of lenses. I love that kit now....but it took me a long while to get over the thought of not having my Q-P. And i still think its one of my favorite cameras ever. I would buy one in a heartbeat if i had the money.
    So, congratulations Matt on your Q, enjoy it as long as it lasts :)

    Hi, Matt.
    I really appreciate your uncompromised no surrendering to taboos, speech
    What has quality, works well and fits your needs is good, period.
    There are a lot of things in this world that, despite being of great quality, are always depreciate because that brand has better and more apreciated models, which, at the very least, is a waste of good equipment that is thrown into the under-dog league.
    I greatly appreciate seeing in your videos the lucidity and logic of giving the right emphasis to this type of equipment.
    Does Leica have bad equipment? Or do they have some who are amazing and others who are "just" very good?
    It is not because of my other very renowned Leica equipment, that I do not appreciate the excellent performance of the Z2X in the 35mm or D-lux 7 in digital, and enjoy every time I use them. In fact, I have already compared this with the twin Lumix LX100 II and undoubtedly the result is different, one has and the other does not have the Leica magic and excellence.

I want to mention that at about 1:30 in the video you state that the f/2.8 lens becomes an f/4 because of the crop sensor. I don't believe this is correct, from other sources I've seen and read. While the field of view certainly changes when mounted on the smaller sensor, the light gathering capability of the lens does not change, since the lens does not care what it is mounted on. I've been on the fence about Leica for a while now. My Sony camera is vastly superior in all performance metrics, so when I look at it that way, it's easy to just laugh it off. But there's an allure that I believe comes from the fact that I miss the 20th century, and the Leica M10 is exactly what 1950's engineers would build if modern digital camera technology suddenly dropped in their laps. So far, I've been able to resist the Leica temptress.

      Hi Nick, I still shoots film but digital instant photos make it much easier and faster to make a video on a camera. I have a backlog of undeveloped film I still need to do (feels like unproductive time now doing film stuff when every minute counts towards making vids, blogs etc. the T2 is the last film camera I did, I still need to do lots of others waiting and some photowalks all shot on film in different cities. Sounds like you need a fast shooting autofocus Slr with a fast zoom lens. That is where you are headed. However, you could quit your gear head mentality and learn how to shoot two M cameras with 2 lens at a wedding. and get great results. How fast you can shoot multiple photos does not equal how good your photographs are. The quality of your photographs depends mostly on the quality of your eyes:your ability to see, compose and shoot. Your portrait photography does nothing to develop decisive moment photography needed at a wedding. . A great example Bresson. Really !!!

      Thanks John! Yes model stuff is very controlled and as perfect as I can make it (up for debate I’m sure ha) and weddings is ‘run and gun’ as they call it. Minimal control and yes all about the moment. I’ve shot 2 M bodies for weddings for a long time M8/M9 then later M8/M240 then M240/CL then SL/M240 as I bought newer bodies with better high iso. I like Ms for wides and SL for prime primes (50 f1 etc) and longer. Works well but sometimes when subject is walking and I’m moving too if I want to shoot at a fast aperture AF would be nice rather than higher f stop and zone focusing and often using off camera flash. Maybe it’s just an excuse to try another camera to test but I loved the close focus ability in particular. 0.7m on the M drives me nuts! Over the years I use close focus lenses like DR and 2.8 Elmar with Goggles but then once subject more than 1m need to swap camera. I used Voigtlander lenses at 0.5m with live view (35 1.2) and lots of gear to try to get around it. I’m hoping the Q will mean use less kit and enjoy the day. Yes M are not designed to be shot close or pin sharp but I need the camera that lets me create the images in my head not limit myself to what famous photographers did. As I shoot film too I’ve tried SLR plus AF lenses, too slow so went back to M3! (Nikon F4/5). And agree shooting 4000 crappy images on a wedding day doesn’t help anyone. Clients have always been happy but I’m always looking to improve. (I said the Paul guy was nice and shot fast, I didn’t say I envied his images. It was a completely different style to mine). Less precise. Cheers.

    • @johnelder7449
      @johnelder7449 2 года назад +1

      My point is that you need to practice decisive moment photography in a forum other than just weddings if you want to get really good with a Leica M camera. Your portrait photography does not give you that practice. You have to shoot many events to learn how to anticipate a photo opportunity about to happen. A fast camera is not the answer at weddings. A fast eye is the answer

    I went to a Leica store to buy a Q2, but I wasn’t impressed with the camera build quality compared to a Leica M11 or CL. The CL felt more solid in the hand, I was looking forward to a CL2. RIP CL. 😢 I might still buy a used CL, but it’s good to know that you felt the AF performance was limited on that camera.
    For now, instead of a Q2, I bought a Ricoh GR3, which seems to fit my needs more. I’m still not used to 28mm, so I’m glad I didn’t spend big with the Q2 unless I love 28mm.

      Wait? ... you thought the Q2 build quality was not great? then you buy a GR3?? GR3 is a good camera but just a crappy piece of plastic tbh... The Q2 is incredibly well made and has the same build quality as an m10 in my opinion. (never held M11) Both the Q and Q2 are incredibly cameras and really well built.

    • @JP1050x

      @@monjue4459 ya, I’m surprised that no one really mentions how light and hollow the Q2 feels in the hand. Leica might have made it that way to keep it light. It’s about the same size of a M body with a big lens on it, but a bit lighter. I’m a long time Leica user, so I’m just stating my impressions about the Q2.
      The Ricoh GR3 is a compact magnesium body camera. It’s not plastic. But I prefer to use mine as an everyday carry and travel camera. The Q2 isn’t as travel friendly as the GR, because the Q2 is not a small camera.

So far, I like the GR3, but I often need to crop to get the look that I want. So, spending $1000 for the GR3 to test out a fixed 28 worked better for me. However, I shoot my small Olympus XA4 for travel. And my GR3 seems like a nice digital partner to my XA4. I’ll probably pick up a CL, for the killer 23/2 & 35/1.4 lenses.
