People are giving you shit in these comments but it’s super refreshing to see a review from someone who hasn’t been 100%ing this game for 20+ years. As a kid we couldn’t just google how to complete a level- I figured out most of the difficult stars either talking to my friends hoping somebody knew what they were doing, or flipping through a $30 guide at Best Buy because my parents sure as hell weren’t going to buy it. Your experience feels more like that than yet another retrospective from a speed runner.
Yeah for sure. I'm still pretty young and I sure as hell can't relate to you guys but when he put Pyramid Puzzle at 117 I actually thought it was a really good take. How in the world are you supposed to even know where those 5 coins are!?!?
When I got this I think it took me about a year to collect all 120 stars and I thought it was so hard. Now there are people that can collect like 120 stars in 2 hours, blind folded. It just breaks the heart. 💔🤣
you're right, toad does tell you about the tick tock clock gimmick, however he doesn't say what number does what, he just tells you to watch the minute hand. ngl toad's dialogue here seems to be very overlooked imo. people probably only care for this toad because he gives you a star, which just sounds sad lol
Given your footage i would say you struggled with the wing cap mission because you went clockwise rather than counter clockwise. The coins are layed out in a spiral pattern tarting at the highest point on the right so all you need to do is follow the coin path down and it should be much simpler to do. You might be shocked to learn that you can climb on the big penguins head.
Thank you so much for ranking Watch for Rolling Rocks so low. As a kid, I was stuck for ages and ages on 118 stars and just hadn't a clue where the star was hidden. You nailed it. Interestingly though the other star I was stuck on as a kid was Blast Away The Wall, which you did rank quite highly. I feel like that one is the same.
3:30 for snowman's big head, a tip is to just jump and get on top of the penguins head and then you can just wait until he's all the way across and then jump off. That's actually how I always did it. Another way I think is to just go unlock the cannon first and then use the cannon to get on top of his head. 9:05 for Blast to the Lonely Mushroom, you can either long jump off the log or jump on top of the fly guy next to the log and then float down to it. 13:55 Red Hot Log Rolling you can actually get easier by using the wing cap, or if you have enough health, just long jump to the star, you'll have to hit the Lava once though.
I think people say Wet Dry World is creepy because, especially in the town portion, a liminal space and likely one of the first kids in the mid 90s experienced in a video game.
Whats funny about the Manta Rays Reward is that its actually super punishing. If you dont get all the rings on the first try, which its also really glitchy sometimes, the game kind of locks you from trying again until you reenter the world
@@DoubleE5135 Shifting Sand Land I understand, but, Hazy Maze Cave is objectively one of the best levels in the game design-wise. It's either you love it with all of your burning passion, or you hate it with all of your burning passion.
@@Lucassaur0I didn’t know this growing up either 😭 it’s so much easier to just jump on its head. To me, it makes more sense that you’d have to hide behind the penguin - it just seems like the “right” way to solve the puzzle considering the penguin goes back and forth. Jumping on the head just seems to easy for it to be the intended way, but it is!
The trick for circling the stumps is given by a sign in THI, if I recall correctly. Probably the one on the island with the post in big world, so still much farther out of the way than it should be XD.
Finally someone agrees with me about what star is the best! That one at no.1 was always epic for me plus I love how it makes you think and strategise plus ultimately, feels like a great achievement once you get it
I will never forget finally getting all 120 stars when I was in high school. Back when the internet was almost nonexistent and I had to figure it out mostly on my own. Oh, and you’ve probably been told this multiple times, but you can actually stand on the big penguin’s head to get by the snowman’s breath. I learned that maybe a couple years after completing the 120 stars myself, so don’t blame you for not knowing
i've never liked tiny huge island because traversing the course in both the small and big versions is a chore. mario's too slippery for the tiny island and the bottom floor of the huge island isn't fun to travel through at all. a highlight (or ig lowlight) for me is when i kept failing the pluck the piranha flower star because i kept accidentally doing a dive off the ledge and getting back to that platform takes so long that it's faster to just kill mario and start over. now whenever i try to replay the game i always skip the world lol
I would place DDD 100 coins lower, because most casual players don't know that DDD only has 102 total,so if 3 of those coins despawn,You are forced to exit course to try again
So, I always had trouble with Stomp the Thwomp in Tik Tok Clock, because I always stopped time. I just always entered the clock at 12 for some reason, so the inner mechanics were never moving and I had no idea they could.
Ehm, for the wing cap, go right, not left, and follow the coins. Snowman, well, I solve this by jumping over the wall on the way up to the igloo, activate the cannon and then blast myself to the star. I think one of the toads tells you that the time influences what happens in the clock.
As the world's biggest Mario fan (big claim I know) I will admit that I've never been a huge fan of SM64. I like the game, but I don't absolutely adore it the way that I do Mario Bros 3 or Mario World, or Mario Odyssey, or 3D World. I feel like SM64 was a huge leap toward for the franchise, but Mario hadn't yet worked out all the kinks of 3D platforming just yet.
Imo. Dire dire docks 100 coins is the worst star in the game.theres barely more than 100. If you miss a blue coin your basically screwed. And at the beginning of the level theres 5 coins that you can barely see. And dont even get me started on that hole that kills you WITH COINS NEXT TO IT. Rage inducing!😂
Shifting Sand Land and Hazy Maze Cave are some of the best-designed stages in the game. Imo more difficult means better in the case of SM64. Also I will never understand why all the Dire Dire Docks stars are so high. And, the best one, Collect the Caps, is ranked as the worst one. Overall, OK ranking, but it really shows that you have absolutely zero experience with SM64.
2:57 you simply climb the pillar closest to the water with the red coin and wait for the bird to come to you. You just jump when he does and bam, you got the star 3:57 you simply corner the monkey in any way where he has back to you running away. Slowly walk up and start hitting grab. You’ll inch slowly to him & for WHATEVER reason will not flee till you snag him. Don’t ask me why, it works for both monkeys but sadly not Mips

It was interesting to see a new player’s perspective on this game. Even if having such positive thoughts on Rainbow Ride is definitely different.
the reason wet dry world is so creepy is that town with all the red coins as it’s completely flooded most of the time

I always found the Wing Cap Switch red coins to be way harder than Wing Mario Over the Rainbow (or whatever its called).
Good video, when I saw the views I was surprised this wasn't more popular. You definitely have the makings of a popular youtuber.

It’s 106 coins
On snowman's big head you can use the cannon to shoot yourself to the tree at the top and get the start quickly.
Snowman’s big head I one of my fave stars! Good video though earned a sub
I beat this game in the 90s, but only because my local library had a guide. I agree that a lot of the stars are bs.
