Rick, you are like a kid at Christmas when you get a new drone. I love it. I think DJI is making a genius move here with the Mini SE. A perfect drone to recommend to pals who want to get into the hobby, but balked at the Mini and Mini 2's $500+ price point. Anyway, keep up the great work!

Told my local hobby shop to let me know when they come back in stock. After seeing some comparison videos that night, the next day I return a $100 big box store toy drone and pre-paid the hobby store for the SE. I'm looking forward to getting it this week. 😎
Thanks for the post and you made the right decision. The Mini SE is an amazing quad for the price and is a dream to fly. There are a lot of lower priced drones out there that look like good bargains but you'll get frustrated at their drifting and connection issues. Ya I figured that out yesterday. I took the drone out and was LARPing as my former recon soldier self so I was staying “camo-ed” in a forest with an opening in the tree canopy above, I launched the Mini SE up through the canopy and flew it around over the forest and over a farm field. Much to my surprise I kept getting an interference message and was freaking out that the drone was gonna crash into a tree. It also makes a difference when you point the remote antennae toward the drone, you should always turn to face the drone’s location because between the interference of the trees and the degraded transmission signal it was becoming an issue. It was also a little freaky hearing the drone nearby but loosing sight of it now and then through the tree canopy. From now on I’m only using the drone from the edge of a tree line out in the open. Was a good lesson to learn though.
It looks very identical to the Mini 2. Since DJI already started introducing color changes with the white Pocket 2, would be cool if the Mini SE came out in a slightly different color just for distinction.

Enjoyed watching....will be getting mine delivered next week...can't wait...didn't know you were in NJ...I am in Matawan and concerned on where to fly...several years ago I was flying the Phantom in Cheesequake and was told drones are not allowed...now they have signs up....was wondering if drone flying is allowed in Holmdel Park.

I have the Mini SE and have considered the heavy drones. It all comes down to stealth and noise for me. Drones are not only becoming more regulated but more hated as well. What I really want is an RC though. Hooking up a phone just seems antiquated. Mini 3 Pro is on radar.
Thanks for the post and I agree with you. The Mini 3 Pro is the right drone for you. I'ts almost silent above 100' and is packed with features and an amazing camera. It's small enough to fit in a backpack with all of the other gear you'll need to fly but can still handle a level 5 wind. I also love the integrated controllers for their simplicity. I can't tell you how many times I've arrived at a location to fly and had app issues with the phone or had a bad cable. With the Smart Controllers, you just charge a single device and you're ready to fly.
The latest Advisory requires you see orientation, direction of flight, height and distance without the screen or enhanced vision. You cannot do that with one strobe. Use UAV Forecast?
Dennis, thanks for the post and I use the LEDs on the drone to help with orientation but there's no way you can know distance or elevation without using the controller. I can ballpark it, but I trust the tech to give me the details I need to fly safely. It'd be the same thing as asking a pilot of small plane to estimate their AGL without looking at an altimeter, they simply can't do it. The strobe for me just helps me keep an eye on the drone in the sky.
Drone Valley Oh I agree! Just someone in the FAA trying to make their name controlling drones. Just their latest advisory that basically limited us old guys with a few hundred feet to come close to meet their requirements. Seems they want to get rid of "Recreational Flyers" completely. I ended up with a 31 point checklist for our group of seniors fliers to stay safe and legal here.
Lots of the video looked blurry to me. Really noticeable at 8:45 over the grass. Bands of blurry that would clear up at a certain point. Is it just me or did someone else see that?
Thanks for the post and I think you're seeing the limits of what that sensor can do. You have to remember that it was in Sport mode (moving fast) and close to the ground (a lot of detail to capture) and a low light flight (golden hour) so all of those things together was a lot for the quad to handle. I did want to try and show you some of the limits of what you can expect. A set of ND filters and some adjustments to the ISO manually would have helped but I wanted everything to be shot "stock" for comparison. I hope that helps. Rick

Pete, believe it or not the camera on the Mini 2 is the same sized sensor as on the Mavic Pro (one of my favorite quads) and looks incredible for a tiny drone. It's portable and a ton of fun to fly. You're going to love it. Thanks for the post.
What about the battery life? The battery lives of my two previous drones were not good. I purchased new batteries few times and they were expansive. Do I need FAA registration for this one?
how does the SE compare in regards to weight? I know it's under 250g but the issue i had with the mini 1 is when i put a strobe on it the weight went over 250g.

