Yup, I have four, the elderly man at the fle market that repairs axe's, shovels and pic axes passes away. I went to see him at his table for thirty years, God rest his soul. Thanks for sharing I will try to fix mine now.
Hello ..I have. 2 shovels..I rake I want to repair.I have also. been looking for a place to fix them. I never thought of the flea market,am sorry the man passed away. So now what are you gonna do? Thank you, Gwen
A Man and His Shovel. Sounds like bestseller. Love learning new things. Glad you have your old friend back. Thanks for sharing your skills...and memories.
My grandmother and mother used to say "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without." There's something that feels good about fixing something rather than replacing it. Thanks for making that possible for more of us!
Trusty Rusty. Love it. Nice work! It’s amazing how many people out there don’t realize that many times something is actually repairable and doesn’t need to be thrown away.
Someone along the line told me to get a 5 gallon bucket, fill it 3/4 with sand and pour vegetable oil in to the sane till the sand was damp (one average bottle seemed enough). Then ever time I went to use a shove push the blade into the sand as deep as I could, when I was done using the shove wash it off and push the blade in the sand again and hang it up. The sand and oil clean and coat the blade, lessens rust, and keeps the shove blade clean. Works for any rough hand tool you put in the ground.
Nice job fitting that to the tool! I am prettty hard on handles and usally replace them with 4 ft Steel pipes from H-D or Lowe's. A little rigging to attatch it and one less worry when applying pressure for this old gal! lol I did reuse an old oak handle on a flat edge shovel today but it turns out that it isn't the right tool for the job I needed but it looks great and probably will be handy removing the roof shingles soon!
I lost my Dad when he was 68 years old. I have his old work hammer that I've used for small projects around my house. I've treasured that hammer for the past 16 years!
Very ood presentation and practical fix without spending more than a new handle is worth. Can buy a new shovel for the price of a new handle. Just broke my garden shovel which are etting more difficult to find. Thanks.
This couldn't be more perfect timing! I have two gardening pitch work style implements and a shovel all with broken handles I bought new wood handles cannot figure out how to get the freaking chunks of wood out of the implements!!! I was about ready to throw them in the burn barrel figuring the metal would be a little rusty but I'm using it to dig in the yard anyway so 🤣
Thanks for the steps sir!!! just finished fixing a cracked wood shovel i had. 1. used chisel and hammer for the pin. 2. used mallet to take handle off. 3. jigsaw to cut the cracked part of wood off. 4. shaved wood end with folding knife holding it in my lap. 5. used mallet hammer it in and hit the end on the driveway for a bit more.. 5. screw in 2 small stainless steel wood screw WORKS GREAT FOR A SHORT SHOVEL!!! HAHA!
After watching your video I had to try it for myself 😳 and after about an hour I had made my old shovel come back to life 🥳 Thanks for the inspiration 🤩
Have you ever heard of or seen a shovel helper? Saw a video way back when, but cannot find it now. It is a 90° angle metal bar that fits close to the blade. Step on it to drive farther into soil. Would greatly help me unearth all the junk weeds infesting my yard. House was a rental for years and all they ever did was mow the weeds in place. Have a hat fork and pitch fork to uproot the junk, but as there is very little top soil I soon run into the "Missouri" rocks in short order.
I used a stainless steel screw, 2 stainless nuts, and some thread lock. It came out a bit ugly so I painted. My new handle was 25 dollars. Now it's heavy and in good condition. Thanks
So now that you have finished your bathroom. Is there anything you feel you could have done differently. Are there any future upgrades to your bathroom you plan on doing? Do you like your bathroom now that some time has passed?
You should've belt sanded the whole handle therish....😀 also sharpen the edges of the shovel. I prefer old shovels than the new ones they sell now. Good advice brother.👍
My husband buys cheap brooms that bend and my kids constantly break it. Can I fix that as I cannot sweep with a low broom as my lower back hurts too much.
Thank you👍, BUT YOU FORGOT THAT ALL-GRAINS GO FACING UP, so it does not brake again. NOTE: the reason not to use screws is because vibrations unscrew all screws (physics 101)
The shovel handles usually break exactly where the screws are, because screws weaken the handle, so I would recommend using short and thin screws, they don't to other thing than avoid the handle come off.
If you look at old school shovels, the wood goes all the way through, just below the steel. Your shovel is going to bend the way you did it the first time you dig with it. New shovels do what you did. The wood must go all the way through or it will fail. My father taught me a few things that I actually paid attention to and quality tools is one of the things he taught me about.
my dad is trying to fix a shovel but when he try to get the handle out it broke now the pice of wood is stuck in their but the shovel is one way so he cant hammer it out because it will just get it more stuck can you help my dad please? because we tried everything we tried to burn it we tried to saw it out and hammer it out nothing worked
I broke my shovel last week. After looking at the broken handle, it is NOT worth fixing so I will look for a better handle. It was claimed to be "hardwood" but it is not. It is some kind of el cheapo handle. I wish I could find a GOOD hickory SHOVEL handle for a long shovel.

