A great example of how to sing about a past relationship in a classy, respectful way. I think a lot of artists should take note.
The guitar break fills me with so much nostalgia.
Oh shit. This is amazing. "Was I in your way?" is such a powerful line. Almost in tears.
Sadness hides in a happy rhythm
These new songs are so therapeutic for me. I have been a Death Cab fan for a long time and ever since I went to their concert with my ex-boyfriend, I hadn't been able to listen to their music without some pain, remembering our relationship. This new stuff is perfect for my fresh start, to give me something to look ahead with. Their music just knows how to penetrate my soul.
I am so in love with this song. Ben really let his emotions flow through. Excellent work. Can't wait to see them live. 💜💜💜

Melvin Marshall Good talk. Glad we had it.
I'm seeing him too!!!!😄😄
I'm seeing them in Berkeley, CA! :D
Maryland. 💜🌈✌
My fondness for most bands fluctuates but the affection I have for Death Cab for Cutie has remained high ever since I discovered them. I hope they never stop making music!
god i feel like people will scream "IS THIS ABOUT ZOOEY" for every song on the album
but this one is definitely about her
+Optical Rain Haha, same.
Lmao yeah this is the only song of theirs I ever heard and immediately thought this has to be about Zooey lol.
Everything in the album was about Zooey. He mentioned it in an episode of Song Exploder featuring the song El Dorado.
This song is the most beautiful breakup song I have ever heard. I wish I was this gifted to be able to express my soul in such a simple and straightforward way.
I absolutely love the lines "how can I stay in the sun when the rain flows all through my veins?" and "we'll both go on to get lonely with somebody else". I think I can relate to the person that Ben is.
He is such a good poet
I think it’s double meaning is born a reference to his being with Zooey in sunny California and his home/place of origin in the rainy Washington sorta/kinda Seattle suburby kinda Pacific NW area as well as the contrasted lifestyles that came with her being a famous actress and all the (largely superficial, often excessively smiley lol) Hollywood horseshit that comes with it which of course as a Pacific NW rock/indie music scene kind of fellow he would find deeply distasteful, also the fact that his disposition is obviously a bit more towards the morose than hers. All speculation by me lol. Regardless, it’s great stuff and why Ben has stood and will continue stand the test of time.
Astounded by this guy's capability to say something so abruptly and painfully in a quiet and kind way. Doesn't seem vindictive--seems retrospective and disappointed. This is a dying art in the world because artists seem to feel like they need to say that one thing that takes it too far lyrically these days. This is balanced, true to the author, gets the point across, and is tasteful.
Couldn’t agree more!
very well said
Exactly. He manages to hover just above self-pity and convey this somehow on the upbeat side of wistful. Remarkable.
Truly an art
Yes, a very diplomatic lyric. Some people just OWN that sort of humility and quiet candor. My Mother was the Queen of double-edged diplomacy. It would appear she was paying you a compliment, but she was also imparting you with a little learning experience and some stern humility. ELEGANCE in wordsmith skills. Many people could stand to learn FAR more helpful and positive ways of communicating. A thought😁
I love how the video shows the journey from the dry California valley back to the rainy Pacific Northwest. Sorry you had to go through all that, Ben... but boy, you can sure write some great songs from the pain. Can't wait to get my new Kintsugi record. Welcome home, Mr. Gibbard. See you in October.
That valley is only dry because fucking SoCal steals all the water! It's naturally one of the largest wetlands on Earth.
I have so much respect for how personal his songs are. It feels like he writes music to vent out his emotions. Meanwhile, others are thinking of how to make "good" songs first. Love this album.
Zooey is from California and Ben from Seattle
"How can I stay in the sun when the rain flows all through my viens"
A guy like him might feel dragged along and feel like an add on...favorite Dcfc song
Love this song and the style of the lyric video.
Just because codes and keys had more of an "upbeat" vibe doesn't mean it's a "happy" record... If you listen carefully to the lyrics of most of the record, it almost sounds like he's hinting a lot of marriage problems and hinting the foreseen future. Either way, you can tell in this song he's still bitter about the situation and giving us all the DCFC we all want.. But I'm ok with however they try to express themselves even if it does mean "upbeat" as long as it's real and the truth. (Death Cab seems to be the only band to never stop doing so) Cheers to the greatest songwriter of our generation. (Chris will always be missed.) And as always, can't wait for this record.
Exactly! I never thought that codes and keys was a happy album-it had an almost wistful, bittersweet sort of vibe to it
That's such a magical quality for a songwriter -- carefully balancing an "upbeat" vibe with serious, thoughtful lyrics.
WHENEVER I FEEL DOWN I JUST LISTEN TO YOUR SONGS AND I FEEL SO ALIVE AGAIN KEEP MAKING MUSIC THE WORLD NEEDS MORE MUSIC LIKE THIS
The driverless car combined with occasional glimpses of views from the rear-view mirror call to my mind those relationships in our lives that have come and gone and how at the end of the day, so many of us are left to drive the rest of that highway alone (if only, for a spell). Beautiful song, heartfelt lyrics! Love it!
