In the US the Quill stylus was a Club Nintendo reward that you could get for free when you registered your copy of Phantom Hourglass. It didn't come in the rupee case though, just a small nondescript box. I got both that and the rainbow set back in the day!
The bendy stylus would have been really great for people with motor issues like dysgraphia. Some people have more success with fingertip pens than traditional ones. The stylus is very thin and would be really hard to hold.
Though using the key ring looks a bit annoying, I know a LOT of kids (including me) had an affinity for losing their stylus completely, so I think it’s more to travel with than to use while playing
Yeah, I lost my DSi stylus pretty quickly too. But I still somehow have all 8 styluses of a rainbowish pack I once got. A miracle that I never lost any of them lol.
They actually had the same quill stylus as a Nintendo reward thing for Phantom Hourglass too. I remember ordering it and being so excited when it arrived! It was pretty cool and then I lost it like kids do. Glad to see it was also available in some other way.
You can actually cover that rubbery paint with clear matte laquer which will stabilise the surface and stop the stickyness. Had to do this to my MK4 Golf interior.
Jealous as hell. I think expecting more from it than being a cute charging dock is the wrong way to look at it. It's a neat place to store your dsi and make sure it's fully charged when you need it and it looks adorable.
I loved the Comfort Stylus back in the day,it was super handy for games that had you go back and forth between using the touch screen and buttons. The rubber on the case that came with it definitely degraded horribly over time. It was fine when the product was new,but it's clear that it wasn't made to last. It actually doesn't take much effort to clean off the excess rubber though, and without that grossness it is still a nice case.
The Rumble Pak is a very strange accessory, especially since there were only a few games that actually supported it. One of the strangest examples of a game that didn't is Mario and Lugi Bowser's Inside Story. It's unusual because the game before it, Partners in Time, fully supported the accessory. However, upon releasing the DSi, Nintendo basically forgot about the rumble Pak.
Yeah, partners in time is basically the one game I remember that used it and I had about 50 DS games on an R4 card. Another one was diddy kong racing, which was like mario kart but objectively worse.
@@Luke-cp9cb Because it would have 'made the DSi too big' (by a couple of millimetres). Then a year later they released the DSi XL (which still didn't have a bottom port)...
The DK large stylus was a huge thing in the US when I was growing up; I had a Pikachu-themed giant stylus! It wasn't curved, it was straight, but it was much easier to hold due to its size. I used it for AGES until the Pikachu came off & the balance was thrown off.
Don't throw that DS-style game case. Just put it into the box and keep it as collectors item - it's certainly interesting.. :) And you don't have to use it, it can stay in the box.
I had the bendable comfort stylus and loved it. It was nice not having to pick it up and put it down repeatedly for games that don't need it all the time.
Regarding the Rumble Pak, that vibrator is called a Linear Resonance Actuation motor, they're pretty common for slim applications, such as phones, as you mentioned. The joy-cons also use LRAs as far as I know they just have that black magic hd rumble thing.
The key ring seems like a good idea, if only it was designed to make stylus more ergonomic for drawing, I really like the art academy games for 3ds and would definitely buy something like a pencil feel stylus
I wonder if that quill stylus and banana stylus would be more comfortable for left-handed people. We tend to hold the writing utensils more upright, so the curve probably wouldn't affect us so much. Though... Personally I can't imagine the curve being exactly ideal at all for either hand.
With those styrofoam Club Nintendo DS card holders you can carefully cut off the top right corner of the styrofoam from each of the card holes to make them compatible with 3DS games too. :)
I remember seeing that bendy stylus back in the day, but I never felt a desire to have one. Not only was it weird-looking, it felt like it'd be impossible to keep with you in your pocket.
I'm not sure if anyone I know has this, but in one of those DS accessory packs I got a white claw looking stylus included with it. Its kind of hard to wear now as an adult, but its definitely one of my more unique items in my collection!
I used to go to the massive Asian mall in my city that was full of DS accessories, both bootleg and imported. I remember getting a gatcha piplup stylus and a pink case for ds for too much money, and I definitely saw those zelda accessories as well as that curvy one
I was lucky enough to get a Comfort Stylus directly from the company for free/a couple dollars shipping when they first launched. I think they did a promo on the Nintendo forums or something. It was amazing for Metroid Prime Hunters and other shooters where the stylus served as an aiming stick. Wrap that thing around your thumb and you have a very useable surrogate thumbstick. It was so good I bought the set you unboxed to get an extra one and you're right, the game case was amazing back in the day.
