- ”12 IMPRESSIONS”: A collection of visual narratives by artists Paul Clemence and Aksel Stasny exploring 12 art museums in Switzerland, including the BEYELER FOUNDATION, KUNSTMUSEUM BASEL, TINGUELY MUSEUM, ZENTRUM PAUL KLEE, KUNSTHAUS ZURICH and MAMCO/Geneva. Featuring iconic projects by RENZO PIANO, MARIO BOTTA, CHIST & GANTENBEIN, IVANO GIANOLA and KARL MOSER.
Invited to get acquainted with some of Switzerland’s top cultural institutions photo artist Paul Clemence and Aksel Stasny embarked on an exploratory journey that took them across the country to discover a rich repository of world class art housed in museums built in a variety of architectural styles. Equipped with their camera the duo captured on video the art, the architecture and the feel of each institution visited. The result is a collection comprised of 12 very personal videos (one at each location) that takes the viewer on an unique cultural tour. At times atmospheric and conceptual, the videos go beyond the simply documentary type videography to establish for each museum its own mood and narrative according to the character found at each setting. “Museums are such an interesting typology, offer so many design possibilities. This experience gave us the chance to observe an eclectic mix of approaches to it”, comments Clemence. “It was fascinating to examine how the different design concepts influenced the connection with masterpieces by say Monet, Andy Warhol, Giacometti or Tinguely”. “The most challenging and interesting aspect of this project was to arrive at a space, examine its atmosphere and then almost instinctively attempt to capture it through moving images”, says Stasny of the project.
The short video clips, feature some of Swizterland’s top museums: The Beyeler Foundation, Kunstmuseum Basel, Kunsthaus Zurich, Kunstmuseum Bern, MAMCO Geneva, Museum zur Gestaltung, Fotomuseum Winterthur, MASI/LAC Lugano, Zentrum Paul Klee, Tinguely Museum, Musée de l'Elysée Lausanne, Art and History Museum Geneva.