2:40
"And I guess it's not a failure we could help.
And we'll both go on to get lonely with someone else."
Devastatingly beautiful.
"Was I in your way when the cameras turned to face you?" Wow, is that ever powerful stuff.
I can't wait any longer, I need this record in my Goddamn hands! I have a feeling, "Kintsugi" already going to be one of my fave records of 2015.
My favorite line is “I guess that’s not a failure we could help.”
Feels like a dream, a mix of sad and happy, gradually conquering your soul. Great track!
Whilst I loved codes and keys, I feel like this song really shows death cab back to their best. Love it
perfect! they should totally open every show with that
I came here just to read all the funny comments about this song being about Zooey. To be honest, I only heard this song (I have yet really gone through Kitsunagi at the time) when Ben opened with this song at the HK show in their Asia Tour 3 weeks ago, and after really listening to this, I was all "....Oh :(".
I wonder if "Little Wanderer" was also about Zooey. It's alright Ben, I too know what it's like being not able to fit into someones life, that's why this song really speaks to me.
Besides all this, I also came here to express how much that show has changed my life. I've been listening to DCFC since I was 12 (admittedly because of the OC), and I'm 26 now.. each of the songs have a memory of me growing up embedded into them hence why watching the show was so personal to me. Thank you for the music
Christine R same here , Oc was what brought me to this amazing band , and their music became the sound track to parts of my life , whether bad or good and you Can always listen and smile
This song is absolutely beautiful
+Joshua Aguayo i liked the performance of it on tiny desk alot but for some reason that video got took down
as a person who was born & raised in Northern California then moved to Southern, that highway lives in my mind as well, I was driving back home and this song came on as I was passing through Coalinga. It was a weird coincidence but it’s crazy we share that tiny connection
Kintsugi is Death Cab's new album. Some say Codes and Keys, the album released when Ben was married, was upbeat and such because he was married. This album, Kintsugi, deals with a lot of emotion following his divorce and not just that--the departure of Walla. In a way, Ben and Death Cab is trying to fix themselves up.
Kintsugi (金継ぎ ?) (Japanese: golden joinery) or Kintsukuroi (金繕い ?) (Japanese: golden repair) is the Japanese art of fixing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum, a method similar to the maki-e technique.
This song always makes my day. Great song.
The production and textures are astounding. His voice is so simple but so affective.Just started listening to these guys cause I'm an older musical enthusiast and don't think anything newer is worth listening to but was i ever wrong about these guys.Listened to 7 or 8 of their songs and have enjoyed every one of them.
The lyrics the beat is all so beautifu! thank you DCFC for the amazing music! ❤❤
18 years, and the music is still great.
Seeing them tonight in Raleigh, NC - Excited!
Beautiful song and evenly beautiful video. Love this and cannot wait for the record to arrive at the door step
2:55 - 3:08 - i wish that riff had been developed more in this song, repeated for like 3 or 4 minutes like the riff in Transatlanticism.
scottysols I agree. It's one of the best bits of the song.
Cannot wait to see you guys this saturday! Berkeley is sending their love!
“…and we both go on to be lonely with someone else” this is such a beautiful and powerful sentence. It’s so true in so many senses when you lose the love of your life and you know you will never get her back
Been a HUGE DCFC fan since the very beginning before they were even on the map. This new CD is only a testament to their desire to produce passionate and meaningful music. They're as much poets as they are musicians. Can't wait to get a copy of this one!
This song makes me SO excited for the new album, I hope there will be a lot more like this one ♥
This is most likely the best song Death Cab for Cutie ever made. Fantastic!
Been waiting for this one ever since I heard the live version, and it did NOT disappoint! So good!!
I had no idea they were bringing out a new album. I had forgotten about this band for like 3 years. This song is so good !!
I can't stop listening to this :)
Death Cab's music holds SO much emotion that the songs themselves become living entities. Like, I am in LOVE with this song.
The beat of this song is so happy, but the lyrics are so sad and i don't know what to feel
Death Cab For Cutie never seizes to amaze me. Been listening to them since their Plans days. I want to take a moment to shout out to the band that helped me through a not-so-easy childhood. They will forever be my heroes. Love you guys so much. Death Cab For Cutie
ahhh I just want to listen to the sound at the beginning on repeat forever!!!!!
The sound before the beep beep beeeeeeep?
+Olive Busson yeah before the singing altough it continues playing after
Mr. Lichie volcano choir does some stuff kinda like that
Josiah Wilson
Thanks!
Words can't describe how much I love Ben's voice. 'Kintsugi' is going to be amazing.
If black sun wasn't enough to make you think this album was about his split with zooey, then this should solidify it. Amazing work as usual. Ben is a true artist in the way he captures his emotions in his music. Can't wait to see them live in April and to hear the rest of the album!
I love how often this song pops into my mind. Amazing tune, so appreciative of death cab
I'm obsessed with this song
I love the lyrical imagery and the gorgeous guitar. It's a sad but beautiful song
Not many album openers can be like New Year or Marching Bands, but the lyrical content and signature DCFC melancholy of this one makes up not having that instant BAM if anyone knows what i mean.
