Thinking is useful. But being perpetually lost in thought - isn’t.

The key word. "Lost". As in meaning: no purpose, bearing or direction. I can spend hours alone thinking about meaningful things such as, God, life, death, the past, future, the human condition, right and wrong, heaven and hell and my very soul and I seem to "dig deeper" and learn more each time I do so. This learning allows me to edify my thoughts and actions further to live a better more fulfilling life. It's time consuming. Yes. But tell me this isn't useful.

There’s a massive amount of wisdom here. I discovered so many ‘cliches’ & ‘spiritual’ ideas speak the truth..... I almost died through a major health crisis......in a moment of the worst part I gained a new perspective, a weird clarity I guess...... I knew what mattered & what didn’t..... it isn’t stuff, it’s experiences, and more so things you didn’t do. I had an overwhelming sense of panic over the things I never did or thought I never would. I’m grateful for so much this side. It’s not possible to have a bad day when you know you almost had no more days! Live life right now, it’s all we have.

If you die tonight, do you know where you're going? Did you know that Jesus Christ is THE Truth, the life and the only way to Heaven?
Revelation 20:15 ''Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.''
Through Jesus Christ, God offers you a FREE gift - forgiveness. We aren’t saved by our good works, but only by the grace of God through faith in Christ. All you need to do is repent, turn away from your sins and evil ways, from now on put your faith completely in Jesus Christ and be obedient to Him.
      Biblical explanation of the Gospel:
      1) Hell, judgement. God doesn’t want anybody in hell, but you must understand why
we deserve hell and why those who refuse to live under His authority will go
there. He gave us the law (Ten Commandments) not to make us righteous, but
rather to show us our sin (Romans 3:20). God gave us free will and since Adam
sinned in the garden, sin is the nature of our flesh and we ALL have sinned. (Romans 3:23)
The law demands death to those who sin (Romans 6:23). Since we have all sinned, we all deserve hell.
Revelation 21:8 says that all liars will go to hell. Yes, even if you have lied once in your life, you are sentenced to hell - that's how
high God's standards are of moral perfection because God is holy and righteous, there is not one sin in Him.
For someone to be justified before holy God they have to be sinless, that's why everyone need Jesus Christ
      - for He lived a sinless life, died on the cross and rose from the dead on the third day.
      2) Sin, good deeds. None of us are good in God’s eyes, because for God good means moral perfection. We all
have broken God’s commandments, we all have sinned in our lives so none of us
are good. ‘’For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is
guilty of breaking all of it.’’ (James 2:10). Our carnal mind is hostile to God; it does not submit
to God's moral law and it never will (Romans 8:7). We hate the thought of God for the same reason a criminal
hates a policeman - we know we have sinned against God and are guilty of it and we don't want to be damned.
No good works will ever save you. You can't earn salvation by good works, because God will judge us for our sin.
      3) Jesus Christ paid the fine. Good News is that Jesus Christ lived a perfect, holy, sinless life and He died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
He was buried and He was raised from the dead on the third day according to the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever
believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.’’ (John 3:16)
''For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God -
not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
Jesus said ‘’it is finished’’ (John 19:30) just before He died on the cross, which means He paid the fine for our sins
(past, present, future) to be forgiven only IF we repent and trust in Him.
      4) How to be saved? This is how you can get saved from sin and hell - repent and trust in Jesus Christ. Get to know Him by reading God's Word and pray for the Holy Spirit to seal you. So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.” (Luke 11:13)
      5) Repentance ''What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!'' (Romans 6:15)
''Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out'' (Acts 3:19)
Repentance is a turning away from sin and all evil works, and it always results in changed behavior (Luke 3:8).
Biblically, a person who repents does not continue willfully in sin.
While sorrow from sin is not equivalent to repentance, it is certainly an element of scriptural repentance (2 Corinthians 7:10).
Do not play a hypocrite. ''God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all.
If we claim to have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.'' (1 John 1:5-6)
      6) Born-again with a new heart. (John 3:3) Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again."
If you have repented and have genuine faith in Jesus Christ then you will receive the gift of Holy Spirit and be born-again spiritually.
When you believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance
until the redemption of those who are God’s possession - to the praise of His glory. (Ephesians 1:13-14)
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. (John 3:36)
      7) New creation in Christ. ''You will know them by their fruits'' (Matthew 7)
If you have been truly born-again with the Holy Spirit and He has regenerated your heart, you will desire righteousnes -
to do what is good and righteous in God's eyes, to seek God everyday in His Word and prayer, to strengthen your relationship with God.
You will no longer desire to willfully continue living in sin but will want to obey God out of your love for Him because of His amazing grace
revealed to us through the death and resurrection of His Son.
''Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.'' (2 Corinthians 5:17)
''For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.'' (Eph 2:10)
You will have a testimony - of what your life had been before and how has it changed now when you have surrendered it to Lord Jesus Christ.
      8) Baptisement. As a declaration and affirmation of your faith in Jesus Christ, get baptised in water because He commanded us to do so.
In John 3:5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.''
''Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit'' (Matthew 28:19)
''Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.'' (Acts 2:41)
''And this water symbolizes the baptism that now saves you also - not the removal of dirt from the body,
but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God - through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,'' (1 Peter 3:21)
''We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that,
just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.'' (Romans 6:4)
''Having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God,
who raised him from the dead.'' (Colossians 2:12)
Please get right with God and get to know Jesus Christ personally today before it’s too late, because there’s not much time left!
"But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.’’ (Mark 13:32)
Get to know Christ through God's Word - Bible. At first I recommend reading Gospel of John and book of Romans. God bless you!
Jeremiah 29:13 - ''You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.''

