I made a Dark Elf Enchanter, way back in 2001, and he's been my primary ever since. My very first ever attempt at character creation was an Erudite Magician, and within 30 minutes I'd had a belly full of stumbling around Toxxulia Forest, running headlong into death because I couldn't see my hand in front of my face. Dwarves were too short and didn't have an affinity for real magic, Gnomes were Dwarves with progeria, High Elves were too stuffy, Wood Elves too hippy, Half Elves too wishy-washy, and Humans were Erudites without the landing strip above their nose. Went Agnostic Dark Elf Enchanter, ruled EQ in the early days when CC was king, sobbed uncontrollably through all the Charm nerfs and Clarity demotions, then finally changed my pants and grew a pair. Turns out 4-boxing with an Enchanter, battle Cleric, Shaman, and Druid is quite entertaining, and became famous in my Guild for 2-boxing the Enchanter/Cleric during raids without ever missing a CHeal rotation call. Still haven't made a Gnome. I just can't bring myself to inhabit one of those twitchy, melon-headed nose goblins. 😱
For a beginner starting on the new TLS, I have a few pieces of advice. #1 Learn how to make and use an assist hotkey. Assisting becomes very important and you dont want to be known as the guy always messing things up. #2 Start off as a Magician. Its the perfect class to start. You solo very well, aren't gear dependent, and are a welcome addition to any group. #3 Dont blow you plat on gear. Save it for spells. If the server is a few weeks old , it isn't even a horrible idea to make it easy on yourself and buy a Krono and sell it for plat so you have for later levels when spells get expensive. #4 Try to get in an active guild as soon as you can. Guilds are great for groups, getting gear from raids, and even answering all your questions. #5 Let your friends and family know you are going to be busy for at least the next 3-6 months.
I'm a new player who briefly dabbled in P99 in 2019 and got more into it in the past few weeks and I'm excited to play Oakwynd. Same good advice here. I'm learning new things even after studying the past few weeks.
I havent played in a very long time, but to new players my best advice i can give is this is a marathon, not a sprint. There are so many ins and outs of this game that it will take a long while to understand everything. I just saw the video this guy made about eq3 and it got my nostalgia juices flowing ao im reinstalling eq1 for the first time in like 12 years so im greatful guys like him are still making content.
Find a guild when you are new to the game. That will help you considerably! Most people/guilds are gently players willing to help out new player with guidance, help and social interaction.
After jumping between half a dozen alts a few months ago after getting into p99 for the first time in a decade, my advice to new players who aren’t 100% sure of what they want to make is to start with a Druid. Druids early on can fill just about any role between their nukes, roots/snares, and healing, plus the priest classes aren’t terrible at melee starting out either.
For TLPs, even if you're buying 100% Weight Reduction bags, consider putting 5-10 points into strength. Especially if you're a caster. You'll cap your important stats super soon anyways and being able to carry extra loot or wear heavier gear on a new server is super helpful from a quality of life perspective. Once you understand the systems, everquest is a high risk game, but its not a difficult game. You can put all of your points into dexterity as a mage and you'll still be awesome. Strength is the stat that affects how you play the game the most.
I've been a MMO enjoyer since Ultima Online back when i was 5 years old, and have played WoW in its entirety, but never thought about giving EQ a try, i'm excited to say i'm officially going to give this game a fair shot as of today

The Iksar Shaman was my favorite character that I ever played, but Everquest was my most hated game that I ever played. Such is life... Dark Age of Camelot is my most favorite game that I ever played, and the Cleric is the 2nd most favorite character I ever played... Such is life... If an Iksar Shaman-like-character existed in DAoC, then I'd still be playing DAoC.
It feels like a million years ago, but I made a mod for EQ that seemed to go over well at the time. It was an in-game guide named Numgrak's Slowing Guide. It was small but it was my contribution to the community. I think my Shaman is still parked inside Plane of Time as i never got my Time's Antithesis clicky slow stick. I appreciate the videos!
6 healer group? Two clerics, one specced as a 'battle cleric' who has a really shiny hammer and a love of the Yaulp spell! The rest spread through shammy and druid for support and damage and especially snare. Fear, fear, FEAR!

In group content any melee class can tank in later xpacks. Occasionally damage will scale poorly and you wont be able too untill gear upgrades. For most melee classes Dex is king as it gives a % damage increase where strength seems to scale pretty awful imo
I use to play EQ back when it first came out even before Kunark and loved every minute. I tried to get back into the game a few months ago and was very disheartened to see old villages I spent hours with my friends in completely empty and only 1 or 2 people occasionally run through.
You are trying to do groups, the best thing to role-play is an extrovert. Play matchmaker and reach out to people. It doesn't mean you have to be leader of a group just to find new members of the group or to make yourself a new member. Reputation Stacks up and then the next thing you know you don't have to look for a group anymore you get 7 offers
Are there any servers that are newb friendly? I played EQ for years when it first came out. No clue what server I'd be on today after all the merge and purge stuff. I'd like to play again, Oakwynd isn't what I"m looking for. Thoughts on servers that might have oldie/newby friendly guilds?
I'd suggest hopping on Oakwynd, it just launched and there are definitely going to be some players and guilds that will be newb friendly. It's still very early in the progression server timeline (it only launched in May) so you won't have to do much catching up.