Beautiful tune and video 😊❤️🎶🎼
I saw this song performed live, and it was amazing
Can't wait to see in you in Vegas tomorrow night!! It's been too long.
Excellent Death Cab For Cutie vibe in this one.
Beautifully designed.
Catchy song with great lyrics.
oh boy, you gotta stop making my heart flutter. i hate going through this again. because there's no escaping anymore.
9 years later and this song still kills me huhuhuhuhu
Seems like everyone is hell bent on dissecting the lyrics of his songs and disagreeing with anyone else's interpretations that don't coincide with their own. Music is what it is, an expression of ones thoughts. There's no right or wrong meanings, just enjoy it and allow it to mean whatever you want it to regardless of anyone else's thoughts ;)
AHHH I'm so excited I'm going ro their concert in like an hour
DCFC is the greatest band in the entire world. ❤️
i love this song, remids me the old DCFC
Just simply beautiful as always.
They never disappoint.
Love it, love it, love it. And, ehm, thank you for the music Zooey...
A beautiful Song full of passion and Emotion I really enjoy listen to and sing along with him.
Currently in love with this song.
I've got this playlist on repeat, and it's making me wiser.
I had to hear this after hearing the Tiny Desk version. I do think I prefer the other, but this is still amazing. The lyrics are incredible!
A lot of the vocals on the album do sound *exactly* like the NPR Tiny Desk recordings. I wonder if they used them, or if they're just very consistent.
the tiny desk version is slower, but also I'm pretty sure it's just their singer being consistent :)
Thank you my family enjoy this song! My little son was even dancing! I have never heard this Death Cab for Curly before but this man's voice sound like strawberries and Cool Whip! Thank you Curly!
strawberries and cool whip hahaha. Curly.
Death Cab for *Cutie
"was I in your way?..." took my heart away
Ugh, I can't wait for this album! This song's so beautiful. :)
Sloop Splattums You're on this video... Gravity Falls profile pic... yup. You have amazing taste in everything :)
The more I listen to this album, the more I fall in love with it.
my heart breaks a little when he sings - Was I in your way?
His voice + a simple line like that is just amazing.
One of their best albums all the way through. Period.
This has been up for 2 days and already almost has 100,000 views. WAY TO GO DEATH CAB! I love you guys, awesome song :)
I can't stop listening to this
This is so beautiful and sad! Kintsugi is gonna be a great album!
Death Cab has been my favorite band for the last 10 years, no other band will get you through lonely times like this one will, Ben will always be one of the best lyricists to ever walk the face of the earth no matter what he does, and this album is fantastic the more you listen to it. It came along at a perfect time for me, just like Transatlanticism or Plans, this is what they think you need to be hearing right now. Just listen to it.
This is the best song I've heard in years. Sorry about the break up. But if it's producing art like this I feel bad admitting I am grateful for it.
this is so good omg i love it so much
Damn! I can't wait for the entire album.
Great song
I love how the video style is so similar to Grapevine fires, and Meet me on the equinox.
Is this about Walla feeling overshadowed by Gibbard, and Ben recognizing that?
"Was I in your way when the cameras turned to face you?"
That's not about Zooey, she's always been more popular than Gibbard (for some stupid reason). I think this is a song about the departure of Chris Walla to some extent and that makes me sad.
Also, Ben remarks about this track that "Coalinga" from the song is a place the band's van broke down, if he's reminiscing about the band it further points to this song being about Walla. Plus the Walla-ish guitar licks throughout, starting right after Ben concludes the first chorus...
Just a thought. I don't feel like he's too hung up on Zooey. He's known Walla for way longer and this is probably almost as rough for him as breaking up with his wife of one year was.
I don't think Ben will read this but if he does, sorry for psycho-analyzing you, I hate it when people do that to me haha. I just felt like people were getting it wrong.
I know! That's why I originally thought this.
I like the connection you're making with the Coalinga reference, although it also could be extrapolated to express a point at which a relationship breaks down, rather than being taken so literally. But more importantly, in your interpretation, how do you account for the line, "We'll both go on to get lonely with someone else"?
The position of this line at the end of the breakdown and at the end of the song gives it tremendous weight, and I find it hard to reconcile in the context of one band member leaving.
No. It is about Zooey
I think I'm a DCFC fan living under a rock. I had no idea that Walla was departing.... WHAAAT. It will never be the same without him! He is a star. And I initially thought this song was about Zooey. But since learning this information about Chris, I'm more inclined to agree with you.
right in the feels
Ugh. This hurts my heart. So beautiful.
Beautiful song, love it
Awesome Chorus! Awesome job guys.
This is amazing. Thank you
Awesome song and video, love it!
I think this is my favourite song from the album so far.
holy shit.... this is why I love this band.
One of their best songs.... then again all of their songs are the "best"
I forgot how great this song is. Wow!
This song reminds me of 'Brothers on a hotel bed', 'you're a tourist' and 'tiny vessels'. All these songs talk about moving on and the bittersweet end of a relationship. I'm not really sure if Gibbard is talking about Zoey or Walla, but either way, this song is really nostalgic and sentimental.