I totally agree and am glad to that you lived to pass this on to others. So many people go through their day worrying about everything their mind conjures up at will or planning for 5, 10 or even 20 years down the road and don’t consider the moment that they are living. Instead they wait to find joy & peace another day they might not ever see.

People's lives feel constantly between two focus points, a past and some future point, but the focus is still on one or both of those points and rarely in the now.
Sam's quote is analogous to Alan Watts, "A person who thinks all the time has nothing to think about except thoughts. So, he loses touch with reality and lives in a world of illusion.", and that "...you can't live at all unless you can live fully now."
Even Seneca had these similar words, "The greatest obstacle to living is expectancy, which hangs upon tomorrow and loses today. You are arranging what is in Fortune's control and abandoning what lies in yours."
Despite meditating daily, I still have my moments where I find it difficult to live more presently, either lost in rumination or too preoccupied with what's happened or what is going to happen - although I'm better than I was. Still, it's challenging to shake off the feeling of being between to fixed points and just be.

How to Conquer Fear - A Kabbalist’s Advice
Just let the fear go. Don't think about what will happen in the next moment.
We know nothing about what is truly going on in our lives. It is thus best for us to just let go. We hold such potential within us. Letting go of our fears requires some training, but we need it.
Fear comes from our will to control situations we find ourselves in, and when we cannot control them. When we let go of fear, we then seemingly control the situations from another end. For instance, take one of the most common fears: the fear of death. Our death is inevitable. Accepting the fact that we will certainly die, we can then imagine how the world will continue developing after we are gone, agree with that picture, and let go of any current fear we have.
There are no set steps, however, for how to let go of fear. It is different for each and every person. Some people start thinking along the lines of "What will happen to the world after I’m gone?” “How will my loved ones and my relatives continue their lives?” “What will happen with my inheritance?” and “How will my legacy unfold?” Faced by these questions, we need to make another correction-of our attitude toward life and death, which is behind our every fear.
We should transform our fears into an absolute surrender to the will of nature-the will bestow that created and sustains us-which requires us to make a certain kind of effort. We might still have to go through a lot of frightening moments until we reach the end of our earthly path, so we should try to calm ourselves down.
The laws of nature that created and sustain us, and which we are ultimately being led to discover, are in a state of absolute calmness and rest. We should thus aim to emulate nature’s calmness.
We are calm when we are not worried about what will happen in the next moment. It is a difficult point to express because it is not simply about flowing with the currents of life. On the contrary, we need to rely on the laws of nature that operate on us at every moment, which control everything and everyone.
Since we live within fixed and determined laws of nature that are in total control over our lives, then we have nothing to worry about. Do we want to interfere with the laws that are driving everyone and everything through corrections? Of course we don't. We then might as well calm down and move on with our lives.
That state of calmness indicates agreement. It means that we agree with the laws of nature, which is quite difficult, because we always want to hold back, check what is happening in nature’s plans, and argue that maybe things should play out a bit differently.

It make sense that Sam Harris would promote the practice of mindfulness considering that he's a secular Buddhist. However he didn't specify how often one should focus on the present moment (and for how long) instead of being lost in thought. I think that this question about the frequency and duration of being mindful can't be easily answered.

I think you don't have to rationalize this into a timetable. Mindfulness is a skill that you can obtain by practice (meditation) and then use as frequently as you need. I don't like the concept of "secular buddhist" but yes, you can incorporate such practices into a normal life.

    • @daesfacetus7184
      @daesfacetus7184 3 года назад +1

@@levs298 If being constantly lost in thought is supposed to be so detrimental and mindfulness is the best antidote to the fear of death, then this question about the ideal frequency and duration of mindfulness practice (at least on average) deserves to be looked into. There are plenty of people who identify as secular Buddhists which means that they adhere to a
modified Buddhist doctrine with no religious aspects. You don't have to adopt this label in order to perform certain Buddhist practices though.

    • @levs298

@@daesfacetus7184 There are actually very similar practices everywhere - in hinduism, sufism and even christian orthodox mysticism (check out 'hesychasm' and 'theoria', it's fascinating to see something like this in a christian context). Mindfulness is not inherently buddhist and might as well be made secular.
This is why I don't like this "secular buddhist" thing. It doesn't have to be associated with buddhism. Just felt like I needed to elaborate.

If the present is all there is, and you should cherish and embrace the present, and there is no future, no god, no afterlife, no eternity... just the present... That's all you have... then wouldn't you be even more terrified to permanently lose it? Is it really so easy and simple to accept, that everything that you cherish including yourself and very essence will be obliterated for eternity in a blink of an instance? That my friend is very unsettling even for the most callous of people. I am not saying it is impossible not to fear death, I'm saying its not as simple or as easy as Harris makes it sound.
