I'm doing a no buy for January and certain categories I'm doing a 6 month no buy. Those are attainable goals for me. I'm on a no buy for clothes for 6 months as well. Today I had to throw away 47 lip products because they were old and yucky. But some weren't even used.. I can't waste like that ever again. The guilt was strong. You're mindset is contagious and my 47yr old butt is seeing things a little differently because of some of you young ladies here on the RUclips. Thank you and Happy New Year

I did a no buy or low by for the last three years since the pandemic hit. It’s worked wonderfully well for paying things off and saving cash. Some of the best advice I can give is clean out and re-organize every closet; your clothes, all of your extra shampoos and soaps and toothpaste organize everything so that you know what you have (inventory of how much you have). Then you’ll know what you do not need to buy. If you have those inventory list with you when you go shopping then you’ll know, “I already has seven conditioners that I need to use up or I already have four deodorants.” I don’t need any more right now. It works for anything, make up, food in the pantry. You can spend that project time in January re-organizing and inventorying your storage areas. It’s super helpful for the whole year.

I have a larger no buy project this year.
I am only going to buy food at 3 bulk stores. I can break that rule if the food is hand made or hand crafted. In other words, if it's locally made and not from a large company.
The main why I'm doing this is is to save money. Alot of my excess spending on food last year was done at smaller stores buying processed food items or sauces that the larger stores don't sell. I also want to eat healthier and learn how to fill in gaps with things I grow, raise or make. I am a homesteader so food is something I'm already able to supplement.
Thank You for inspiring this no buy project.

I'm all set for no-buy January! I'm pretty well fixed for what things I don't want to buy this month. And I'm going to remind myself, whenever I'm tempted, to just go back up to my room and look at all the stuff I've already got, and use THAT. Even if that means switching up from one product I'm tired of to another I've barely used but want to try. I have to remember *I have enough.* Doing it for just one month at a time should help me to build up a good non-buying habit.

For me I needed to set myself up for a lifelong low buy otherwise I was just gonna spend regardless but feel worse about it
When I first started I meditated on what I want the most: it ended up being green eyeshadow and blush lol
So, I did some research and found formulas I'd like, I then bought certain things at certain times throughout last year. Sales, when I'd get tips at work, bigger goals being met like making credit payments, etc
Now that I'm about 2 years into this new mindset it's been a lot easier to shrug things off, to stay on track and whatnot
The greatest choice I made was enabling myself to spend so I could create a makeup collection that reflects my adventurous, luxurious and bold taste
2023 will be a year of replenishment and seeking deeply unique things as the base and toppings of my collection since I have enough filling.
My next purchase will be Clionadh shades that I've spent a literal year making sure I want-- so I'm really proud of this journey, as a couple years ago I wouldn't have been able to tell you such a concise answer to "what do you want?"
Instead of staying complacent and saying to myself I deserve things because I've been forced to exist-- I make myself earn it somehow because appreciation is a cycle like anything else.
Thanks for this video, it's really helpful to anyone on a similar journey no matter how far along they are

I think I'm going to have different goals each week. for the first week, no flavored water/diet soda (I buy a lot of these), and they are $$. I will increase my no buys each week until it becomes a habit! My goal will be to pay ALL bills on time this month, and only focus on bills. cuz holidays are expensive!

I'm starting with stuff I have loads of from Christmas (no chocolate or books) and also no shoes. We got some new wardrobes fitted last year and the amount of footwear I own as a ratio to the ones I actually wear is obscene. I only have two feet after all!

Happy New Year Shawna, great video as always!
I found that NOT self flagelating over breaking the no buy / diet / other ''activity'' and just going right back into it while also seeing what lesson I learned from the ''mistake'' is the best way to go for me. Sort of gentle parenting myself into not making perfect the enemy of good enough and gentle parenting myself into picking myself up if I fail.

I have struggled with a no buy month before too. It’s just that getting started part, when you’ve been doing things badly financially for so long, one month seems like a nightmare and incredibly long. I’ve been doing a no buy properly for almost two months now. I’ve made a few oppsies but there are so many more green days than red. And it’s amazing to look at that calendar, and see how well I’ve done regardless. 😌🧡

I'm doing a no-buy year for personal things. But the exception is replacing things I really need ie skincare that's finished or underwear/shoes that really need replacing.
The reasons: 1) home improvement, need a new couch that's old and slowly disintegration. 2) I want to focus on traveling more this year. 3) continue my savings for retirement.
The important thing is definitely your why. If you have a strong why, it is so much easier to keep to your no-buy season because you have a focus.

I feel ok right now at the beginning of the month, BUT, my birthday is at the end of the month and friends and family are already asking me what I want. They know I love makeup so I usually get Sephora and Ulta gift cards. Just feels like a cheat using my bday as a get “free” makeup time when I’m just starting my no buy. I’m thinking of other things I want/need (shampoo, flats, clothes) but asking for makeup is so tempting

Plus we are seriously in a cost of living crisis thanks to Brex(sh)it. All it has done is made us all significantly worse off. My no buy is supporting me to heal my relationship with money, use my limited resources in the best way possible and get out of debt. Taking back control of my life was a boost in itself in 22 (my first no buy year). I will keep doing year long no buys until I feel my relationship with money has totally reformed.

I'm not really concerned about corporations. People taking care of their financial health isn't a trend in my opinion. Capitalism treats consumers like bottomless money pits and that is not sustainable, nor the reality I want to support.

Again, it doesn't matter where people spend their money if they can't afford to spend it. I am not advocating that people never spend money. I advocate for people to learn how to spend within their means. The average American credit card holder has over $6k, nearly 7k worth of consumer debt. The "average" way people spend = incurring debt. Not here for it. I get your concern for small businesses and sympathize. But, people will always need to buy stuff and therefore there is a place for small businesses. To focus on "what about small businesses" is a bit of a what-about-me- mentality and suggests overspending is ok as long as it's "worthwhile." It's focusing on the wrong thing, in my opinion.