A few games can use the Rumble Pak. Mine came with Metroid Pinball. I often used it for multiplayer 42 All Time Classics; it would vibrate to alert you on your turn, which was handy if I got distracted by something shiny... Oooh, shiny... Where was I? ... Oh yes. Compatible games had the same logo (like coils either side of a DS), as you'd discovered, marked on the back of the game cases. I wonder if the wrap around stylus would be handy on the left thumb for games like Metroid Prime Hunters and the catchily named Super Mario 64 DS. As a right handed person I find the left hand stylus controls to be awkward, especially with the action buttons on the right. Do the Japanese hold pens and quills differently from the western cultures? Maybe the curved design has a benefit to them? I know they are very specific how they write their hirigana/katakana/kanji characters (Japanese letters). Just a thought.
I really want to know how the comfort stylus holds up against the pokemon ranger games (particularly the first one), i imagine it's one of several games that tended to result in a scratched screen after playing it due to the nature of what it required. I can't imagine something like that actually keeping it's form in the hands of a young person using the stylus so intensely lol.
Isn't Ranger that pokegame that JaidenAnimations made a video on, the one where you lariat Pokemon with friendship laser lassos instead of making them cockfight?
I had The finger stylus as a kid and it was really good for the two zelda games that were completely controlled with the touch screen. Holding the regular stylus for those games really tires out your grip and just having it on your finger really helped for longer play sessions.

I used to use something similar to that bendable finger stylus with my DS. You can get these small styluses that strap to your fingertip. The stylus part was only very small and I don't think they were official, but I found myself using them a lot. Also, the case could probably be coated in something or just kept as a collector's item. I have that bendy stylus case combo, I got it from gamestop back in the day. I cant quite remember where it is but I remember seeing it a few years ago and the rubbery part was fine still. Of course theres a lot of factors at play for how this stuff ages, like mine was inside my little ds backpack so it was out of the sun. It's also the white one so it could be a different rubber compound than the black, who knows for sure
The quill stylus was a Club Nintendo reward! I missed out on that one, but I went back and bought it for my playthrough on stream! I also owned that flexible stylus! Mine came with a came card case!
I used the hell out of that bendy stylus playing Metroid. I would bend it around my thumb to play and it made the game really fun to play. A great accessory to have that worked surprisingly well. I would get unlicensed ones from ebay by the pack because I lost mine a couple of times or the bendyness would give out. Great video.
I love the DS’s design, I wish they maximized on the potential of the layout though. Remember that console that Johnny Test owned that looked like the DS? Something like that but more condensed.
If you have issues with rubber turning sticky, wiping it down with some isopropyl alcohol can help get rid of the sticky-ness. I've used it quite a bit with old electronics and such that get all gooey. Helps a lot.
On the topic of the donkey Kong stylus - they also had similar ones that had Yoshi on top (with a sort of straight stlyus and a rounded end) and Mario in one of his karts from Mario Kart DS on top (that tapers inwards to the tip)! I still have my Yoshi one, it's still in pretty good condition, hard to carry around though
I have Metroid Pinball with the rumble pack. They were sold as a set in the US. Theoretically if you ran the ROM for that game through an SD card it would recognize and use the rumble feature.
I have that Club Nintendo stylus set. I'm not sure why I decided to get it; I probably had some points getting ready to expire and that was the only thing to spend it on. The styluses are a lot nicer than the factory ones, at least, and it was nice being able to customize it a little. I was definitely tempted by the quill stylus but having no way to actually store it in the console itself made it seem pointless to me, and I hadn't even considered how hard it'd be to hold. I think I got one for free with Phantom Hourglass but I never actually used it and I have no idea where it even is (if I indeed even got it).
I had the comfort stylus, they were sold in the US during the 3DS era as well I believe. Was absolutely necessary to not kill my hand playing Kid Icarus lol.
