you CAN button mash dmc 3 and finish the game... if you get incredibly lucky. that game was so brutal, they had to release the "easy version" later. so no, its not a game that you can button mash and expect to finish the map. at best you can buy tons of items, and brute force your way, but even then, you will have a tough road ahead. GoW on the other hand, pretty much every single one was just the same combo the whole game. it wasnt easy, but no where near as masochistic as DMC3.

I know I’m super later but I just finished my play through of it. I easily dropped around 60 hours into the game, completing the favors and valkyries. Yea, it’s really fucking good. Not only that but I think the storytelling is very well done too. The side quests really add to its depth but do so in an organic way that happens through the characters growing together, through their banter and ups and downs. While plenty of triple A games rely on spectacular set pieces and action sequences (of which this game has plenty) to tell their story, God of War let’s these moments shine while allowing the characters to process them in a very human way. The Vikings would damn me for such a statement but, I’m really looking forward to Ragnarok. Bravo Santa Monica, bravo
I’m watching this after playing ragnorok. And it gets me hype all over again. gow is the franchise that got me into games as a kid. To see them take make a modern fresh enhanced game while still paying much respect to the lore is so awesome. Santa Monica and insomniac have my heart lol.
@MortalGamerDC1 85 1) TLOU2 surpassed Witcher 3's GOTY awards, it has +300 GOTY awards right now, 2) Witcher 3 and God of War are two very different games, 3) I too prefer Witcher 3 over God of War, but God of War is better in some aspects (gameplay for example).
@MortalGamerDC1 85 play yakuza 0 that is the best open world game awards mean something sure but it isn't the end all be all and gow is certainly better i have played both game's witcher 3 was longer and it had gwent and that's it some questlines were nice but the over all quality and content gow is just simply better if you add both witcher 3 dlc i will say witcher has a better story but base game no way
@@sultanjelle9168 It was a really good time! They made the game look even more incredible on PC and the Valkyrie bosses were actually pretty challenging. Definitely comes in my top 10 action games and I can't wait for the next one.
2018 is one hell of a year confirmed Now if only people stop making battle Royal clone and work on good single player or make some innovation if multiplayer is their aim instead of making clone after clone
I'm still playing Monster Hunter World. I'm just happy the streamers from Destiny 2 dropped D2 and focused on MHW instead. It really shows a massive shift from greedy AAA schlock to more honest devs/publishers. No forced MP in God of War. No micro transactions. 2018 is looking good.
This is a good review, but the statement at 6:55 that devil may cry and Bayonetta are button-mashy is kind of offensive. DMC and Bayonetta are more about maximizing your ranking through stylish play, while GOW is more about simply surviving your foes. If you want to just finish Bayonetta, you can technically button mash, but if you want to get a rank higher than bronze, you’re gonna have to bring your fucking A-game. This is a good review, I just hate it when people call games with some of the most complex and expressive combat ever designed “button-mashy” just because the complexity in their combat usually requires more than one playthrough to make itself known.
I guess it just boils down to how you enjoy games. If you find yourself repeatedly playing through the games you buy, you’ll probably like the combat in Bayonetta more, and if you only play through most games once, GOW will have more to offer you
Also this is unrelated but the RPGlite systems in GOW suck dick. Your stats barely change anything about how you play the game and it’s just a boring, tedious, non-mechanic that only serves to waste your time.
6:54 Excuse me, what? Maybe if you play them on the easiest difficulty. Also, define "button mash". These are fast paced action games, of course you'll "button mash" at some point. Problem being, it's easy to tell someone who isn't good at DMC or Bayonetta and someone who is an expert. Have you even watched high level play of DMC4 with hands recorded. I get finger cramps just by looking at those and the skill ceiling for DMC4 is near infinite.
Marius Urucu Literally something he said on twitter: *"Man, there are a lot of very angry DMC/Bayonetta fans that **_really_** want to believe that those games are a lot more technically demanding than they really are."* I mean seriously how much mental gymnastics do you have to go through just to make this mediocre TLoU/Uncharted/DS clone look better than it actually is?
Tony Abreu Ikr? Everything you say triggers people these days. Every action game more or less feels like a “button smash to victory” when you play it with the easiest difficulty. That does not mean it has a low skill ceiling.
I cannot believe I didn’t start this game and finish this game until last night. What a treat. As a guy that started with kirbys adventure on NES, this game is an absolute masterpiece, and it has been a privilege to see the evolution of this medium.
@@ballinspalding11 but there are moments in the game where it will be like wait why is he doing that or why did she say that sort and then hel want to play the previous games

