Hey Elliot, I'm from Switzerland and the pictures you showed were in front of a swiss coop showing the weekly discounts. This is definitely a swiss unit from a Mediamarkt :D
The power plug is Swiss too
I was about to say its german, interesting.
Die Schweiz hat aber die gleichen Stromanschlüsse wie Österreich und Deutschland, oder?
@@fiotux The Adapter Plug on the end was a SN 441011, which is only really used in CH. Meanwhile Germany and Austria are using Typ C (Eurostecker) or Typ F (Schuko). this would also explain why one of the images had French subtext.
@@fiotux ne wir haben einen eigenen Steckertyp namens J
The store is a "Media Markt" btw. One of the biggest store for all kind of electronics. What a great find!
Watching this as a German is hilarious because this thing came from Japan to Eliot.
@@MegaManNeo sie senden wohl immer von japan statt den nintendos in der Region
@@lightmaxifrvr Oder die werden von den Nintendo Euro Zentren gesammelt, und dann zurück nach Japan geschickt
@@MegaManNeo I think what happened is that Nintendo called back the units and have them shipped to Japan to discard them, and then someone in Japan got a hold of some of them.
@@lightmaxifrvr We get it. You speak german, so do i. This is an english comment section though... SMH.
The fact that a Wii Power Brick is what is used to power this is crazy, though not totally unexpected.
Nintendo tends to reuse rechargeable batteries for devices like the newer Game & Watch's which use Joycon batteries.
If I remember correctly, the Switch Pro Controller also uses the same batteries as the 3DS
@@joweber7492 the Wii U pro controller does as well iirc
The 2DS at 13:31 is a different kiosk. There are two ways to tell. The first is that if you look very closely you can see the metal braided cable leading away from the 2DS that yours doesn't have. The second is really really obvious if you think about it for a little while 🤣
Exactly what I was thinking
What’s the second reason?
@@rachelcookie321its so obvious, just think about it
Oh is it the fact the DS is being used to take the photo so it can’t be that DS Elliot has.
And also their two completely different models, that too…
Every picture has a story to tell. To make a film based on what this 3DS experienced would be fascinating. Who installed it? The people who played it. Plus the day it left the kiosk. It is both heartbreaking, and amazing to think about.
I can't believe that the photos were still on there! Interesting 3ds history for sure. I can't wait to see the others.
beautiful video, this video is exactly what taking a picture on a kiosk 3ds meant back in the day, some poor soul finding it years later
14:00 Looking at the store signing I would say it's probably Media Markt, a big media store chain (we also have them here in the Netherlands).
Yes you're right it's a Media Markt. :)
I played the living crap out of these kiosks whenever I was at an electronics store that had them back when I didn't have a 3DS myself... That brings back memories...
This was like finding a time capsule

Hey Elliot, just wanted to let you know that I used to be near a store that had something similar, and I have the specific software you mentioned "wasn't on there". They were game demos that would lock the 3DS into Play Mode (meaning you couldn't exit to the home menu and you couldn't turn the system off without a certain code of button inputs). If you were to hack that 3DS, I could DM you the files for the Kiosk apps if you'd like, or you can keep that 3DS pure. Either way, just thought I'd tell you that there are special game demos and apps specifically made for these devices. (The one I played back in 2011 had Super Mario 3D as it was called at the time on it. Pretty cool demo)
it would be awesome if Elliot hacked this 3DS and dumped all the special software in it for preservation
hey did you know it's surprisingly easy to hack a nintendo 3ds?
@@Loch32 anyone can do it!
Hey man, is there a way you could sent them to me? I have a hacked 3ds and would love to try them out actually :p
@@rockrheadHD Do you have Discord or Twitter? I don't wanna get banned of RUclips for distributing ROMs through it
German Here. This 3DS is from a shop called MediaMarkt which is a big electronics store chain here. I actually saw kiosks like this back in the day.
There is also some French text in a few photos and on some labels throughout the Video so i assume it is actually from Switzerland because they have MediaMarkt´s too.
A bit weird though is that it advertises the New 3ds XL but has a regular Console attached.
The text on the front says:
Große Bildschirme (big screens)
Verbesserter 3d Effekt (enhanced 3d effect)
Erweiterte Steuerung (expanded controls. whatever that means, maybe because of the c stick)
Verbesserte CPU (Better CPU)
amiibo Support durch NFC Funktion (amiibo support via NFC)
All of that points to it being somehow mixed up on its way to Japan.
Edit: Also it has the 3 pin type-c swiss powerplug instead of the 2 pin Schuko (Schutzkontakt) powerplugs in Germany.
This was massively impressive thanks so much for showing this off!