I remember when those character styluses came out! My Grandpa bought me one for my birthday one year. If my memory serves me correctly in addition to the DK one there was also a yoshi one and a Mario one as well and I’m sure a few others
The only good alternative stylus input method for games is the thumb numb that was bundled with the US release of the DS as part of the lanyard strap. Those things are not only rare, but worth a decent price. Unfortunately, nobody knew what they were for or why they were there. But they made FPS aiming input almost flawless using the touchscreen like a joystick.
I think they were recommended for the mario 64 remake. It showed in the instructions that it was one recommended way to control mario. I lost mine or didn't have one and had to make my own.
EZ-Flash made a flash cartridge in the same form factor as the DS Lite rumble pack. It has the rumble, ram expansion (for the web browser), and real time clock in it as well. You can load games on to it straight from a slot-1 flash card (like the r4) right on the DS with homebrew called GBA Exploader.
Please, Elliot, tell me you did not just go and chuck that flexible stylus and game case in the bin right after you recorded this video? I mean, I understand that the weird degrading rubber coating is a pain to get off, but once it's off, everything is good. Besides, the whole case has a lovely, sleek look to it. Obviously, you did buy it and you can do what you like with it, but it seems a terrible waste just to chuck it in the bin just because of the coating, even if it was cheap from Sendico.
Hey, I found this video by a push notification on my phone as suggested. Never heard of you but I'm your newest subscriber. The RUclips gods blessed me today. Looking forward to watching you in the new year!
Metroid Prime Pinball (9:48) is a game that works with the DS Rumble Pak and is actually a very good game. (that more people should play if they like pinball) Really gets the pinball feel and the video pinball feel right and is probably my fave DS game apart from the Game and Watch collection.
To get rid of that rubber coating, soak in warm water with baking soda and start scrubbing. Gets rid of that awful coating very easily and it's better than using rubbing alcohol/acetone.
Where I lived the comfortstylus was common and we called it a worm stylus. I thought they were made by the same company who did worm lights because the SP destroyed their business. Just snip the light and the connector off of a worm light and glue a nib onto it, and you've got yourself a nintendo accessory for the new age. Thanks for digging that ancient memory out of my head.
4:57 Yes. You wear it on one finger so you can switch from controller grip to touch without having to pull out the stylus. It's actually not too bad to use for gameplay, imagine using your knuckle to tap rather than your finger tip.
There was something called a Wave Scanner for Ryuusei No Rockman (Megaman Starforce) That was of course Japanese exclusive. It plugged into the DS via the Gameboy port but the main connection was a little cord that plugged into that little plug at the bottom. It allowed you to scan barcoded cards and it had an LCD screen on it. It alone could be played by itself but the main functionality was to give you battle cards in the actual DS game much like the BattleChip Gates for the gameboy. I own one but it doesn't work that well unfortunately which is probably why it never got localizations.
probably a bit late for this but i have been able to successfully recover products from rubber reversion by wiping all of it with acetone wipes. you can just pour some nail polish remover on a disposable textile wipe and do this instead, but do make sure to discard wipes often and only use them in a certain area so as to not spread the dissolved rubber onto more of the surface. after you're done, and if the plastic behind the rubber is any solid, you can polish it with some mineral oil to remove streaks and make it presentable again.
The DS holder would be great to use with games that heavily utilize stylus controls. Games like Phantom Hourglass, Kid Icarus Uprising (if it also fits the 3DS), and other such games.
@The Retro Future @11:23 vintage Pete’s overtime get that sticky stuff you can get out by scrubbing really hard with dryer sheets it may take up to three of them to get it all but if you work hard and scrub hard you can get that sticky stuff off. Rubber
that tiny Nintendo DS made me scream I love it so much also, I have the original DS rumble pack, it came with my copy of Actionloop, which made extensive use of it. Clubhouse Games also made it vibrate when it was your turn to play
i still have my comfort stylus. didn't come with a case though. didn't use it much cuz no matter how loose it was, after a while it'd make the tip of my finger go cold.
The rubber gone off you can fix it quite easily! I don't remember the procedure, but really, it's like taking a cotton swab and using some acetone or something. You get smooth plastic and get rid of the sticky stuff quite easily. You can use that to fix the case!
I've used WD-40 and a paper towel, or a terry cloth for really bad cases of rubber schmoo. Cleaned an older logitech mouse that way recently. I've found PS3 thumbsticks get it the worst.
