I was there in 1991. I found Nicholas Treadwell, Enfant terrible of the English art world, setting up in a car showroom because the organisers wouldn't let him in the main hall. We got on very well. The works he was showing were streets ahead of the humdrum rubbish on show at Art Basel. I was in Basel to study the neuropsychiatric effects of melatonin.
I used to work the fair every year for McKee Gallery from New York. Great little city , lots of fun. I miss the Beyeler Foundation, the Kunst Museum , visiting the Isenheim altarpiece in Colmar, and the most awesome Doner Kebab place just down Clarastrasse from the Fair.
I had coffee in Basel and peed. Then I moved on to Italy. Later I returned to Basel and peed then got a coffee to go! Oh yes, I'd like to see the art show, but the timing was wrong. But I loved Italy, all of it. Luckily I visited many countries in Europe and UK while living in Wuerzberg, Germany. It would be great to return again, perhaps Next art Basel!
I love Perspective docs but this one was cut so fast I couldn’t digest what I was seeing… for that matter I couldn't see what I was seeing. Who who looks at Art at high speed? What is shame this wasn’t edited and directed better.
I think it was meant to intrigue and interest those who'd otherwise not head of Art Basel. More marketing than deep appreciation. An invitation to dinner - not the dinner itself!
If this place went up in smoke, hardly anybody would be upset by its apparent loss except for high-rolling art investors. Outside of the rarified, so-called, fine art movement nobody gives two hoots for this dross called modern art. It is all very much a case of the Emperor's new clothes in play. If Tracey Emin's unmade bed was dumped in a layby, everyone walking by would assume it is just another unfortunate bit of fly-tipping.
Art as entertainment. People often come from great distances just to experience temporary distraction from their empty lives. An hour later they have a nice meal at a hip restaurant then go to their hotel room to get some sleep. The lucky ones have a new friend they picked up at the show.
Art Basel is a tragedy for art at so many levels. One of the people interviewed say that the event is no longer Eurocentric-nothing further from the truth. This event is at its core a representation of what art and culture means for the Western cultural establishment. Everything that is fundamentally wrong with art right now is display in Art Basel. The way neoliberalism is manipulating the world of art is very worrisome. You can smell the money more than the paint on the canvas. The way they also have an event for designers and decorators tells you a lot, it feels like “ok , get your art here and then go across the street and buy the couch to match your painting or installation”. Also the fact that the event has branches in Miami and Hong Kong is more evidence of how the main goal of these kind of events is profit and not too much else. Can we find another European country that can surpass Switzerland when it comes to the love of money, banks and financial institutions?-it is so much the culture of that country. Miami-well, I don’t know if we need to go deep to describe perhaps one of the most superficial cities in United States. Hong Kong…well, not exactly a city know for its intellectual life, just like Miami. If you listen to the narrative of these people with their German accent, the way they talk about Art Basel and the future of such event, you can feel that they are comparing this glorified bazar with the biennials…scary as hell. Quite frankly, it would not surprise me if eventually, not to far in the future, these type of awfulness ends up as importan as the Venice biennale, or the Sao Paolo bienal. Depressing.
I've been to basel and yes it's everything the intro said but it does not have a vibrant food scene. When I tasted the Chinese food in the city centre, it was the worst I've ever tried. The local lady apologised because she said it's the best in town. I said she needs to get out of basel more
I noticed Waldemar was on for about 10 seconds ....hopefully the reason is that he is ashamed of the egotistic content of the show. I guarantee that in time these so called artists and critics will be seen as archaic embarrassments.
The problem is that nowadays any self expression is considered as "art". It´s really like any real culture was officially wiped out in the last hundred years. But there are still some excellent painters, like Guillermo Lorca etc.
@@isabellamusulo9190 Oh fuck off. Anything can be art. If all you like are photorealistic portraits in a 1700th century style you're a fan of history, not art.
As a full time artist for decades I absolutely despise the art market.... crooks all of them... dealers, galleries, critics and auctions are all crooks. they treat artists like garbage. I despise the art market and I'm glad artists can self represent online and at art fairs.. Go to hell art world.
Stopped watching after a few minutes. The films by Waldemar are great, this one (without him) is insipid. The music vids with Simon Callow are mostly poor too.
Art Basel is not the centre of The Modern Art World, the centre is the following art theory: Images are made of 2D shapes, 2D shapes represent 3D form; images represent 3D form. All Modern Art has to bow to it. I'm existing in poverty in exile a long long way from Art Basel because I am the person who wrote the theory. ... And Burnley beat Reading AGAIN. UTC.
I don't find anything truly worthwhile in the works shown in this video or in today's so called art world. It is very disappointing. I keep myself in my own world, making art which is utterly unfashionable today. I am grateful to God that I am not forced to like Modernism! I am free to make beauty. Praise God!
Mostly huge, well-financed commercial galleries with millionaire clients who purchase big name artists and then who resell to themselves can afford to ship some of the egregiously bloated artworks around he world.
With all due respect, contemporary art reaches I would guess a very minimal amount of the general public. It is not presented in general education as are many other essential subjects one reason is the exclusive patriarchal system we exist under which does not value aesthetic principles in daily life. These events are mainly playgrounds for the white supremacist indo european wealthy.
"white supremacist"? Clearly you are not familiar with the variety of artists and collectors. You are clearly a brainwashed Racist with an agenda of Hate. Probably a failed artists too with Sour Grapes Syndrome.
Clever to have Waldemar introduce the show. I (unlike some others) understand that Waldemar can't do ALL the documentaries himself.
Total tease...director seems to have the attention span of a humming bird on double expresso. Clip, clip, clip.
The camera never rests.
Pass

