As a Northern Irish, I can completely relate to this. Most people don’t realise the violence and fear of the Troubles we went through for about 30 years. In Northern Ireland, it very much matters if you’re a Protestant or Catholic, which is unlike anywhere else in the Uk, or even the world. Even after the Good Friday Agreement, (An agreement signifying the ending of the Violence and gun terrors of the Troubles). There are still some attacks and bombs in our country, which is not what you would expect from a British, developed country. These attacks are not often, but not unheard of. Anything there is a Protestant or Catholic parade being shown in any of our towns, there are tons of Policemen who are there ton make sure nothing happens. In fact, Northern Ireland is one of the most dangerous countries to be a Policeman in the world. To summarise, the Uk and Northern Ireland have a very troubled past with Ireland, and even the Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland. It has split our country in two and makes everything just more complicated. I recommend anyone who reads this comment to look up about the Troubles, it’s pretty. Interesting. You’ll hear things like Bloody Sunday and The Omagh Bomb (The two worst events of the troubles). Also, don’t mean to criticise but Northern Ireland is about 60% Catholic and 40% Protestant and Ireland is 95% Catholic. This is the first time I’ve ever heard a Geographical channel speak about Northern Ireland and the Troubles. I’m very appreciative that some light is finally being shown on our country and history, we’re pretty forgotten in my opinion. Thanks for the short

Most Irish people and brits get along great
Overly simplified and inaccurate aside from the odd nationalist most people in both Ireland and the UK get on well and both governments have a strong relation with each other.

I really wouldn't say we hate eacother. I know people that have a lot of Irish friends, and all the irish people iv met are very friendly. I get why they hate our government tho im not a big fan of them either but all that history nonsense only really effects polotical people and it makes no sense anyway since our generation is not the one that hurt ireland nor is theres the one that was hurt, it can cannot be undone but it can be healed, hate will not heal it but we are by being friends. Before the reign of Henry VIII, England was Catholic. During his reign, he issued a decree that all citizens of England were to convert to Protestantism under the new Church of England or face persecution. About 200 years later, England formed Great Britain (w/Scotland, Wales and Ireland). I believe it was Cromwell that got the idea to send over hundreds and hundreds of Protestants over to the area of Northern Ireland in an attempt to snuff out the majority catholic Irish. It worked, sort of, and Northern Ireland has been predominantly Protestant and pro-Crown ever since.
The first monarch to rule both England and Scotland was James I. He was the king of Scotland before taking the English throne after queen Elizabeth died in the early 1600's. The first monarch to officially unite the crowns of England and Scotland was queen anne who was from the same Scottish dynasty as James I(the Stewarts). Queen Anne founded the kingdom of Great Britain in 1707 and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was officially created in 1801 when Ireland joined (although Ireland had been under English and then British rule for a while) so no England didn't create the kingdom of Great Britain it was a Scottish monarch that did. Why do people always think it was England that created the union!? 🤦

1. Hatred is incorrect and is way too strong a word to describe the relationship.Ireland looks at the UK as a partner, though Brexit has impacted. There is no hatred except in Northern Ireland which is divisive.
2. Religion is not an issue in Ireland (Republic of Ireland) which is agnostic. Ireland is a humanist country. Catholicism is practised by a minority in Ireland. Northern Ireland again is different with Presbyterian type religions being a drag on progress. Religion the cause of more conflicts globally!

Mates, while I wisk the British and Irish union existed (desbite my DNA seems I'm more Gaelic/Celtic than English), unfortunately it makes sense why Ireland is independent as it was oppressived by the British (especially the English). Heck Scotland has a significant population than wants to leave too (especially after Brexit in 2016) What does that tell you all?
