Empathy and sympathy are often used interchangeably. In this video, Vince explains the subtle difference that can transform how you relate to your team.
Actually he did it wrong. There’s many different definitions people keep using. Sympathy is feeling “with” someone . Feeling sorry for them. Empathy is understanding how they feel but not feeling it as well.
The problem with relating is that you're example may not be the equivalent of the person (in their eyes) you're attempting to empathize with. In that case, it can seem contrived and even make matter worse -- providing proof that you have no idea what they're really feeling. For example, can a white middle-class man know what it feels like to be a black man from the ghetto living in America? Can a man know how it feels to have a miscarriage? Sometimes its better to leave empathy out, and just stick with sympathy even though it may not be as effective but the safer choice.
Wow!! So refreshing to see someone being totally real...themselves!!! Gives me hope and that empath vs co dependent info me greater hope because I fall into the former so when the shit finally hit the fan in a meltdown of rage I locked the door totally amazed and immediately set about to find meaning to the preposterous...that’s when came about the info on the narc!!! I haven’t looked back!!! Freedom at last!!!
Would you want your dentist to feel empathy when he's doing your root-canal? Determining and implementing solutions requires an objective eye. Empathy clouds the situation with your emotional interpretation of the situation. Sympathy allows you to see a problem without being effected by it. This allows you to asses it accurately.
Actually, it is the other way around. empathy at least in a clinical sense is more of a cognitive response. A person own emotion is used to inform you of how the other person maybe feeling. It is not to commiserate with the other.
That was the best way to wrap up this video ! 🤘 I like that you nailed this explanation on the head , but made a quick witty quote at the end that felt humorous yet humble. I really feel that in everything I do. There's no status in knowledge or self development. Making fun of the implications of veing able to thoroughly explain a subject matter. Curious what you actually meant by the statement. I know that's a little off topic, but I relate to that. Again, great video my friend. You had a great way of explaining Empathy/ summarizing it. 🤘🤘 Keep Shred'n
Empathy when seeked does not depend on response. Seeking is assuming and conforming. Empathizing is responding to empathy. Empathizing is being unassuming.
Sympathy is similar to emotional empathy. And it’s questionable as to whether a leader wants to ‘feel with’ a whole team, department, division etc of people. what’s your thoughts on cognitive empathy which is a more accessible way of connecting?. Empathy is more nuanced than “connecting with “ and more complex than a simple comparison with sympathy.
I don't think it's negative.. I think the feelings you have in empathy are much stronger and deeper than the ones we express in sympathy so empathy can build more solid relations but still sympathy is very important as by nature we can't relate to every pain we meet so imagining them can do the same effect
theultimateninja Pity is sympathy, sympathy is trying to put yourself in their situation while empathy is having been in that situation and knowing How it feels.
Empathy: I don't feel so good, I got gas from something I ate. Dude, I understand, I just ate a bowl of chili pepper 🌶 and onion 🌰 bean dip with jalapeños... I'm about to reach for Kaopectate - want some!!??!! Sympathy: I don't feel so good, I got gas from something I ate. Dude, did you just pass gas (dammit)!!??!! Look, I love you as family, but you got to get out of my house - right now!!
You can't practice empathy! You either have it or you don't. You can't pretend to care when you don't actually care, and are just acting like you do, going through the actions and motions of Empathy without any real emotions in you is what psychopaths do, to be on every bodies good side. That's called being a hypocrite. The best thing you can do is keep it real, if you care you care and if you don't, why act like you do. Stay true to yourself and who you are. No one wants someone to pretend like they actually care about them if they really don't care at all. That's dishonest, and it's a lie and we all hate liars. Even liars hate liars that lie to them. So just be honest about gow you feel. And if people don't like you for your honesty, then that's not the group of people that you would fit well with, and you need to find a new circle of friends. I'm sure if you're a psychopath that lacks real empathy, you can find other psychopaths that lack empathy as well. Just remember, the law is not on the side of the psychopath, so empathy or not, you better behave and noy cause anyone any harm in any way, because Karma doesn't play around when it comes to rewards and punishments. You will reap what you sow in this life.
You most definetly can practice empathy to a certain extenct. Put it like this: Lets say you lost a really loveable son and you really know the pain and How that feels. Now imagine your friend lost his daughter just after you lost your son. You can relate and be compassionate because you have felt the same way they feel and you can cry with them you understand? So i believe that empathy is based on past experiences, the more you have gone through the more empathy you have for people going through the same thing. Better example: If a friend just got a new iPhone and you have an iPhone and remember the joy and the satisfying feeling of opening that phone box, you can share that compassion with your friend and that way you are being empathetic. It’s basically built on experience and it dosent have to be bad ones as i showed in the second example. All love 🙏
You can naturally learn to be more empathetic by living through life. There is a lot of things I don't really care much than I used to. It all changed as I experienced more things in life. Meeting people, losing loved ones and failures in life.
Dr. To-Flu Empathy is basically feeling the same way in a relatable way. You don’t have to care about someone you can still relate to them. But the question is If you Will express this empathy or not?
I can see where you are coming from. Most people don't care about other people's issues because they might have too many issues themselves. I do believe people can practice empathy though. If someone is telling you something sad/tragic/crazy about their life and you find yourself not caring-start imagining if that circumstance was YOUR life and happening to YOU. This is one way to practice empathy. If you do this enough and force yourself to possibly see where they are coming from, for some people it could change them. For some people this could work-for some maybe not. What do you think? Is it only considered empathy if the person has ACTUALLY gone through the same thing as the other person?
John Paul Kakos Well maybe.. it depends on How well you know the person aswell to figure out their mindset and adapt to it in a specific ”Empathic moment”. But i think real true empathy is when you have experienced it for yourself, and empathy doesnt have to be used in sad situations. It could simply be used for day to day stuff, like If someone tells you he/she got a new phone, you Will probably know How that feels since most people own a smartphone theese days. And you can show empathy by describing the emotions and thoughts you went through when you got your phone. But i do agree with you when you say ”it depends where they come from” because If for example someone got beaten and the parents misstreated him badly, i don’t think he would try to show emotions to his friends since he is in a fearful mindset and don’t want to open himself up to anyone. Instead, he would get attracted to fights and start fighting because it relates to his childhood And If you have a father for example who didn’t show emotions to you, youre probably not going to show muxh emotions either.
The best example of Empathy is Jesus Christ. In order for him to be an advocate of us Sinners before God, he came to earth and went through everything that we go through and does relate with the struggles of obeying and living according to God's word.
Bad example of empathy. Just because people made fun of your ears doesn't mean you know what it felt like for him to be made fun of his nose. Empathy is taking the experience of being fun of your ears to inform you "possibly" how it made the person to be made fun of of his knows. In a tentative posture. "You get tired of being made fun of your nose?" or "after awhile it becomes hurtful to be reminded of your nose?" This is all done tentatively. This allow the other person to draw internally to reflect and either agree with your or correct how they are really feeling. They couldn't have verbalized this without your empathic statement.
Sorry but you lack empathy. Empathy is understanding that other people aren't you and don't always feel the same way you would in the same situations. For example I love it when women boss me around. But I'm empathetic enough to realize most women hate being bossed around. I understand that other people are not me and don't feel the same way about things that I do.
U made it so simple - I feel “for you” vs “with you” ; thanks!
Very good and funny videos bring a great sense of entertainment!
Thanks for this valuable video.
Very helpful , thank you !

@@semperfitdeliis So are you saying that you're using your (emotional) interpretation of events to determine how someone else is feeling?
Perfectly explained it short. Awesome!
