My 7th grader came home from school yesterday to tell me that he was being given a award later that night (our notice from the school had been lost in the mail) but quickly told me he didn't want to go sit through that for just a piece of paper. I was more than good with it
At my son’s school they gave three. Best student, best athlete and most compassionate student. Kind of like the third one. Just being genuinely a good person to everyone. Looking out for kids being bullied, helping younger kids get to class. Being a friend when one is needed and it’s voted by the students. I have no problem with those three
Yeah, those are so interesting. I’m curious though, what are the parameters of best student? Or even best athlete?
I do like those 3 but I feel like they could be “Best GPA” or “Most Games Won” or “Best Team Captain” or something so it’s a little clearer and more motivating for other students to achieve. But the idea behind them is great

Man, as a gay man who married my husband in 2017 I need pumps to help us renew our vows. Though I hate that idea of renewing vows of pumps did it I'd be down. Been married for7 yrs together for 10. I hope and pray that the marriages of gay couples remain valid if the Supreme Court decides to overturn Obergerfell. I mean, what unimaginable chaos will ensue if that happens. Along with the deep emotional distress it would cause these couples to have their humanity called into question, to be considered beyond the pale. The possibilty makes me SO FUCKING ANGRY.! Dems MUST sweep the 2024 election, not just nationally but locally.

I am so happy to be retired. For 40+ years I spent Sunday dreading Monday, and that isn’t counting all the years I was in school when I also dreaded the beginning of a new week.
I was proud of my participation awards, I had mine in a photo album when I was a teen... A Honor Roll, A/B Honor Roll ect... With that said, teachers could just congratulate us, we didn't need to be recognized by the whole school... I hated that...
"Little Johnny" is the kid that gets all the other kids sick with his perfect attendance...
Ok listen. This has been stuck in my craw for WEEKS now. I have one kid in 6th grade, and one in 2nd. On Tuesday, I was in TWO SEPARATE hostage situations, AKA "Awards Ceremonies". My 2nd grader got a certificate for....wait for it...... improving her reading skills, and my 6th grader was recognized for HAVING A GOOD ATTITUDE IN SCIENCE CLASS. That's it. They were both awarded for doing the bare fucking minimum, and I've haaaaaad it with that bullshit. These kids are going to grow into absolute monsters who think that everything should be celebrated. This is white-collar child abuse, and I can't fucking stand it.
Taught 38 years. Always said that students should never be awarded for expected behavior. Of course, since it makes sense, it is for sure not gonna catch on. My dad( also a teacher) said that if it makes sense, admin will make sure it ain't happening.

My wife is an ordained minister that can marry people; actually, so is my step daughter; she's the one that officiated our wedding.
I just want to say as an elementary teacher of many years, there are children who are present at every awards assembly and will never, many times because of circumstances out of their control, get an award. It’s for those children I would give an award for effort or attendance.
To begin with most teachers are better educated than the parents. During the pandemic shutdown parents couldn't handle the teaching even with teachers present on line.

I have a trans child that moved to another country. I miss them so much that it tears my heart out. My husband and I are on a fixed income and are unable to visit but I'm so thankful that they live in a place where I don't have to worry about them being bullied/ killed because of who they are and can get the healthcare and mental healthcare that they need. WHY can't we all just get along and love and accept each other for who we are?!😢

At a recent High School award assembly, my colleague gave 8 "hardest Working" awards for each class period proving she doesn't understand how suffixes work. She's an art teacher. I basically threw my awards into the crowd.

I'm not sure anyone at my high school even knew what my mom looked like. And that was great for everyone involved.
I've had it with people who want to talk to me first thing in the morning at work. Stop with the "Happy Monday, Happy Tuesday", etc. Stop, just Stop. I'm fine if you don't speak to me until about 9:30 or 10.

His father found him unresponsive when he went to wake him for breakfast 😢

I agree! I am a former teacher. I was required to reward EVERYTHING single thing a student did! When I bucked it, admin quickly told me I had to. That or no reward at all.

I think if the parents are clear that these awards don't always come easily, that isn't so bad.
What I think is especially daunting is the fact that COS has skyrocketed and minimum wage is a joke- far below a living wage...but in addition, a person either has to get at least a 4 year college degree, meaning a ton of debt, or really good luck. Housing doesn't come cheap either.
Now the GOP wants to make sure they trap women and their children in poverty by forcing them to have children before they're ready.
I officiated a lesbian wedding a few years ago and it was a BLAST. I didn't even know the couple - was just recommended through a friend - but now I have two more gay friends and they're delightful (and so is their dog)! Highly recommend this form of allyship ❤

Hey patriots 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸! So I won a lot of awards in high school (and had zero parent involvement). Having those awards actually helped my self esteem during my PhD where I was surrounded by genius students and during the bad times I’d find myself in self loathing loops and would berate myself endlessly. I’d convince myself that I have been an idiot this whole time. But for some reason those awards would comfort me, like no girl, remember how much you excelled at geometry in 9th grade? lol it’s stupid and kinda funny.
Rewards for children are important.It's a great why to build confidence in children so they don't feel over shadow by peers who might excel better which said teacher syllabus

These days most the blue-collar folks I know work most Saturdays and anytime spent away from work they are doing everything they can to live in the moment and not think about work. I realize many people have stressful jobs, but on the other hand, many have jobs in factories and the like. Their job is boring, monotonous and life draining. ✌❤🤘

My son’s school doesn’t give any awards out. There are no cords, no collars, no valedictorian/salutatorian at graduation. I love this, and my son would likely have some of that shit from other schools. No stupid fucking signs in our yard either! We hate that so much!
