I lost my home that I had finally paid off. Hit some really tough times, wasn’t able to work for awhile. No one would give me a loan. I was forced to sell for a fraction of its value ,ran out of time .state was close to taking it. So I had no choice but to sell. It makes me so angry. After all those years working so hard , finally paying off my mortgage. Then to lose it because of taxes. It’s criminal.

@@bifftannen1598 I agree. Property taxes hit people whose circumstances change upon retirement, and those who inherit properties very hard sometimes. Also, if the neighborhood gentrifies, they vote in tax hikes to force lower income people out of "their" neighborhoods. The taxing bodies would also benefit, as they get their money all up front, from the buyer, if cash, and the lender, if mortgaged, and they don't have to bill/assess constantly. Also, if people move a lot in a certain area, they get the full amount frequently.

Florida has a State Income Tax. Texas does not. This is why both the property tax and sales tax rates are among the highest in Texas. It's in Texas's state constitution to not have an Income Tax, so to get rid of property tax means the sales tax rate would have to be higher -- and I'm actually for that as that means EVERYONE contributes and doesn't put the burden on homeowners.

And for those who don't know how Property Taxes work in the State of Texas, please read. Some fear that this will drive appraisals way up in value. That can't happen as, by law, the most a county can increase the value of your property is 10% more than the previous year. This why protesting your taxes every year is so important. It holds the Appraisal District accountable as most counties do a blanket 10% across all properties and don't expect you to protest. You won't win every year you do this, but it does force them to justify as to why your property (home, oil lease, etc.) was valued the way it was. Realtors will usually run comps for you on houses that sold in your area that are similar to your own.

Why not regulate property taxes!!! If I purchased a house for $200k there’s no way I should be paying for a house that you deemed valued at 1 million based on market value! It’s fraud and criminal. Property taxes should be fixed at the time of purchase.

I wasn't aware that we didn't truly own our home and land until I purchased my first property in my twenties. When I was forty, I found out that once I paid off my land, I still had to pay for my house with taxes and insurance. If you can't pay your taxes for medical reasons, you risk losing your land and home. It isn't fair, and it's becoming more inevitable that I will end up renting an apartment as I enter my senior years because I can't afford my taxes. Hopefully, the taxes will continue to decrease and be done when you reach a certain age! JS Ginger native Texan.

The republicans in MI made a law back in the 1990's and the max they can raise an existing property tax (owned by the same person or business) is the inflation rate to a max of 5%. My taxes are about $1200 per year for my home (it has more than doubled in "value" according to Zillow) yet the max they can raise the taxes is 5%.
