Thanks, I appreciate it! That trigger is 11 years old! I just recently was told the pattern on the face = female, not sure if that's accurate, but might explain the small-ish size after all these years (she's only about 6").
The mesh is actually the mechanical filter for filtering out large particles. The insert is carbon/polishing filter. While I am sure bacteria grows in the mechanical filter that is not its primary function.
WOW !! I really enjoyed this video and set up. I'm getting an Alligator Snapping turtle baby in September. I can't wait :( Just subscribed, great channel
Handle them more so they can get used to you so when they get bigger they won’t have a bad temper and want to bite your head off . But don’t handle them so much that they get irritated or sick from being taken out of their tank so much
@@jmthayoungin they can get sick from being held too much or being taken out of their tank for extended periods of time? Im trying to care for 3 one of which lost half its tail, i used to have about 34 total, newborn babies and i donated most of them to a rescue shelter local to my area who said theyd keep them for about a year or so until they can be released, but i still have these 3 babies and their shells are still soft too, and one lost its tail when i had them all cuz i think one of the others thought it was food ( they were kinda crowded for about 2 weeks till i could find i good animal rescue place) and i cant take them to the vet so i had to cauterize it so it wouldnt get infected, and id really like more information on caring for them, and i know that they get big pretty fast, and i know what they eat, but i seem to have a problem getting mine to eat as often as they should, in short i really need some help and info
I'm taking care of an alligator snapping turtle for the first time, and i don't really know how to take care of the tank- or how much water to put in it. This video helped me out a bit as well- i don't have the filtration system since I've never been able to keep a fish- I don't want to accidentally drown him either, I've read online that you put enough water into just cover their shell. My turtle is still a baby too- do you have any suggestions for a first time turtle owner? I rescued him and decided to raise him
My opinion, especially for hatchlings and youngsters that frequent more shallow water than adults, is it can only help and not hurt them in the long run. I have a UVB bulb over one end of my guys that is on a normal photo-period and they both spend time on that side. I have never seen either one out of the water basking on the drift wood, but they do grasp it and stick there heads out from time to time.
I've never tried that. I think if they are similar size when small, it might be doable, but Alligator Snappers, especially adults, are known to feed on other turtles in nature.
Hi I found a baby AST and it is has part of its tall missing and bleeding i found it in Michigan which is not were they live! What sould I do can you help?
Hi, thanks for watching and commenting, sorry for the delay in responding! I tried play sand at first, it just didn't clear up very well so I purchased the quite a bit more expensive bags of sand for aquariums.
My little dude shows zero interest in anything that isn't alive. Any tips on how to get him to eat chunks of fish ? My little dude came from Loggerhead Acres Turtle Farm as well. I'm looking forward to following your little guys and watching them grow up.
Thanks, I appreciate your comments. From the get go mine would show quite a bit of interest it whatever was in front of them, from tilapia chunks, silversides, shrimp, etc. Obviously, they do like the live food, but livebearer tropical fish get expensive (I don't feed goldfish or the like)!
@@abrauf5800 thanks for watching and the kind words! I basically started teasing in front of their faces either small chunks of shrimp or silversides and they started taking to them readily. Pellets took a while (would have to remove soggy ones the next morning), but now those get ate too.
I've only observed aggression once, and it was during feeding so it was my fault for not paying attention. They are generally found hiding in the same spot, side by side.

They like blood worms as well as feeder fish. Live is usually better but frozen also works in a pinch

Ever though of running a little 10gallon sump? Could keep the heater in it too
I'll probably do a sump when they're bigger to provide more filtration and to protect the heater.
Chuck Horne could do a bigger sumo and raise guppies in it for feeders too
Question can you leave them in your tank filled with water like this for all day? Or do you have to take them out to be on dryland for some time too?
they can get out on the basking platform if they want, but I've rarely if ever caught them doing that during the day. I don't "dry-dock" them at all.
Do gator snappers need a basking spot and uv lights if theyre indoors?

Thank you for watching and the comment. I'm happy with the ZooMed turtle heaters. I'm sure there are others just as good out there.
I like your top off system. What are the components ?
It's a Reef Fanatic ATO and an Aqua Lifter pump. Left overs from my reefing days!
