Clemson LB Isaiah Simmons is a freak of an athlete. Someone as big as he is shouldn’t be as fast as he is. Simmons is a converted safety & has bulked up while maintaining his electric speed. Clemson’s defense lost a lot of talent after last year’s National Championship, but Simmons did his best to not make it seem like there was any dropoff.
Simmons is a hard hitter who is so quick when making plays in the backfield. QBs always have to be aware of where No. 11 is at all times. Because of his safety background, Simmons is able to drop back into coverage & defend the pass if needed. There’s a reason why NFL scouts love Simmons as a prospect. Simmons ran an incredibly fast 40 yard dash at the combine & proved that he really is an incredible athlete.

He's the most dynamic pass-rushing, pure LB since Von Miller came out. But he's more than Miller. *(More, not better.)* He's unbelievably fast, has a huge punch to get to the QB, can cover anyone on the field and still be a traditional MIKE, too. Just insane. I love Brown, but I think I'd pick Simmons before Brown, especially since Kinlaw may be better than him. He shouldn't escape the Top 5, unless people trade up for QBs like Tua and Herbert (obviously, Burrow goes #1 overall). Being the third best player in the draft, behind Young and Burrow, respectively, means he won't last long. As a diehard Eagles fan, I'd hate to see him go to the Giants, but I just don't know how they could pass him up. Yes, Okudah is amazing, but Simmons is beyond dynamic. Unless Okudah is the second coming of Patrick Peterson, I really think it goes 1. Young 1A. Burrow 3. Simmons 4. Okudah, but it is close -- just depends on what a certain team needs/wants. I do simulated drafts for fun, and one had Simmons fall to me (21 is the Eagles pick). I never laugh out loud when I'm by myself, except for that instance. Yes, there are great OL, DL, WR and Okudah, but Simmons is incredible. I'd bet all the money I have (not wealthy, but a good amount) he doesn't escape the Top 7. And if no one trades up for Tua or Herbert, he's a lock for the Top 3-5.

Clemson LB Isaiah Simmons is a freak of an athlete. Someone his size shouldn’t be as fast as he is. No defender in college football gets to the ball carrier in the backfield quicker than Simmons. On the year, Simmons had 104 tackles, 16.5 TFL, 8 Sacks, 3 INT & 2 FF, which is why he won this year’s Butkus Award.

His pass rush reminds me of Arden Key at LSU, but this guy can play multiple positions so he will no doubt be a better overall player at the next level. In the right system he could be the best defender coming out this year and that includes Chase Young.
Frank V he’ll be good no matter what but he’ll definitely be better with a defensive coordinator who actually knows how to utilize his versatility

Lol. Sorry to laugh, but Simmons is infinitely better and more valuable than... Arden Key. I know you hedge and mitigate what you said in the first sentence. But c'mon, man. Simmons is the best pure LB/S/EDGE I've ever seen, aside from Von Miller coming out. You need a sack/pressure? Ok, I can do that. You need me to cover an elite TE and many slot WRs? Can do that too. Oh, and you want me to slide back in coverage on 3rd-and-long to be in zone coverage and be in perfect position? Yep, I can do that too. Sorry, but Arden Key could never do any of those major things. And while 40 times are usually overstated, him running sub-4.4 makes him too good to pass up. Love Okudah, but I'm taking Simmons over him every day of the week. Would take him over Brown too. Especially since a team looking for a great Di/DT can trade down a few slots for Kinlaw, of whom may be better than Brown altogether. Just don't think anyone would regard Key in the same stratosphere as Simmons, especially when picking in the Top 5 and looking for an unreal playmaker (vis a vie in this deep draft, where elite WRs can be had in the early second-round, too).
Quick comment: Love, love, love Simmons, as I just mentioned in my rather verbose/long post above. Having said that, as much as I'd die to have Simmons on my team, Young is the better prospect for every team -- even those which strictly play 3-4. Young will be better than Clowney, and possibly/likely the Watt and Bosa brothers. He's so immensely talented and explosive, there's a reason he's the consensus top overall prospect -- even with an elite QB coming out. As an Eagles fan, I hate this situation because when the Skins take Young, their D-Line will be as good or possibly better than the Birds. And if/when the G-men take Simmons, he can transform their entire D. Which is why I'm happy we were rewarded one compensatory third-round pick and two comp. fourth-rounders, to either stack up on talent or (more likely) trade up for a WR, especially if one of Lamb, Jeudy or Ruggs fall past, say, Pick 15 or so.

Isaiah Simmons is pretty much the perfect prototype example of the hybrid position existing in defenses today that is essentially the modern evolution of the position formerly known as "WILL" or weakside linebacker. The days of the 4-3 or 3-4 base defense are long gone, granted they are still an important package to have in your defense, but the base defense in the NFL is now a hybridization between a 4-2-5 Nickel and a 4-1-6 Dime defense...now many teams might run this defense with one or both of the EDGE rushers standing up, technically making them OLB (the original "hybrid" defender -> pass rushing outside linebacker), and the nickel player might be listed as a Safety (Tyrann Matheau) or as a CB (Jonathan Jones) but we have all pretty much accepted that the SAM LB position has evolved into a 5th defensive back "hybrid" position that we call "slot" or "nickel." The third "hybrid" is that second linebacker position. It might still be called "WILL" still , or "$ - Money backer" or "Dime" but it's essentially the evolution of the WILL linebacker position into a Linebacker/Safety/Slot hybrid. Think of Mark Barron on the steelers, Matt Milano for the Bills, Jayon Brown Titans, Jerome Baker Dolphins, Darius Leonard Colts, Drue Tranquill Chargers, these are some examples around the league.
This new version of the WILL is a really important position in today's game, and one that a lot of offensive coordinators love to attack (sometimes called the "conflict player") because they have are typically the only defender with both a run-fit (weak side B-Gap) AND a cover down (weak-side #2 -> a Tight End or Slot Receiver). With a player like Isaiah Simmons, a Defensive Coordinator doesn't have to worry about substituting between his nickel and dime packages, as Simmons projects to be simultaneously a legitimate, between the tackles, run-plugging 238 LB NFL inside Linebacker AND an explosively fast (

This is exactly the type of LB/S hybrid that defenses need to combat todays more exotic offenses. play him in base, nickel, dime, move him around the field, cover the slot, TE, back, blitz, rush, spy while also not sacrificing on the run. Defenses are going to be trying to find more and more of these hybrid type players, trouble is, there aren't many. He's gonna be most important player on his teams defense in 2 years time.

Yo honestly his best trait is the closing speed, look at some of the tol,he start10-15 yards back and makes play behind line, given nfl qbs get rid of ball faster but still it shows his speed translates to his game, also when he tackles he actually wraps up and grabs people he doesn’t just throw his shoulder at them, that’s how u miss tackles and get hurt