I absolutely had that god-awful rubbery cartridge case as a kid. Even before the rubber started to go it was never very good; the carts would just fall out of their slots.
Oh, I used to have the Pikachu DSi charger - I got mine from a local import shop at the time that's no longer in business (Was also a European or American release as it just had generic Pokémon branding and wasn't tying into the Best Wishes anime). I gave it to my nephew, I dunno if he still has it himself anymore.
The key ring/stylus holder looks like it's meant to allow the user to switch between using the stylus and playing with the ABXY buttons and R trigger without awkwardly holding the stylus between your thumb and the DS. Probably wouldn't be very comfortable, though, seeing how thick it is.
when you said that the panda development kit video did poorly I was really confused, I didn't even know you made a video on it. I'm 95% sure it just didn't go in my subscription box.
I like watching your videos and the things that you cover... > I feel like the "Quill Stylus" is a reference to Link in Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks; Where he uses a quill to make marks on the maps and whatnot... 6:25 - 6:27 ---> Does that make it a butt plug?
The bendable finger stylus isn't actually something Nintendo came up with. I bought 3 for the DS back in the day from a company I've forgotten the name of, which claimed they invented it and it was some new revolutionary stylus. Well, it wasn't all that special, but I also quite liked it. I used it to play Elite Beat Agents/Ouendan and it was really good for that as well as other touch-heavy games. I think it was $26 for 3 of them so they weren't exactly cheap, but had a definite convenience and usability advantage over a stylus that over time slips in your hand when you are playing fast paced games like EBA.
Ahh, that green rupee stylus was originally a special Club Nintendo item you could get in exchange for filling out a very in-depth survey for the previous game Phantom Hourglass. Said game's stats at release weren't satisfactory for them, so they begun market research; the special feather stylus was the bait they offered to get data for that research. It's interesting to see that they had enough overstock to sell them; at the time I had filled out my survey they made it out to be a super limited run item, but as I expected, that was simply an incentive to get data ASAP. Oh well. Anyway, the packaging the original came in was much less impressive, it was a fitted foam insert like yours, but within a sleeved cardboard box decorated with Phantom Hourglass illustrations and an overworld map pattern. Bummer that the original issued items didn't have that awesome rupee case, it would make it much nicer to display.
It seems to be more about aesthetics rather than ergonomic design. The Zelda quill is meant to mimic a real quill aesthetically. However realistically, a real quill is longer and more hefty so its weight still rests in between your thumb and index. The curve in the Donkey Kong Stylus is also more for aesthetics to mimic curvature of bananas. They seem to place ergonomics a distant second well under aesthetics.
oh, is that quill is the Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks Quill Stylus with a green rube case, nice find. Nintendo DS Collector's Edition Donkey Kong Character Banana Stylus, that rubber you can get remade in 3D to fit that case

I would get unlicensed ones from ebay by the pack because I lost mine a couple of times or the bendyness would give out. Great video.
I really enjoy these videos with odd accessories, I think thats what I liked about this channel in the first place.
I love the DS’s design, I wish they maximized on the potential of the layout though. Remember that console that Johnny Test owned that looked like the DS? Something like that but more condensed.
I remember having the club Nintendo stylus set. They all got lost in the couch cushions and were never to be seen again.
If you have issues with rubber turning sticky, wiping it down with some isopropyl alcohol can help get rid of the sticky-ness. I've used it quite a bit with old electronics and such that get all gooey. Helps a lot.
Windex also works
@@xex-jdmodz it does! I'd assume because I'm fairly certain it has IPA in it. I think.
The tiny little OGDS at 3:50 would be an amazing dangly earring
I can really imagine the bendable stylus being quite convenient for playing a game that is built upon the touchscreen like phantom hourglass.
7:40 It's nice how even the lanyard has the banana shape.
That case is easy to clean with IPA. I have the same case and that rubber paint came off easily.
Maybe the stylus are harder to use bc of bigger hands? Like maybe they’re just designed for way smaller ones. At least for the quill one!
What interesting accessories! I like them! Too bad my DS Lite broke years ago and I have not been able to get a replacement. What a shame :(
Hey, I found this video by a push notification on my phone as suggested. Never heard of you but I'm your newest subscriber. The RUclips gods blessed me today. Looking forward to watching you in the new year!
