The trailer really showed EVERYTHING...other than that, I thought it was just ok. "Sinister" was far superior. Great video as always Syd! 🙌🏻❤️

How I feel about Black Phone echos how Roger Ebert felt about Law Abiding Citizen when he said,
"Law Abiding Citizen" is one of those movies you like more at the time than in retrospect. I mean, come on, you're thinking. Still, there's something to be said for a movie you like well enough at the time." If I recommend it to anyone, I would sell it more as a coming of age film than as horror.

Amazingly, my run down local theater put this back in its rotation and I leapt at the chance to see it. It far exceeded my expectations. Really well crafted with some sparkling dialogue and more than a few fun scares. Kudos to the screenwriter and director for retaining Joe Hill's Stephen King vibe - like father like son. Fun stuff!

I never knew that this was influenced by Steven King before going into this film (let alone a short story), and now I want to read it after watching the film. I had a really fun time with this one, and great review as usual.

Can’t wait to see this one on Friday. I’m slowly becoming a big Ethan Hawke fan. I watched First Reformed for the first time last night thanks to your recommendation and that film is living rent free in my head. SO GOOD!!!

I had such a great time with this one! I know Sinister is scarier, but tbh I think I liked Black Phone more. Sinister gets too bogged down explaining everything and falls off by the end. I was consistently compelled through this one, I just wish there was one more big moment with Hawke before the end. I liked how there wasn’t too much elaborating on many elements-some could’ve used a bit more tying up-but esp with the Grabber I loved not knowing much. It was just overall very refreshing for someone who loves horror and esp Stephen King style stories!

Ethan Hawke has been putting work in this year, I’m excited to see this movie. I heard that it’s scary, but not overly scary. I’m still probably going to be covering my eyes through a majority of it haha.

I just read the short story and it’s really barebones. So much subplots were added to the film that didn’t really affect the main story (in the film, the little sister’s whole story arc was ultimately useless; she was there I think to make the emotional payoff at the end and to make the movie more uplifting given the dark subject matter). It’s also funny that the villain in the short story was not at all like Ethan Hawke in that he was described as very fat, bald and a clown (which makes the balloons more logical) not a magician which the filmmakers changed to avoid the Pennywise comparisons. He’s clearly inspired by John Wayne Gacy and doesn’t wear a mask (which I guess they added to the film to look more scary in the posters and trailers). It’s not a very good short story imo because it’s so underdeveloped but it was interesting reading the short story after watching the film. Also, more time has elapsed between the murders in the short story which explains why the community has let their guard down by the time Finney gets snatched up. This didn’t really translate well in the film when I kept saying to myself how incompetent the cops and the community were behaving when there’s a goddamn serial killer on the loose snatching people left and right. Anyways, I still overall enjoyed the film but I think I enjoyed comparing how the story was changed from print to film even more.

@Sydney Volpe. I just saw this channel and all I gotta say is “wow your so hot!”.
Your hotness is what attracted me as a 25 year old straight male to this channel and got me to subscribe but, honestly your enthusiastic review of The Black Phone is what got me to stay.
This is easily one of my most anticipated horror movies of the year alongside Halloween Ends even though, I wasn’t the worlds biggest fan of Halloween Kills that came out last year, it had it’s moments but, as with all middle chapters in a trilogy I get the feeling I’ll grow to appreciate it more once Halloween Ends releases this year and I can watch the entire trilogy Halloween 2018, Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends back to back to back.
Even though, I truly doubt Halloween Ends will be the end of Michael Myers permanently as he’s too much of a horror icon to put down permanently when it comes to cinema.
Also, it just so happens that Halloween from 1978 is a must watch every Halloween season for me but, I kind of went on a tangent when I didn’t mean to and I apologize about that, but if you happen to be a Halloween fan like myself then I’m sure you’ll understand.
You also seem to be a massive spider-man fan like myself or at least I’m guessing that based on the massive spider-man mask you have hanging up in poster form behind you.

This movie was good but not scary nor should it be labeled a “horror”. Sinister made this movie look like a Disney film. Come on now.

It’s a decent enough horror flick, but because the victims are kids, that’s the audience who’ll really appreciate it.
Just like Night of the Hunter; it’s more effective if the viewer’s age reflect those on screen as they can put themselves in the character’s predicament.

@Sydney Volpe I apologize in advance as I had a lot of cool fun behind the scenes info at least to me that I found out about that I wanted to tell you about after letting you know about a cool channel I like.
if you are a fan of hearing other peoples opinions on movies and trailers etc and you’ve never heard of this guy I highly recommend checking out and subscribing to John Campea.
He’s from Canada but, now lives in Burbank,California with his wife Ann but, I love how honest he is about his opinions on movies, a lot of people give him crap for being truthful and it not being the same as their opinion but, that’s what I love about the guys opinions, he simply doesn’t care what other people think and he is still going to give his honest opinion.
He actually talked about the trailer which, I agree gave far too much away between the two trailers which I made the mistake of watching both as I always do when I’m excited for a movie but, I hope I haven’t been spoiled on everything because, I stay away from the million different tv spots which for me are what really give away everything nowadays it seems.
He even said he went to CinemaCon a convention for investors and film fans etc and Ethan Hawke after they showed the trailer to promote this film he came out and said “you know, I typically don’t do villains however, if Scott Derrickson wants me to do a villain then I will do a villain.”
Which I thought was kind of cool and I also watched an interview with I believe CinemaBlend which is one of my favorite movie related websites for reviews and stuff where, they basically asked Ethan why he had a rule of not doing villains in the past.
His response basically pointed to Jack Nicholson’s iconic performance in 1980’s the shining where he said “I didn’t want to deal with what Jack dealt with that once people see your full unhinged madness inside like Jack unleashed on screen in The Shining people don’t forget that side of you and I basically didn’t want to deal with any of that.”
Which I thought was interesting reasoning wise of why he decided not to for the longest time and it makes me think he still might not do too many villains but, he may be more open to doing some here and there if the role genuinely interests him.
I also saw a interview with him and Scott Derrickson where Ethan was basically asked how he decided to do the role and he said and I’m paraphrasing here of course as it won’t be word for word what he said but, something to the effect of “I basically read the script decided I was going to do it and I called Scott in the middle of the night when I decided to do it and I got his voice mail so I basically read a line in the script that said “I’m gonna fucking kill you and it’s gonna hurt really really bad!”
What was funny about it was Scott who was sitting next to him confirmed it and he said “yes, that was a line in the script and that was Ethan’s sort of macabre way of letting me know that he agreed to do it.”
