Written about the Dakota Access pipeline that drew hundreds of tribes across the country to Standing Rock in South Dakota. With Trump's election, the fate of the pipeline, which Obama had temporarily stopped, was secure. Oil currently runs through it, from South Dakota where it was built through native burial grounds, through Iowa, Whitmore's family farm, and into Illinois. 7 Iowa landowners are currently in court fighting the emminent domain ruling that gave the pipeline company, Energy Transfer Partners, legal right to continue building and complete the pipeline. Their case is far from over, and will set long-term precedent regarding private oil pipeline's designation as a "public benefit," and over the building of future pipelines. Contact Sierra Club Iowa chapter to support the efforts of these 7 Iowa farmers standing strong in this David vs Goliath story that has implications for our long-term future environmental integrity in Iowa and nationwide (I am in no way connected with the Iowa Sierra Club, although I have been a volunteer activist opposing the pipeline in Iowa).
