      “Mom” I made it.
You know what, now I want to know what the people can find, discover, tell me about if Nintendo ever made Mario his own parents, if the Characters ever said stuff, or something thst sounds like Mario had something to do with them in some sort of way, I feel like Wario is grandpa and Waluigi can be the uncle or something, peach is of course the always rescued and stolen over and over wife, Luigi is the brother, yoshi is the dinosaur pet, a lot of toads are the parents of smaller toads, King Goomba is the parent to all goombas or if not then the king only, of all of them, king bob-mob is likely just the king of all bob-mobs and maybe pink ones though are outsiders, snow men are likely the children of the Big snow man that Mario has to give back the body for his star, wiggler is likely just the outside worlds insects unowned, bowser is likely the evil king with multiple jail sentences thereby not allowed in Mario’s castle.
      Idk about Mario though 🤔

It's almost as bad as the Red Coin mission in Hazy Maze Cave when getting the metalhead cap. If you get caught in the current you'll be thrown out of the level outside the castle and to get back you'll have to go all the way back to the basement, enter the level find the secret portal and start all over again. But you'd really need to suck at the game for it to happen. So yeah they both suck.

Compared to other games of the time like Spyro, Gex and Banjo, the 100-coin star missions in Mario 64 aren't nearly as tedious. There's usually more than the necessary amount, which prevents the whole thing from feeling like you're looking for a needle in a haystack, and exploring almost every bit of the environment after tackling mission based stars is pretty satisfying; makes the player feel like a master of the levels on offer.

After playing the Galaxies for the first time this year, I really can't articulate how grateful I am they ditched 100 coin stars (purples be damned). Honestly I'm still kinda miffed they continued them in Sunshine with how clearly unpopular they were among players (even back then), but they were obviously scrapping for content in that game in more ways than one. One of the reasons Whomp's is so good and accessible is because of the abundance of coins making that challenge quick/trivial, which it should've been for every stage imo.

I think 100 coin stars can be very fun if the level is designed in such a way that it isn't a massive pain to get that many coins. In Super Mario Sunburn it is _much_ more convenient to get the 100 coin shines due to the game not booting you out in between shines and the more generous availability of coins in general through minor changes such as making red coins worth 2 coins like they were in 64. I think that if enough thought is put behind their design then they can be really fun, but that's just not the case in vanilla 64 and Sunshine unfortunately.

Whomp's Fortress's popularity can generally boil down to its relatively small size, packed with easily over 130 coins, and every star can be collected in your earliest visit, none requiring any Caps. A good player could clock it under 10 minutes.
The most popular star, Princess Peach's Secret Slide, probably like for many other players, holds a special place in my heart. When I was too young to collect any of BoB's stars in a New Game ( too difficult for me ), I'd instead ask permission from my older sister to play on her 63 Star file, to access more than just BoB, and the only place I was allowed to go, was the Secret Slide, as falling from it didn't deduct any lives ( looking back, none of us were smart enough to notice that loosing lives like I was so used to, had no impact ever on any save file, on top of the fact that the amount of lives is never saved ).
I think I've lost count of the amount of times I completed it. I also clearly remember noticing the oddly slower Timer, but no one at home would know for years that this was caused by the game being a PAL version, running at a slowed down pace of 25 FPS. The speedup of the DS remake, when I played it for the first time around 2009, came at quite a shock to me!

I couldn't agree more with the consensus on Dire, Dire Docks. It's really bad in every respect. The level itself is out of the way and ancillary, the level design is stilted and uninteresting, it takes needlessly long periods of time to get to most of the stars, it has a third chest star and TWO ring stars, and overall manages to evoke no real theme. It's a shameful display for a second water level.
By contrast, I'd actually say the first, Jolly Roger Bay, is my favourite level. Not because it has the best level design -- that would be Whomp's Fortress -- but because of how it feels. I only played SM64 as a teenager via emulation, so I don't have childhood memories to be fond for with regards to it, but something about the atmosphere, serenity, and MUSIC of JRB comes together perfectly. It takes me back to a time before I was even born and makes me feel honestly nostalgic. Also, it being so simple means I can really get into a routine for the five minutes it takes to get all seven stars. While not the best level in the game on an objective standpoint, it is my favourite level to play through, no question. The only other serious competitor is Whomp's Fortress.