Someone ever played the Bloodborne dlc where you think the whole time „wtf how good level design can be“. But guess it’s too hard for a looter shooter fan
Oh man I couldn’t agree more. Based on what I played so far it is. Everything from the story to the immersion to the level design to the gameplay to the world building makes this an absolutely must play
Wow, I have never played this one. The new trailer made me look into this. Thanks for the spoiler free review, even 3 years later. Picked it up for $14.
Just a note: Dampen your expectations a bit before hand. Its good, but I know many who struggle to think its great, including myself. It definitely has problems...
You've only made me want this more and reassured me after all the hate the game has been getting the last couple weeks. I've said it before and I'll say it again: your content is *vinyl*
First time playing the game, when I got to Alfheim, I legit had to pause on my boat just to take in how beautiful it looked. I took detours just marveling at the water, the sky, the rose petals in the air and the lights of Alfheim. Few games can make a player stop dead in their tracks just to admire the beauty of their worlds. Last game I remember doing that was Bioshock Infinite.
Omg seeing this footage makes me soooooooo thankful my first experience playing this game was on the PS5 with the 60fps ps5 upgrade!!!! Loving it so far
Great review, I love how you talk about games. Your passion for them shines through. I hugely appreciate the spoiler free nature of this review to. This is the only video I have or will watch of this. I want to experience it as it’s meant to be experienced. Top job.P.s. loved the coffee in a car video to.
As I'm listening to you talk about GOW4, It makes me think about the Witcher 3. I feel the same way about the world, attention to detail, and the side quest all being so fleshed out. I know Witcher 3 is an open world game, but to discover new beast and new gear and watch how some of your decisions play out were truly next generation to me. I truly can't wait to play this, but want to know if may be I'm totally off base by trying to compare the two games, but to hear you talk is exactly how Witcher 3 made me feel. Great video btw God bless U!
Just finished this game and I'm still trying to pick my jaw up off the ground. Speechless! That's all I can say. Speechless. This review hit it right on the head with his quote 'This is a game of the generation'. Absolutely stunning! PLEASE tell me there will be a follow up to this or sequels to come.
I already buy it like a month ago and I counting the days. 5 days for the realese. Im so excited for the game. Im a big fan of God of War and everything I see about the game for me is the game of the generation. Im so impressed.
I looked for your review because I knew you'd be sensitive to this content. I am so glad I did. You nailed this review perfectly, no spoilers, exactly what I was look for... Did not expect the "almost no footage because it's that good spoiler free" video. very impressed. Thank you
Lol I just beat it like a month ago after playing RdR2 so I could see which game is really Goty and not just because everyone is hyping up one or the other. I'm not gonna lie this is the first game I've ever played where the pacing of the game is nearly perfect. There is no dull or boring moment in this game it's literally a scene from an action movie that last 30 hours long. I remember playing through TLoU and thinking that if it had better pacing and better gameplay I would give it a 10/10. But this game beats TLoU in both those aspects. The only thing I didn't like about this game was the fact that there weren't as many monster variations compared to the other GoW games. A lot of the monster were the same but just look different or had ice/fire/poison that was the only difference between 90% of them. There are other minor issues that I had as well but they don't really matter and is just a matter of opinion. But the monster variation is pretty disappointing to me but that is the only real knock I have on this game. The gameplay is amazing and satisfying as hell I would give this game 9.25/10 and I recommend this to anyone that likes action/combat games for sure and Imo it's the best game I've played in over 3 years.
I came back just to say thank you for everything you do man. This was the first review of yours that I watched, and I’ve been an avid supporter ever since. Thank you, and keep it up!
Love the review, and thanks for keeping it spoiler free. Also, Devil May Cry punishes very hard for button mashing. You may have a different experience on that which is cool, but in my opinion, DMC4 is one of the most complex hack n slashes around if you play as Dante or Vergil. It also has a very lengthy endgame with Dante must die mode that really tests your skills.Though, thats subjective on my end. God of wars combat is looking to be more deliberate than previous entries which is excellent.
BeThomsen TLOU is a game which showcases the value of a character development centered plot more than the narrative itself. The plot is predictable, but what makes the game exceedingly good is how the characters react, and the interplay of the characters in the situations they’re in. It’s like watching different renditions of Hamlet, everyone has a different perception of a story, and TLOU does an excellent job of bringing its characters to life and making them feel very real.
A major part of what made TLOU for me was the multiplayer. I loved the story mode plenty. But I base every MP I’ve ever played and ever will play on TLOU.
I've been gaming since the only footage available for the game you were considering buying were the 3 or 4 pictures on the back of the box. I love that you didn't show the game to save the experience for the player. I wish more reviewers did this. Nice job.
Already pre-ordered the collector's edition. Thank you so much for the spoiler-free review. I am still going in with near blinders on. I cannot wait for Friday!
I played God of War in 2018 and I really liked it. Great story and fun combat. A few months later, I played New Game+ and had a blast until about halfway through where I had other things going on and dropped it. Now, in 2021, I'm replaying it fresh on PS5 and I'm only just now falling in love with it on that level that you did. I've been stopping to get every collectible, solve every puzzle, explore every nook and cranny as soon as they're available, and thinking through my upgrades very carefully. It's like I'm only just now experiencing the true scope of the game and it is on another level. The way the open-world, puzzles, linear sections, bosses, narrative, and sweet sweet combat mesh is holistic in a way you very rarely see in a AAA experience, if ever. The difficulty settings are a bit stupid but, beyond that, the game is an utter masterpiece in every way. Also PLAY WITHOUT THE HUD. SO MUCH BETTER.
It's currently 4:30 AM, this was posted an hour ago and I'm now deciding to watch this video instead of sleeping. That's how damn good you are at what you do, Skill Up.
Bayonetta literally punishes you at every stage of the game for button mashing while rewarding tounfor precise dodge timing and high skill combos DMC doesn't let you get away with mashing outside of baby easy mode or the infinite devil trigger modes offered in some special edition releases Bro probably never got higher than bronze/D rating. Calling peak action games "button mashers", pheh! He probably uses the IGN elden ring build, too.
The amount of control that you have in the combat is just mind boggling. I absolutely love the combat in this game. You can time things just slightly differently and it changes the outcomes of your attacks and the animations significantly. I love it.

