I'm not a chemist. I studied electrical engineering but I find this stuff fascinating. Great work! Really enjoy your approach to chemistry. You should do some collaborative work with Tom on Explosions and Fire / Extractions and Ire.
What's the advantage over the more familiar amateur method using just ethanol and sulfuric acid? Seems like this method is faster but takes a lot more exotic reagents
There’s no advantage whatsoever for making Et2O with this method. It can be used though to prepare all kinds of exotic ethers like isopropyl methyl ether.
It doesn't require conc. sulfuric acid, which is hard to get for many amateur chemists as it is dangerous. Chloroethane can easily be synthesized from ethanol, zinc chloride, sodium metal, and hydrochloric acid. And sodium ethoxide can be made from sodium metal, which is easier to get than sulfuric acid.
calcium sulfate anhydrous can dry acetone. sodium ethoxide instead from NaOH and ethanol, US patent US1978647A uses dry acetone to precipitate the ethoxy sodium.@@Ormodius3751 May want to brush up on air free technique, like cannula transfer and cannula filtering with dry inert gases.
It can be used to prepare all sorts of ethers. Methyl Ethyl ether and everything you can imagine. For making diethyl ether it’s actually to expensive but we decided to do it anyway.
That little beaker is just adorable!

I instantly knew you tampered with the lighter.. lol that soot
Ethyl bromide works also, and you can leave the excess ethanol as a solvent. Heat it to 55 C, and it makes ether and nabr salt. Distill to purify.

That makes sense, thanks for the reply!

Does not require high temperature with strong acids.@@THYZOID
Thanks never heard of that method.

Thank-you.
Such materials are not available here in the UK to the general public.
Nice blade 👌
Yeah that lighter definitely seemed weird. Cool idea though!
Petroleum ether solvent deodorize formula Sher plz
Very interesting
could it work with iodoethan too?
yes
I love sodium metal i love this 3lement ,fools drop it in water ,because thwr are fools
what is the sperm in the syringe
You better not find out
