Great to see the holy grail of steam locomotives back on the rails: The UP class 4000, representetd by 4014, is a hallmark of rail history and every true trainspotter will be pleased by this sight. Now get her back into steam !!!!! Keep up the good work !
I am so glad that steam train fans are still busy with trains. At age 10 I was afforded a chance to actually drive a steam train to a wye and back to the station in Calumet Michigan. My friend Ronnie Toupin and I along with Mr. Norman LaBonte, the train maintenance boss operated a steam engine belonging to the Duluth south Shore and Atlantic with one passenger car and one baggage car about 3 miles. It was the most thrilling moment in my young life. It still may be despite a 25 year trooper career, a military tour, and several years trying cases as a prosecutor.
+Snuffy's Cat - great work!!! To see #4014 sitting where had been for all those decades, then the progression through the car park, rolling at night and the later shots - awesome!!! Thanks so much :D
Thanks for your extraordinary efforts to video 4014 moving point to point, Snuffy'sCP. I've never watched a train chased from a public bus before. Touche' and Well Done!
Great video of a great piece of machinery. That's gonna be an impressive loco when they've given it the TLC treatment. Loved your video, especially the night shots and the shots in the cab.
Thanks so much for posting! Living in Germany now and nice to see what's happening in my old haunts. I really appreciate the time and care you take in making your videos.
For someone using public transport, you have done an excellent job. I would have loved to be there to do what you have done. Alas, finances and time intervened. Its hell of a long flight from Brisbane to L.A., and timings where up in the air. As I said you did one hell of a good job. Keep posting
Beautiful! You made some great catches there! First time the old boy has seen some speed in over 50 years, can't wait to see it under it's own power :)
From this side of the pond this is just great to see. as a steam nut here in the UK go the yanks. The sheer size of the big boy, I can just see foghorn leghorn saying Now I say son, I said I say that there is what ya call a locomotive
Excellent footage!!!!! Love that lead engine, #4884, go figure. That black and white photo at the end should have everybody without their vest. Keep up the good work.
GREAT VID Snuffy!!! I'm no longer living in SoCal, and so couldn't be there for this historical event. Your video really brought me into the whole experience. THANKS!! I especially liked that bit at the very end, and the fade to B&W? Nice touch!
Nice video, Snuffy! I was there at Covina also! Shame I didn't bump into you there; it would have been great to meet the person behind these great videos! Great video, nonetheless!
Fantastic--fabulous coverage. I spy myself at 12:02--I hope my being down there didn't detract from your shot. No kidding about it not being so easy to get out there and chase on public transit--I had to leave my room before 4 AM to get to Covina by 7, and I ended up taking seven bus trips, two subway trips, and one Metrolink trip over the course of the day. It was worth it, though.
Oh I don't mind at all. How's your shot of 4014? I left home at 10PM and got Covina at 1AM. I was pretty lucky that the last two section of chasing, Metro 194 came right in time and able to beat the train from Walnut to Pomona.
This has to be one of the best things Union Pacific has ever done, undertake to retore 4014 Big Boy. Cannot wait to see her steaming on the tracks again, where she belongs.
greetings and salutations, bumped. across your clip on the wasatch being pulled put of pomona ca., would have liked to been in your shoes did a little homwork and was amazed at all the work involved in the process did a really decent job catching all the pertinent details
It's 2020 and the Big Boy finally ran last year! From what I saw and heard the crowds were big and very excited when they saw the massive steam locomotive run for the first time in over half a century! It went to the 150th celebration of the transcontinental railroad and a tour across America and I even saw the Big Boy as well!
Are the tracks in the US of the same gauge as in Germany? From the camera's point of view at 11:50, the tracks seem pretty wide, just as in Russia. The so - called "Regelspur", or Standard Gauge, measures 1435mm, or 4' 8 1/2"".
I would not mind see that video that drone took of the pass by.. if you look at mark 19:17 on the left side between the signs you'll see the drone drop on the left.. could be interesting shots for sure.
What a glory to see, side by side, two of the most powerful UP locos, at their time. Bigoy and a glorious Centennial. How nice it will be whan 4014 is come back to tracks. Hardly can wait. Did you realise at 14:00, the rear loco has the same number of wheels composition of 4014 engine (4-8-8-4). Quite curious, or they intented to do it by purpose? Vegas Pro running?
Just found out today that the Union Pacific steam crew in their search for a big boy seriously considered the4017,but it was turned down by the National Railway Museum in Green Bay Wisconsin because The museum didn't want to give it up. It is in such good condition it looks like all it needs is the head of steam and it would be ready to go.
Green bay railroad museum is a tricky one. Yeah, the locomotive is in possibly the best condition, but the actual museum was built around her and the other exhibits as they're all on isolated tracks. The only locomotive that has ever come out of there was the A4 Dwight D Eisenhower, and even then it was a very difficult job. The big boy would be nearly impossible to remove without having to demolish the building, and as it is one of their main attractions, they decided to keep it there and go for 4014 instead
cameron james Four diesels ranging at 440,000 lbs, Ten hoppers assuming loaded ranging at 130 tons apiece. Light load. Sorry but I have seen two 90 MAC's handle 13,000 tons.
just awesome.. does anybody know if its at the up depo near long beach? I forget what city exactly but its the one on the alemada corridor lines? I heard 4014 will be there for a bit before going to Wyoming...???
Am already saving money for a transatlantic flight in order to watch US engines - their sheer size is something to see, well, everything is bigger in the States, isn't it?
After the 4014 is officially restored and ready to ride the rails again, will she be pulling passenger specials like the 844 & the 3985, or will she be back on freight trains. I kinda really want to see both.
Great video!! Thanks Probably a stupid question but why wouldn't they remove the side rods, main rods, etc. to save wear, Surely they removed or disconnected the piston rods and other linkages? No sense putting 1300 miles on all that running gear for no reason, huh? Maybe the stuff is too hard to remove, but if it rotates well enough to leave attached you would think it could have been removed, but maybe not or they would have. Thanks again 20 Side rods/Coupling rods - Connects the driving wheels together.21 Valve gear/motion - System of rods and linkages synchronising the valves with the pistons and controls the direction and power output of the locomotive.22 Main rod/Connecting rod - Steel arm that converts the horizontal motion of the piston into a rotation motion of the driver wheels. The connection between piston and main rod is supported by a horizontal slide-bar behind the cylinder.23 Piston rod - Connects the piston to the cross-head axle, which drives the main/connecting rods.
Simply enough, because they didn't have too. Generally the side rods and all the other guff will only be removed if they absolutely have to, such as with locomotives sent for scrap or ones that are not oiled. Its an obnoxious job to remove all the rods and connecting gear and if the locomotive is well oiled and greased up, it doesn't cause too much wear. The only part that seems too be missing is the piston rods, which will be because the piston is lubricated by steam oil in the steam so would wear.
Wouldn't it just be fantastic if when this badass is back on the rails some UP representative says," oh, we also have an ALCO 9000 class that we wrote off as scrapped, but wasn't, and we've been restoring her at a top secret location and she'll be back on the rails in a year or two"? Man I'd love to see a rigid-frame monster like like straighten out a few curves... wishful thinking I suppose, but I guess we can dream.