One thing you could do with the SD card is run a file recovery program like Recuva to maybe recover maybe extra photos and maybe even some files that were exclusive on that display DS.
oh yeah, because maybe there were more pictures and staff of the store would clear them monthly or people who did tests with it on the kiosk deleted them on the spot after seeing the result.
@@SectorfiveYT exactly! That's why people should also not sell their hard drives, SD cards, phones etc. unless the content on storage device was properly deleted(encrypted), luckily there are softwares that can do that for you.
@@BenjaminHari you can always overwrite HDD with all zero's.
@@SectorfiveYT yeah that's why I said there is a software for things like that.
There is no doubt in my mind that this wasn't in a mediamarkt. Really cool stuff.
amazing time-capsule with those photos! super cool!
This definitely came from Switzerland. The power adapter is Swiss, and the store looks more like MediaMarkt, although as some others have written, some of the photos might be from a part of Coop. The first picture of the store you showed reminded me more of Müller, because at a time the gaming section looked identical. Maybe it's possible it was moved from one store to another.
Yeah I was thinking "that is no Germany plug on that kiosk".
How fun! I never played on any of the store kiosks, I think I was afraid a store worker would try to sell something to me and I am terribly shy, so I avoided it all. Yay for a fun video!
As a heads-up, when you're rewiring a plug, you should ensure the ground lead (green-yellow) is longer than hot and neutral. That way if the cable is torn out, the hot and neutral will disconnect before the ground.
As a collector, i can tell you any kiosk is going to be your prized possession. Especially the 3ds one. Its so well made, looks gorgeous. Hand made, beautiful work.
Deja Entendu
love these Kiosks so much! glad you got it working and really excited to have you and your shenanigans back! very exciting
hi, I think that that kiosok used to be displayed in a luxembourgish shop. The ads in the ad stands in the 6th to last photo have the same style as our national supermarket "Cactus" ads and all the text in the photos are in french but the DS was set in german which are the 2 main languages we use here in luxembourg.
we need the on air sign back. the studio is empty without it
I'm so glad you're back in action! Some of the things you show us I've never seen before, and I can't wait to see the restoration of that big 3ds kiosk!
Welcome back! I was so happy to see ur channel in my feed today!!!!
i remember when i was a kid and I went to target and saw one of these, and the luigies mansion demo was amazing especially since I had a dsi at the time.
What year?
@@Betsyboob like 2012 or something
When I was younger I remember going to my local Argos and playing on the wiiu kiosk they had while my family buy stuff there
Pretty cool and a time capsule of photos. I haven't seen actual kiosks since the 360 (early on) in my region never seen them since. So always cool to see the countries that had kiosks still.
Good to see you back! Really enjoying the restoration of unique stuff, keep up the good work!
Thats the swiss Version of the Small 3DS Kiosk. Ive own the Big Version with a 3DS XL. First it had a 3DS but it broke, Nintendo them send a Guy who replaced the Metal Frame and put a XL in. After 5 years of instore use, my Boss gave the Kiosk and a Wii U Kiosk to me.
Great to have you back on the main channel! Im a fan for life my friend
The store it was in is a mediamarkt i live in the netherlands and it is one of the biggest tech stores here.
Lovely work! So happy to see you back Elliot. Thank you for the great content, and hope to see more
Hey Elliot, welcome back!!!
Been following you on your second channel, but very happy to see you are finally active on your main too!
Always happy to receive a notification saying we got a new video!
Very interesting video, I can't wait for you to show more about these other ones!
Also, don't forget to put the "On Air" neon thing back on the wall! 😂
13:15 My boi, Jibanyan enjoying Face Raiders.
Aahhhhhh this brings me back some memories! I remember trying a demo 3DS at a Courts in Singapore, that had Steel Diver (one of the launch titles) on it and I don't think the game was ever swapped out. It was set up in the same style of kiosk. At the time, the 3DS didn't have enough titles to win me over, but it was the first time i experienced it in person.
Edit: I thought it was at a Popular store, but I think I misremembered and I think it was actually at a Courts store in the city.
Thank goodness 🙏 I've been rewatching videos but it was worth it, welcome back
Return of the king, and he's only slightly more unhinged.
How good to see you again man... Hope many videos ahead from you. Cheers
Hang on, the wii brick is only to run the leds?! I'd downsize to any old 5v 1a adapter to save space
Well when you have a surplus of wii power bricks, it'd be cheaper to just use those
5v LED strips also generate more heat than a 12v set. Its possible that they factored this in
Glad to have you back Elliot! Great find on the Kiosk! I used to work for Gamestation here in the UK and most kiosks were janky as all hell inside. Our 3DS display was very similar to this, but I cannot remember for the life of me whether it had a demo cartridge or not.
