I'm in Rocky Mount, VA which is in Franklin Co. I was checking into my hotel today and I asked the front desk person what kind of history is around here. I had no idea I'm in the moonshine capital of the world. The lady was trying to explain it to me and she said "go watch Lawless on Prime". CRAZY!!!!
Outstanding movie. It touches every sphere of my passions: moonshining, the 1920's and 30s era, family unity, the "us against the world" attitude, and so much more. I bought the DVD and have watched it several times - I don't get tired of it.
David Gentry amen the illuminati and Freeman control this country and the government leaders time for the old ways too come back country boys will always be here and have always fought for this country God bless you and your family thank you
I'm from the Appalachia region (app-uh-latch-uh, if that tells you anything) just a few counties further southwest from the basis of this story. These folks around here generally want to be left alone. Most will give you the shirt off their back or give you something to eat, but cross them and you're staring down the barrel of a scatter gun.
I had no clue Nick Cave wrote this. I'm, clearly, late to the party. The writing, directing, cinematography, costumes, sets and acting of/in this film is nothing shy of astounding. Such an amazing, badass story and film. Salute to all who participated. Superb work.
I saw Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds at Lollapalooza in 1994 in Minneapolis. He always was different, always had his own kind of darkness to him. I didn't hear anything else about him until I heard him singing the theme song for the Peaky Blinders (awesome show btw). I had no idea he was involved with this movie.
There is a little confusion in this video. This happened in Virginia, not West Virginia. Also, there is a town called Franklin, and a county called Franklin. These two places are about 180 miles apart from each other. Franklin Co Virginia is where this took place.
I must admit, this is the first movie I've ever seen with Guy Pearce. He was absolutely phenomenal in his role. And it's cool to hear how much respect he had for all of his colleagues, particularly Tom Hardy. He seems like he'd be a blessing to work with in any project.

Kind of dark and brutal but you can't help but hope some of the charaters find a better way of life,....and then the credits start rolling and the theater lights go back on lol.

Shia Labeouf keeps saying West Virginia in his interview. Did he not read the script or the book ??!! It’s Franklin County VIRGINIA My hometown and dam proud of the movie !!! It should have gotten more credit than it did. This was during one of America’s worst times in history !
That is interesting! It is strange to hear names of places mentioned in the movie where I grew up, like Burnt Chimney, Maggodee Creek... I wonder why the young lady was a Mennonite, instead of German Baptist? We were surrounded by German Baptist farms. They make great neighbors! The supposed bridge is/ was two miles away from my childhood home. So much history here, and everywhere.

It is NOT West Virginia, not even close. Much closer to the North Carolina line rather than West Virginia. Did he go through the entire movie without a clue as to where the movie was set?