2:53 I came for Odd and Strange... And Staright away I see one I would have BOUGHT! I love that Quill Styled Stylus!!!
I used to have a stylus that was shaped like a black claw that you put on your finger tip. It was uncomfortable to use but looked cool asf
Metroid Prime Pinball (9:48) is a game that works with the DS Rumble Pak and is actually a very good game. (that more people should play if they like pinball)
Really gets the pinball feel and the video pinball feel right and is probably my fave DS game apart from the Game and Watch collection.
4:57
Yes. You wear it on one finger so you can switch from controller grip to touch without having to pull out the stylus. It's actually not too bad to use for gameplay, imagine using your knuckle to tap rather than your finger tip.
I love that the British guy said you put a Dollar in the Gachapon machine in Japan.
Thank you so much for these videos! They make me happy. :)
6:52 He's finally here and performing for you.
By far my favorite series Elliot! I love accessories
probably a bit late for this but i have been able to successfully recover products from rubber reversion by wiping all of it with acetone wipes. you can just pour some nail polish remover on a disposable textile wipe and do this instead, but do make sure to discard wipes often and only use them in a certain area so as to not spread the dissolved rubber onto more of the surface.
after you're done, and if the plastic behind the rubber is any solid, you can polish it with some mineral oil to remove streaks and make it presentable again.
That’s it, I’m finally going to start looking into sendico.
Absolutely love finding odd accessories!
If you're going to throw that game case away, try a light coating of starch to make that rubber non stick.
The DS holder would be great to use with games that heavily utilize stylus controls. Games like Phantom Hourglass, Kid Icarus Uprising (if it also fits the 3DS), and other such games.
Great video as always, I hope you can track down the Pac-Pix stylus some day. I have a sealed one and it is so cool!
Eliot:an enormous Pikachu with a charging plug on its a$$.
Me:since when do you say this?!?!?!? 😂😂😂
@The Retro Future @11:23 vintage Pete’s overtime get that sticky stuff you can get out by scrubbing really hard with dryer sheets it may take up to three of them to get it all but if you work hard and scrub hard you can get that sticky stuff off. Rubber
that tiny Nintendo DS made me scream I love it so much
also, I have the original DS rumble pack, it came with my copy of Actionloop, which made extensive use of it. Clubhouse Games also made it vibrate when it was your turn to play
5:20 thing there is for people who have trouble holding pens and pencils the normal way and it helps them so yeah
you have inspired me to take on a brand new hobby, you are my favourite youtuber! keep up the hard work, i know it’s not easy but you’re doing great!
Loved the rumble pack with Metroid Prime Hunters on DS
i still have my comfort stylus. didn't come with a case though. didn't use it much cuz no matter how loose it was, after a while it'd make the tip of my finger go cold.
0:01 Him: *Writing hello in cursive on pictochat on DS lite
Him one millisecond later: I LiKe It 😳😳😃😃😈
The rubber gone off you can fix it quite easily!
The Zelda Stylus for when you’ve got to game but also butter your toast!
Whenever I hear Banpresto, I can't help but be reminded of the games they published (developed?) and how interesting they could be
What’s the name of the stylus cover with the little ds charm? It look really comfortable and I’d like to have one
I got that DSI holder passed down to me, I love it, just sort of sits on my shelf
when you said that the panda development kit video did poorly I was really confused, I didn't even know you made a video on it. I'm 95% sure it just didn't go in my subscription box.
I had the bendable stylus as a kid and used it on occasion when I lost my regular ones
You're pretty handy, I figure that sticky cartridge case could have been gutted and re-purposed. Also, I like the lenticular instructive photo.
I like watching your videos and the things that you cover...
> I feel like the "Quill Stylus" is a reference to Link in Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks; Where he uses a quill to make marks on the maps and whatnot...
6:25 - 6:27 ---> Does that make it a butt plug?
If you really wanted to hold on to the case with the sticky rubber could you keep the metal outside and make a silicone mould of the the inside?
3:05 man as a left handed person that kind of stylus holder would make playing games so much easier its so uncomfortable holding the stylus while using the joycon