Good old fashioned American pride, something china will never take from us. Gives me goosebumps every time I watch 4014 get closer to living again!
Nice touch using engine 4884 to bring her home.

America sure knows how to do it big. Great vid ...

Like a bunch of kids pulling Grandpa around yelling wake up!
Also- what's all the red hoses around the engine? Pressurized lubrication while rolling??
Chris Beard The red hoses are carrying compressed air.
Copy that, thanks.

Learnt about their existence through the Japanese anime Galaxy Railways. Hope to see them in person one day.
To run the rails with but I was hopping they the more famous 4012 big boy loco. It's the one well shown in all the books on trains.
Great Video!

Thumbs up!
Thanks!
addendum, I see U.P. is leaving nothing to chance, two high horse units on either end, and a string of hoppers to add to brakeing assistance
Oh yeah baby she is finally finished!!
2:09 Workout on the job! A 2nd use for the giant steam locomotive!
Imagine the crowds on the Big Boy's first outing under steam!
They would need to have 844 and 3985 running as well... And even THAT can't be enough!
For what?
Hauling all the crowds that would come out on 4014's first run after the restauration.
I hope 4014 will meet with 611 or the flying scottsman

Snuffy's Cat Productions why didn't Union Pacific use their centennial locomotive to help push their Big Boy locomotive
Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 was restored to operated for the fantrip.

Gentlemen, UP has made it offical....out of all the class 1's, they have the biggest.....
Where can I get a vest like that one guy had? It said 4014 on back
Now its restored and rolling once again
So... the SD40-2 hauling the train with the caboose and boxcar marked the last time (or only time) the UP ever traveled on this line?
Wonderful...
Thanks Don,four diesels and ten hoppers? But I suppose you'r right.
Thanks & yes.

Since this loco is in such good condition the restoration won't take as long
Wow that's is awesome!!

will the big boy drive through pennsylvania millcreek
0:54 - Dude, Union Pacific 4014 is coming back to California this October.
After the 4014 is officially restored and ready to ride the rails again, will she be pulling passenger specials like the 844 & the 3985, or will she be back on freight trains. I kinda really want to see both.
good job on the train