I would say Shadow knight is actually the best tank in the game. Warrior may have meant to be but - SK is the true master of tanking. Does anyone else remember people calling Lamentation - lamination or Lammy?
Last I knew, the rule was that in all cases except the very hardest of raid bosses, SK is king. Better aggro generation, self-healing via taps, and way more than enough mitigation that is only overwhelmed if the target does so much damage that the extra 5% of a warrior becomes required.
@@danpitzer765 Agreed - Certain situations warrior is better. But SK is top for sure. Aggro generation through abilities is far superior to a warriors. Hands down.
@@ehrgeiz5649 And people forget that the SK's aggro/dot cycle includes debuffs that tone down the mob's damage a bit. Sure, they're functionally 'lesser' version of necro plague spells effects, and necro power taps, for most of the game, but come on...not only is it unlikely you're running with a necro to have those anyway, but it means that SK is useful even if you've got another tank. SKs are also the highest DPS of the true tanks, so again, if you are using another tank, the SK isn't dead weight, they just transition to DPS and focus on being a deathmage with a huge freaking sword. But people also forget that there are minor tanks too. They think of Monk and Ranger as pure DPS, often abandoning them if they realize their off-tanking role just became needed, instead of giving them the support they need to hold the line until the CC/Tank can get things back under control.
My experience is mostly from PoP/GoD era (and before) so might be out of date but our raid leader was an SK and he did probably the majority of our tanking. He was an amazing tank. Did some pulling as well and worked great in conjunction with our monk pullers. There were definitely more than a few fights you really needed a warrior for max mitigation (fights like AoW that just had to much dmg spikes) but our SK pushed the limits of what many thought was possible for SK. Then we also used paladins for AE tanking with their AE stuns and even monks for offtanking or main tanking occasionally. I think we even used a ranger to tank a few times with weapon shield. This is one of the amazing things about EQ. It gives you so many different tools and every class overlaps with some other classes so you rarely get 1 cookie cutter way to solve problems. Raid and group configurations and therefor strategies can vary wildly. We even used druids in our complete heal rotations despite them only having a 75% CH. We just put them between 2 clerics in the rotation and adjusted the CH timing of the clerics following a druid accordingly. It wasn't ideal but worked (usually lol).
I had planned on doing that a while back. I got from planes of power through either God or oow. I'll try to revisit it, sometimes the research is a little spotty and my memory is fuzzy

I'm sent the feedback in once but I feel like they need to be more support for the idea starting a TLP at level 50 planes of power unlocked. It's been my experience that socializing happens more with getting people geared up. Because you move from one spot to another.
New players need to get plane of time raiding asap. Worked out to give 2 months of a lot of fun, 60 marketed and result in more live player recruitment
dont think you need to use every single ability that you are given , many spells and abilities were just the developers trying things out cause they are cool not necisarily because theyll give you the maximum amount of return for your level.
The best thing that I'd suggest is finding a newbie friendly guild, usually on a progression sever at launch (like the one launching today) The Everquest Reddit group is pretty helpful at times, too, and you can find guilds on the official Everquest.com forums.
I think there was some consideration for some sort of spinoff for mobile years ago but nothing concrete and no mention of vr. The closest I think would be trying to get eq to work on the steam deck but the controls would be difficult.
you should promote the test server. I only played p99 and never played eq live because it's p2w. But the test server you get all the aa's so not p2w except maybe the extra merc party members you can buy but they kinda suck anway. As someone who only played p99 and never played eq live, i was pleasantly surprised by modern eq. I can see it sucks more for social/group players, but I only play solo and it's way better for a solo player.
Why is it that every time I watch a video about EverQuest, there's some part with a bunch of players flying in the middle of the battle, as if it were the release of Cyberpunk 2077?

Unfortunately new players don't last because most people are max level and very few people level or group at the lower levels. Most people box instead of grouping. I hear it all the time oh they need to come up with a game like EQ. No they don't people should play together.
Don't think too much about if a class is meta, most needed or less optimized. Look at the classes and pick what you're going to have fun with.

New players are a myth. It's the same people joining every server. And... If you miss the boat on the server launch, you're playing by yourself.

As a Enc I usually find myself telling a new group to assist the main tank!! CC life can be stressful but it is the best !!

Get bags. Bind soul. Crowd control is king. If your bored try pulling. Tanks have most upkeep in gear.

'Magic' prefix is now gone, so go to town with whatever weapon you want, no need for them mesh gloves for monks :D

Would love to see a series that hits all of the additions to the game throughout each of the expansions. EQ is a far cry from what it was in vanilla