I have had many drones over the years but have been wanting a DJI drone and this will my chance. But I do despise drones which require you to use your phone. But most do these days. So my question is, are most recent Android phones compatible with this controller? I change phones every couple of years and have many older android phones so I was hoping to dedicate one of my older ones to this controller. Any advice on how that might work out? they need to make a mini 3 non pro with the latest signal version and a few tweaks. It seems like they just want to keep selling the mini 2 for longer than they really should to make more money

Randy, it can shoot both 1080p @60fps and 2.7K @30fps. I might have missed mentioning that since I was pretty excited to start flying it. I normally shoot in 1080p and love the video footage this quad can capture.

Can you really determine the attitude of the aircraft at 1500 feet? For the record, I believe we can fly safely at these distances but technically we are in violation of the rule most of the time. Here it is:. Determine the unmanned aircraft’s attitude, altitude, and direction of flight;
Allen, thanks for the post and I agree that the rule is ambiguous somewhat. Whenever I read a rule like this, I always try to understand what they created it and what they really want us to do. In this case, the rule was to prevent us from posing a hazard to other aircraft in the area. Now technically other planes need to be well above 500' (unless they are sightseeing, landing or other special circumstances) but we still need to be aware of the airspace. The reason those three criteria are mentioned is because you'll need to take evasive action of another aircraft enters the sky near your quad. All three of those parameters are hard to determine by eye so I use the controller's display for that. I know that seems like I'm not maintaining VLOS when I do that, but the rule doesn't state that it has to be continuous from takeoff to landing. The bottom line is that I have a clear view of the sky at 1500-2000 and can drop to the deck if I see or hear anything near me to protect other aircraft. Where it gets really dangerous is when a goofy pilot flies their quad on a "distance test" miles away from their takeoff point. In this case, they're essentially blind for 270 degrees of the sky and asking for trouble. I hope that helps and Happy Flying!
Good job Rick! I have a Mavic Air 2 and a Mavic Mini. I was thinking of replacing the Mini with the Mini 2 but I believe you mentioned in a previous clip that there would be a Mini 3. Do you still believe that?
A hot day here in Jersey is anything over 85 degrees with high humidity. It feels like a sauna when there's no breeze. When I fly on hot days like that, I avoid recharging the batteries until they had had a chance to cool down a bit.

I just got the Mini SE yesterday. I'm in love! It's so small/light and minimalistic. Great for travel,. road trips & hiking, etc...

Does the cellphone/tablet need a svc plan? My current phone is a tad bit too big. I have a extra non-active phone.
It has the same motor as the mini 2 so it handles the wind just as well as the mini 2 would great upgrade dji

The bottom line is that I have a clear view of the sky at 1500-2000 and can drop to the deck if I see or hear anything near me to protect other aircraft. Where it gets really dangerous is when a goofy pilot flies their quad on a "distance test" miles away from their takeoff point. In this case, they're essentially blind for 270 degrees of the sky and asking for trouble. I hope that helps and Happy Flying!
Good job Rick! I have a Mavic Air 2 and a Mavic Mini. I was thinking of replacing the Mini with the Mini 2 but I believe you mentioned in a previous clip that there would be a Mini 3. Do you still believe that?

Hi, I am from the UK, what is a "hot day"?
A hot day here in Jersey is anything over 85 degrees with high humidity. It feels like a sauna when there's no breeze. When I fly on hot days like that, I avoid recharging the batteries until they had had a chance to cool down a bit.