*One of the best games i ever played*
Didn’t want to buy the game
Watched 4 minutes of this video
Ordered the game
Enz Und So he got me like that w monster hunter. Don't regret one cent of that purchase.
I waited 3 years for the pc-release just to come back and say "You were right... "
Skill up...massive fan. You never let us down. Thankyou
That's why we call him skill up, not skill down
This is the best game I’ve ever played
@MortalGamerDC1 85 1) TLOU2 surpassed Witcher 3's GOTY awards, it has +300 GOTY awards right now, 2) Witcher 3 and God of War are two very different games, 3) I too prefer Witcher 3 over God of War, but God of War is better in some aspects (gameplay for example).
@MortalGamerDC1 85 play yakuza 0 that is the best open world game awards mean something sure but it isn't the end all be all and gow is certainly better i have played both game's witcher 3 was longer and it had gwent and that's it some questlines were nice but the over all quality and content gow is just simply better if you add both witcher 3 dlc i will say witcher has a better story but base game no way
Revisiting this review 3-4 years later now that I can finally play it on PC. Can't wait to jump in tomorrow!
How did you find it. I replayed it on PS4 because the PC release reminded me, I still think it’s incredible
@@sultanjelle9168 It was a really good time! They made the game look even more incredible on PC and the Valkyrie bosses were actually pretty challenging. Definitely comes in my top 10 action games and I can't wait for the next one.

2018 is one hell of a year confirmed
Now if only people stop making battle Royal clone and work on good single player or make some innovation if multiplayer is their aim instead of making clone after clone
Twitch and Twitter feed makes me throw up at the moment, PUBG and fucking Fortnite everywhere..
god of war sets the bar high les hope more single player comes for now we can sleep happy couse more god of war games will come
Just wait till September when spidey releases