What an adorable video. Thank you for all the details. I'm going to try to fix my own Trusty Rusty. It's got a story as well.
Perfect! Exactly what I needed to know😊😊
Yes, prefer to save money than buy new.
Thank you
I have some of my grandfather's tools, who was also an engineer like me. I will always cherish those.
I love your videos . These simple "fixers" are priceless. I like the older tools. They were made to last. Thank you

Lol the campfire sound effects. You’re in a cheeky mood today!
😁 Trying to have some fun with you guys! Trying to teach what I know, sometimes I try to be “the cool teacher” thanks for watching!
I have watched all your videos and learned some tricks along the way. Thanks so much.
Awesome to hear! Thank you!
Nice vid. An additional step I'd like to do is oil the wood with used motor oil. Makes the handle last must longer!

You're a genuinely likeable chap. A good solid video and I now know tomorrow's task for myself. Thank you kindly for making this video
I love watching this bloke he's so interesting
Thanks, Mike! 😁👍
When I organized my tools, I realized that several were "borrowed" from my dad's tool box. Sentimental value is amped up as he passed at 98 years old.
So sorry for your loss.

Great !!! It´s so simple but always better when you see exactly how to do it !!!
God blesses you !!!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much! Great workshop, presentation and video.
I love this channel 👏🏻 in your intro when the word ‘fixer’ fixes and makes that noise, my dog barks every time 😂
Haha sounds like my dog when a car drives by, or the wind blows, or a pin drops or it’s just too silent 🤣 thanks for watching! Really appreciate it!

Another great video that even had a sick dad joke in it. 🤣. Glad trusty rusty is back in service.
Haha thanks, Jim! 😁😁
Thanks for another great video...always learn something interesting from you!
Great to hear, Jim! Thanks!
Thanks so much! This helped me a lot!
This woman thanks you!
Oh thankfully I found this video before my husband gets home and sees that I broke the shovel 😂😂😂😂THANK YOU
Omg the sad music at 0:18 😂😂😂 That’s just funny!
Haha 😂 happy you enjoyed that. 😁 Thanks for watching!
Great job 👏 😊

Thank you for this. You have made my day easier as I JUST broke my saw lol
Well I’m sorry to hear that but I hope the video helps!
@@TheFixerHomeRepair not saw! I meant shovel! Lol
Disassembling mine now and mine has nails in it. Thanks for the instruction. You saved me $ that I dont have at the moment.
Great channel.
I year later, the shovel still holding up? How many holes you dug with it so far?
Very nice job!👍👏👏❤️😊
Thanks, Carrie! And thanks for checking out the video!
@@TheFixerHomeRepair ☺️👍
Love your videos
Love your comments. 😁🤣
The nail came out of my rake, so the handle comes off. Can replace it with a screw, like yours? Or if I replace it with a nail, what size?
Never too sentimental. 🙂
That's the best way to "Handle it" 😂😂
Can I use a closet rod to make a new shovel handle?
i love how your pinned video is fixing a shovel instead of say, the videos of you literally raising the foundation of a house lol
Haha what can I say… I love that shovel! 😁😁
Good tip! Thanks!
No problem. Thanks for checking it out!

🤷🏻♂️ We will see I guess. Thanks for the feedback.
Yes!! First 😅
😁 Nailed it!
Is it sacrilege to use a shovel to dig a hole to bury another shovel?
Lol!
Haha 🤔
My fav part is when he said 3:07
I got all that beat. I've use old metal fence post a drill and screw into shovel. It'll last forever.
I have a couple of shovels over 40 years old, and have the original handles. The new ones are not as good in the handles.
Looks like the grain direction is off by 90°
wonderful video, but way way way too much work for a handle! Love the ideas
But i love my shovel 😂
Yes!! Second
Rivet rivet 🐸
Haha
my dad is trying to fix a shovel but when he try to get the handle out it broke now the pice of wood is stuck in their but the shovel is one way so he cant hammer it out because it will just get it more stuck can you help my dad please? because we tried everything we tried to burn it we tried to saw it out and hammer it out nothing worked
Did you try to drill it and chisel it out, little bits at a time?
👍👍👍👍👍
In this video ... gonna show you how to repair a shovel and use that shovel to bury your nosy neighbors ... and we are going to do this ... RIGHT NOW
🤙
👍
Not the 😔 somber music 🎶 😅😅😅
😁😁
instructions: use a smal stick to get out the big stick, stick is now out so use an even smaller stick to get out the small stick.😂
😂😂 Yeah pretty much.
I thought it would be a rivet. I guess nails make more sense in some ways.
This is great. Shovels went from $40 to $80 since the pandemic...
My issue with my husband is that he’s saved the heads, but not the broken handles.
I think they sell replacement handles.

Handle is shorter now?? That's not so good. I would have slathered on a bunch of gorilla glue and would never come apart.
🤙🏾🤗
😢
A broken shovel I'm upset because I got my shovel
new/old handle lol
I,ve never even held a shovel before so no i don't care.
Nice fire sounds while you were whitling :)
