I have taken a big step in my regency knit dress project - knitting large panels of lace! I'll be basically steeking all of the pieces out of these panels, which is terrifying - but I saved that for next time :) This time it is me vs the knitting machine and trying to knit over 50sqft of lace (though I ran out of yarn...)

I have been trying to knit a regency dress, and have been struggling quite a bit with the lace on the whole width of my knitting machine. So instead, I ended up knitting a practice 1940s bed jacket with the lace pattern I will be using for the regency dress. Don't worry - I'm still going to knit hte regency dress! It is just going to take a little longer than I planned :D

Honestly machine knitting should be considered a whole different craft from knitting! I'm a skilled knitter but I could never do this.
I kept making very loud horrified gasps whenever the lace dropped off the machine… and waking my dogs each time 😂 the panels turned out so beautifully though!!!! Cannot wait to see what it looks like when it’s done, but take your time- better to finish late rather than lose your sanity!!!

The lace is lovely. My kiddo made me pause the video so he could admire Nutella. Then he switched back to questions on how the knitting machine worked and how much faster it was then hand knitting.
This title made me laugh SO HARD. My knitting machine and I get on reasonably well, these days, but the lace carriage has been a NIGHTMARE, so I definitely understand the sentiment.
I have one, too, for my Silver Reed which is a very different thing from the Brother. My husband painstakingly serviced it and it works as it should, but it is sooo stiff and forces the needles over a sheet of metal so I do not like to use it at all. The Brother one, though, seems to offer some resistance as well so maybe I should just go and get used to it😵💫.
This is too nerve-wracking for me. My anxiety can't handle those accidents! You have patience of a saint!

Nobody who doesn't do machine knitting will appreciate how much knowledge, dexterity, frustration tolerance and sheer bloody-mindedness go into such a project! 👏👏👏
How on earth do you go to work, do all your wonderful crafting things, eat, sleep, pet the dog, and m ore? You must be amazingly organized. I hear editing takes 1 hour per minute! I love your stuff.
This is her job! So she doesn't have to fit in 'going to work' since this is work (and a lot of it 😂).

I consider myself a quite handy girl but this knittingmashine stuff is waaaay out of my league. Nonetheless, it’s like watch the olympics, I enjoy watching skilled people.
I can knit a full sweater, discover a mistake I made at the beginning, and not even bat an eyelash about ripping it out to the problem. But a machine not functioning correctly? The air will turn blue.

These issues with big holes and the piece jumping off the needles is precisely why I put my Brother machine in the closet 15 or 20 years ago, and there it sits. I'm just absolutely not committed to going through the goof ups! Kudos to you for thinking of the life line!! Smart lady!!
Would you consider selling your machine? I've made lace on my ultimate sweater machine but would love a real knitting machine😊
@@lolmynamenoway3783 i would if it was a dual carriage knitter with a lace capability. This one is just training wheels. I am retiring next year and after watching this I thought it might be time to set it up, oil it and see if I can get it to work for some plain knitting. Maybe in retirement I will have the time to focus on it.

Machine knit lace! You are a Saint! I just did plain stocking knit on my machine and it was nerve wrecking! I am so happy for the life line!!!! It's like watching a suspense movie!!! I used to do the blocking on my galvanized chicken wire fence. Dropping is the ban of my existence
Aaah! I was chanting lifeline lifeline lifeline, got a phone call and had to close the video for an hour or so, the tension I lost when I resumed watching and you were using lifelines! OMG, I applaud your patience. If this had been my machine I would have thrown in the towel about 20 mins in and the machine would either be up on FB Market Place or on its way to our local landfill. I love to knit, mostly to destress. Watching the trials and tribulations with this machine had my stress levels through the absolute roof! 😳😜🤣
This was tense! Particularly before you started using life lines! When you had to redo the first panel I was watching the offending area intensely in the hopes it wouldn’t drop again. When you started talking about life lines, it made me think about how in computers we talk about “saving” work. And it only just occurred to me that it meant “save” as in rescue- just like a life-line saves your work! I wonder if in the first computers if there was a saving mechanism similar to the life-line? My only knowledge about computer history literally comes from watching your videos!!!!

I have a lot going on so haven't been reading the comments but I too wanted to note that it is lovely to see you back at making and sounding happier, healthier. Whatever issues you're working on, it would seem that your path is taking you where you need to go. And oy, that lace is so lovely - the way you filmed it shows what a beautiful drape it has - I'm very excited to see it over that beautiful blue. But that is just to say that I'll be here if it takes weeks or months or whatever - you're learning a really challenging task - and the machine hasn't always cooperated, yet you hang in there and created gorgeous fabric. WOW. Keep healing at your own pace. We're pulling for you.

