As a Portuguese Canadian and very fluent with the language and music, she does the most wonderful justice to this song. FADO is the soul of Portugal! One does not only sing Fado, one needs to FEEL it.

Yes, we *don't* know much about music from other countries in the US. It's really a shame, as we miss out on so much. I am a fan of some longtime fadistas + younger singers like Mariza and Antonio Zambujo. (Although my favorite songs with Portugues lyrics are from Basil, the Cape Verde Islands, etc.)
I somehow missed this release when it 1st came out, and I'm happily surprised by her performance!

I'm really impressed KD can pronounce so well those nasal sounds. The English language doesn't have them, so Anglo-Saxons typically can't roll their tongues around them. Beautiful rendition of this song, thank you!

Amazing! k d could sing in any language and I would know it is her! I'd recognize her voice because she is one of a kind...best singer on the planet! Just beautiful and so is she! Ah Fadista! KD Lang has one of the most beautiful voices in the world and she sang this Fado like a true fadista, full of emotion, nostalgia and feeling.
Yes, saudades! (And I'm a native speaker of English.) I bet she would sound great singing some of the "lighter" types of fados, the kind that Amalia Rodrigues' sister (sorry, i can't remember her name right now) recorded and performed.

When I first heard this song, I couldn't believe kd lang wasn't Portuguese. Her accent gave it away, true, but her performance is so intensely fadista. In fact, it's better than any fadista I ever heard in any fado bar in Mouraria or Alfama or Bairro Alto in Lisbon. Even Amalia Rodrigues would break down and cry. Congratulations, kd. You are a damn fine Canadian and with this song, you sing with Portuguese soul.
She's not just a singer; she's also an inate, inborn actress, which she always combines with her singing. She's not a Hollywood actress because she really means it when she performs as herself...she is MAGNIFICANT!
That must have been incredibly difficult singing in a different language. I don't know Portuguese but you definately hit this out of the park. Beautifully done KD!

@mascote1253 Very true! Lack of exposure. Same thing in Canada on mainstream radio stations. I listened to world music on Radio Canada and discovered Buika there, but you really have to seek the discerning radio stations. :) All a case of marketing too, isn't it? European artists seem to be less aggressive than N. American. Maria João, I'd really love to see her have more exposure, but the question is, does she want it? ;)

You may have a nice voice but fado de Coimbra is a sexist song so is not made to be singed by a woman. You should understand the tradition of a university kind of sonh with more than 500 year.. nice voice but not the this. sorry.
Amália recorded fado de Coimbra and she was supposedly breaking with tradition or wasn't she? Besides, some "traditions" evolve in case you haven't been in (or to) Coimbra lately (academically). They even have women students now. In fact most of the students are women and a fair share of the Professors as well. Big break with tradition that one. Ever wondered why Coimbra fado is/was traditionally sung by men? That's right: no women students when this traditional genre was invented as long ago as the XIXth century. When the University was already over 500 years old...
So can we agree at least that Lang's voice is a pleasure to listen to? She stuck to traditional arrangements and way of singing as well. I would have changed it a bit myself but hey it's still a great melody.
