    I've worked in a resale thrift store for over 15 years. We always tried to price things within reason, so people could afford them. Now, the store is under new management and they seem to think everything is worth a ton of money. Antique furniture is priced twice of what it's worth, china and knick knacks priced like they're in a high end antique store. And we're not talking rare items here. Common things. I know antiques and collectibles and the pricing is outrageous. And what happens? It sits there, takes up space and even with a sale it still sits there. We have a lot of items coming in everyday, we need to move this stuff. If people want to pay those kind of prices, they can just go to the mall, dept. stores, or high end antique shops. The word THRIFT is no longer applicable.

      The same thing is happening in Australia. Some of them are priced dearer then you can get it new at Kmarts, target etc.

      Teresa Camp What these stores don't seem to get is that they may have 100 people as foot traffic a day versus millions of buyers online. The odds of someone looking for a high price collectable is pretty slim in a little shop.

    I stopped shopping at goodwill when I found a pack of new pillow cases priced at $12. Found out later they were doller general for $5. Found a used "PINK" shirt for 10.99. Found out it was original 7.99 at Victoria secrets. It was there stocking stuffer shirts for Christmas. They sold them rolled up in a candy like package. Never been more than 7.99 each. That stopped me right there. There is something very wrong with that. Goodwill is not a threat shop anymore...junk is sold for top doller. I get cheaper things at walmart

      I refuse to donate to Goodwill ever!! I have friends that told me how they wouldn't take a recliner she tried to donate because of a small burn hole in the arm and the fabric was "outdated"! When shopping at Goodwill one has to be careful about the prices. It helps if you shop a lot at several different stores so you can know what things are going for. Also, you can check the internet via your cell phone to check prices as well. I do this quite a bit.

    I buy most of my household items and clothing at goodwill/salvation army; I can obtain MUCH higher quality goods for my dollar. I love wool/cotton clothing, but it SHRINKS like crazy sometimes, I can purchase a pre-shrunk item and make sure it fits before taking it home. It seems so many people buy new things every season and simply discard "last year's" items. Some people have TOO much money. My favorite thrift store buy: A Nordstrom's cashmere sweater. New with tags. "On sale" at $365. Goodwill price $4. My daughter used it as pajamas for a year or so until it fit well enough to wear outside. I get Carhardtt coats for $35. I know you feel me. Best of luck on your sales! I see so many great deals on things I don't need personally. Hope your business takes off

    Goodwill has gone crazy with their prices, you have to bring your own bag, and now they have stopped accepting furniture which is a big mistake in my opinion, they could have just stopped taking couches and big items.. I don't think people are going to make two trips one to Goodwill and one to some other store to donate the furniture I think it's all going to go to one place and it's not going to be the Goodwill.

      Due to the size of furniture and how long it tends to take to sell, a lot of thrift stores and resale shops can't take them. It is really unfortunate. I remember in my home city there was a charity that started that specialized in cleaning, refurbishing, and reselling furniture to fill that gap in the market. Where I live now there's a place in a nearby town that collects old damaged furniture and refinishes or repurposes it to sell as shabby sheik furniture. That's pretty much what it takes for furniture to be worth anything in most cities due to the cost of floorspace. A banged up or stained piece of furniture just isn't going to sell because most buyers don't know how to fix it or don't have the time and space for projects like that.

    • @williamthompson1455
      @williamthompson1455 2 года назад

      Do you not know 1 in 3 homes has bedbugs on average. It 100% makes sense why they don't except furniture. You have got be dumb to think a place should take your trash because you think your shit doesn't stink. Plus like the other person said. It's huge. Takes up way to much space and most of the time it doesn't even sell let alone the reason why the furniture is being donated is because it's in shitty or broken condition. Like burn holes. Rips. Broken supports. Yeah it would be stupid to let people drop off their large trash so they would have to pay someone to take it to the junk yard. So really a smart idea to not take in furniture. Kinda of a ignorant take you have here.

