For perspective a Honda CR 500, a very fast and respectable dirt bike, makes 60hp at the crank. The SXV 550 in the video made 75 hp at the wheel which is roughly equal to 90hp at the crank. If you have ever ridden a CR500 you know that adding 30hp would create an absolute monster of a machine and that is exactly what you get with the SXV 550 . As far as reliability - once an SXV is properly tuned and set up and maintained, folks are getting 30,000 kilometers without an engine tear down. The XV platform came from the factory with a few defects, but once those were addressed, it was very reliable as long as the owner followed the very rigorous maintenance schedule. It's really easy to make a mistake while maintaining an SXV, leading to mechanical failure, which is why a lot of people reported reliability problems. EX: draining the gearbox oil thinking it was the engine oil, filling the gearbox oil thinking it was the engine oil(thus overfilling the gearbox oil), over/under filling the engine oil, improper starting procedure resulting in blown starters, etc etc. I would blame almost all of the poor reliability claims on owner error. The SXV is a true unicorn motorcycle once you ride one I challenge you to replace it with something that gives you 1/2 the thrills
Probaply not 75hp to the wheel tho, dynos can easily lie 10% up or down, to get more accurate whp it would need to be taken to more different dynos and get the average which would probaply be around 70 or so
That's probably been rebuilt by someone who knows what they're doing. Word is builders that know them can make them reliable. Seen one drag racing a gas gas 300 on a trail ride once. The gas gas won through reliability. Brand new Aprilia too.
The base engine doesn't even have that much problems to beging with. There's a few electrical problems too. Other than that well it's not unreliable, it's just a competition engine on a street bike, so yeah, it needs maintenance.
