Outstanding movie. It touches every sphere of my passions: moonshining, the 1920's and 30s era, family unity, the "us against the world" attitude, and so much more. I bought the DVD and have watched it several times - I don't get tired of it.
I had no clue Nick Cave wrote this. I'm, clearly, late to the party. The writing, directing, cinematography, costumes, sets and acting of/in this film is nothing shy of astounding. Such an amazing, badass story and film. Salute to all who participated. Superb work.

I'm from the Appalachia region (app-uh-latch-uh, if that tells you anything) just a few counties further southwest from the basis of this story. These folks around here generally want to be left alone. Most will give you the shirt off their back or give you something to eat, but cross them and you're staring down the barrel of a scatter gun.
I must admit, this is the first movie I've ever seen with Guy Pearce. He was absolutely phenomenal in his role. And it's cool to hear how much respect he had for all of his colleagues, particularly Tom Hardy. He seems like he'd be a blessing to work with in any project.
My great, great, great uncle, Henry Abshire, is the "Henry" deputy in this movie. No likeness rights paid. The County of Franklin, VA recently demolished his old house in Boones Mill, right next to Maggody Creek. This movie is mostly Hollywood, in the broad strokes. But this was real life. For a long time. And I'm proud of my family. I may be a rule follower and former public servant, but I'm not ashamed at all, and I love this movie. I knew nothing about this part of our family history until I brought this movie up at Thanksgiving a few years ago and my grandmother told me all about it. I was shocked and proud.

I think the real Bondurants looked more like Jason Clarke's image in this movie than like Shia and Tom. And nobody mentions Jason Clarke's performance. He's even missing on many posters of Lawless. He really did. I come from a family of Bondurants. I've met Matt's grandfather (Matt wrote the book this movie is based on). My father use to say, "If you want to know if a Bondurant lives in your city, check with the police department."...LOL
This movie was a lil insight to my childhood in the south. I watched the rest of the world modernize as my stepdads' family was frozen in that era of thinking. We used to bootleg booze to "dry counties" where the prohibition still loomes to this day.