@@thekeyandthegate4093 I think LLL is just okay-ish, personally. It does get brownie points for having a decent flow of movement, but I simply cannot abide the fact that it is such a ludicrous mess spatially. It don't HATE it like some other stages, but it is really pretty random. If I were to rank the 15 stages, it'd probably go like this:
      1) JRB
      2) WF
      3) CCM
      4) TTM
      5) BOB
      6) RR
      7) TTC
      8) BBH
      9) SSL
      10) LLL
      11) SL
      12) WDW
      13) HMC
      14) THI
      15) DDD
For my money, all the levels worse than LLL are the ultra-forgettable Snowman's Land as well as the four levels which I actively dislike playing to some extent. LLL is, essentially, the bottom of the acceptable barrel content-wise. Frankly, it's such a shame that the game's best content is all scrunched up at the beginning; TTM is the only later-game saving grace.

    • @marcellocatalfamo5453
      @marcellocatalfamo5453 2 года назад +1

@@basilmybeloved7170 Interesting! Personally, a lot of the "magic" of JRB rests in the first star... the fogginess, dark atmosphere, music... none of it is particularly hi-fi, but it works. And while I can't speak to your experience of the game, I'll reiterate that I only first experienced the game through emulation. A lot of the reason I like the stage is because of how it makes me feel and the relationship/perspective it gives me towards someone playing at the time. In objective terms -- level design-wise -- it's like, not THAT great. None of the game's levels are actually phenomenal mind you (TF is the best, frankly, because it's concise like when your 9th grade teacher gives you a 400 word-limit essay), but if we're discarding everything save the geometry then it'd likely sit around #8 or #9.
I would contend that DDD's level design is still worse. Its use of space is really poor, with a lot of empty space wherein the area available does is not justified by the content you get by crossing it. The first room has a very large top with pretty much just 5 coins and the manta ray. The second room, more egregiously, has tucked two stars in one side and then like, 10 coins way over the other side. It's very ugly and boxy, too. Granted, I can appreciate that it would be somewhat difficult to manage the space in the dawn of the 3D era considering the shadow of the platforms above water in the sub room, but it's still ugly. Plus, of course, the infamous tunnel is just absurd. It serves no purpose except to make stuff take longer. I mean really, are they testing your ability to swim up and then back down? The level also features the most egregious example of the caps just being keys for ~9 different stars. And let's not forget the "screw you" suction hole of doom. Common to both water stages are just barely over 100 coins for the coin star, but for my money JRB has a better distribution of coins for what is generally a pretty tedious task.
Overall, while neither stage has great objecive level design, I think DDD is still the worse level.

The problem there is that too many people have childhood trauma from the Water Temple when their brains were too squishy to figure it out. Guys, it's not a bad dungeon. It's not a hard dungeon either. Just don't forget to go under the buoy in the central tower, make sure you have three keys before you start opening locked doors, and make sure you have two keys before going after the Boss Key. And for crying out loud, consult your freaking dungeon map if you can't figure out where to go! I'd get it more if there was a freestanding key or something, but everything's in chests! It's just bias.

Tall Tall Mountain is my favorite due to nostalgia. As a kid, I played SM64 through the Wii virtual console. I was pretty bad at games, so it was rare that I beat the basement before losing interest and starting over the next time I played. As a result, TTM has had this mystique to it because I so seldom made it there, but I liked it as a level. Heck, my nostalgia towards TTM may be bleeding into my opinion on mountain levels in Mario games in general. So many mountain levels in mario games just give me this "you've come so far, but you still have a little ways to go." Vibe.

Those flipping transitions between pie charts in the beginning are very flashy, I would have considered putting a photosensitive epilepsy warning for them, or simply using a different transition.
I also would have used a "broken heart" icon for the "least favorite" statistic, so that it contrasts to the "heart" icon for the "favorite" statistic, rather than using the "thumbs-down," which makes it contrast to the "thumbs-up" icon for the "like" statistic.