You have incredible patience too - i think i would've thrown that delicate wool out the window in frustration (and the machine after it lol). i thank you so much for showing us all the guts behind the scenes because that is what happens to me in similar ways when crocheting and knitting by hand. i kid you not, from taring to rows falling off knitting needles or comes unraveled from hook OR just mess up in general and do not notice till too far in and have to start entirely over. i was thinking it was only me ..... this is something i feel inspired and encouraged to continue on! ty

I started lace curtains on my brother machine a few months ago and I hit all the same pain points you did! Same "why isn't this working right" stage, same "oh, I need a lifeline" followed by lifeline elation followed by "wait, which row did I install the lifeline on" stages sprinkled liberally with nameless "aaarghhs!!!" 😂. Your lace came out soooooo pretty! It's inspiring me to keep going on those dumb, beautiful curtains
Once again, absolutely stunning! You may not have been my reasons to knit 1870s lace, but you are certainly the reason I've stuck with it (and tried other lacemaking methods besides.) Glad to see this worked out despite all the challenges and rescues!!

Another video so fast!! I am so impressed by your perseverance when something goes wrong. If I had a knitting machine and was working on this project, I would have cried the first time the knitting fell off, and I probably would have quit for a while if it happened again! I'm glad you're feeling a bit better, and I can't wait to see the finished dress!

ooh, steeking, the worst word in the knitting lexicon! i don't know if it will help at this point, but in hand knitting, my lifelines go into plain rows (wrong side or in your case left-to-right with the knitting carriage). that way it's easier to get back onto the needles, and easier to read the pattern in the lace and figure out where i was... of course, there's something to be said for always doing it in the same row every time... fingers crossed!

I've been watching your updates on this dress while I've been using my own circular knitting machines!! I've been prepping like mad to sell at a festival locally at the end of August and I just love seeing all of the gorgeous lace you've been working on. I look forward to seeing how the finished dress turns out.
Woooof! I have no idea how you gonna steek that lace but im so here for it!!! I steeked a simple stockinette sweater and boy was it terrifying... also the lifelines are great if you use a contrasting coulour yarn and just lay it loosely on top of each needle then you just pull it out when you are done like when you link together the hem and remove the cast on rag😊
This is a gorgeous piece! If you have a very thin circular needle like the ones used for socks, you can use it to help you sort out the stitches when you make a mistake. I use my set of Chiaogoo interchangeable mini needles for this, especially the size 0. I break, or cut the yarn, then pull out a few rows until I have no more broken stitches, then pick up the stitches with the circular needle, then use my transfer tools to put the stitches back on the knitting machine, then you can unscrew one of the tips and slide the cable out of the stitches.
It also looks like you may have a lot of weight on your knitted piece, perhaps a bit too much for such a fine, lacy piece, you could try placing a claw weight at each side and maybe a few more every 4-6 across the middle of the piece, but if you have too much weight, that could be adding too much stress to your thin yarn. I move my weights up maybe every 2-4 inches of knitting too.

I just love lace knitting, it's by far my favorite. There is a "fan" machine knit lace video that you will love on here somewhere. Maybe you have seen it, a 5 part video with pale greenish yarn. I mean this info for the poster of this video hahaha. NOT trying to be disrespectful 😊

I don't have the frustration tolerance for machine knitting. I'd go Office Space on it sooner rather than later.

Hi, if you are having wrist problems, 1 idea is to wear a support strap, i do because of long standing nerve damage, but I remove the metal bar just stops me from doing anything to aggravate it. ❤

I’ve used a life line for my knitting with lace. I luckily didn’t have to replace the work using it but it definitely makes me feel much more reassured 😅

WOW, that cast on rag looks so helpful! My knitting machine is a mid-gauge one, so I don't think that casting on is particularly tedious on mine, but this method is way faster!
Aaaaaand all this 🙌🏻 the long set-ups and unending, irreparable messups, were why i sold my machine five months after i got it. 😢

I’ve recently tried making a lace knit top on my machine and got 3/4 of the way through my first panel before stitches fell off. Since it had gone so “smoothly” before then, I thought it was a good idea to frog it all and restart.
The lace stopped cooperating immediately. I couldn’t get two inches in without a disaster. I still haven’t made that lace top. 😂😂😂

This reminds me of how I loved my knitting machine. I’ve lost all my skills now because I haven’t used my machine for years. I seem to remember using a nylon cast on cord and waste yarn for my cast ons. I also usually used an open cast on and used a crochet hook to ‘cast off’ after I was finished the piece. This gave a neat edge. Are you using a standard gauge machine? Maybe that yarn would be easier on a find gauge machine? ❤
So much work, and so many starts and stops, but the end result so far is lovely! I can't wait to see the next steps in this project.

I had a chunky knitting machine. It could knit double knitting yarn, Aran and chunky. Not sure what those weights would be in the USA.
I hope you will actually wear dress. It’s a beautiful pattern. Definitely still hand made. For my own projects I’m going into more handmade. As we speak I am hand sewing the gathers in a French seam for a 3 tiered summer dress. I’m actually using material from an older skirt for the bodice and a ripped sheet for the tiers. I enjoy the challenges to my creativity, resourcefulness and quality vintage fabrics I can reuse. Last winter I learned to knit myself a bunch of warm cotton or wool socks. This winter I’m planning to knit some tank under tops using a cotton one I really like as a pattern.
