I never watched my grandmothers making soap, but I remember them telling me how they did it. They used a porcelain dishpan and a large porcelain soup pot. They even could make their own lye from wood ashes out of the stove. Both used tallow and bacon grease. We used it mostly in doing laundry so there were no fragrances added. I just remember how it would clean work overalls and get out stains. One grandpa was a mechanic and the other was a blacksmith. They both got pretty dirty. Thanks Corie for a great demonstration.

My Davis grandparents, from Southern Illinois, married in 1897. My daddy was the youngest of 6 children was born in 1918. They have been gone since 1960 and 1961…my daddy has been gone since 1996 so I don’t have anyone left to ask about some of the things I remember my grandparents doing when I was little like my Grandma Davis making soap in a huge cast iron kettle out in their back yard. Making soap is one of the “homemade” things that I have never done and I would like to try it. Well, now, come to think of it, my husband and I did make clothes washing soap last fall nut, I have not used it yet. There are just the two of us now so a jug of soap lasts us a good long while. That soap was just a bar of Fels-Naptha and a bar o Pfizer Zote Soap that are grated together with water added…I can’t even remember the recipe but it was very simple. I would like to try Corie’s soap. BTW, Corie, do you sell your soap?

You can grate this kind of soap to use in the clothes washer. It will melt in hot water. It makes your whites VERY white and lye soap makes your clothes smell a special kind of clean. So nice to watch! You have the most lovely tone and accent to your voice, wanted to tell you that...Great job! I also took a class some years ago to make soap..I was hooked for a number of years, I made soap, gifted soap, sold a little soap and then stopped several years ago..Now, I am getting the itch again.. Soaping served as a mental therapy for me too, after my Mom passed..Our teacher had us all in the class to take turns hand stirring the soap batter till reaching trace..I believe she did her soaps all by hand, but once I discovered the stick blender, no more hand mixing for me, lol..She also had us do our own calculations of the SAP values for the recipes..Yikes, not good for a math challenged person like me! First time I tried my own recipe that way, I ruined a batch, something was off...I definitely think it is crucial especially for beginners to use a lye calculator online, I use soap calc.net which is fool proof..And a stick blender, like you said! One question, did that essential oil come through for that large batch? I tend to like stronger fragrances soap so I use about .7 oz per pond of oils or up to an ounce per pound depending...Would love to see the soap cut! Thanks for helping to inspire me to soap again! I plan on making a high olive recipe with some coconut and castor oil, with milk and maybe some honey, ground oats and some blend of Essential Oils...Take care and thanks again!!

    • @flatcat6676

Yes - though I've noticed that folks from the east side of the mountains tend to have a somewhat softer accent. I'm a native East Tennessean and it seems that our high mountain accent is a fair bit sharper than what I hear from folks from NC or VA. We seem to have a lot of hard R's, and our accent sounds more akin to what I've heard when speaking to people from the highlands in Oklahoma or Missouri. Same words, just different stress on certain vowels, usually.
Got to love how varied branches of the same spoken language can become over time!

Some were very strong for heavy cleaning, some were wonderful & mild. She made soap for us kids to use to help with acne. She'd use the same recipe & use fine ground corn meal for exfoliation. She made a stronger soap with a coarser ground corn meal for grimey, greasy hard working hands. I love jojoba oil. It works with the DNA in human skin. Bringing your skin to it's own pH level. Vinegar WILL neutralize LYE. Vinegar is an acid, Lye is basic. The problem is HOW MUCH of each. If the vinegar is only 5% it might take quite a bit. But start with that if the spill on your skin is small. FLUSH WITH COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF WATER. ALWAYS use the goggles you absolutely do not want the LYE in your eyes. You can look up on line what is called an MSDS a Material Safety Data Sheet for more information on lye or any other chemical you are using that concerns you (or should). Use lye in a well ventilated area as well. I used to have my high school students practice with these. They are and should be by law available in your work place and easily accessible. If they are not, STATE LAWS REQUIRE THEM, contact your state health department to get the place you work for to comply. My generation WORKED HARD to get those laws in place. PEOPLE DIED without that information in work places. PLEASE use the information, especially about cleaning products in fast food joints, box stores, MINES or any location where chemicals/solutions are poured out of a bottle.