I can't believe how much your channel has grown, been here since 20ish k, congrats!
I saw a few of the Switch Lite kiosks at PAX West a few years ago, they had three out on display for the main colors a few weeks before the Switch Lite was released.
Welcome back. Have enjoyed your second channel while you were "gone"
The wires in your plug need to be all slightly different lengths. This is a safety feature of a British plug. The Earth is the longest, then Neutral then the shortest would be Live.
The reason for this is so if the wire was pulled on hard enough for the wires to pull out, it would pull live out 1st leaving earth until last
Awesome stuff Elliot! Glad you're back making main channel videos again!
The name of the store is « MediaMarkt » and judging by the photos it might be in Belgium as it’s written in french and we also speak dutch and we have a small % of of the country that speaks german. Good find!
Edit: As i read in others comments, it’s in Switzerland 😊
look at the three pronged plug though, do you use those in belgium? i thought it was from switzerland which would also explain the french
@@2small4theMall ye its from ch since there is a sale thingy from a swiss Store if i saw right
Het is denk ik een Zwitserse model want die Duits staat groter dan het Frans of Nederlands zou moeten zijn.
@@2small4theMall We indeed don’t use those plugs. In Italy they use the same plugs. We use german ones. But I read in others comments that it is indeed in Switzerland so not in Belgium!
Good for you man! I really like your videos, keep them like that!!! 👍🏻
I always slap down a towel when I work on pointy things to prevent scritch scratch.
13:57 This looks very much like Saturn or MediaMarkt - an electronic store in Germany (both are the same company).
MediaMarkt is now pretty much all over Europe afaik
it's swiss for sure, the plug and the french text on one of the photos, where the rest of the system was german
Nice, I love that you're back!
I've been following your second channel and housing adventures in the meantime and couldn't wait - keep it up, I love it!
Great video and welcome back! You seem to be much happier! Can't wait to see more like this!
What a joy to see that green wall again!
Also, now I really wish I had a GBA kiosk like the one I used to play Metroid at while I was on break at my department store job in high school.
Wait, that's not even a German kiosk!
It's a Swiss one, they probably didn't change the text since the only difference would he the use of the 'ß' since in Switzerland we use 'ss' instead!
Why I think it's a Swiss kiosk:
The power plug
Edit:
I'm writing this while watching the video
That 'exit sign' visible in one of the photos even shows some advertisment for a Swiss supermarket (namly Coop) so yes, 100% sure this was displayed in Switzerland!
How neat to know just a little bit more of this units story
Hi elliot, iv worked for company's that do shop displays for retailers. Ultimately the manufacturer of the item, in your case nintendo, would contact a 3rd party company that makes shop displays, explaining what they wanted functionality wise, this company would make a display module to the specifications required, then a 4th party would be employed to go and do the shop displays and set up. Iv been involved with the 3rd and 4th party company's before & also done exhibition displays but unfortunately nothing as exciting as nintendo. Mainly home security systems. So Ultimately its almost home made one offs (made in dozens or maybe hundreds in the case of nintendo) to look pretty on the shelf to encourage customers to buy the product.
P.S. we've also updated previous display modules, ie, was selling 1080i models updated to display 4k models.
i remember that those where a lot in müller and mediamarkt, its so cool to see those today
Glad to see you back! Great video :)
that gba e-reader looks FIRE! ill have to mod a gba with a colour scheme like that!!
You have no clue how much i want a WiiU Kiosk lol. Its one of the most interesting Kiosk systems imo, it had a Menu very different from the actual WiiU (with you scrolling through the artworks of the games) and the games were modified so you could only play for so long (but it would still save; i plaied a bit Mario Maker on one and levels from previous users were still on there)
It was very interesting for sure and i really wanna try it again tbh
I remember everytime we went to target, I would run to electronics and play on the 3ds for an hour.
You look so happy in your new house doing videos again. Can't wait to see more
Happy to see ya back!
Damn you got a bunch of kiosks. Can't wait to see that big two player one when it's fully restored.
The end of the plug looks very much like one used in Switzerland!
Mediamarkt probably did not think their unit would show up somewhere in the UK years later
So glad to see you! Glad we got something super fun video!
Missed the last one announcing your return, but I’m glad you’re back. This was a lot of fun.
He never went anywhere on his second channel.
@@Heymrk yep, but the content is different
As a child in Germany I remember going to a store called Müller and hoping that nobody was playing on the 3DS. There was a special version of the Resorts game and I loved it... The kiosk looks just like the one I played on, very cool!
the unfocused picture in the back hurt my brain, i'm too used in the old setting, but welcome back!