    My opinions:
Favourite level: Wet-Dry World. This level has so much going on and is just so endlessly fascinating that it's a joy to play. A fantastic mixture of platforming and puzzle solving against a backdrop of a strange, almost urban enviroment that is mysterious and haunting. Unlike most stages that have at least one star that's a bit of a chore, every single star in this stage is fun to collect, including the 100 coin star - you can easily reach 100 coins before even going to town.
Least favourite level: Snowman's Land. Utterly boring and uninspired level where everything just looks the same. None of the stars in this one are fun to get, they're either too easy (In The Deep Freeze) or demand incredibly tedious steps to get (Whirl from the Freezing Pond) or both (Snowman's Big Head). Has a miniboss which is just a recolour of one from LLL, including water that burns you like lava (how does this make any sense?) which looks like the rest of the water in the level with NO indication that it's any different. Overall level design is lazy, like the level designer just said "snow field with a big snowman in the middle" and then went for an early lunch. Terrible.
In defence of Dire Dire Docks, it's not my favourite level but it doesn't deserve all the hate. It is not as bad as some other levels like Snowman's Land. Its only flaws are its very low coin count and the fact that some of its stars are just copy-pasted from JRB. I remember as a kid being absolutely thrilled at the transition between the natural, cave-like terrain in the first area and the more artificial and industrial environment in the submarine dock, which instilled this incredible feeling like you were sneaking in to one of Bowser's bases. That and the fact that the submarine leaves after BitFS blew my mind as a kid. It felt like you were really making an impact on the world and that Bowser was actually running from you. DDD serves a role in the narrative of SM64 that none of the other courses do and that's a big part of its charm, which nowadays is taken for granted.

    • @casualvanilla
      @casualvanilla 2 года назад +1

I disagree with ranking Snowman's Land as a least favourite, but it is weaker than Cool Cool Mountain without a doubt. I'd still keep Dire Dire Docks below it, just because it's so SLOW. I'm no speedrunner, but sluggish gameplay can kill the mood, especially since half of the stars require you to swim that long tunnel to the other side.
On a related note, who thought it was smart to give Snowman's Land three types of water? You have water that you can swim in that will drain your power; you have water that's frozen and will make you slide around; you have water that is so cold it acts like lava.

Because this survey didn't have a formula for an Overall Score like other videos in this series, I decided to calculate one myself. I know this is a bit late, but it's better than never.
Calculation: (Level Likeability X .75) + (Star Average X .25) + (Favorite X 2) - (Least Favorite X 2) rounded to the tenth place. I made the Level Likeability vs Star Average a weighted average favoring Level Likeability for several reasons: for the full courses, the Star Average did not change as drastically due to already being an standard average of 8 items, so giving them too much weight would make the course scores less distinct; for the shorter stages there were normally other important factors to consider such as the method of finding the hidden stage, power-ups unlocked, and/or the Bowser fights that the Star Average doesn't account for; and for ALL stages there were elements like aesthetics that can affect a players enjoyment in ways that are harder to quantify. In other words, stars are important, but not as much as how everyone voted they liked the level overall. Meanwhile, the multiplication for the favorite and least favorite section is based on how Snooplax does the formula in later videos.
For the ranking list, the stages are indented to make it easier to differentiate them from the courses, in case you only wanted to judge the latter.
From Most Popular to Least Popular Level (with Scores):
    Whomp's Fortress: 120
    Bob-omb Battlefield: 103.4
    Lethal Lava Land: 95.7
    Cool, Cool Mountain: 87.4
    Big Boo's Haunt: 86.9
    Princess's Secret Slide: 85.4
    Tall, Tall Mountain: 80.8
Bowser in the Dark World: 77.1
    Bowser in the Sky: 73.7
Bowser in the Fire Sea: 68.3
Cavern of the Metal Cap: 64.5
    Snowman's Land: 63
    Wet-Dry World: 61.6
    Shifting Sand Land: 61.5
    Tick Tock Clock: 55.2
    Hazy Maze Cave: 52.1
Vanish Cap Under the Moat: 50
    Tiny-Huge Island: 49.6
    Jolly Roger Bay: 46.3
Tower of the Wing Cap: 30.6
    Secret Aquarium: 29.3
    Rainbow Ride: 9.9
    Dire, Dire Docks: .2
Wing Mario Over the Rainbows: -2.7 (making this the only negative score)
So it seems that people actually DO generally dislike Wing Mario Over the Rainbows more than Dire, Dire Docks!
Edit: Fixed some odd spacing issues; should be good now

Tick Tock Clock is better, along with Whomp's Fortress. Though, I'd call them both good levels in the original game. Hazy Maze Cave is arguably worse because not much changes, and the toxins actively halt the character any time they jump in (making navigation without a power-up nearly impossible unlike the original). Dire, Dire Docks is still boring, but at least the 100 coins is better.
I don't think many of the opinions would change if the DS version were used. At best, some lesser liked levels would be the slightest bit more favourable.

