    Judy Kuhn is always spot on, heart felt and fabulous. I love the timbre of her voice, along with her diction, pitch, and heart! Laura Benanti, Jessie Muller certainly follow in Judy's tradition of beautiful clean, precise singing. But it's SO good to have this gem! Looking for more Judy Kuhn!!

      TOTALY! Now I can see how lovely she must have played Cosette with the lovely innocence she shows here. She left by the time I saw it and I saw her replacement.

    I just saw the new revival, and had a great time. But I have to say, Judy Kuhn has a vulnerability and earthiness that Laura Benanti is missing, which left something wanting for me. Thank you so much for putting this up, especially since Ms. Kuhn isn't on this productions cast recording. Truly Wonderful.

      "How I see what you mean!" but I also fell in love with Laura's ability to make it hilarious and sweet! She had me cracking up and sympathizing with her!

      I agree; I think I like Boyd Gaines' performance best as well.

      laura made amaila seem softer in her letters than she was to georg. she made amaila seem more independent as a unmarried woman in the 1930's, which was often frowned upon at that time.

      No, she's not. The revival's cast recording was done with Judy's replacement, Sally Mayes.

    Every performance of Judy Kuhn's seems to become the definitive performance of that song for me. A once in a lifetime voice combined with superb acting skills make one of the greatest Broadway performers of our era. Thanks for posting this!!

      Truly incredibly special. I love her on the two FUN HOME recordings, which I believe are the most recent ones I have with her on them. I do very much enjoy Ms. Frantantoni's performance on the ocr, but would so have loved to have Judy Kuhn as well.

    I've often wondered why Khun wasn't considered for Christine in Phantom? It's pretty common for singers who played Cosette to do the role and Khun certainly has the soprano for it. She would have been a marvellous replacement for Brightman back in the early run.

    • @BakingItOnBroadway
      @BakingItOnBroadway 5 лет назад +7

      She might've been considered for a replacement at some point, we'll never know. But in terms of originating it on Broadway ALW was pretty dead set on Sarah Brightman coming over to do it. And besides, Judy was busy starring in Chess that season as well.

    She has a wonderful voice yes, but she is such a great actress. It felt like I was listening to gossip as she was singing, which is how the song is supposed to be!
    Like the faces she makes are so natural and not overdramatized like some others do.

      Going from the 2nd to a high note that’s the 5th and landing on tonic is about 200 years old. The actual run up to the cadenza in PotO and this have nothing in common, but the leap up then coming back down - super opera-y.

    Tell me if I'm right - and I've always wondered why she left the show - but here's my understanding: Judy was in the show when it was at Criterion Center before the official "Broadway" opening (CC was a smaller off Broadway house even though it's was right there near Times square) until August 1993. When she show officially opened at the Brooks Atkinson in Sept/Oct, Judy had gotten Sunset Boulevard, which was set to open in November of the following year. It may have had an opening date of sooner than that at the time she signed her contract, which, not knowing how long the open run of She Loves Me would stay open, would have led her to leave the show anyway, so she decided not to do the open run of the show (She Loves Me). I'm not sure if she had something else in the way from Sept 93 into early/mid 1994 that would prevent her from doing the show. I wish there was a way we could find out. As it turns out, the show only ran from Oct 93 to June 94, which would have left time for her to do both shows anyway, but she couldn't have known that. Even actually if she did a year in SLM Oct 93 to Oct 94 it would have allowed her time, but it would be completely overlapping and no time in between. I am not sure. Does anyone know?

      @auroraspiderwoman5886  5 месяцев назад

      The L.A. "Sunset" opened Dec. 1993, just a few months after the London/world premiere. So Judy could not have done the "She Loves Me" transfer. And the Criterion Center run of "She Loves Me" was a Broadway run.

    My favorite rendition of this song together with the one of Laura Benanti. I much prefer Judy's singing over Laura's (I don't really like her vibrato) and her acting is really sweet, sincere and on point. But I LOVE Laura's interpretation of Amalia. She is so wonderfully awkward and it's just hilarious. Still both absolutely great performances.

      Paula have you heard the original 1963 with Barbara Cook and all her other performances of the song until she was in her seventies.?

  • @smurf902
    @smurf902 5 месяцев назад

    We really dont know how Judy did the rest of the role, but it seems she played it more down to earth and warm than Diane did. Diane had a sweet but more bubbly, comedic take on it (Diane Fratantoni). She has a fabulous voice, but it was not as earthy and warm as Judy's. Judy has a mix-belt sound that then has a soprano extension. Barbara cook had a much more soprano-esque quality, even though she sang nearly everything in a quasi-mixed way, a la Julie Andrews, but it's less obvious that she's halfway mixing because it's a speech like quality as opposed to a yelled or head dominant... Voice geeks out there exactly what i mean!
