  • In 1933 and 1934, the Protestant Church crafted two Confessions of faith. Those who signed their names to these confessions subscribed to their content and proclaimed to the Church and world that they held to what was stated. The Bethel Confession was authored by Lutheran theologians Herman Sasse and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. It condemned a number of beliefs of the Nazis and countered Antisemitism. It contained many references to scripture, the Lutheran Confessions and Martin Luther himself.
The Barmen Declaration was written in 1934 and was noticeably less sharp in its criticism of Nazi ideology. It was predominantly authored by Reformed theologian Karl Barth. More pastors signed the Barmen declaration because it was more widely circulated and presented a less controversial stance for its time.
In our study today, we compare the content of the two confessions.

How can someone read the full text of the Bethel Confessions (translated into English)?