I think quite a few of the "emulator/other" votes could've been people playing the game on a DS (unless there was a question later to specify what was that other platform people played on)

What legend said they played SM64 for the first time on Nintendo 64 Online? Step forward!

Interesting take on the poll. Im one of those divisive Hazy Mazers considering that course my favorite despite it being one of the "underworlds" with sulphuric gas being a big component. It's the only mainline course where you get the quicksilver derived metal cap. Sm64 is masonic digital ritual (look up Owen Cyclops for the breakdown). Mario is Mercury.
I think this might be even more interesting if you had left out the 100 coin stars. They're always the least favorite and only for people that are determined to complete everything. It feels like every gamer has played through this jaunt.
Generally speaking, the initial worlds or terrestrial worlds are the strongest (no poor worlds on the main floor) the underworld has some gems (dire dire docks is dogshit, worst in the game by far while Lava land and Hazy Maze are chock full of depth and intrigue) and they get a bit weaker upstairs. Tiny big stands out up top along with tall tall mtn and wet dry world to me. Tick tock clock and rainbow cruise are threadbare and extraordinarily difficult sure. They also feel desolate compared with Whomps fortress or Bob Omb's Battlefield for example.
Classic tech demo for the Rare N64 platformers to improve upon. Sm64's golden aspect is Mario's movement which debatedly has never been improved upon. What a game

Nice video and survey! If you're looking for another survey video to do, I think a Super Smash Bros 64 video could also be a fun idea, which characters people like playing as/like playing against, and what stages they like.

Tiny Huge Island was too hard for me as a kid playing 64 DS. When I went back on recently after years of not playing it, I looked at what stars I had and hadn't got (I had collected 90 something stars) and none of them were from THI

Seeing all of this data is awesome. I think it confirms some common opinions: WF and BOB are the best, LLL and CCM are elite, RR and DDD are the worst, and many of the middle/late game levels are liked overall but divisive. The real surprise to me is Tall Tall Mountain polling so well. I love it personally but I never imagined it would almost be in the top 5 for standard courses.

you should have included mario 64 ds, im sure way more people were introduced to mario 64 through the DS than the actual 64 version

I feel like keeping it to a binary "enjoyed the star or not" doesn't work as well as some sort of scaling. I get wanting to keep it simple, but for example off the start, the chain chomp Big Bomb Battle Field may have scored so well not because people love it, but because people aren't going to say they dislike it. It's pretty inoffensive and hard to actively dislike. I love videos and projects like these and appreciate the work put into it, but for the next one like it, maybe consider even adding just a third neutral option or a 5 point scale.

I feel that in this case though it represents accurately the preference. People HATE the wing cap Mario to get red coins because the power up is very annoying to control.

I love these videos, Mario 64 is a great game, I would love a video on other games like subshine or odyssey.
Hard to pick a favorite course, Star, etc they are all good.
Would also like to vote in these polls.
I wish I knew about this poll so I could have filled it out.

I recently decided to 100% Mario 64 for the first time since I got 3D all stars (my first time playing this game) and I loved it so much the first time that I ended up completing the game 3 times within a week. At first, I hated how clunky the game felt, but it gradually grew on me over the course of my playthrough and it feels so good to actually pull of some tricky platforming to skip some sections. Once you understand where everything is on the maps, they become like a playground. Wanting to get better and faster at completing this game made it become my favorite (former being odyssey). This game has helped me get over my anxiety when it comes to water levels (because things swimming at you in the water is scary af) and now dire dire docks is one of my favorite levels. Still trying to get myself to get through Sunshine because of it though. That being said, I hate sand now because of this game. 10/10 would recommend.

Don't you just find it ironic how Dire Dire Docks and Jolly Roger Bay are the most frustrating levels yet it they have the most relaxing music tracks in the entire game?