    Maybe picking that receiver up for $1 would have been a good idea. If it sells for $100 normally you could have put it up for $30 plus shipping for parts and still made a buck. I don't like selling electronics because of multiple returns but I will if it's for parts especially vintage units. You may not want to fix it but there are a lot of people who do it as a hobby or they need specific parts from it for their other unit. I've had success selling vintage electronics for parts and the best thing is I never get it returned because they know it's not working and have intentions to fix it.

It worked almost as well as those vacuum bag sealers and I'd have a relatively flat item, then it could go in a mylar mailing envelope relatively cheaply. I'm not sure about Goodwill's or other thrift stores but value village or the ones on my state..but value village will pay big brothers big sisters a by the pound amount of the items that the big brother big sisters trucks bring in from their purple donation bins. they don't pay for baby items beside clothes really because there is to many recalls for them to be liable for. My son's father use to go around and collect all the time from the donation bins at certain properties, and they get to put their bins at these store with the stores permission, and the agreement that they will clean up within a certain amount of feet around the bins. So they do pay a price for a good amount of donations but by the pound, not sure if it's just clothing or everything but the big brother big sisters employees separate the household an clothing items that are loose. If your interested in knowing more I can ask what it use to be but could of changed over the years. The items people bring right to the store are different and they make pure profit off though.

    To get an accurate hourly wage rate, you can divide the $329 profit by the amount of time spent driving, picking, photographing, editing, uploading, correspondence, packing, mailing drops, etc. Also don’t forget to deduct the gas and packaging costs. Finally, the opportunity costs for you are working a 8-4 job that provides medical insurance, 1-2 weeks paid vacation/year and maybe a 401k or stock options.

    I wish there was a way that you can check out inventory before you go to the thrift stores, I've been looking at all my local ones to find Kirby vacuum cleaners, expensive machines that you can find for as low as $9 and usually all it needs is a belt and bags for it and it'll run perfectly.

      The managers are instructed to keep back ANYTHING that might be worth money. Most of the owners have antique stores that they take them to, and sell for profit.

    • @jamesfournier3458
      @jamesfournier3458 3 года назад +2

      In a lot of cases, the managers or people pricing don't have the expertise or knowledge to be pricing anything. I've seen too much about what goes on in the back rooms of a thrift store. One supervisor was selling stuff to dealers out the back door. Of course, they were caught and fired but I'm sure this still goes on.@@jenniferkay9789

    Unfortunately, the prices at Goodwill (and other thrift store chains) is totally dependent on your area. Living in an upscale neighborhood, *NOTHING* is under $10. Well..records are and some shirts on the racks...but household goods all start at $10 and go up from there...and anything of value is always behind glass. Saw a Swatch watch behind lock and key for $29...I think that was more than it sold for when it was new back in the 1980s.

    Hi Justin, In general, if what you’re picking isn’t super breakable and it’s already in the original box do you put them in an additional box to ship? Also, with the varying cost of shipping why do you ship for free? Thanks!

    • @propicker
      @propicker  3 года назад +2

      Most things get an additional box. Only on really large items or awkwardly shaped items will we consider relying on the manufacturer's box.

    • @propicker
      @propicker  3 года назад

      Yes, I have an ebay store. I would suggest getting the ebay app. Find a blank backdrop to take photos and just list a few things. Make sure they are well described.
      If you don't know what to price something as you can search the item, then hit filter and select sold items. You can then see what the item is actually selling for to figure out pricing. Good luck!

    VERY fortunate to find such excellent items. I see lots of people "picking" Goodwill et al. Profits such as seen here have to be unusual. True getting anything at a good price but the reward is finding someone who is willing to buy at almost retail price.

    The big Goodwill that is the Corporate Goodwill in Orlando likes the clean the bathrooms when everybody needs to go to the bathroom. And you can't use any bathroom until they clean both bathrooms. And you have a lot of old people there. And they can't make an exception from some lady that's about to P her pants. I just told him I don't have to buy into this BS. So I'm glad yours is nice. Ours are bad so I go to other places in Orlando that have better prices, kinder people and a better attitude.