what are the neuropsychiatric effects of melatonin?
Walde is the man. I always look forward to checking out his documentaries. Keep the wave goin man - Can’t stop The Walde!
It's a market.

Hows the döner shop called?
Really glad to see these documentaries thanks. Waldemar.
This is all well and merry, but it was still the old Monet piece that drew my attention😂😂😂
I love Art Basel !

My 2nd HOME since 1997 Basel i visited Art Basel every year .
I see magnificent works of art gandering. It doesn't even know it's anything other than a frame.
2 small coffees > 16.90 euros > got in my Jaguar and went elsewhere.
So much enthusiasm about magnified amateurish doodles.
One day I will attend this event. The creme de la creme in the art world. Impressive.
I feel like I have watched this exact video before. Is this a rerun?
No it’s just the contemporary art scene. Been largely unchanged pretentious, craftless tat for at least 50 years.

Agree.
2-3 second clips are just irritating rather than engaging.
And yet it felt old fashioned to me and I'm wondering why.
Right! I do love these, but found myself wondering away from this & that's why. I wasn't seeing the pieces.

@@davidwright8432 It's like being promised a dinner and having it whisked away at the last minute 😁
I like the Documenta better for it's contrasts

well said
there is something there amongst all the critical theory, but most people; even industry pros, buyers dont have time for that.
True
It's Switzerland. Playground of the tax free elites.
This gammon isn't buying this pretentious bs even if I could afford it.
Well said, my friend
WOW
you find the most cutting edge contemporary art at art colleges, not art fairs
I highly doubt that with the left leaning policies being pushed now days 🤦♂️😂

Lovely
This is obviously based on past years. No one in a mask. Dead giveaway.
I saw stuff like that in Disneyland --but much better than this. Perspective is lowering its high standard with non serious art
Why the quick cuts? Either you want to show us, or you don't
Mark you are a Moran to the power of 34 .
the Art money laundry of 1989 or any year for that matter ...
The Center Of The Modern Art World is breathtaking craptacular.
I love Perspective and Waldemar, and I'm an artist and open-minded, but I can't say anything good about Marina Abramovic...
Tax Evasion: Basel
We have got one of the highest taxes in switzerland ... so wrong city dude
I live in Basel, we are not allowed to visit the Museums and any venues without 3 G. Unjabed are not allowed to move freely. It is sickening!
😔
At least it's not 2G+ like in Germany
Tut mir leid bünzli

We want to SEE these creations, not have them briefly flashed on screen for 2 seconds. 👎

Not really! Some of us paint in isolation. I am sure some of the displayed pieces are great, but that does not represent the whole world!
if you dont get art thats ok.

Do you think that grown men should be allowed to walk around in public wearing short pants, t-sirts, and baseball caps?
Certainly they should be allowed...but should they?