@@CelebratingAppalachia I was hoping you knew how. All I can remember is You run rain water thru hardwood ashes to get the lye. You can't use tap water with the chemicals added. It's ready to use when a chicken feather dunked in starts to disolve. My family made our soap when I was young.

I buy my essential oils from Mountain Rose Herbs. All their oils are made by them, from organic plants. A little more expensive yes, but I like they’re made from “organic” plant materials. 😍

I have vague memories of my granny, great-grandmother and great aunt making soap. They did it outdoors as well. I was a wee child then and don't remember much about the process. We lived near Edmonton, Alberta Canada 🇨🇦 at that time.

I too have been making soap since maybe 1997? Stone age.... Any way, I do about the same thing except I weigh out everything. I don't mix volume with weight. My dad was a chemist and he got that under my noggin. I also , because I keep bees and have a lots of wax, add that to the soap. But I heat the olive oil so it melts and mixes in the bees wax. Maybe 10% maximum by weight of all the oil combined. And because I use weight I use ice to add the lye to. The ice melts as the reaction occurs but it doesn't get as hot. I love how you use a stick mixer! I will do that. I use a standing mixer and it takes for ever. I made a recipe with dried lavender flowers added at trace. I decided it added an extra scrubbing 'thing". Who knows.... It was just fun to tell my wife that it had them in it. Like you I started soap making because I couldn't find a soap that didn't take my skin clear off. And maybe because my dad being a chemist, it was a family nod to him. He got me interested in the science of everything. I'm glad you found sustainable palm oil. The horror on the orangutans was too much for me to bear. So I stopped using it. But maybe I'll start again. Thank you!!

Hey just FYI! Vinegar (acetic acid/ethanoic acid) is a weak acid which may help to prevent itches by reacting to form sodium ethanoate and water. This is a weak reaction though, and the equilibrium will quickly revert the reaction back to the separate acetic acid and sodium hydroxide, which is why it's best to wash the area with water and dilute the solution and prevent reaction entirely. :)

Vinegar - it’s absolutely scientific. Vinegar (dilute acetic acid), like any acid, will neutralize any alkaline solution (sodium hydroxide solution is basically the most alkaline substance).

I am going to make some but I didn’t know about using the blender and pot for other stuff and you are the only one who has said not to use them for anything else due to the lye cross contamination! Thank you, thank you.m8 can5 wait 5o make my first batch. Hugs and love from Texas!

I am a professional Soap maker 😀 vinegar does neutralize the lye because it is acidic, where lye is basic. The pH of each will neutralize the other. But if you get lye in your skin you should rinse with water, then vinegar, then water again because straight vinegar can burn you too since it is an acid. Just FYI!

since you have made both types of soap using the heat method and the cold method, do you see any difference in the finished product? When I made soap years ago, I used the heat method, because I was following instructions from the old ways of making lye soap. Even to the point of using pork lard as my fat. The lye I got at the grocery store in the drain cleaner section. It was the red devil lye brand, because it was 100% lye. I don't think you can even buy pure lye in the grocery now. I have not seen red devil lye in many years. Anyway, I was just wondering if you could tell a difference in these two methods of making soap. I know the soap I used to make with heat, would last a long time. Longer than store bought soap.

Your so sweet with explaining the process. I make soap to for the same reason as you, its a beautiful soap for your skin with lovey oils. I think your soap molds are super cool, where did you get them and what size? I'd like to get a couple, I've been using the ice cube box things for the freezer and they're ok but a pain to line them. I love you and your sister's channel and your mom's too ❤️

I was privileged once many years ago to watch Ma Bailey make homemade soap. Chi didn't use the wood ashes leegwater threat to Mike Kerr lie she did you store about lie. But she used the fat saved from cooking in the kitchen. I saved a bar of this for many years but before a move, I threw it away because I was afraid somebody might think it was dope and not soap.