Marius Urucu agreed that triggered me lol
Tony Abreu I give a fuck since what he said is an outright lie. Have a problem with that?
Marius Urucu
Literally something he said on twitter:
*"Man, there are a lot of very angry DMC/Bayonetta fans that **_really_** want to believe that those games are a lot more technically demanding than they really are."*
I mean seriously how much mental gymnastics do you have to go through just to make this mediocre TLoU/Uncharted/DS clone look better than it actually is?
Tony Abreu Ikr? Everything you say triggers people these days. Every action game more or less feels like a “button smash to victory” when you play it with the easiest difficulty. That does not mean it has a low skill ceiling.
Yeah that part made me go.. HOLD UP!
30 hour God Of War game... im in.
I’ve trusted all your game reviews thus far, haven’t been disappointed yet. I’ll take your word for it and get this game.
I cannot believe I didn’t start this game and finish this game until last night. What a treat. As a guy that started with kirbys adventure on NES, this game is an absolute masterpiece, and it has been a privilege to see the evolution of this medium.
I just started playing once it was free on PS5 - it's an amazing game. I can't believe I waited this long.
Yo you’re wild for that but that’s also the best way you could’ve experienced it. Don’t mind me I’m just here to get hyped for GoW Ragnarok.☠️☠️☠️😂

Button mashing through DMC and Bayonetta? When was the last time you played those games, man?
Never
The fanciest, most polished Aussie we've ever produced. Great review, super engaging and informative.
Someone ever played the Bloodborne dlc where you think the whole time „wtf how good level design can be“. But guess it’s too hard for a looter shooter fan
I hate these types of comments but you just earned a new subscriber!
Vishal Daryani i second that.
"In DMC or Bayonetta you can just button mash your way to victory."

2 years later and still the best game I’ve ever played
As I'm listening to you talk about GOW4, It makes me think about the Witcher 3. I feel the same way about the world, attention to detail, and the side quest all being so fleshed out. I know Witcher 3 is an open world game, but to discover new beast and new gear and watch how some of your decisions play out were truly next generation to me. I truly can't wait to play this, but want to know if may be I'm totally off base by trying to compare the two games, but to hear you talk is exactly how Witcher 3 made me feel. Great video btw God bless U!
i fucking love this guy. i watch and enjoy alot of reviewers, but skill up is just so REAL.
Man I loved tLoU, Horizon and the Uncharted series, sounds like I’m in for a treat. Great spoiler free and passionate review I’m sold.
Real good review like that spoiler free approach. This is the only review I will be watching thanks for your hard work
"Best game of the generation." Came out the same generation as Bloodborne, Breath of the Wild, and Knack 2. The hype is blinding.
Well deserved i say...
Its better than all those games lol
Knack 2 babyyyy
GOW is, by far, better than the games you mentioned... Without question, the best game to come out for this generation...
Daniel DeVito he never said it wasn’t

Mates there’s gonna be a sequel 🥳
I'm playing this for the first time on the ps5. The console was worth it just for this game and Bloodborne alone.
You should try persona 5 if you haven't played it yet
@@wmvnotmp4 I tried it. Played for about 4 hours. Couldn't stand it anymore and uninstalled.

They put too much time in the valkyries xD
Yeah imagine if this game had more enemy varieties. Hopefully they fix that in the sequel
Finally! Updated my feed exactly on time lmao. Stayed up all night for this!
The Redeemer Same here!
Wuutttt... you didn’t like The Last of Us?? I think it’s pitchforks time guys.... RiP SkillUp 1934 - 2018
Salim B. Well, it was predictable asf
predictable ? hmm no, ending was no way predictable most stories take the safe "good guy" option
Salim B. That game sucks.
Nice job.
I’ve played through it 3 times. Will probably play it again in a year
Skill Up I love you man but seriously, you can't button mash in DMC or Bayonetta.

Already pre-ordered the collector's edition. Thank you so much for the spoiler-free review. I am still going in with near blinders on. I cannot wait for Friday!
Holy shit, never seen you this hyped before, I need to buy it!
THANK YOU!:D i only partly watched the review from ign, and it was filled with spoilers, something without them is really good :D
It's currently 4:30 AM, this was posted an hour ago and I'm now deciding to watch this video instead of sleeping.
That's how damn good you are at what you do, Skill Up.
Just finished god of war the pc release yesterday and everything this guy said in this review is still true. The game kept blowing my mind.
Bayonetta literally punishes you at every stage of the game for button mashing while rewarding tounfor precise dodge timing and high skill combos
DMC doesn't let you get away with mashing outside of baby easy mode or the infinite devil trigger modes offered in some special edition releases
Bro probably never got higher than bronze/D rating.

I love it.