Welcome back, Elliot! Glad to see you back on the main channel!!
Its a Media Markt Store! and the 3 Pinned Plug you chopped off is from Switzerland, usually UK has the same voltage like we do have in Germany and Switzerland.
after seeing the plug of the power brick, it looks like this was in Switzeland and not Germany
Kiosks, other promotional items and dev hardware usually have to be returned to Nintendo when they are no longer used.
The state probably went to NoE which is based in Germany and then from there to Nintendo in Japan for disposal.
Apparently it somehow ended up in an auction there
btw.
The store in the pictures is a Media Markt, which is a fairly large electronic "specialist" chain of stores in Germany
Welcome back, Olliet!!! Excited for the future of retro future!! Lovely video and nice addition to your collection!! Love to see it :D that two player stand seems nuts!!
große Bildschirme (Big Screens). The card indicates it's for an "New" XL, but you're probably right that this was a modular system they used and just installed a bracket to hold the larger versions, etc.
I actually used some of these here in germany. Saturn had Pilotwings at launch, Mario 3D Land a little bit later and the local "Real" store had two units with Mario Kart 7.
Saturn had a small blue one, Real had a small blue and one grey XL iirc.
Your unit is pretty interesting. Seems like it was first used in france and then moved to germany. The kiosk is authentic.
They all started out with the 3DS branding and got the "New 3DS" sides etc. as time went by. They somehow managed to replace them.
Any chance you will going to set up the thing you did at the retro museum once? Good to see you back man!
Welcome back, Elliot!! Glad to see you back on this channel!! 😀
It was about time mate , got me all hooked up on refurbishing gbas
Great video and welcome back!
You must keep the ground wire longer, if the wire is pulled out of the plug, the ground wire still stays in the plug, please please change it
Good to have you back in the flow Elliott!
I know for sure it does exist a floor unit without the top part… here in Italy was primarily used in gaming fairs.
I played on one of these from back in the day, I can say that the base for the 3DS is magnetic, and combined with the bracket to put on the console itself, it stays in place, but you can also detach it from the main unit.
Games that ran on these kiosk units were stripped down versions with a software lock on the home button, and also text like: “Evita di tirare con forza il cavo che collega la console Nintendo 3DS allo stand”, which means “Avoid pulling hard on the cable connecting the Nintendo 3DS console to the stand”.
welcome back! what a banger video to come back to haha.
2:50 Japanese Auctions do be like that sometimes... I managed to get two of the latest NVIDIA Shield Portable Prototypes from a pile of untested electronics despite the fact that the Shield Portable was never released in Japan or allowed for import (due to strict Radio Act laws). I set one of them up and it was painful to get it working but it's an excellent device! Runs the android TV OS rather than the regular one so there are some features missing that the original device would have had (touchscreen, camera, etc). It's great for streaming PC games though!
As someone who specifically grew up with the Nintendo 3DS LL Aqua Blue Model, this really hits. Still have him too, 9 years on and its still kickin
Missed you bro hope you settled in to the new gaff well
Very cool video, this model 3DS kiosk is one I don't own yet and have been looking for for a while. I've seen pictures online of this model with either the braided cable or the metal wrapped cable, though I'm not sure how the connection works for the braided one since I'd never seen detail pictures of it before.
Considering your kiosk only has one lock, I'm not assuming the lock in it is still original, but if it works it works!
Also about the photo on the SD card of the 2DS kiosk console in the bracket, that picture is actually of a big 3DS kiosk like the one you showed at the end of the video, the one you showed actually also has the 2DS bracket on the left side of it! Very nice.
As for the base, I have typically seen these with a bigger metal plate on the bottom, but they were usually mounded to a counter, which is why it might look like it's unsteady like this.
My 3DS kiosk consoles also mostly came with pictures from the stores they were used in, it's a lot of fun being able to see its history like that, and because the 3DS sorts pictures by year, you can even pinpoint when it was in use!
Good way to make your return! Very cool.
On your way to 5K!
Welcome back man, I'm glad you finally got your glorified 3DS charging station!
Great first video back!
Fantastic you used the same setup and background and stuff. Its becomming a trademark haha 👍 i enjoy and looking forward to see more of your videos ! Great content!
So the GameBoy boy has entered the chat, again.
Good to see you around Elliot.
Most powered actors are actually compatible with the more popular country standards, one easy one if it's a 12 volt power supply and says 120 to 240 it means that you can just plug it in anywhere in America and Europe and everywhere else that shares their standards
Great video! I thought the kiosk looked familiar and I was right I saw the picture of it that you posted in the Facebook group.
